Subject: Rio Savegre better than ever ...
After the terrible storms experienced on the Caribbean coast last week, the high mountain streams excaped the major resulting floods. Though the water level was high, it ran reasonably clear and the trout were not very easily spooked. It then meant that the angler could easily approach the pools without much stealth and using weighted numphs, the fish catch numbers rose dramatically. The only problem experienced was the present number of small fish that raced to capture and fly presented. This meant that the bigger fish did not get a chance to be hooked and the best fishing strategy was to just keep fishing for the small 5 inch trout till the big ones managed to get the fly. These bigger 12 inch trout were in the deep, feeding on nymphs and scuds. In the late evening, it was possible to catch some bigger trout using dry flies ... mainly the elk hair caddis. But with the high water, there were very few areas with good calm water and placid surface to be able to present the dry fly properly. Average trout catch for the day was 60 with about a quarter of these being fish in the above 8 inch size. |

Subject: Rio Savegre
The water is just gin clear and cold. Ideal conditions exist for fishing rainbow trout with dry flies. There is also the added attraction of possibly spotting the Resplendent Quetzal among the surrounding trees. They are now more in this area feeding on small wild advocado pears. Dry flies are the ticket for fish numbers ... but the big ones are down deep and best using weighted hare ear's nymphs in sizes of #18. |

Subject: Trout ... here in the tropics? Yes... and many.
The fast flowing Rio Savegre is home to many feisty rainbow trout. Not large, but their 6 -10 inch size feels great using a #2 flyrod and dry flies. This is mainly wet wading, along a beautiful valley of cool forests and grass covered meadows. The clear water of the Rio Savegre make the trout very skittish and approaching the pools carefully is very important, along with not many false casts allowed and delicate presentations. Nymphs and dry flies on # 16 to # 20 hooks, using 7X tippets will add to the challenge and every pool offers a test to the angler. At present, the May bugs and ants are the main patterns used, especially later in the day or after a short rain. We averaged 30 trout per day, with many in the 12 inch sizes taken in the bigger pools. Most of the best fishing is in the early morning till about midday, when the rains begin and the fog rolls in. It is cool and rare angling experience in the tropics. |
