Subject: Report for 4-06-01
The Bitterroot River is in great shape for the early spring that we are experiencing. It is quite different from last year when we had higher temperatures and many different hatches.
River flows and water temperatures:
West Fork - 115 cfs Darby - 364 cfs - 36 degrees Near Missoula - 970 cfs - 42.6 degrees
The Skwala hatch continues but with less bugs on the water that we have seen in previous years. The colder water and air temperatures have slowed the hatch but probably prolonged it into May. Fishermen are reporting taking many fish on a trailing Skwala Nymph behind their Skwala dry.
March Brown's also continue to hatch sporatically on warmer afternoons as do the small Blue Wing Olives.
Patterns to fish are: Skwala Dry #10, Skwala Nymph #10-12, Blue Wing Olive #14-20, Adams #14-20, March Brown #12-18 and Blue Dun #14-20.
Good Fishing.
