Today I had veteran angler Don Bates from Florida on my boat fly fishing for Peacock Bass. We left the docks at 7:45 AM and loaded up with sun block know that it was a going to be another Florida 90+ day again, but the best conditions for fishing peacock's. Don started his day off with a 2.5 Lb peacock on a clouser minnow then fallowed by a 4 lb., needless to say , he was hooked. Then I lost one at the boat about 5 lb. as I was trying to create a top water bite. Around noon, with the sun beating down on us, we decided to head for my watering hole , Sonia's for a great lunch. After lunch we worked the canals of Miami a.k.a. "The Venice of Miami" with continued success. Then at 3:30 , look what Don caught (pictured above) and his last fish of the day , this beautiful 6 LB. 8 oz. Trophy Butterfly Peacock Bass to end another great day with "The Hawghunter" Capt. Frank Carbone. Pound for Pound the Peacock Bass is the hardest fighting freshwater fish you'll find. Give a call and come on down to South Florida and find out for yourselves. Good Fishin'. Subject: Florida Everglades Largemouth
I spent two days with Bill Berger from California & Mike Anson of Florida. After a good day of Peacock Bass fishing on Tuesday catching 18 up to 3.14 lb. We headed to the "Glades" for Largemouth on Wednesday. That's the nice thing about fishing South Florida is that "The Hawghunter" can show you both Peacock & Largemouth fishing in the same trip. Today's trip was fished with all artificial bait we started out on the Alley. Moat of the fish were small in the 1.5 - 2 LB range. Throwing Gambler Flappin' Shads (any color) through the pads. Also we wormed the bottom, and dead dropped centipedes and bacon strips. Both, have never fished this kind of cover and environment, enjoying the fishing, scenery, and wildlife the Glades has to offer. After catching 30 + Largemouth with a few bream added, I decided on the way in to try L-68 in hopes to catch a larger bass. Once there we caught two nice 4 LB. bass to complete a nice 2 day fishing adventure with a lot of fish, pictures, laughs, and memories to take home. "The Hawghunter" is Capt. Frank Carbone who guides 7 days a week, if your planning a summer vacation to South Florida. Subject: Evergldes Bassin' 8.5 lb.
What a day for Carl Topika 7 his Dad Ken from California. They day started out fishing the flats of sawgrass having only boated 5 bass but experiencing 10 other massive explosions. The boys have never fished this kind of cover before or fished with flappin shads either. Both had enjoyed the experience to the fullest. After breaking for lunch I headed out to the Alley where I knew there were some larger bass. Once there to no surprise we started hooking up using centipede, worms and Flappin shads. Then at about 1pm we spotted a large female on a bed, the boys worked her going back and forth for about 2 hour trying everything to get her to bite. The victory was their at 3:05pm she finally ate, and the thrill of a life time for Carl began. Carl did everything right to land this great catch a 8lb. 5oz. 23-1/2"long and a 17-1/2" grith bass. The boys traveled 3,000 miles and got what they came for, a Florida Largemouth "Hawg." You to can be the next one to fell the thrill with "The Hawghunter" Good Fishin', Capt. Frank Carbone

Subject: Everglades Bassin'
With the bass still going through a transition peroid in the Everglades, the fishing continues to be slow.We had a tournament on Sunday out of 30 anglers only 12 caught fish, biggest being 3.73. I feel by next month the fishing should be back to normal, and we'll be to catch like the one above again. If anyone is coming down for Thanksgiving or Christmas and would like to go fishing for the day,"TheHawghunter" suggests going for either Peacock Bass in Miami or Largemouth On Lake Okeechobee, so call today to hold your date. Good Fishin'. Capt. Frank

Subject: Peacock & Largemouth Bass
Hi all, before I start out talking about how great fishing is down hear right now, I like to take a moment and talk about SAFETY. Maybe some of you might have about the fisherman that was struck down by lighting last Sunday while fishing a tournament in the Everglades. This is a friend of mine, Jeff Justice, who was only 100 feet from me when this all happened. Most of know that fishing is good during a storm or rain, now you can fish in rain, but for God sake if it is lighting or thundering, there is two things to due. 1. Take everything off the deck and lay down on the floor till it stops. 2. Secure everything and ride with caution, by moving your increase your odds of not getting hit. God was on Jeff side that afternoon after being air lifted to a hospital he regained feeling in his legs, he suffered a few scars and burns and a lose a feeling in a finger. Largemouth Now, back to fishing The Everglades is still one of the best Largemouth Bass fishing in Florida right now. In that same tournament the winning weight was 29lb. and big fish was 7lb.10oz. You don't want to hear about the one that got away. All the action was on soft jerkbaits, and some topwater. The better bite seems to be in the afternoon, eventhough we had our limit in the mourning, then culling out our smaller fish in the afternoon.
Peacock On Sat. the Peacock action was right on the money. The entire day we used only artificial baits. We started out pitching plastic mini craws into the holes and jigging rattletraps, to create strikes. Also a few were caught on topwater plugs. After a few hours of sight fishing we moved on to another location. One of my favorite spots, the Airport Lakes. Once there the action was started using countdown rapalas, suspended lures, traps and topwater. The day was cut a little short due to the weather, rain. At the end we managed to catch 22 peacock's and 3 snook. On Tues. I had the pleasure of taking out O'Neill Williams for his first Peacock adventure in the states. He was like all newcomers amazed by the aggressiveness, attitude, and fight these sport fish have. On film we captured great footage of the Peacock attacking the bait several times, striping the bait and coming back for more. By 10:00am we had almost enough footage for a segment, after taking a rain break and catching another 1/2 doz. peacock's we headed to Blue Lagoon for somemore great action, there the highlight was catching a 40lb. tarpon on a suspended lure all on film. So remember, with Peacock's the hotter months are the better months, if Florida is where your spending your next summer vacation or if you just want to get away for a few day give me a call or e-mail, you DON'T have to go to The Amazon to catch Peacock's. Good Fishin' The Hawghunter.

