March 30th 2008 River Report for G.R.Colford & Sons Limited on the Main SW Miramichi River. Very little change in the past few days with the river ice out conditions for the Miramichi. With some rain in the forecast for Tuesday and some warmer temperatures with more rain in the next couple of weeks we should be getting some changes in the ice out conditions on the Miramichi river. As for it being out by the 15th of April? Its just to soon to say. I have some that have been saying the ice will be out by the 15th April and some saying the 30th! I am cheering for the 15th!! March 21, 2008 River Report for G.R.Colford & Sons Limited on the Main South West Miramichi River. Most of us are getting very anxious to see the ice start breaking up. But for the moment on the Miramichi we are hit with yet another late winter storm. With already about 5 feet in most places here on the Miramichi, we are waiting for the first signs of spring with some warm weather or rain to start and get our rivers rising and get the ice moving. Some of the shores are letting go in some places from the warm sun in the late afternoons. But with the temperatures we are having like today with the wind chill is down to -11 in the Blackville area and blowing snow. Winds are 19km/h and gust at 31 km/h makes a cold day. Looks like a very late ice out for the spring of 2008. They are calling for cold weather for the next week or so.The long range forecast looks to be a warm start to April. My prediction is sometime the week of the 20th for ice out. Maybe we will get lucky and get the Cains River out for the first week or so? There was a ton of fish that went up the Cains last fall. The lower sections of the Cains are almost as good as the Miramichi in the first week. Looks like a spring we may need a shovel in the boat for the snow storms!! Or tell lots of stories over a game of crib while getting warm on coffee breaks at the camp. Until next time, Tight Lines and lets hope for some warmer weather on the Miramichi. Monday 13th August 2007 Miramichi River report from G.R.Colford & Sons Sporting Camps Atlantic salmon fly fishing on the famous Miramichi River in New Brunswick, Canada. With all the warm weather over the past 3 weeks the fishing is still very hard! Very few fish were reported being hooked over the weekend on all parts of the river. The water temperature is not so bad in the mornings at 68F but it gets up there in the afternoon to 75F or higher in some parts of the river. With cooler days and nights coming this week in the forecast, it may improve the fishing and keep the temperatures down and then we may see an increase in some fish coming in. There are lots of fish holding in the Brooks and at the mouth of the smaller tributaries. Cumulative counts to date of salmon as of July 31, 2007 at the Southwest Millerton Trapnet are Salmon 301. And for grilse is 865 as of July 31, 2007. The percentage is that they trap between 8 to 10% as they are moving up stream. This is down from last year but still are not bad numbers to date with all the warm weather that we have had so far. Flies of choice the last couple of days were brown bombers with orange hackle and green machines. Bye for now, Rodney Colford G.R. COLFORD & SONS Sports Guiding Since 1929 Friday August 10th 2007 Miramichi River report from G.R.Colford & Sons Sporting Camps Atlantic salmon fly fishing on the famous Miramichi River in New Brunswick. The Main South West Miramichi the last couple of days got a nice raise of water, And cooled it down to the 62 to 69 degree mark. Many fish seen moving were very silver in color. And a lot of them were very good size salmon. I talked to a few anglers from Blackville to Doaktown and they are all seeing and hooking a few fish. And a lot of grilse are being hooked aswell. I have not heard of any fish being hooked with sea lice on them. Flies of choice were brown bombers- brown hackle, White bomber- orange hackle, Christmas tree bomber- with yellow & orange hackle, all with white tails. and your green machines with white tails, and green machines with red butt. And all single hooks #8's & #6's. Bye for now, Rodney Colford G.R. COLFORD & SONS Sports Guiding Since 1929 Thursday August 9th 2007 Miramichi River report from G.R.Colford & Sons Sporting Camps Atlantic salmon fly fishing on the famous Miramichi River in New Brunswick. On the lower stretches of the SW Miramichi the water temperature got back down into the 60's and got the fish into the taking mood. With over 25 fish being hooked in the short time and a triple header on at one time, but only 2 of us landed out of 3 fish. My daughter Laura age 7 hooked her 1st Salmon ever on a bomber. Zachery also got his 1st of the season along with 2 more, all on bombers. Rob Strange hooked 5 all on green machines red butt. I hooked 3 all on bombers as well. Anglers at black brook by the mouth of Cains River got into several fish but mostly all on wet flies. We seen several fish very silver looking jumping in the pool some of the 30lb range. With the water still raising a little last night at dark, up about 2 inches. Should get the morning of to a very good start. I will be back with todays report later this evening. As for the fishing this is great news for the fish and the Angler for August. We really needed a good change in the weather to pick things up. Bye for now, Rodney Colford G.R. COLFORD & SONS Sports Guiding Since 1929 August 7th 2007 Miramichi River report from G.R.Colford & Sons Sporting Camps Atlantic salmon fly fishing on the famous Miramichi River in New Brunswick. On the lower stretches of the SW Miramichi we seen a little better fishing the past couple days. With the water temperatures getting down to 65 degrees in some parts of the river. Late evenings it got up to 75 degrees. In the Area from the Mouth of Cains river down there has been reports of fresh fish being hooked with sea lice on them and very silver in color. Also reports in the Doaktown area of fish being hooked. A lot of the fish are being hooked on small black wet flies and white tailed green machines. And your bombers orange and brown with a dead drift affect. I have no reports on the upper stretches today above Doaktown. I would think everybody has already heard about the weather forecast but just in case you haven't here is what the weather is over the next few days, hope you like rain! because there is going to be a lot of it. There is expected 30 to 40 ml of rain over the next day or so for the Miramichi area. And for us anglers it is like going to the beach on a sunny day. Well we really need a change for the fish and lets hope we do get some rain this time. I hooked a couple the last few days on green machines #8 singles. Guide Ian Fortune hooked fish almost every morning the last few days on brown bombers with white ends #4. Local anglers at the mouth of Cains River hooked some on green machines #8 singles. Well maybe we will have some better fishing over the next few days. Bye for now, Rodney Colford G.R. COLFORD & SONS Sports Guiding Since 1929 Sunday August 5th 2007 For G.R.Colford & Sons Limited on the Main South West Miramichi and tributaries. Well we got a little raise in the water on the lower stretches of the Miramichi. And the temperature dropped down a bit to get a few fish taking. The temp was 70F for the most of the day, and I expect it to drop down into the mid 60's over night. I hooked a nice salmon on a white tail green machine tonight, and rolled a couple more. There were 4 salmon landed across from me aswell and all hooked on a green machine. They did not want to look at the dry fly. Several fish were all through the pool today and some seen moving through the upper stretches. I also managed to get a chance to fish the Cains river for awhile today at Moore's Pool but seen nothing there. Tight Lines, Rodney Colford August 4th 2007 Fishing on the SW Miramichi is still very slow. The water temperature is 73.8 F. And very few fish are taking. And very few people are fishing in this heat. They put 14 fish through the trap today in Millerton 8 Salmon & 6 Grilse and that is from 8 to 10% that are moving through. This is supposed to be the end of this heat wave and we are going to be getting some cooler weather this week. All the heavy thunder storms did help we are now starting to get a raise of water. With some cooler weather coming and the fish still trying to come in when the water is this warm, I think it's going to be a very good August run starting this week. There are still very little fish showing in the pools this morning. Only fish we were seeing is the ones that are smart enough to hold in the cool streams and brooks. But tonight we seen them starting to leave the brooks and jump and roll in the pools so just maybe they know there is a change in the air! Until next time. Bye for now, Rodney Colford |

