Subject: trout fishing

I am going to be in Turkey for three weeks next May and would like to find some place where there would be good flyfishing for trout or salmon. I would like it to be quite remote where we could hike in to get away from areas that are too heavily fished. Any suggestions?

Hi!
I am a population geneticist and I work on endangered Salmonid fish species.
I would be very grateful to anyone who could give me some information about the salmonid, endemiic to Anatolia, called Platysalmo.

Thank you.

Subject: Information

Hi,
I will inform you about the fishing facilities around Istanbul. In this case I will first inform you about the annual fishing schedule of the fresh waters around Istanbul.
Istanbul is a very big city with nearly 16 million population. Because of this, we must drive for a long distance for fresh water fishing
The close fishing places are the reservoirs, such as Omerli (ca.70km.) Sariyer (ca. 35km), Elmali (ca. 45km) and Terkos lake, Buyuk Cekmece lake and Kucuk Cekmece lake, which are natural lake reservoirs
Those watery areas are possible to fish;
- Omerli, Sariyer, Elmali reservoirs:
Carps (0.5 to 10kgs)
- Terkos Lake:
Pike (0.5 to 5kgs), Carp (0.5 to 20kgs),Wels (3 to 60kgs), Rudd (0.2 to 1.5kgs), Tench (1 to 5kgs), Bass (0.5 to 3kgs)
- Buyuk Cekmece, Kucuk Cekmece lakes,
Pike (0.5 to 5kgs), Mullet (0.5 to 2kgs)
Besides them are a numbers of small reservoirs for watering the agricultural areas with breaded carps, bass and pikes inside.
Towards the west district of Istanbul (Thrace) direction Bulgarian & Greece borders there are high mountains with numbers of rivers, that flow to the Black Sea (ca150km).
In those rivers it is possible to fish Rainbow trout (0.3 to 3kgs. – sometimes more-) and Brown trout (0.3 to 2kgs –also sometimes more-). On the mouths of those rivers it is possible to catch Atlantic Salmon. The mentioned Atlantic Salmons are fugitive fishes from the fish farms in the same area in Black Sea.
Because the high nutrient material in Black Sea grows the Atlantic salmons in huge sizes and it’s possible to fish very big exemplars of Atlantic Salmon specially in early spring on the mouths of some rivers in that area.
In the Greece border Southwest of Thrace is the Gala Lake (ca.300km) one of the biggest reservoir of water birds in the world.
In this Lake & River system it’s possible to fish Pike (0.5 to 5kgs), Wels (3 to 60kgs), Rudd (0.2 to 1.5kgs), Tench (1 to 5kgs)
On the East Side of Istanbul, between Istanbul and Ankara is locating a big high plateau starting with Sapanca Lake and with numbers of high altitude lakes and rivers to Black Sea coast (North side) and Middle Anatolia (South East side).
In the Sapanca Lake (ca. 120km) it’s possible to fish Rainbow Trout’s (0.5 to 10kgs), Pike (0.5 to 5kgs)
In that plateau it is possible to fish in lower geographical levels, Pike, Bass, Wells and Carps but the higher levels are like a paradise for Trout fishing.
I can select and indicate the 7 Seas, Suluklu Lake and Abant Lake from the numbers of fishing areas. Especially because, in that lakes are living one endemic species of trout only here in the world, with the scientific name Salmo trutta abanticus.
This is only a brief piece of fishing information about Turkey concerning only Istanbul area and the environment. There are also other numbers of untouched rivers & lakes in Turkey. Especially in the Black Sea Region, in Middle Anatolia and in the high areas South of Turkey are locating incredible places to fish Trout and other popular freshwater fishes.
Above was the basic information, for more & detailed information please don’t hesitate to contact with me via http://hobby.artuz.com

Tight lines,
Levent ARTUZ

(The distances as Km. are from the town center of Istanbul and the weight ranges are mainly according to my experiences.)
