Best fishing this summer continues to be in the upper half of the River. Early to mid-morning on drys. Joes Hopper and Yellow Stimulators are taking fish the 14-20" range size. Use a #12 or #14 and fish a long leader 10-12' on a 5x or 6x leader. Use a 7x on the fly. Weekend water flows are producing the best. The walk in area this year is slow due to low water flows from last summer that cooked the bottom.
Streamers: Use wooley lightly weighted brown with flash. Spin Fishing: The hot lure is 1/8 oz. Brown marabou jig. Use ultra lite tackle with a 2-4 lbs. test line. Fish all structure and rock runs.

For a detailed Fishing Report please visit our site at www. ambassadorguides.com.

Visit our New Flyshop adjacent to the Lees Ferry Lodge. We are carrying the New Titanium Fly & Spin Rods the Colorado Fly Rod Company with David Ahn signature as featured in Fly Fisherman 2/200 best new Rods. Our prices are low for introduction to our new Flyshop and a great time to buy a Titanium.

Water Flows: 8250 cfs. early a.m. rising to 13,500 p.m. Weather has been beautiful with warm temps. and plenty of sunshine.

This weeks action:
Fly Fishing:
Fishing activity at the Ferry is a roller coaster ride due to eratic river fluctuations. If you hit it right, fishing can be great. Dry fly action is good with very large hatches of midges. We recommend a #16-#18 adams pattern on 7x, and a dropper fly preferably a midge pattern #22 on 8x. A #15 wuff and bead head zebra dropper 6x-7x #18 zebras.

Spin Fishing- still good drifting cheese colored egg patterns and droppers with San Juan worms.

March 5
As far as the fish are concerned, spring seems to have arrived at the Ferry. The last couple days have seen some of the best fishing in months with good numbers of fish being reported by most guides and visitors at the Marble Canyon Flyshop. This can be attributed to increased sunlight and a slight drop in river flows for the month of March. Most bars are getting at least a few hours of sunlight each day now. Notable catches include Al Schuh of Valencia, California, a regular visitor to the Ferry. Al landed three fish over 20 inches-a 21.5, a 22 and a 24-today. Small zebra midges, sizes 18-22, seemed to be the most productive although scuds also produced and a few fish were taken on Unbelievables on the rising water. We are looking forward to a great spring!!

Subject: Lees Ferry on the Colorado

Dear Anglers,

Fishing is slowly improving and there is talk of no spike flows or severe drops this summer. Let's hope this to be true. The larger fish are there but they are not where alot of anglers are used to seeing them. 4 Mile bar always has fish and is fishing well. Prop bar is holding good fish but they are touchy. Try dry & dry droppers, dry and bead head zebras and streamers (wooleys) are all working okay. A size 14 royal wuff with a #16, #18 zebra should catch fish in the flat waters. Dead stick your streamers and watch the farthest point of your line. Brown and olives, grey and olives #6, #8's.

Now booking for Stripers on the Flyrod at Lake Powell. Saltwater type fishing for the avid anglers.
May through October.

Subject: Lees Ferry on the Colorado Fly/Spin

Dear Anglers,

Fly Patterns: This Weeks Action Lees Ferry:

Woolly buggers and zebras have been the call all the last couple of weeks. Our newest introduction brought in from the outside (Client) is the beadhead "b" monkey. This is a streamer pattern that has brought some big fish out of hiding. The dry and zebra dropper has been producing a lot of fish that were hurt this summer from the low flows are starting to put on a little weight, but still have a ways to go. Some midge hatches were out this week with the warmer weather. We still have March to go, so keep the 5-6 wt. handy (wind). March, April & May will be better and summer fishing here means "fat" fish and "less" crowds. For some nymphing, it's the breakfast special (meat & eggs) a small egg pattern cheese colored with a zebra midge-copper & black sizes #16-#18.

Spin Fishing

Drifting large egg patterns with a large 2" in San Juan dropper is a sure bet for quality fish. The drift presentation is important. Make sure you are fully spooled up with lb. test line. I like a lot of leader (fleuro flex). Put a 1/3 oz. split shot above the knot on the leader and tie the egg on about 16" from the bottom. Then the worm on last. Try to keep this even with the boat; not up stream, not down stream but even. Keep fly patterns clean and cast a lot.

Now booking for Stripers on the Flyrod (Saltwater type fishing) and Stripers spin/bait May through October 2001. Tubers welcome.

Water Flows 8,500 cfs - 14,500 cfs. am
9,500 cfs. p.m.
Fly Fishing

With the mild winter here (cold but alot of sunlit days) more and more quality fish being caught. There are still gravel bars that are fishless. Best fish are deep or i the flat water areas - for deep angling streamer on sinking line - olive & grey wooleys 4 & 6's. Back water try small attractor patterns 14 & 16's royal wuffs, trudes & humphys. Fish with a size 18 bead head copper & black about 18" on the dropper 7x.

Spin Fishing is excellent in deep runs. Fishing jigs 1/8 oz. on ultra lite tackle.

Now booking for Stripers on the Fly rod at Lake Powell. Saltwater type fishing for the avid angler May through October.

River Flows: Weekdays 9,500 to 17,500
Weekends 17,500

This weeks action:

Most big fish are still holding in deeper pockets in which case when found, they will take a large fly; a weighted wooley or trout imitation streamer. Alot of fish are digesting their eggs this season and this has stressed the fishery. I look to better conditions this summer (more sunlight)for fatter fish if the "enviros" do not pull the plug on the flows again. For nymphs, we recommend 12' leader 6x tippet with zebra dropper and olive scud combos. Also, egg combos - small flies cheese color - 2-4 #6 shot and indicator at the top end. Drift even with boat or wade deep. Early morning stalk new tree lines fishing outside in for drys - 18-22 griffiths nats 7 & 8 tippet.

Now booking for Stripers on the Flyrod at Lake Powell
April through October 2001 Saltwater Type Fishing - Tubes welcome.

Water Level 3672
Water Temp - 49-52

Fly Fishing: Crappie on the Fly can be good right now in the back of Canyons around tree lines. Also working well for small & large mouth bite-holding well through mid-day till around 4 PM. Weighted shad streamers (1" in length). slow retrieve. 7 Wt. Rod a must.

Spin Cast:

Stripers in Canyons can be caught jigging in 50-100 feet of water. You can find the fish if you can find the shad on the fish finder (stripers will be near). Try drifting with them if there is a proper breeze to do so or stay over them with trolling motor. 12-15 lb. test line on a short stiff rod. Use a "hopkins spoon" with hair tail. Drop spoon to fish and then rip it violently straight up. Look for your pick up on the drop-set hard and fast. Good days expect 5-10 fish.

Now booking for Stripers on the Fly Rod for Spring - Also tube it Florida Style for Stripers on the Fly.

Water Levels Weekdays 9,500 - 17,500 cfs. Weekends 15,000 cfs.

Fly Fishing: Deep water streamers on full sink lines are in order this Winter for best fish. If you are anchoring in the channels, be sure you have an adequate boat that will not be drawn down with rising waters. Your fly has to be more than half the depth of the weater you are fishing - 4x tippet - 7 1/2 leader. Experiment with slow and fast strips (retrieval) set hard. Best Fly - imitation "rainbow minnows", "black maribout streamers " with a little flash.

Spin Cast: Jig fishing main river channels with 8 ounce brown/orange maribou jigs on 2lb. test ultra lites. This seems to be working best for retrieving sizeable rainbows 16"+.

Gift Certificates available for Christmas. Check out our December Specials.
