Air Temp: High 32 / Low 26 Water Temp: 43 Water Elevation: 355.2 Water Clarity: Clear We’re right in the middle of an extended cold spell here in Kentucky. I’ve been on the water a good bit putting out brush, but I haven’t fished this past week. I have noticed a couple things of interest though. One…we’re getting a good, much needed, shad kill and this should make for better fishing this spring. Two….Nobody’s fishing. So, if you’re looking for peace and quiet, Kentucky Lake’s a good place to be right now. If you do have the urge to go, I’d fish 18’ to 25’ deep in the mouths of bays with jigs and minnows for Crappie. For bass, I’d fish 20’ to 30’ with a 1/4oz jig and finesse worm. The best action might be fishing a 1/4oz jig head and minnow 30’ to 40’ deep on the main river channel for Sauger. The action should get real good with the next warm spell. Hope to have more info for you next time! Capt Kirk, out! |

Need information on Kentucky/Barkley lakes. Four of our club members (Lake Charles, LA) will be fish in the Women's Bass Fishing Assn. Affiliate Club Championship during the week of 6/20. Only a couple of us have fished these lakes & only once each several years ago. We need all the help we can get! Would appreciate hearing something prior to June 19, which is when we'll be leaving for Kentucky. |

Well the fishing reports have be abandoned for awhile. They was other pressing isssues such as waterfowl season, which was bad. The mood has gotten back to fishing. The past few days we have all been busy dropping brush piles for crappie. We dropped sixteen tops today before the snow and leaking half sinking pontoon drove us in. Fishing has been slow all along the north end of both lakes this winter. With all the extra rain we have had, which we could have used a bit of last summer, the winter has left most fishermen at home by the fire. The lakes are getting back to normal and we will be fishing next week. I will have the first fishing report of the year and will keep you posted weekly on the new fishing season. Buy new hooks, change line and clean that gob of something you forgot about out from the bottom of the tackle box. |

Fishing is still slow on both Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. The heavy rains this past week have both lakes muddy with a strong current. The levels seem to change daily and keeps what few fishermen that are out guessing. The weather forecast is for s few days of dry. This will help to get our lakes back to normal. Fishing pressure is low.
The report next week will include the fishing show schedule that Hook Line & Sinker will be having a booth in the next two months. Hope to see everyone at the shows.
Everyone from Hook Line & Sinker Fishing Guides would like to wish everyone a very happy holiday season.

The lake levels are back to normal and crappie fishing has picked up some. Smallmouth are also hitting better on Kentucky Lake. The reports are scattered, because of the like of fishing activity. Many of our outdoors people are hunting waterfowl and we also have had some really wet weather. In the next few weeks we will be including some "How To" articles. We hope these will help you catch more fish when you visit Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.
TIP: Be extremely careful when on and around the cold water.
BITS AND PIECES: When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever. In it's place is something you have left behind...Let it be something good. |

Both Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley have been dropping quickly and are almost back to winter pool. They are both still muddy, especially Lake Barkley. Fishing is still slow for most fish but should be getting much better this week when the levels stop dropping.
TIP: Use darker colors for muddy water.

We've been gone for a couple of weeks and it's good to get back on the water. Crappie fishing has really improved the past week. Some really nice catches have come on minnows along the drops at the mouths of the bays on both lakes. Jigs cast around brush in about 10' to 12' feed of water is catching some good fish during mid-day. Smallmouth are good along the gravel banks in Kentucky Lake. Most are being caught on jig/pork combinations in dark colors. Largemouth are spotty along the deeper points. Bluegill are slow as well as whitebass. Catfish are being caught below the dams on nightcrawlers and cutbait. Remember that fishermen are not allowed within two hundred yard of the dams since September 11. We have a major rain and cold front on us today, which will slow fishing for a few days.
TIP: Remember to fish slow as the water cools.
BITS AND PIECES: Always look for the good, the bad will show itself.

Fishing is not so good this week. Largemouth are still slow as well as crappie. The crappie are scattered and are being caught at different depths and on different baits. Minnows and jigs works as well as each other. Smallmouth are probably the best fishing at this time on Kentucky Lake. They are hitting both small crankbaits and jig/pork combinations. Bluegill are fair and catfish are slow. The record cold fronts and the heavy rains have scattered the fish. The lakes level came up 3 !/2 feet in four days. It then dropped back to winter pool in five days. This has hurt our fishing. The good fall fishing is ahead of us and should be back to normal in a few days.
TIP: Don't stay on the same patterns too long. Change with the weather and lake conditions.
BITS AND PIECES: If you think you can't, then you probably can't.
NOTE: My son and myself will be in South Dakota hunting pheasant next week. There will be no fishing report, but hope to see you the following week after we get back on the lake and on line.