June 6th 2007 G.R.Colford & Sons Limited On the of the Main South West Miramichi today the river was rising and made it very difficult to catch anything this morning. The water temperture was 59F and still clear even tho it was rising fast. Guide Gary Colford and Sport Jim Haughey hooked a couple brook trout. And they also hooked a Shad for a few seconds. There were very few Shad showing tonight but there was alot of small trout feeding. Joel Kitchen hooked a few brook trout and one was a 3 or 4 pounder that got away while trying to get it without a net. Ronnie Steeves landed his first Shad last night and also had several others hooked up, He said it took him out into his backing and was amazed how strong they were. And there was lots playing around and some almost hitting the boat. Up river around the Doaktown area there were some trout being caught around the 14 to 16 inch range. Still very little sign of any big trout being caught so just maybe we are not into our big Sea Trout run yet. Still very little sign of any fresh Salmon being caught, but some have been put through the traps at the head of the river. So there are some fish moving about. I will try and post the river report tomorrow for you and hope to have better results. Rodney Colford |

June 3rd/2007 On the South West Miramichi River today the water was 62F and very clear and with over cast sky's. I started the day at 5:10am fishing at the mouth of Cains River with the moon still in the sky, And got 4 nice brookies around 12 to 14 inches. There was still lots of trout around that I could see rolling about. I also fished a couple other pools downstream and had no luck the rest of the morning. Around 4pm we headed to Edmonds Pool near Doaktown and fished there for a couple hours and got a couple brookies 12 inches. We then decided to go Shad fishing the rest of the evening at the Shad hole near Blackville. We just got there and a lady had one to the net. So we set up above them and it was not long before Paul Michaels got into his 1st ever Shad. It was a nice one about 5lbs. We managed to land 3 Shad and we must of had 10 more takes, and this was just in the last couple of hours. Robert Arbeau also had 3 or more in the boat. And there was other boats as well getting them near by. Don Roy had several Brook Trout this afternoon all around the 12 to 14inch range. There was several canoers sailing the river today and injoying the days fishing. Tomorrow should be better for the Shad with alot more sign today of them rolling about. There has been reports of Silver Atlantic's moving through but I have not got my hook into one yet, and I will let you no when I do! Bye for now, Rodney Colford |

