Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods and Rainy River
Fishing Report
April 28, 2003

Here’s the news for Lake of the Woods. Zippel Bay saw its Annual Ice-Out Trophy Pike Tournament this past weekend. There was ice in the bay Saturday but it disappeared Saturday night. Five fish caught were over 40 inches which carried much excitement. Zippel Bay Resort headquartered the tournament for departure and weigh-in. Here are the results. 1st Place: Steve Holmbly, Fargo and Mike Powers, St. Cloud - 31 lbs. of northern; 2nd Place: Mark and Nancy Carlson, Warba - 28 lb. 14 oz. ; 3rd Place: Dan Christopherson and Andy Erickson, Roseau - 24 lb. 4 oz.; 4th Place: Jacson and Godfree Svir, Thief River Falls - 23 lb. 11 oz.; and 5th Place: Les Baldwin, Roosevelt and Aaron Baldwin, Holt - 22 lb. 15 oz. 1st Place received 50% of cash from entry fees. It was an excellent time for all.

The Rainy River and Four Mile Bay have seen great action while sturgeon fishing. They are jumping out of the water and anglers have seen and caught good ones. Vern Gens of Mankato caught and kept a 48” sturgeon on Four Mile Bay. Sturgeon season closes on Wednesday, April 30.

The 2003 walleye season opener is May 10, 2003. The DNR has announced that Mom’s may fish without a license on May 10 - 11 which is Take a Mom Fishing Weekend.

Bear license applications are due by May 2nd this year.

Subject: where are the fish?

I've never been to the rainy river fishing and just found out about the quality walleye fishing up there. I would like to take a trip there but have no idea where to even start. There is alot of nice fish being caught and i would like to hook a few before i head off to boot camp navy style. If anyone would be willing to share some quick tips or even point me in the right direction i really would appreciate it.My E-mail is posted and once again thanks to all that reply and the best of fishing to you.