Crappie fishing is still slow. The gates were closed on the dams yesterday, so we should see a turn-around anytime. The crappie are scattered now and only a few being caught in each location. Largemouth are fair along shallow wood in both lakes. Lake Barkley seems to be producing the best at the points close to the mouths of the bays. Smallmouth are good on small crankbaits and small plastics on Kentucky Lake. Most are on the pea gravel banks. Catfish are good along the shallow drops inside the bays on both lakes. Nightcrawlers are the best bait for the catfish. Bluegill are fair to good along the rip-rap.
TIP: Find the shad and you will find the largemouth in October.

Fishing is slow. We had a major rain front come throughout Kentucky last Friday and a strong cold front on Sunday night. The lakes are near summer pool and some of the gates are open on the dams. Our good fall fishing has not started yet. The lakes will have to get back to winter pool before fishing get back to normal. Crappie are scattered and slow. Most are being caught on minnows along the drops found inside the bays. The depths are from 12' to 17'. Largemouth are being caught along the same drops. Some are being caught on spinnerbaits around the docks but they are also scattered. Smallmouth is the best bite. Most are being caught in Kentucky Lake. Small plastic worms and small crankbaits are catching the most from the secondary points inside the larger bays. Catfish should be considered slow and bluegill only fair.
TIP: Smallmouth are effected less by cold fronts than largemouths.

Catfish are still on the rocks. The blue cats are still spawning and some channels have not finished spawning. Nightcrawlers and leeches tipped with shrimps are really hot baits. Bluegill are finishing their spawn, but some are still hanging around the beds. Meal worms and crickets are good baits. Largemouth are good. Smaller fish are being caught close to shore. The bigger largemouths are on the drop offs. Carolina rigged worms are best. Deep running crankbaits are also a good choice. Crappie are showing up on the secondary drops. Some good fish have been caught on curly jigs and minnows. Whitebass are good on the hot days when the current is up. When the clouds are out and the current slow, whitebass will slow. A Mepps Long is catching good. Fish the Mepps Long on 6# and 8# line just off the bottom.
TIP: Whitebass like current.

The lake levels are back down to normal summer pool. When current is running the whitebass are hitting good. Mepps #4 Aglia are the best baits. They are jumping early and late close to the shorelines with deeper water. Largemouth are good on the shallow drop-offs at the mouths of the bays. Deep crankbaits and Carolina rigged plastic baits are the best. Bluegill and catfish are finishing their spawns and are still hitting good, Bluegill are hitting crickets and worms, Catfish are being caught on nightcrawlers and shrimp. Most of the cats are being caught under bobbers set at six feet, along the rocks.
TIP: Remember to find current in summer for the good bite.

Fish is fun. Catfish are spawning on the rocks. Most are being caught on bobbers set about 4 feet. Nightcrawlers, leech and shrimp are all catching their share. Are the sum comes up fish at 10' to 12'. Bluegill are also bedding and are hitting a number of baits. Most of the beds are about 6' to 8' deep now. Largemouth are being caught in the brush on plastic worms and spinnerbaits. They seem to be running small but the action is great. Whitebass are slow due to the lack of current. When the lake levels begin to drop soon the current will be up and whitebass will go on a feed.
TIP: The lakes are near six feet above summer pool and some of the ramps can cause problems for one person getting boats in and out of the lakes.
BITS AND PIECES: You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there. |

Fishing is good. Kentucky and Barkley are about above summer pool and still rising. Bream fishing is excellent on both lakes. Crickets and nightcrawlers under bobbers are catching both bream and catfish. Both are bedding. The bream are along the normal summer pool shore. Shellcrackers are mixed with the bream. Any shoreline in the bays that have some buckbrush and somewhat sandy bottom have beds. The catfish are along the shallow gravel shorelines and spawning. Leeches and nightcrawlers are the preferred baits. They are also along the normal summer pool line. A lot of largemouth are being caught along the brush and other wood in the back of the bays. Plastic and spinnerbaits are catching. The bigger largemouth is in and under the bruck brush in the backs of the bays. Flipping plastic worms is also working. Crappie are slow and there is not a lot of activity to report. Whitebass is not good yet but is improving.
TIP: Sometimes a bit of shrimp on with you nightcrawler or leech is the little trick that seems to help on catfish at times.

