Subject: St. Joseph Lake Michigan fishing reports
5/04/03
This past week the fishing was pretty good with Coho, Steelhead and Kings to 20 pounds showing up in good numbers. The fishing should only get better. The fisherman are targeting anywhere from the harbor of St. Joseph all the way south of Cook from 30' to 60' of water. Some good reports of Steelhead in the deeper offshore waters are also coming in. Of course weather is a big factor, hit it right and you'll have some fast action. It's a great time to get out and enjoy the Great lakes out of the port of St. Joseph Mi.

Good luck and be safe Coldwater Charters

Subject: 4th of July fishing in Saugatuck, Mi.
Well the fish are here!! Salmon, both coho and chinook, steelhead and lake trout have showed up in 80 to 150 foot of water. The bait fish have been there for the last week and a half, however the game fish just found them. The catch ranges from 6 to 20 fish a trip, depending on the species you get into (coho and steelhead require 4 to 6 hits to catch one fish).
Down riggers at 30 to 55 feet with anything orange and something--orange and silver, orange and green, orange and gold, etc. Dipsy divers (with 180 foot of line dialed at 3, 120 foot of line dialed at 2 and 70 foot of line dialed at 1) with the same lures that are being run on the down riggers produced half of the catch. Lead core (single core) with dolphin, and orange crush and copper head works well.
Come join the fun and fish Saugatuck.

Subject: Fishing is improving in Saugatuck Mi.
The end of June has started to produce the fishing we expect out of Saugatuck. Salmon (both chinook and coho) and steelhead are the main fish in the catch. This past week we caught 5 to 11 fish each trip. The chinook ranged from 8 to 22 pounds while the largest coho was about 10 pounds (not bad for this time of the year). The steelhead all ranged from 6 to 10 pounds and the occasional lake trout ranged from 4 to 12 pounds.
We fished 100 to 180 foot of water. Dipsy divers with Bumble Bee Northport and Stingers and silver and orange Stingers and Dreamweavers worked very well for the silver fish. Down riggers at 40, 45 and 70 foot with Fruit Cocktail Stingers and Dreamweavers and silver orange and white Stingers and Dreamweavers worked very well. On one day, dodgers and flies produced some nice chinook. An occasional fish was taken on lead core (single and core and a half) with Dreamweavers and Northern Kings.
I think that our fishing in Saugatuck will continue to improve though July and into August. Contact us for fishing information toll free 1-888-253-8372.

Subject: Late June Fishing in Saugatuck, Mi.
Well, we still have our typical June fishing--slow!! As a rule this type of fishing happens every June for about a week and a half, this year we are going on 3 weeks.
The bait is here, the fish have not found them yet. We are taking anywhere from 1 to 7 fish a trip. Although the numbers are not real good the size of the fish is respectable--steelhead to 15 pounds and chinook to 22 pounds. We are fishing the same as last week--100 to 200 foot of water 50 to 110 foot down with down riggers, dipsy divers, lead core and drop weights.
I believe that we will soon be getting our traditional Saugatuck fishing back. Hopefully next week's report will be much better and the fishing more productive. Feel free to call at any time for a fishing update. Toll Free 1-888-253-8372

Subject: Skamania Steelhead St. Joseph
Steelhead fishing has been good the last couple of days at the St.Joseph Harbor. Strong NW winds pushed cold water near the harbor moving Steelhead in with it. Best fishing has been surface to 10 ft down using red Thin Fins on both the boards and riggers.
Good fishing Capt. Bill |

Subject: Mid June Fishing Out Of The Port Of Saugatuck
Fishing out of Saugatuck on Lake Michigan had hit the June doldrums. Every year (sometime in June) the fishing gets very tough. Because of the low pressure areas and the storms that have constantly hit the area, the fishing is slow. The water temperature is 60 degrees on the surface and 54 degrees 100 foot down. As a result, the fish are scattered from the top to the bottom and from 60 foot depth of water to 250 foot of water. There are fish there, it is just very hard to fish the full depth of water. We should see a change in the temperature very soon.
Steelhead, lake trout and salmon are the fish being caught (we caught a steelhead that weighed just under 20 pounds). Drop sinkers with dodgers and flies, down riggers set at depths of 30 to 90 foot, full core and core and a half lead core and dipsy divers at 100 and 175 dialed at 1 1/2 and 2 1/2. A variety of lures are used and the type, color and sized changes from day to day.
Hopefully, next week will result in a much better report and our weather will stabilize and the typical Saugatuck fishing will return.

