Fishing Reports for Rotorua Lakes and Rivers
The fishing has been very ordinary for the past month as we await the winter spawning runs to start.
Fish and Game are somewhat concerned with the very low counts through the fish trap at Te Wairoa (next to the Landing at Lake Tarawera) and the fishing around the Landing has been productive but only for those putting the hours in.
Rotoiti and Okataina have been more consistent for the ardent fly fisherman or change of light harling morning and evening.
The Whirinaki and Rangitaiki resident fish have moved upstream and the fresh runs from the lower lakes has not been evident although some build up in the mid reaches above Te Awa (Rangitaiki) would suggest there is some movement. The Nongotaha is full of spawning fish and a build up in the Waititi is making some easy fishing, but it is getting a hammering from all and sundry.
The Tongariro and Tauranga Taupo (TT) are also late with very few runs to date. Recent catch rates are down on last year so we await nature to bring them up so to speak. Hopefully they will be running with gusto for the Taupo winter fly fishing trips as listed below.
Tagged trout Competition
We only landed 67 fish this year, eleven short on last years total but the fish gods smiled on one of the crew as he drew a $3000 prize for accommodation at the Wylie Court Motel. Well done Richard!
Calendar Events for next five months
Closing Weekend for large Lakes Saturday 30th June 2001.
Fully booked I’m sorry!
Opening Weekend for new season and large Lakes, Monday 1st October.
First two days already booked fully. Scattered bookings from then onwards.
International Fishing Competition, November Thursday 8th – Sat 10th 2001
All lakes are included for this competition and the prizes are based around the size, condition factor, ladies, men’s and junior prizes, and the lake you fished on. Again an excellent prize list and well supported by entrants worldwide.
Entry fee $65/person. We have packaged a three-day special to cater for the tournament.
Three night’s accommodation, all food and boat charter for three days. $624/person.
Must have notification for places ASAP please. Three of four places available.
Fly Fishing Tongariro and Tauranga –Taupo Rivers (2 persons max per excursion)
Due to last years successes I will continue the trips to these rivers. We have secured a very comfortable holiday home between the two rivers for $45/night. Linen or sleeping bag with inner supplied is an extra $5.00/person per night. Food is shared cost by all participants.
The batch sleeps up to 6 persons comfortably and offers extensive Lake Taupo views. For the non-fishing days, Lake edge or river mouth fishing or tying up bombs and nymphs can fill in days due to rising river conditions or inclement weather. Only pay for guided days. Trips can be for as long as you like although most last year were from one to four days.
Guide rates are by quotation but one-day minimum is $500/day per couple, which includes all top quality gear and lunches.
To give indications of preferential timing please call.
