Subject: Lake Wilson May 17-18

The May 17-18 tournament winning fish ended up being a 20 plus pound striper which was weighed and released to fight another day. Almost all in attendance caught fish with the average size being 5-6 lbs. Planer boards and down rods caught most of the fish with shad being the preferred bait. The fish are still scattered but when you find them they are pretty hungry and in my opinion right on the verge of the spawn which means more big fish will be caught. Madd Jacks team finished first on the first day, fourth on the second day and second and third overall. Not bad considering that the team that beat us out of first were last years National champions. So sharpen your hooks, change your line, the big ones are on the tear! Madd Jack

Subject: April 25 Lake Wilson

This week the stripers have hit real good at times with numbers of fish in the 5 to 7 lb. range. We also caught a 21 lb. striper on April 25 pulling live shad on a planer board in 2 feet of water. This fish hit 4 or 5 times before taking the bait which in that shallow of water was a great show. Stripers are still being taken lake wide by the bank fisherman with stripers in the 10 lb. range being quite common. With the water temp. warming and hopefully the weather settling down a little the fish should really break loose soon. Good Luck

Subject: April 16 Lake Wilson

Due to the wind and other obligations I haven't been on the water since Friday but I have been in contact with other fisherman. We had a Kansas Striper Association tournament this weekend. 6' 3" won the tournament with several smaller stripers caught. I was on the water Friday afternoon and evening and the stripers hit good before sunset but according to the guys in the tournament the fishing got tough on Saturday and of course the good old Kansas wind messed up most of the days fishing on Sunday. This time of year with the wind and the cold fronts it sure can make the fishing tough. Almost all of the stripers caught this weekend were taken in 20 feet or less fishing from the dam to the river using live bait and trolling. I know that covers allot of territory but with the lake warming the fish are scattered lake wide and feeding shallow. With the water warming quickly the whites and the stripers are going to be in there pre-spawn pattern soon and that means they will be hungry. This is a great time to catch a lots of fish and those big females will hit bait like a freight train. KSA will host another tournament in May 17-18 which will be santioned by the National Striped Bass association for more info. go to http://www.maddjackstriperguide.com/nsba.html Good Luck

Subject: April 4-03 Lake Wilson

finally got on the water yesterday after a week of being away. I caught 7 stripers up to 7# pulling live bait on planer boards, missed at least that many more as the were short hitting allot. With the fronts coming thru like they always do in April and the constant wind shifts it can make the fishing pretty tough. I'm having no problem finding fish but finding the ones that want to bite is another story. My opinion is that the fish will usually fire back up about 48 hours after a front has passed, sometimes a little sooner. Last week I had found lots of stripers in the Minooka area which had moved and scattered. It seems the stripers are scattered lake wide and have heard reports of a few being caught on the wind blown points by wader fishermen at all over the lake. Good Luck

Well we finally got some much needed rain which raised Wilson about 3 inches. With the new water coming in it has scattered the stripers from where I was catching them last week but it has moved the bigger fish up the lake. Saturday I found stripers from Minooka point to the river but had a hard time finding any active fish. I did manage to catch 3 up to about 5#. I have gotten reports from the bank fisherman catching good numbers on the West end and a few in Hell Creek. The white bass are also moving towards the river with a few nice ones being caught trolling. I heard a report of a 5 walleye stringer which weighed over 21# taken on the dam trolling. With the water temp.on the rise the action will just keep getting better, spring is here and it's time to catch some biggun's. Good Luck

March 13, 03 The ice is mostly off with a few of the southern coves still holding some broken ice but the boat ramps are open and ready to fish. The last 3 days Hell Creek has been producing stripers, whites, and white perch with lots of large shad being snagged while fishing. Evenings have been best with wader fisherpeople and boats both catching fish! Hell Creek is a ''NO WAKE'' area so let be respectful of the bank fisherman and give them room to fish without spooking there fish. Years ago I was wader fishing and a boat came in on me with such a large wake I had to run towards the bank to keep the water out of my waders. Not to mention the boat spooked the fish so neither of us caught anymore. So please be respectful of others!! GOOD LUCK

Feb 22,03 The stripers have been hitting decent all week with lots of stripers in the 4# to 7# range being caught. We fished Saturday morning it was very cold and windy. The fish were hitting short most of the time but caught enough to keep your blood flowing. Notice the 17# Kansas Salmon on the right, nice fish wrong species! Go to http://www.maddjackstriperguide.com/reports.html to view pictures! Hell Creek and the River have been the best. Thursday at noon I watched 2 guys catch at least 10 stripers in 30 minutes, they were really in them! The cold and snow will certainly put a dampener on it for awhile but spring is just around the corner!!! Fish-ON

The ice is finally all gone and the fishing is starting to fire up. White bass, White perch and Stripers are all starting to feed in the backs of cove where there has been a little surface temperature warming. The warmest I have found has been almost 39 degrees but with the next few days of sunshine and 50 degree day time highs the bite should really start to pick up. Wader fisherman are also picking up a few wading wind blown points throwing white and chartreuse bucktails. Hell Creek has been the best but I fished the river yesterday and caught 1/2 dozen stripers up to 9#. I haven't heard of any walleye yet but the windblown points near the dam should be holding some big sows early and late in the day. Good Luck Madd Jack

