San Carlos Sport Fishing
Tarpon Fishing report October/November 2004

Giant Tarpon fishing 90lb/250lb in Rio San Juan ,Nicaragua & Costa Rica
“ Alone in Tarpon paradise “ said FIELD & STREAM MAGASINE…in it’s May 2004 edition http://www.marine-electronics.net/tropicalfishing/FAS.htm

It is true than we had good time and fun with Mr Bill heavey he even caught a 200lb on 12lb.. but it is really a greater Pleasure to report aneven better fishing in past months, Ireport our usual big tarpon 90lb ?200lb but also some giants around 250lb, one even much bigger reported by Mr Ronald J. Stites ...All these fish released so weight is only estimation…Fishing with Guest since 4 year the upper Rio San Juan, we caught thousands of tarpon we may be wrong but it will only be of 10? 15lb? diference no more http://nicaraguafishing.com/

Most readers will find strange than we catch& release so big tarpon in America, so far it was only possible on the coast of Africa …Explanation is than Rio San Juan / Nicaragua lake offer specific conditions… one of them is than we fish for Giant Tarpon and Snook in quiet fresh water at 120 miles from sea!!!… I report “ two category of tarpon” ( obviously both are Megalops Atlanticus .). the regular Silver king 60lb /150lb these are migrating fish, the same one than can be caught in all the caribean, Florida etc… ,, and Our “Special Nicaragua Lake “ 100/250lb +…whose colour is Dark on the back , Golden on the side… these are the one witch stay herein fresh water!!! in the immensity of Nicaragua lake . I have no idea of how many years they stay but they become udge. With same length these fish are much higher and weight some 30/40% more than the one caught for Example in Florida or Central America Caribean cost , there is a lot of food here in River and lake.. , water temperature is almost the same all year round, a lot of space to play.. no reason to go back to the struggle of sea…may be for reproduction but there also we have our theory..

With years of fishing, we learned where to go for the really big fish…and nowday in each trip guests have fish on… I accumulate many testimonies upon the size of Giant tarpon of Nicaragua lake. Obviously we catch and release but in May 2003 due to an accident we weighed one of these fish it was a 235lb, also Journallist of Major fishing Magazines came and fished with us some for as long as a week ( For Example FIELDS AND STREAM , also SPORTFISHING MAGASINE, and VOYAGES DE PECHE, and LA PESCA,…) Journalist in their articles confirm the quantity and size of TARPON in upper Rio San Juan… May be the most amasing is than there is no special time to come, it is the same any day all year round Note also than all our fishing is in quiet Fresh water .. no tuff sea, no Dangerous hard Barra to pass, No “seasick jigging”… we Troll or Cast ‘Bait casting/ Spinning and also fly fish , it can even be on what I call Extreme Light tackle for Giant tarpon…according to guest experience we go as light as 12lb. 10lb ? 8 lb..( We “made” all world record for tarpon in these line class and also the Children, Junior boys and Girl…)

I also report the presence of very big snook in the area , they can be caught all year round but the main season for them is from October till the end of January ..
Our other alternative fishing to relax from Giant tarpon is Fishing for Big Rainbowbass on conventional or fly tackles in close Solentiname archipelago, Fishing for these is good all year round as for Machacas mainly in Rio Frio …

I did not ”discover “ a new Tarpon Paradise …(as describe Field&Stream ) .I only can talk of a kind of reopening of a fantastic Tarpon Fishing destination… … In the seventies, the destination was world famous , there were 3 camps on the river… Civil war came in Nicaragua ..all stop… nowday ( since 15 years ) the country is quiet and slowly opening to tourism …

Still a very quiet country even if Real Estate in Nicaragua is booming …. since 3 years there is a lot of foreign investment from individual wishing a cool place to retire to major World known Tourism Company.

In our San Juan River more and more visitors are coming reason why I recently add some boats and also end the building of a nice GUEST HOUSE in order to provide Guest really nice accommodation . http://www.nicaraguafishing.com/accomodation.htm
Visitors enjoy what is one of the best Tarpon fishing in the world and also .the still virgin beauty of the country, the unspoiled Jungle.. Wild life , arts, History…
I also report ( October ) the presence of the first big snook ( over 25lb ) of the year , also a very good fishing for Rainbow bass/Lagunero/Wapote around 5/6 lb, we are now entering in the dry season this quality of fishing will remain till May next year …After fishing will also be great but with the presence of rain.

My company is growing and soon we will offer two additional fishing destination in Nicaragua.one on Caribean cost other one on Pacific cost .

