I am 7 years old and was fishing with my dad on 3/22/09 at the Cumberland River by the dam. I had a rod and reel with 10 lb. test line on it and a green and purple lure. I thought I had a snag but it was a huge fish. My dad said it was longer than I am tall. I am 45 inches tall. My dad took over and tried to bring in the fish and fought with it for almost an hour. Then the line broke and the fish got away. We have a witness as there was another man who saw the fish too. He thought it was a white perch but it didn't look anything like the pictures of white perch I found on the internet

I have never seen days like this! Bluefish that are in the teens already, and Stripers up to 40 lbs coming off the beach on bunker chunks. I got a 13lb weakfish 2 weeks ago. Photo Gallery is located at:

The only other fish boated were on a yoko zuri later in the day, from about an hour before dusk till dark. Fish'em deep and slow.....
the trout were full of back stone fly nymphs. had the match but could not get it deep enough.
Good luck and see ya on the river

Subject: Trout & Striper

The Striper fishing is really starting to pick up due to the low water in the fall. Stripers are hitting 6-14 inch Shad. Should see many 30 to 50 lb Stripers between now and Thanksgiving.
Trophy Brown & Rainbow Trout fishing could not get any better. Many Trophy fish caught on Nymphs while fly fishing. Use Shad Raps and Blue Fox Vibrax for Trophy fish if you don't use flies.

Fished the cumberland mon/tue.
we did an overnight trip."I have never seen that many trout in a river before"
I basically fly fished the river but my other 2 friends fished with the orange shad rap and crystal yoko zuri. They had better luck than me.
Fished from winfrey ferry to the traces. boated 40 some trout most within the 14-18 inch range. for the fly fisherman..... The trout were very wary!!!! Had to use a 6X tippet to get them to "Explode" on a size 14 BWO.......Awsome river

Brown & Rainbow Trout fishing is excellent even though they are generating a lot of water. I had an 8lb Brown on A Black Stone Fly Nymph. Also catching fish on The Prince, Pheasant Tail, and GRHE Nymphs.
They are also hitting Light Cahill and BWO Dry Flies.

Trophy Brown Trout fishing is still excellent and it looks like it will be the best year ever. We fished 3 days and had over 300 trout with the biggest being 12lbs, 10lbs, and 6lbs. All were caught on Rapalas or in-line spinners.
Dry flies hatching right now are Light Cahill, Yellow Sally, and Blue-winged olive. Nymph fishing with Prince, Pheasant Tail, and Gold Ribbed Hares Ear is excellent.

What can I say about the Striper fishing. Just look at the pictures and you can see what we catch. I could post photos all day like the ones below. This past week we had a 49lber, 48lber, 43lber, 42lber, and 7 over 30 pounds. All fishing is with live shad fished by several methods.

Due to the low amount of generation this year, the Trout fishing is as good as ever. Rainbow Trout are hitting spinners in gold or silver. Size of spinner depends on the flow of water. Very small for low water and large for high water. Brown Trout, up to 16lbs are hitting Shad Raps in Shad or Rainbow colors.
Dry fly fishing with small light May flies or Caddis in tan or brown is excellent. Fish under the surface with a Beadhead Woolly Bugger in Black for Browns or a Prince Nymph for Rainbows.

The Trophy Striper fishing is at it's peak in the Cumberland River. This week we caught 3 over 50lbs and 9 over 40lbs and released them all. Out of 50 trophy Stripers this year we have only kept one and that was a 45lber that a 15 year old girl caught. All fish have been caught on live Shad.

The Brown Trout fishing has been on fire in the Cumberland River. Many fish in the 10 to 15 lb range are being caught on Rapalas, Shad Raps, Stickbaits and spinners. The water is high and fast, but it is very clear and the Trout love these conditions. Biggest Trout last week was 28 inches and 9 lbs.

Brown and Rainbow Trout still doing excellent on both Flies and artifical baits. The best flies are Black, Brown or Dark Green Beadhead Wooly Buggers fished down stream. Also catching good fish on light colored streamers fishing the runs and fast water sections.
Rainbows are hitting Spinners and small spoons in Silver or Gold. Stay with the number 1 & 2 sizes when the water is low and clear. Browns are hitting Rapala type baits and are very agressive on cloudy days.

Trout fishing for both Brown and Rainbow Trout has been excellent the last couple weeks. Most of the large browns are caught on hard baits like Rapala and large twitch baits. Some browns caught on streamers, and Wooly Bugger. The Rainbow Trout have been caught on Beadhead Wooly Bugger in black, dark green, or brown. Many very large fish and the best part is that you can float fish from a Jon boat or wade the gravel bars.

We are a very short time from the start of our big Striper run up the river. The first big rain will start these big fish on a run that will last until late fall or early winter. Fish close to the world record (freshwater) have been caught the last 3 years and this could be the year.

Had guide trips on 2-2-01 & 2-3-01 and although it never got above freezing on either day we were able to catch many Brown Trout in the 18-24" range. Most of the fish were caught on Rapalas, but several good fish were caught on flies. Sucessful flies were a large black stone, bead head black bugger and a chartruse and white Clouser.

Water conditions are erratic but relatively good. Cold weather has slowed things down in more ways than one. Some fish are up midging in the middle of the day. Blue wing olives here and there, but not a lot happening with them. The big boys seem to be holed up deep eating big black stonefly nymphs.

Cold front has put the ixna on the ant hatch, but they should return as temps warm later in the week. River flows have been strange as well. Best fishing late in the day with light colored streamers and big peacock nymphs (i.e. prince)

Ant hatch has begun. Dry fly fishing excellent from 10 or 11 until about 3, depending on water conditions. Griffiths gnats working well during the hatch. Also, try a foam black ant with a black hard body ant dropped off the back. Killin' em Jerry. Killin' em. Big fish are primarily feeding around the ant hatch. Nymphs (princes, sowbugs, tennessee hybrids, etc.) fishing great early in the morning and again in the late afternoon. Streamer fishing late on the lower sections of river is busting big fish, also. Seen several 20"+ fish on nymphs late afternoon in the past couple of weeks (including two 27" browns). Water schedules are great. Peak flow at 8,000 cfs during the day. Lots of low water with good flow.

River fishing well. Weekday flows have been big fish water from morning until mid to late afternoon. Not many hatches outside of the occasional midge, but river is nymphing well with sowbugs and princes. Streamers also getting chasers, particularly dark colors such as the Yuk Bug or an all black Bugger. Healthy mix of rainbows and browns on the nymphs, with eighteen plus inch fish being boated daily. Good luck.
