Lake Michigan fishing report, port of Grand Haven 4 October 2000
About all we can say is that the sunshine and pleasant temperatures allowed us to sit on the beach and watch the waves break over the pier heads. Though we would have rather been out on the lake fishing for salmon and steelhead, for the most part the weather and wave conditions did not allow that to happen. Those boats that did get out on the one calm day this past week had to hunt long and hard for the fish. We know that the fish are out there and once the water stabilizes it should make for better fishing. When that does happen, any lure with orange on it will be great for steelhead. As for salmon, try your luck with an assortment of colors until you find one that works. Depths may be anywhere this time of the year. If the water temperature is cool enough the steelhead should be in the top 30 feet.
This is our final fishing report for this season. We're looking forward to next season and will be back with our weekly fishing reports for the port of Grand Haven.

Lake Michigan fishing report, port of Grand Haven September 27, 2000
Typical of this time of the year - the winds and weather have kept the boats off the lake most of the past week. When the rain stopped and the waves subsided to a moderate size, boats were out but the catch was meager. The one day anglers had success, the catch included steelhead and coho salmon. The 4 year olds are up river so you are searching the lake for 2 and 3 year old salmon and steelhead. Stinger style blades with orange tape were taking the steelhead while the salmon were coming on antifreeze, hawg wild and dolphins.
The south winds have blown in very warm (for this time of the year) water. The warm water is extending down to depths of 60 to 70 feet or more. This makes it necessary to head out to deeper water and hunt for the fish.

Fishing report, Lake Michigan, port of Grand Haven September 20, 2000
Fishing on the big lake has been almost non-existant this past week. The winds and weather have played havoc with any plans to go out after salmon. Charter boats and private fishing boats have remained dockside. Those hearty enough to venture out have tried fishing in the Grand River. They have seen very limited success. We know that there are still fish off the river mouth and fish at 150 feet and deeper. All of this is typical of fall fishing on Lake Michigan. We hope to have a more detailed report next week.

Fishing report, Port of Grand Haven, Lake Michigan 13 September, 2000
The past week has been a rough one for area fishermen. Conditions went from fair to rough on the lake with many charters being canceled as the wise choice was one of not venturing out.
Boats that did get out today (9/13/00) found fish in 30 feet of water just south of the pier heads. Fish in this shallow water are coming on J-plugs and magnum size spoons. There are fish out from 150 to 260 feet but weather and wave conditions have kept the boats in much closer to shore.
I'd advise that anyone considering fishing in the big lake this time of the year be cognizant of the changing weather and lake conditions.
You'll want to check with area sporting good stores for the latest news on fishing. Gold Coast Outfitters in Port Sheldon and Steve's Shiner Shack in Spring Lake have staff that are more than willing to provide you with up to the minute fishing reports.

Fishing report, Port of Grand Haven, Lake Michigan September 7, 2000
It has been an interesting week in Grand Haven. The first part of the week the East winds and cooler weather brought a large number of fish into the Grand River. Limit catches of Chinook and Coho Salmon were being taken on J-plugs and large spoons. Fish were being caught both in the river and right off the river mouth. The winds shifted mid-week and with the warming water, the fish have really slowed down. It appears that the best water temperature for fishing is in deeper waters - 100 to 200 feet. However, the rough sea conditions have made this difficult at best.
In the Grand Haven, Spring Lake area you may want to check with several area sporting good stores for their suggestions and their selections of lures. I have found Gold Coast Outfitters in Port Sheldon and Steve's Shiner Shack in Spring Lake to offer a good variety of lures. Staff at both places can provide you with up to the minute fishing reports especially with the daily changing conditions.

Fishing report, Port of Grand Haven, Lake Michigan September 1, 2000
The past week has seen area anglers bringing in nice catches of Lake Trout and Salmon. There are a lot of fish from just outside the pier heads to 250 feet of water.
J-plugs are working well in the shallow water. Out deeper the lures to use include white dodgers and white or monkey puke flies. We found success on a variety of lures including Stingers. One hot lure was their "Hog Wild." Bloody nose and Dolphins were also bringing in the fish. In the shallows, the best depths were from 20 feet on down to the bottom. In deeper water, lure depths ranged from 65 feet to 110 feet.
Steelhead were also being caught on dipsy divers with orange and silver lures.
Chinook Salmon caught are weighing in between 18 and 30 pounds. Coho are running in the 8 to 12 pound range.
With the high air temperatures this past week, water temperatures are on the rise. You will need to adjust your fishing depths accordingly.

Fishing report, Port of Grand Haven, Lake Michigan August 23, 2000
It has been an interesting week for fishing in Lake Michigan off the port of Grand Haven. We started with east winds that brought the fish in close to the pier heads. This was followed by several days of south winds and then north winds. The fish have moved back out into deeper water - depths ranging from 150 to 230. We have been fishing from 75 feet to 120 feet down.
Steelhead being taken above the 75 foot depth. Dipsy divers with orange lures have been the most effective for taking these steelhead.
The salmon at the deeper depths are coming on white dodgers and white flies, bloody nose and dolphin lures. Along with large kings, coho are starting to show up.
There are very strong currents and it is necessary to keep a constant eye on your speed.