Largemouth fishing is good. The fish are in the buckbrush. Most are being caught by flipping Texas rigged worms. They are holding very tight in the brush. Crappie are slow but some have been caught over brush in 12' to 15' of water. Mepps Aglia Long are catching the fish that are suspended over the brush. 0 or 1 blades are the better size. Whitebass are scatted but are beginning to show up on the flats. Bluegill and shellcrackers are along the normal shoreline. Crickets and night crawlers are working well. Fishing is good.
TIP: When the lake levels are high, as now don't forget the normal shoreline. Fish like to hold along this line of brush.

The crappie spawn is about over. There are still some very good catches showing you at the ramps. These late spawners are being caught on jigs and minnows. The smaller the bait the better. Catfishing is very good. The catfish are in a pre spawn mood. Most are about 20' to 22' close to the shoreline. Shrimp, nightcrawlers and leeches are working well. They are moving along the deeper rock shorelines that have channels nearby. Largemouth are hitting spinnerbaits and plastic worms close to the buckbrush. Bluegill are beginning to spawn and are hitting a lot of different baits. The early summer patterns are beginning to show. The water temp was 67 degrees in Lake
TIP: Think summer.

Crappie fishing is winding down for this years spring season. Some crappie are still being caught on minnows fished under bobbers around the shallow brush. The crappie are biting VERY early and VERY late in the day. The moon is going full and most of the fish will spawn at night. Largemouth and smallmouth are good. Largemouth are going to their beds as well as the bluegill. Largemouth are hitting shallow crankbaits and spinnerbaits around the yellow flowers and along the shallow pea gravel banks. Smallmouth are hitting on the gravel points close to the mouths of the bays. Bluegill are good almost anywhere now. They will spawn soon. Catfish have been caught close to shore on nightcrawlers and cut bait. Whitebass have been hitting well from the shore, below Barkley Dam. As the crappie season slows all the other fish move shallow.
TIP: The water is warming very fast. Change patterns often.

Crappie are spawning. The bigger fish and better catches are coming from 2 to 4 feet of water around wood. The fish are hitting VERY early and VERY late. Some fish are being caught during the day by drifting minnows. Largemouth and smallmouth are good. The largemouth are hitting spinnerbaits and plastic worms along the pea gravel banks. Smallmouth are along the shallow gravel points inside the bays. Bluegill are moving to the gravel shores and are hitting a lot of different baits. The lakes are at or about summer pool and with a few more inches of water it will reach the buck brush.
TIP: Fish early and late. The female crappie lay their eggs at night.

Crappie fishing is steadily improving. The crappie are moving around a lot and are not staying put long. Most are being caught casting jigs. No one color seems to do better than the next. Crappie fishing is still generally slow but some good catches are very scattered. Largemouth are close to the shores and the fishing is good. Shallow running crankbaits and jerkbaits are working best. Smallmouth are hitting well on small spinnerbaits and jig/pork combinations. Kentucky Lake is producing the better catches.
TIP: Change colors often.

Crappie fishing has finally started to get better. The lakes are rising for summer pool and the crappie are moving in and out from the shoreline with the sun and weather. They are not staying on the banks very long at a time yet. Fishermen fishing the shorelines casting 1/16 oz. jigs are catching most in 3 to 5 feet of water. The good catches are a matter of timing and being on a productive shore at the feeding times. Kentucky Lake has really cleared this past week and the better catches are coming from Kentucky just now. Smallmouth has been good on Kentucky Lake on small crankbaits and jig/pork combinations. Largemouth are good on both Kentucky and Barkley. Both are producing some very good fish on small crankbaits and jerkbaits. Fishing below the dams is poor because of the high water. The rivers are to begin dropping this week and river fishing will get better.
TIP: Remember the crappie are moving around fast and might be where they were yesterday.
BITS AND PIECES: If someone tells your he is coasting along, don't follow him. He must be going downhill.