S.C.S Giant Tarpon fishing and snook fishing Trips in Nicaragua and Costa Rica , as described in FIELD & STREAM magazine.
Long time since I post a fishing report.. this one cover what happened in our Jungle river since the beginning of the year. .We are a small company, a guest told me recently than to present my activity I should say: “ We are a small specialized operation that caters to custom Jungle River fishing trips for small groups of fishermen “ that’s what we do .
My fishing trip for Tarpon, snook, Rainbow bass are in San Juan River ( Rio san Juan ) this Historical tropical Jungle river, is the border between south Nicaragua and north Costa Rica....Spot is UNIQUE because we can go for Giant tarpon ( 90lb/250lb+ ) any day, any month all year round....this is the reason why more and more anglers and now some celebrities.. are coming and coming back to fish with us.. even if we cannot offer Florida style accommodations...

Good new is than from July we will offer much better lodging with the opening of my new comfortable Guests house in front The Jungle town of SAN CARLOS and ..also with the reopening of Hotel Mancaron in Solentiname and finally with a new place down San Juan River in Saballo./Castillo.

Since beginning of the year we have been very busy . We are even more busy lately as many guest wish to come after publication of an article concerning our operation in famous magazine FIELD AND STREAM , Author Mr. Bill heavey as been fishing with us and article been published in May Edition It says: Alone in Tarpon Paradise. There’s a river in Nicaragua filled with thousands of giant tarpon and very few fishermen. in other words , go now. Link to article is http://www.marine-electronics.net/tropicalfishing/FAS.htm

Rumors concerning quality of our fishing are expending ( It’s not everyday than a new fishing destination appears.. and we have more journalist from other Media , TV etc than are coming... more articles are going to be published soon ...I wish not to be misunderstood I am not singing victory , etc etc... I think that what is happening is the correct prize for years of hard work for me , my teams and local friends.. ... anyway with me or not all this is going to be positive for Rio San Juan as it will bring more Tourism in an area and to people who really need and deserve it , this is the most important and what will remain.. ... Well so far it is quiet and very very lay back... I have no idea for how long time..

Back to fishing: it as been great for all guest, I will only say than since beginning of the year everybody coming ( 88 guests in this 6 first month ) had Tarpon on , Common size of fish between 90lb and 200lb some monsters also around 250lb .. I know many readers and some ‘dear Confreres “ are going to be very very suspicious about what I wrote to day about because it is about an exceptional spot with the biggest Tarpon in the Americas.. but all this is 100% true, if still in doubt please ask Mr. Roy turner from Magazine FEDER PESCA SPAIN.http://www.destinosdepesca.com/ , to Mr. Bill Heavey FIELD AND STREAM magazine http://www.marine-electronics.net/tropicalfishing/FAS.htm or to Mr. George LARGE Vice president of RAPALA http://www.nicaraguafishing.com/rep49.htm they all have been fishing with us recently, and got some 200lb... .., I was looking at The IGFA world record book recently i have the 2003 edition and I like to report than NO OFFICIALLY we made several time some IGFA line class record , 8lb in 12lb Men and Women, and all the children IGFA All tackle record for tarpon Boy and girl ( my sons...and friends..). In these numbers I may be wrong from a few pounds because we FISH AND RELEASE, we do not want to kill tarpon.. also since 2 months we do not use gaff anymore.. ( Thanks to RAPALA. new lock’n weight.) . well we .estimate fairly the weight of fish by measurement .. NOTE Due to an accident once we weighed one of “ our “ tarpon it was a 235lb pounder ...

I have written many fishing reports in the past about our giant tarpon and the fact than we are almost alone on the river.. I had many comments full of doubts of suspicions.. , nowadays Known specialized Sport Fishing journalist came and are writing about us I wish to thanks all of them ...and , as say Bill Heavey in FIELD & STREAM “Alone in Tarpon Paradise” The civil war is over in Nicaragua. The tarpon, unfished for 30 years, are hungry. And no one knows....

Subject: Jaguar Bass on a fly ... a perfect match.

There was a population boom this year with the Jaguar bass or Guapote pinto. Maybe it was caused by last year's long dry season and the abundance of structure along the river banks and lagoons. We managed to get many 4 lb. fish using # 4 flyrods and Gurgler poppers, casting to structure and letting the popper lay still after a few pops. On every second cast there was a jaguar bass taken, with many managing to break off the 6 lb. tippet. Mojarras and small Rainbow Bass were also hooked using small Clouser streamers and bonefish flies. The best fishing was in Garza Lagoon and in the back lagoons, off Laguna Agua Dulce near Barra del Colorado. May is the month for the fast action, just before the rains that soon flood the country in June.