Subject: Bassin' in THe Everglades
The Bass fishing is still going strong,on the alley ,along L-68 and The Pines.I found the most productive baits are soft jerk baits, slowly working them a foot under the water. Also I've been having success with my old faithful," The Flappin Shad" working them through the pads.On Sunday my partner and I had 20lb.8oz.that's only 5 fish bag and came in 4th the biggest being 6lb.Eventhough there was a major fish kill out by The Pines fishing is still great.Early in the mourning you can also do well with top water baits such as bagley spinner shad which are now called stingers 3, bang-o- lures and Johnney Rattlers. And don't be afraid to use a spinnerbait when the wind kicks up in the afternoon. So like I've said before nows the time to come on down and join the fun while the fishing it at it's best. My guide service runs 7 day a week and for 1/2 day or full day trips to The Everglades. Good Fishin',"The Hawghunter".

BASS! BASS!BASS!, That's what in The Everglades has, last weekend no matter what you threw you'll catch fish. Just imagin catching a 28.53lb. bag of 5 fish and coming in second in a tournament. With the water level dropping the fish are stacked in the canals. It seems the best bet is top water baits, or flippin'. This past week most of my success came from swimming 12" worms and twitching smaller plastics with no weight. With no rain in the forcast this upcoming weekend should even be better. This Sunday is the 20th annual Bass-N-Fools Spring Fling Open tournament out at Holiday Park. The prediction is that you'll need 30 lbs. to win, were expecting a fantastic turnout with the fishing being so great and the weather being perfect, so come on out and test your skills with the best of them. And for all you out- of- towners, get down to South Florida and take advantage of Florida's best Bass fishing while it last, and The HAWGHUNTER would be happy to put you on them. Good Fishin'

Water Temperature: 76 Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater
The last two days of fishing were beautiful, but a little windy.Yesterday we fished mostly artifical catching 20+ bass on plastics jerk baits and some shiners, running them slowly along the grass. Today the was better and so was the quality, the biggest being 4.6, but like an old fish story, you should have seen the one that got away a 6-7 lb. that hit a jerk bait.Right now The Everglades are hot with fish and tournaments are being won with over 25 lb. and that with a 5 bag limit only.So come on down while the fishing great. Good Fishin' The Hawghunter.

Probably one of the best fishing spots in South Florida is the Everglades. Scott Freytag from Missouri caught this 8lb. bass on a topwater bait while fish in The Everglades near Maimi and Fort Lauradale. The next day Scott caught a nice 6 lb Peacock bass fishing in the Miami canals and lakes.Make plans now for your winter vacation. |

Pray for the BUCS. If fishing were as bad as the BUCS right now I would sell my boat and have a big garage sale on my dirveway to get whatever value my fishing equipment would bring. Not so at present. I have been having some of the best snook fishing in 5 years! Recently on an outing with my best customer, Brent Halvorsen of Sarasota, a 22 pound snook (44 1/2 inches long) was caught. OK you may say, but this was in the heart of the backcountry. (Wheybac-get it!). Without a doubt this was my largest snook in 30+ years fishing caught in nearly fresh water. And it wasn't winter condition that will drive the big girls back into the backcountry. What is more inportant, in two day's of fishing caught 50 snook! And many of these were above 30"! Lost count of keeper size. With bait everywhere on the outside, Brent and I would load up and streak back to the backcountry before most or all died from the fresh water. Non stop action ensued. Short lived, but what great action. With winter at our doorstep, now is the time for all to get those lure ready. Bait will begin there annual migration south leaving no other choice but to fish with schrimp or the tired and true lures. Some folks will not fish during the winter months. When the bait leave their usual haunts, some fisherman will not fish. A mistake for sure. It does take more effort to catch that snook with a lure, but the rewards of "making" old linesider bite that plastic is well worth the extened effort. Doing it the MAN"S way of fishing. Next article will have some hints and help to catch winter fish within the Everlgades National Park, for that matter, any place you might fish with mangrove structure. Tip of the week...... Hook sharpnest. Diiachi hook's. Keep in mind that sponsorship in not free road. I have to buy my equipment. Although the sponsor's I have do give me a price break, I still let go of some hard earned cash. One other thing, I don't solicit sponsor's for the sake of free material. I have to rely on everything to be of top quaility, if it isn't, you will not find it on my boat. My guest's fish better and the trip is usually more of a success. I have found the Diiachi hooks are of superior quality. In fact they are so sharp the hook will not stick you, but will actually cut. I handle those with respect. Try them. You will increase you hook-up's. |