Subject: Ice Fishing Lake Wilson Last Weekend

Ice Fishing Last weekend was excellent with hundreds of stripers caught. I would estimate that at times there were 150 people on the ice if not more. Many stripers in the 4 to 15 lb. range were caught and the largest I heard of was a 25 lb. HOG. I witnessed one fellow who had his limit on the ice catch a bigger fish only to keep it and place the smaller striper back down the hole, trying to convince me that he would survive. Once those fish are on the ice they are your limit and any striper caught from then on must be release without removing it from the water. This is Kansas law. I heard of and saw several people taking over there limit and didn't seem to care. Wildlife and Parks did show up but the guilty parties had hit the road. Stripers are here on a put and take basis and with the ever growing white perch problem we need as many stripers as possible to keep this perch under control, by all means catch your limit stripers are great to eat but please consider the fishing in the future for yourself, kids and grandkids, MaddJack

Subject: Ice Fishing Lake Wilson Jan 19-20

The last 2 days on the ice has produced a few nice stripers. The 19th one 17lb. and a 15lb. were caught in the Gravel Hill area. With good numbers on stripers in the 6 to 8 lb. category. White bass and white perch are also being caught. The ice never has gotten as thick as I like it and with the last 2 days of warmer weather it has thawed around the edges and is getting a little spooky. But with the cold weather coming in the next few days I would predict that this weekend the ice in the gravel Hill area will be a good 4 inches or more. The bait of choice has been 1/4 oz white and chartuese bucktails. With new ice always be careful if you go, fish with a friend and remember no fish is worth that cold life threatening swim. Good Luck

The fishing has been on and off with good numbers of walleye, white perch, and stripers being caught but as far as any pattern to the fishing, if there is any I can't find it. The bait fish are moving to the river end of the lake with the bigger fish following. The deep water points have been hot early and late in the day. We caught this 11 lber at sunset off a point in the rocktown area. Good luck and Merry Christmas http://www.maddjackstriperguide.com/images/photos/RG11.JPG

The cold front that hit us last week has certainly scattered the stripers. Fishing has been on and off since then with the stripers being scattered and suspended lake wide! However there have been times when they have really turned on last Saturday evening at sunset was one of those times. After several hours of fishing with only a couple of bites the stripers started feeding on top, I caught them on bait, bucktails and planer boards fishing the dam area in 42 feet of water, it was fun while it lasted. Outdoorcentral has released the story from our fishing trip in Oct. it can be viewed at http://www.outdoorcentral.com/prostaff/jhord/seeinstripes.asp with a video soon to be released. Despite the erratic winds and weather the last few days the stripers are on the feed bag, with the evening bite being the best. The last 2 days we have caught 33 stripers up to 5.5 lbs. with the larger fish just starting to feed, the largest I have seen caught this week was 10 lbs. We are fishing the Lucas park area with live shad in 42 feet of water, live perch have also been working good. The stripers are beginning to surface early and late but tough to approach. We did pull one 5 lb. striper surfacing with a 1 oz. bucktail. keep you eyes on the birds and they will let you know where the action is. The last 2 mornings I had the www.outdoorcentral.com extreme team camera crew out, they took allot of pictures and video. We had a great time, caught a few fish on bait and bucktails. Jeff Hord and crew were a blast, thanks Jeff. I will let you know when the story is released. Good Luck

Fall fishing is finally here with lots of stripers being caught in the dam to Lucas point area. Live shad, perch, and downrigging have been producing numbers of stripers up to 6 lbs. with the larger fish still hard to come by. The water temp. is in the mid 60's and the stripers are schooling and hungry. A few of the schools I have marked in the last few days have been huge, 40 feet thick and under the boat for several minutes. When they are schooled like this almost any method should catch you a few stripers. Good Luck!

As fall approaches it seems the fishing fever has hit once again, myself included. Water temp. is nearing the 70 degree mark and it is time for the stripers to begin schooling in force feeding up for winter. The last week on the water has been producing a few stripers to 5 lbs. with the bigger fish hard to come by. Bait fish are in abundance and easy to locate but the stripers are much tougher to find. Normally by mid-Sept. the stripers are feeding and easy to find, this year has been different. It seems they are just a little slow to start this fall and should really turn-on in the very near future. Most of the stripers we are catching are in the Dam area fishing in 32 to 42 feet of water with live shad, with a few being caught by trolling with downriggers. Good Luck

With increasing water temperature and the water sports people out in force Lake Wilson is still producing a few stripers up to 7 lbs. Most are being caught fishing 32 to 36 feet deep over various depth's of water. I can't seem to figure any pattern or place to catch them on a day to day bases so I just have to go look and try my luck. I did catch a school of small stripers, 4 lbs., surfacing at 7 AM along the face of the dam. Good Luck

The fishing at Wilson for the last ten days has been disappointing at best. With the lake levels rising the fish slowly shut down, once they started to release water it did improve for awhile and then went to slow as soon as the mud line was pulled to the main lake. The gates were slowed to 400 CFS this morning and the lake is near conservation level again. I just came back from fishing below the dam and caught 8 stripers up to 6 lbs, fishing minnows in the fast water. There were allot of stripers released so nows a good time to catch a few below the dam. Fishing conditions should improve rapidly now if the wind would slow to below 20 mph. Good Luck.

