Subject: Rio Sarapiqui is now ideal.
The Sarapiqui R. water is very clear and lowering.... with lots of feeding Machaca below the overhanging trees. This is an all day fishery with the best top water action when the wind disturbs the trees and blows material down on the river. Small chartreuse poppers, grasshopper patterns and gurglers are best in sizes of 6 to 10. With the water level this ideal, the drift boat can get into a lot of normally difficult pools. It is also a wonderful drift trip with the PAC 1300 craft. There are also many bobo seen in the fast water, but these are difficult to hook with the clear water. If they are feeding, then a red/white # 6 streamer fly would work best. |

Subject: With lowering water levels ... the fish are in.
After the great floods experienced these past months, the lowering water levels of the rivers flowing into the Caribbean are now offering some very good fishing experiences. The Rio Sarapiqui is clear with lots of Machaca feeding actively below the overhanging trees. Bobo are seen in the fast water, but not yet taking flies... though some are being hooked using crank-baits on light tackle. In another few weeks, this will be a really exciting fishing water for the flyfisher.

Subject: Rio Sarapiqui Fishing
Not entirely "White Water" quality, but floating down the Rio Sarapiqui fishing for Machaca and Bobo was just ideal. The river was low and water very clear. Casting to the banks using poppers produced some very good Machacas and at the tail of the rapids, a few Bobo were hooked using red/white Jack Frost flies on # 8 Hi-D sinking lines. Bobo are very difficult to catch on flies and this is the ideal time to hook them since there are rains in the mountains in the afternoons and the evening mini-floods stimulate them into taking other food ... and flies become a possible successful lure. The Machaca are also feeding more on the surface, just below overhanging trees where they are awaiting falling insects and other jungle critters. Other fish hooked were Mojarras and Machin, using black numphs and streamers. |