Subject: Fishing at Saugatuck 6/12/01
Fishing this week has been slowed with water temps nearly the same from top to bottom and out 30 miles. Catches have been from 2-6 fish per half-day trip. Hopefully, this warmer weather will establish the thermalcline and we can get back to the great catches we normally have. Productive this week have been Kalidascope Nailers, Flintstone Slammers and Big Daddys on downriggers 25-75 down, dipsy diver 45-150 out and leadcore (core and 1/2). Colors were Bubble green, Bubble orange, Hawg Wild, Bloody Noses and Bloody Dalmations. Come fishing soon! It's a great place to be! |

Subject: LakeMichigan / St. Joseph
Fishing out of St. Joseph lately has slowed in shallower waters, but Off shore fishing still is excellent. From 20 miles Straight west to North west is where you want to start Fishing For Steelhead and huge Lake trout. Scum lines and Temp breaks are what to look for. Bugs and Bait fish are what the fish are feeding on. Try Orange spoons from the surface to 25 down. Michigan Stinger spoons and Northern Kings are this Captains choice. Below 25' try greens and blues for best success.

Subject: Lake Michigan Salmon/St.Joseph
The below photo and the ones below this reports are what you can be catching on Lake Michigan. These catches are normal with some better and some not quite as good. Lake Michigan is a World Class Fishery and Only a few hours from most Midwestern States. Lately the Non existant Thermals have scattered Fish and made it harder to pin down exact Locations of big Schools of bait. With the new 3 rod per person limit you can take advantage of running huge spreads from Lead core, down riggers, Dipsies and even Drop wieghts. Even when the fish are scattered pulling 20 bais trolling makes it hard not to get hit's. Try Lake Michigan's Salmon fishing I'm sure you'll think the same as I and Others do " It's world Class.

Subject: June 3 Fishing Report
Fishing was very limited this past week. Morning trips resulted in decent fishing with light winds from the east to southwest. However, afternoon trips resulted in about two hours of fishing with winds shifting to the northwest and rough water. Saturday we had a family with children in the morning and decided not to fish the cold rainy weather and rough water. In the afternoon we fished 45 minutes before the wind shifted to the northwest and we had to go in. Sunday we had an all day trip with a party from Sandusky OH and winds up to 35 knots kept us at the dock. Fish are being caught in 100 to 240 foot of water. Inside we are fishing from 40 to 80 feet deep and outside in 200 foot + water from 25 to 60 feet down.
Again the catch was a mixed bag with salmon predominating and the rest of the creel consisting of steelhead and lake trout. The further out you go, the more steelhead you catch. Lead core (full core and core and one half) with dream weavers and northern kings in silver and glow green and frog glow colors where productive. Down riggers with stingers and northport nailers in orange crush, silver green sided, OJ Simpson and Stevie Wunder produced well. The dipsy divers with white flashers and green flies and stingers (hog wild, fruit cocktail, frozen monkey) at 60 feet dialed on 1 and 150 feet dialed on 2 and 200 feet dialed on three.

Subject: Memorial weekend fishing
he salmon fishing out of Saugatuck became very "iffy" over the weekend. Catches of 10 to 20 salmon up to 25 pounds could be caught in 100 foot of water IF you got there early and IF you hit the right spots. IF not you would be lucky to catch 5 or 6 fish. Saturday we got out late in the morning and had not had a hit by 10:30. We pulled lines and went out to 200 foot of water and in the last hour and a half had 15 fish on and boated 8 salmon, lake trout and steelhead. Sunday produced wind and we only started fishing at 8:30 and we where back at the dock by 10:30 with 5 fish. and sick and cold passengers. If you fished in 100 foot of water the fish came 75 to 40 foot down on the down riggers, lead core and dipsy divers 200 foot dialed on 2 1/2. Orange and green in stingers, dream weavers and small northern kings.

Subject: King Salmon out of Port Saugatuck, Mi.
Fishing out of Saugatuck is really picking up. King salmon up to 20 lb. where caught this past week. The charter boats have been taking 10 to 25 fish per trip. Fishing from 60 to 180 feet, salmon where found in the shallower water and as you went out, we caught lake trout and steelhead and a few salmon. Down riggers where e fished from 25 to 60 feet with stinger, dreamweavers and northern kings in the green dolphin, green side and orange crush pattern. Dipsy Divers are dialed out at one with 90 foot of line, at two with 130 foot of line and at three with 160 foot of line with orange crush, and green sided stingers and dream weavers. Lead core and flat lines also produced some nice salmon and steelhead. Magnum lures where very productive on the lead core and anything with orange and green worked on the surface. As long as we do not see a major change in the weather, we should hold this fishing for the next few weeks. Come out and enjoy the fishing out of the port of Saugatuck.

Subject: Lake Michigan Report
A banner year is the best description for what's been taking place this season. Fishing looks like it's going to slow, then suddenly becomes better yet.
All of the species have been in our catch as of late, with King's most numerous and steelhead second. A few of the kings showing up have been in the 25# range. These fish have been moving on us. There's been a fair amount of cold water this year along with a good bait supply. Find the bait and you've got the fish. The last few days this has been 170' to 240' of water, fishing 65' ti 105' down. |