Fished wilson the evening of the 13th and caught 9 stripers up to 9 lbs, the largest was caught by the youngest in the boat, an 11 year old young lady visiting here from Hawaii. June 14 fished again this evening and caught 7 stripers up to 9 lbs. Fishing the Lucas park area with live shad in 44 feet of water. I saw my first school on stripers on top today they were small fish maybe 3 lbs. but at least maybe this is the beginning of the surfacing action. With the rains lately the lake level is up but is being lowered, water temp. is 71 degrees. Good Luck,

The last few days on northerly winds have slowed the fishing down a little but I am still getting reports of lots of nice walleye being caught. Most of the fish are being caught between Minooka and Lucas on live bait. Walleye fishing has also been excellent with a 9 1/2 lbers caught this week and lots of smaller fish. Hell creek area has gotten allot of pressure this last week from bank fisherman and boats but I haven't heard many reports of fish being caught. The bank fisherman are starting to show up in the Minooka area, the last few years there were some nice stripers caught fishing there. The main lake water temp. is 53 degree as soon as the temp climbs a couple of more degrees things should really bust loose.

The front that had moved thru the day before had certainly shut the fishing down. I did hear of a 16 lber caught the evening of the 6th and saw 2 stripers caught by wade fisherman in Hell creek one of the stripers I would guess at about 7 lbs.

Here in Kansas the ice has just gone off the lakes in the last few weeks and the stripers are on the prowl. I can find lots of nice fish in deep water but can not make them bite! This is shallow feeding time for stripers and as a result the wader fishermen are catching the majority of the stripers that are being caught along with some nice walleye and whites. Since I don't wader fish as much as I used to one way I catch these shallow feeding stripers is free lining shad. Free lining simply means using a hook with no weight and casting your shad away from the boat then pulling him around the area you want to fish with your trolling motor. Sounds simple right? Well try doing it with 3 or 4 shad, shad being a school fish will eventually find each other and then you get the fun of untangling there mess! One thing I do is tie a balloon above the shad at the depth I think the fish are feeding, release the balloon and feed out line until it is behind my boat the distance I want. I will then do this with however many balloons I feel I can handle according to the conditions for the day. I leave my reels in free spool with the clicker on to let me know when the strike occurs, I quickly take the rod out of the holder, point the rod at the balloon, engage the reel, let the fish take out the slack and set the hook hard! When you have allot of line out you have to set the hook real hard to compensate for line stretch. Give it a try there are times when this is the only way to get'um to bite, Good Luck

Lake Wilson is producing a few stripers for wade fisherman throwing jigs in Hell creek and the points near the dam. I have been on the water 2 times this week and had very little success. In my opinion the stripers are feeding shallow and hard to approach by boat. I have located stripers in the Lucas park area and the Duvall cove area but the bites have been hard to come by. This incoming cold front should push them out to feeding deeper and I'm looking forward to putting a few in the boat this week. Good Luck!

Subject: Lake Kanopolis, Wilson, Mar. 17

Got on the water Mar. 17 at Kanopolis looking for shad, ended up throwing the net for hours with only a few shad to show for it. Lots of dead shad on the banks everywhere. I did see several nice walleye being caught in the dam area and found allot of fish on sonar hanging on the breaks at 18 to 22 feet. Here's a report from Wilson from one of my email buddies " Thanks CC" I saw a 8-1/2 lb and a 5 lb Walleye plus some smaller ones , Some of which were taken from the Bank. I saw a 26 in striper and heard of more taken along with 42 nice White Bass in the 14-16 inch range. Some Crappie taken 8 to 13 inches.Water temp was about 42 deg near the dam. There were quite a few boats out Sat.

Subject: Cheney, Kanopolis, Wilson

With the last few days of nice weather my phone has been ringing with people wanting to know if the fish are bitting? Well to be honest I went to Wilson last Saturday with the intention of fishing for walleye but as soon as I arrived so did a cold front with lots of rain, wind, and cold. I have been getting a few reports thru the grapevine of walleye being caught at cheney by wader fishermen in the dam area. Kanopolis is producing a few white bass and walleye in the Loaders point and dam area. The wader fishermen at Wilson have caught a few nice walleye and whites fishing the points near the dam and in the Lucas park area. My boats been in the shop the last few weeks and it should be done today. I plan on being on the water allot next week and should have a more complete report then. Good Luck!!

High temperatures are keeping many anglers home and fishing has been slow. Fishing has been most productive in the early morning, late evening and at night. Catfish continue to be caught on Junnies and Sonny's dip baits. Soft plastic fished deep is producing catches for bass anglers.