Fishing report, Port of Grand Haven, Lake Michigan August 17, 2000
Fishing in Lake Michigan off the port of Grand Haven - excellent! Good catches of Lake Trout, Coho and Chinnok Salmon, Steelhead and an occasional Brown continue to be taken. It is not uncommon to be catching Lake Trout in the upper teens and lower 20's. Coho are running 8 to 10 pounds with many Chinook in the mid 20 pound range. Surface temperatures of the lake continue to be in the 70 degree+ range. We are finding fish in water depths from 110 to 200+ feet. The surface temperature necessitates setting the lures from 75 to 120 feet down.
Best lures continue to be white dodgers with either white flies or monkey puke flies. When the sun is brighter, silver dodgers are also working well. Lures with glow tape above the dodgers are also working well at these depths.
Perch fishing off the piers is very slow due to the warm water.

Fishing report, Port of Grand Haven, Lake Michigan August 9, 2000
One word seems to describe lake trout and salmon fishing - excellent. This is some of the best fishing that the area charter boat captains have seen in a while. Catches are a mix of Lake Trout, Steelhead, Coho and Chinook Salmon. Chinook Salmon are running in the mid 20 pound range.Lake trout vary in size but many running in the 15 pound bracket have been boated. The surface water temperature off shore is in the 70 degree range. This is keeping the fish out in deeper water. The south winds this week have created fluctuations in the water temperature so it is necessary to monitor this daily for maximum success. For the best fishing, we are finding that it is necessary to head out to lake depths of 150 to 250 feet. The fish are ranging from 70 to 110 feet down. White dodger and white fly combinations really have been the most effective. Lures to use include monkey puke, bloody nose, and dolphins.
Pier fishing has really slowed down due to the warm water temperature changes. A northwest or good east wind should bring the perch back in.

Lake trout and salmon fishing continues to be very good. There are a lot of fish between 130 and 200 feet of water. Fish are hitting from 75 to 110 feet down. Flashers and flies continue to be the best combination to use. Both white and silver flashers combined with the right lure above have proven to be the key to success. Effective lures include monkey puke, bloody nose, and dolphins. Lake trout caught have ranged from 8 pounds up to the 25 pound range. Mature salmon are being taken in the mid 20 pound range. Nice steelhead are being taken with orange lures producing the best results.

Fishing in Lake Michigan off the port of Grand Haven has produced excellent results. The success of the past several weeks is continuing. Very nice catches of Lake Trout, Chinook, Coho Salmon and Steelhead have been taken. It is not uncommon to land a Chinook in the mid-twenty pound range. Coho have ranged from 6 to 8 pounds. Lake Trout have been ranging from the 10 to 20+ pound range. Steelhead have been coming on dipsy divers set on 2 at 160 feet back. Orange colored lures have been effective for Steelhead. Best fishing has been from 100 feet to 220 feet of water. The hot lures continue to be white dodgers and white flies. Stacking these with bloody nose colored lures has been working well. Watermelon and dolphins have also been effective. The fish have been hitting from 55 feet down to 100 feet.
The currents continue to be very strong. This makes it necessary to continually monitor your boat speed so that your lures are running properly.

Lake Michigan fishing report, Grand Haven area July 13, 2000
Lake Michigan fishing off the port of Grand Haven continues to be very good. Very nices catches of Lake Trout, Chinook, Coho Salmon and Steelhead have been taken. There have been several catches of Chinook in the mid-twenty pound range. Coho have ranged from 6 to 8 pounds. Lake Trout have been ranging from the 10 to 20+ pound range. Catches have also included an occasional Brown Trout. Best fishing has been from 100 feet to 200 feet of water. The hot set-ups continue to be white flashers (dodgers) and white flies with the bloody nose stacked above. Watermelon and dolphins have also been effective. The fish have been hitting from 65 feet down to 110 feet.
If you can find the schools of bait fish, that seems to be the hot spot for the salmon. We have noticed that there have been some very strong currents off shore. This makes it necessary to continually monitor your boat speed so that your lures are running properly.
Pier fisherman - some nice catches of perch have been taken near the ends of the piers and in small boats just off the pier heads. Minnows and small alewives continue to be the best bait.

Lake Michigan fishing report, Grand Haven area July 5, 2000
It was a great week fishing. We got through it without being blown off the lake. Nice catches are being brought in. The fish are ranging from 100 feet of water out to 220 feet. Best depths down are 75 to 120 feet. White flashers with white flies are still proving to be most effective in taking the deeper fish. Fish have also been hitting on watermelon colored lures. The catch has included Lake Trout (up to 20+ pounds), Kings, Steelhead and an occasional Coho.
Dipsey divers have also been taking some early morning Steelhead.
Perch fishing from the piers is still slow. The perch are in the 40 to 50 foot depth range. Small boats getting out and moving until they locate the schools have been doing better.

Subject: Lake Michigan fishing report, Grand Haven area
Windy weather and wave conditions have subsided and boats have been able to get out onto Lake Michigan. The secret is go deep and fish deep. The fish appear to be holding in the deeper water ( 150 to 250 feet). The comfort zone for the fish seems to be from 75 to 140 feet down. Flashers and flies have been the most effective lure at these depths. Colors have included white flashers with white flies and a bloody nose lure stacked above the flasher. The catch is a mixed bag but the predominate species being caught is Lake Trout. There have been some nice catches in the 20 lb. range. For the perch fisherman, the fish continue to move in and out of the pier head area. It takes a lot of patience to wait for them to move back to the piers. When the weather permits, the best bet seems to be use of a small boat and to just keep moving until you find them. Best baits are large minnows and small alewives.