To day really felt like a first day of spring. Scattered catches of crappie started coming in today. The past few cold cloudy days the largemouth have been very good along the gravel shoreline inside the bays. Crawfish colored crankbaits really caught come good fish. Smallmouth in Kentucky Lake has been good along gravel banks on jig/pork combinations. Snagging has been good below the dams. The levels are high below the dams. Crappie have been slow but the good fishing is ready to start. The big rains that cause the lake to get muddy and move the levels up and down has passed. The gates are closing on the dams and the water is clearing nicely, especially Kentucky Lake in the north. There are areas of Lake Barkley that are clearing but are harder to find yet. I looking forward to the few weeks of fishing.
TIP: If a fish can't see your bait, he might hear it.

We had two decent days on crappie this past week. The other days were poor. We have had 4 + inches of rain the past few days. The lakes almost up to summer pool. The gates are open on the dams and there is a very strong current in both lakes. Both are becoming muddy, especially Lake Barkley. We have been trying different methods and lure, but none have worked very well. With the weather, water levels and such fishing has not gotten started for us very well. Crappie fishing should be slow for several more days at least. The good side of this is the season has been slowed. We were afraid earlier that the crappie would spawn a bit earlier than usual. This weather should put the spring back on schedule. Smallmouth were hitting well in Kentucky Lake on jig/pork combinations along the points back from the stronger current. Whitebass and catfish are slow. We need a few days of sun.
TIP: After the week I have just had, your guess is as good as mine.

Today was a truly nice spring day. Crappie have been slow but the weather has not helped fishing. Today there were scattered catches of crappie caught in 10' to 12' of water. Most were caught on jigs. The water warmed today and some crappie moved fairly shallow. We have been expecting crappie fishing to get good for the past week or two. It looks like it is going to start soon. The water will really warm with a few more days like today. The same report came from both Kentucky Lake & Lake Barkley. Small mouth fishing is really improving on Kentucky Lake along the pea gravel banks. Small crank baits are catching most. Whitebass and bluegill are slow.
TIP: The crappie are going to start moving toward spawning when the water temp is in the low 50's.

Crappie catches are scattered. Some reports are of shallow catches and some on minnows fished deep. The weather the past weeks have been really changing. Some days have been sunny and warm and some really windy and cold. It seem to have crappie scattered. If the old March saying hold true then fishing should get really good any day. Smallmouth have been good on Kentucky Lake fishing jig/pork combinations. Most other fish have been slow.
TIP: Remember that stained water warms before clear.

What a difference a day can make. Crappie fishing has been scattered but picking up until Tuesday. We have a major cold front with high winds on us and fishing is not very good. Very few fishermen are out. Crappie and largemouth are slow on both lakes. Small mouth are only fair on Kentucky Lake. When we get some warm sunshine the sauger could turn on below the dam in the tail waters. Minnows tipped with jigs usually work best just off the bottom. We need a few days of better weather to get our spring crappie started.
TIP: When it 16 degrees with 25 mph north winds, stay home.

The water temps in both lakes have passed the 50 degree mark and fishing has really improved this past week. The weather has been very nice and fishermen are getting out in good numbers. Crappie are hitting minnows along the secondary channels and along the drops at the mouths of the bays. Both Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley are producing some nice crappie catches. Smallmouth are good in Kentucky Lake along the pea gravel shorelines. Jig/pork and small crankbaits are working best. There is little catfishing activity to report, but some good catches are being caught in the tail waters of Barkley Dam. Largemouth are still spotty and slow.

The very pretty weather we have had this week has brought out the fishermen. Activity really picked up on both lakes. A lot of us have been dropping brush piles for the crappie. Some work is necessary before the fishing begins. The crappie fishermen have been catching scattered crappie along the drop offs at the mouths of the major lakes. The secondary channels along the main lake also has been producing crappie. Most of the fish are being caught on minnows in 20' to 22' of water. There have been some smallmouths being caught in Kentucky Lake. Most are caught on jig/pork combinations. The water temperature today was 47 to 48 degrees. We still need a couple more degrees in the water temp to start the crappiue moving toward the bays. The smallmouth will also pick up when the water reaches 50 degrees. There has been little catfish activity. A few catfishermen are catching below Barkley dam on cut bait. Largemouth are slow.
TIP: Water temp in late winter is very important to start the fish moving for spring.
BIT AND PIECES: Once burned, twice removed.