June 1nd 2007 On the South West Miramichi the last couple of days I saw several brook trout being caught. My cousins Johnathan and Kenny caught some brook trout in the 2 to 4lb range, they were hooked on a whiskers with a green butt. I netted one for Jason Curtis around 2lb, he hooked it on a Black Ghost Streamer. I had several takes but nothing hooked up, I also seen several fish rolling about. Good friend Robert Arbeau hooked 4 Shad yesterday (Friday) and could not get 1 to hold on to land. There a few more Shad rolling about but should be more around in a week or less. Should be great trout fishing for you guys wanting to sail the Cains River this weekend. All the trout we seen hooked the last couple days have been at the mouth of Cains River or below. I am going to give it a try in the Doaktown area on Saturday and Sunday and see what we can hook into. I seen some nice Trout rolling and Shad near Doaktown Friday. The water is still holding around 60 degrees, and very good for this river. I have not heard any reports about the North West Miramichi over the last few days, Soon as I do I will let you no. Flies of choice small Dry flies, bombers, whiskers, muddlers, Wet flies, Streamers, maribou patterns, Nymph Flies, Stoneflies, Woolly Buggers. Have fun and let me no how you do. Rodney Colford |

May 30th/ 2007 Well guys fishing is improving day by day. With the water temp today and yesterday around 60 degrees and over cast skies, a fisherman's paradise. Wensday there were a few reports of bright Silvers being caught by the local fisherman. But I have yet to get one on my fly! Amy Jardine landed a grilse last night and he said it was a beautiful fish. I fished in Blissfield yesterday evening and got a few trout but nothing of any size.Today I seen 2 Salmon jump below the mouth of the Cains River. And just after that Paul Michaels got into some nice brook trout from 1/2lb to 1lb range on a 4WT rod they were fun. And just above the Cains Robert Arbeau lost a huge Salmon that took his line way out into the backing. He also got a nice 2lb brook trout and a couple of Shad. There are starting to be lots of Shad around and they are very fun to catch, but hard to set the hook on! So give it a try if you get a chance. I will try and report back tomorrow night unless the fish tire me out. Cheers, Rodney Colford |

May 27/2007 On the South West Miramichi today on the lower section the water temp was 61F With very little wind and the sun setting nice in the sky this evening. We got into some nice Trout around 10 to 14 inch range. There was a couple more anglers near by getting a few Trout aswell. We also seen some Shad moving around but decided not go for them today. On the North West miramichi today was rumors of a 20lb Bright Salmon being landed just below the Minors Bridge. And also some good size Sea Trout from 2 to 5 pound range. On the Bartholomew River over the weekend some anglers canoeing got into some nice Trout from 10 to 14 inch range. And seen lots of sign of brook trout in the river while sailing. On the Cains River over the weekend anglers canoeing also got into some nice trout around the 10 to 14 inch size. Next weekend may be the weekend to sail the Cains and get into the fresh run of sea trout if your felling lucky. The Main South West Miramichi river is still a little high for the lower stretches. But it is getting great for dry fly fishing when you see the trout taking the bugs of the top of the water even if it is a little high. Bye for now, Rodney Colford G.R.Colford & Sons |

Just when you thought they would'nt take we had a 37 incher take. Maybe this weather will bring our water up and get the up river ice coming down. All in all its been very good fishing on the lower parts of the Miramichi and the Cains River. With 200 fish being landed at Colfords Guiding for the first 3 days of the season. Fish count day 3 April 17th Ron and Guide Rodney Colford 6 fish in boat, 4 salmon, 2 grilse. 1 salmon was 37 inches long. Bill and Guide Gary Colford 6 fish, 4 salmon, 2 grilse. With fishing season soon aproaching on April 15th/2007 and the colder weather that we are having is keeping the river ice solid for the start of the season. There are a few places that you can wet a line in the smaller rivers like the Cains and Bartholomew river. The South West Miramichi has a few spots open but only a few! The North West Miramichi is still frozen solid with very heavy looking ice.We need some warmer weather or rain to raise the river to get the ice moving. |
