Subject: Lake Arenal
The January winds and resulting rains have made fishing on Lake Arenal very difficult for flyfishing. There are some fish found by trolling heavy lures and for flyfishing... with the lead-core lines drifting large white/silver flies across the points off reefs. The use of fish/depth finders is absolutely essential. The fishing on the lake is not expected to improve till possibly February. |

Subject: Tarpon are arriving ... big time!
The tarpon are seen rolling and feeding in big schools at the entrance of the creeks. The filling lagoons are also encouraging masses of baitfish to gather and so create the best situation for the predator fish. Unfortunately the fishing is closed till the end of July, but when it does open ... a truly fantastic fishing experience is guaranteed for the fly fisher and light tackle angler. The presence of such large schools of fish at this time indicate a good healthy population of sportfish to be present for the next months. Please visit our Web Site at http://www.flyfishcostarica.com for more up-to-date opportunities for fishing this area and the rivers that feed into the Caņo Negro complex of lagoons and canals. The use of PAC pontoon craft make it possible to enter usually remote waters and are in harmony with the natural beauty of the National Park and Wildlife Reserve. Tarpon there are large and in sizes from 60 to 200 lbs. |

Subject: Arenal Lake for Rainbow Bass or Guapote
It rains heavily and sometimes the ash from the active volcano can be a big problem... but the water level is low and there are lots of fair sized rainbow bass to be hooked in the shallow inlets and along the banks. Sometimes with deep trolling lures, the bigger guapote are found at depths of about 40 ft. It is really one of the best times to fish this lake for the prize of our freshwater fishing ... the Rainbow Bass. Many Machacas are also found below the dead tree stumps in the lake edges and below trees. these are best using top water plugs or poppers, but the most success is searching for feeding activity and casting a small silver minnow spoon or fly. This is dynamite. We are experiencing a change in the season so expect rain squalls diring the day with doses of acid rain on the eastern end of the lake. Some large 8 lb. Largemouth bass are also being hooked along the shore of the western end of the lake. Something very new to us and a challenge to the local anglers.
Try this fishing if in the area ... contact Fly Fish Costa Rica for more information or phone 228 0267, we can always find you the best in tropical freshwater fishing.
