The International Game Fish Association announces the imminent release of its long-awaited history book, Big Game Fishing Headquarters: A History of the IGFA Full Scale Release in August DANIA BEACH, Fla.… After years of anticipation, the IGFA has announced that it will release a special first edition of its history book Big Game Fishing Headquarters: A History of the IGFA later this summer. Written by award-winning copywriter and IGFA Representative Mike Rivkin, the work is a comprehensive look at the development of big game fishing and the IGFA’s pivotal role in same. The book will focus on the IGFA’s event-filled 66-year history and include more than 200 heretofore unpublished photographs and documents from the IGFA’s enormous archives. “Indeed, this is the first time that the IGFA has ever given a writer access to the vast store of its internal records,” commented IGFA President Rob Kramer. “Every long-time member and friend of the IGFA will be fascinated by the pioneering photographs and unedited correspondence from the organization’s earliest days.” Such compelling personalities as IGFA founder Michael Lerner and long-time Vice President Ernest Hemingway are reviewed, and early angling hotspots such as Nova Scotia, Bimini, and Cabo Blanco, Peru are explored in rich detail. Other chapters look at the history of the IGFA’s rules of angling, how world records are set and lost, and the organization’s all-new Museum and Hall of Fame in Dania Beach, Florida. The book’s author is 49-year-old Mike Rivkin, a successful catalogue publisher widely known for his celebrated copywriting skills. Rivkin is also a veteran offshore angler, member of Catalina Island’s venerable Tuna Club, and an IGFA Representative; in short, a perfect choice to author this first-of-its-kind book. To maximize interest and ensure a rapid sell-through, the IGFA has limited its first edition printing to only 5,000 copies and is already accepting reservations for the first 900 (signed and numbered)volumes. An excerpt of the book appears in the 2005 edition of the IGFA’s World Record Game Fishes and a full-scale release is scheduled for August. For more details or to reserve your own numbered copy, visit the IGFA’s website at www.igfa.org or e-mail ccarey@igfa.org or call IGFA merchandise coordinator Crystal Carey at 954-924-4310. ### contacts: Mike Rivkin 858-625-0220 scmcorp@sbcglobal.net or Pete Johnson, IGFA PR counsel 480-951-3654 johnsoncom@aol.com |

35 top anglers registered for Rolex/IGFA Inshore Championship Pre-qualified in 2004 tournaments for July 10-13 light tackle world championship DANIA BEACH, Fla. ---More than 35 top fly and light tackle anglers have registered to compete in the world class fifth annual Rolex/IGFA Inshore Championship Tournament (ICT), July 10-13, in Islamorada, in the Florida Keys. The anglers gained entry via invitation to the world championship after winning one of 55 International Game Fish Association (IGFA) sanctioned qualifying events during 2004, representing over 2,600 anglers on four continents worldwide. The qualified winners are coming from12 states. Seven of the contestants are women champions. The Rolex/IGFA ICT features three days of fishing on both the Florida Bay and Atlantic Ocean sides of the Florida Keys. The targeted species for the championship are bonefish, tarpon, snook, redfish and permit in a catch-and-release format. "The point value of the fish is determined by the species and the angler’s choice of fly-fishing, using artificial lures or live bait,” said Rolex/IGFA tournament coordinator Denise Hartman. “Some may use one approach or all three over the three days.” The anglers participate in a captain’s draw on the opening evening matching a different guide and angler each day. “With many different fishing disciplines represented by the qualifying champions, this format levels the on-the-water ‘playing field,’” said tournament director Mike Myatt. “The rotating guide and angler format relieves the ‘home field’ advantage to a degree and lends itself to maximizing not only the angler’s strengths, but also the guide’s.” The Islander Resort is the tournament headquarters, with fishing and daily scorekeeping taking place from the World Wide Sportsman. Both are located near mile marker 82 in the Keys. The three days of competitive fishing will start Monday and end Wednesday. Lines are in at 7 a.m. and out at 3 p.m. each day. During the scoring each afternoon the contestants and guides will gather for appetizers and cocktails dockside at the World Wide Sportsman Marina provided by Bacardi, Zane Grey and the Islamorada Fish Company. Rolex timepieces will be awarded to the tournament’s grand champion and grand champion runner-up based on slams, and also to the overall release champion and runner-up release champion based on total points. The divisional champions -- first to third places -- in fly, spin and bait, plus the overall top three guides will also receive trophies and merchandise among the 16 tournament award categories presented. Jim Bokor, Tavernier, Fla., the 2002 Rolex/IGFA ICT Grand Champion is in the field for the fifth straight year. Like the Masters tournament in professional golf, past Rolex/IGFA ICT champions are invited perpetually, though Bokor also “qualified” by winning the 17th Mercury/Cheeca Redbone. Also returning after winning qualifying tournaments are Robert Collins, Naples, Fla., who was last year’s top overall release angler and Sharon Ellenwood, Tavernier, the runner-up grand champion. The ICT is one of three world class series events that include the sixth annual Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship Tournament which was held in May in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. In that tournament over 70 winning teams of anglers representing tournaments in 31 countries competed releasing a record 517 billfish (striped marlin and sailfish) around the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. Over 100 qualifying tournaments were held worldwide in 2004. A tournament for youngsters is also among the trio in the third annual Mercury Outboards/IGFA Junior Angler Championship in Key West, Fla., July 17-19. Rolex Watch U.S.A., respected world wide for producing the finest timepieces, became the title sponsor and exclusive timepiece of the ICT in 2000. Rolex is joined this year by platinum sponsors Chevrolet, Mercury Outboards and Hell’s Bay Boats. Other sponsors include Bacardi, Costa Del Mar, G. Loomis, Hook and Tackle, Image Graphics 2000, Islamorada Fish Co., Island Glass, Islander Resort, James Harris Fine Arts, Hewlett Photography, KD & G Sea Life Masterpieces, King Sailfish Mounts, Rapala, Redbone Gallery, Robert James Sales, Inc., Shimano, Stiffy Push Poles, 3M Scientific Anglers and World Wide Sportsman. James Harris of Delray Beach, Fla., is the official artist of the ICT for the fifth straight year. For further information, contact Denise Hartman at the International Game Fish Association, 300 Gulf Stream Way, Dania Beach, Florida 33004 Email: dhartman@igfa.org, Phone (954) 927-2628 Fax (954) 924-4299. Miami (USA) Mayor’s Cup team edges former champs from Bermuda to win sixth annual Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship Florida and Illinois anglers move from 7th to 1st; record numbers of billfish released CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO – In what was considered an insurmountable final day lead to overtake, four anglers from Miami, Fla. and the suburbs of Chicago, Ill., caught eight billfish and one tuna, to slip past a team of former champions from Bermuda to win the Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship Tournament (OCT). The points from the weight of the tuna would be the deciding difference in the win. The sixth annual world championship of blue water angling hosted 70 teams from 31 countries, the single largest contingent of international teams ever to compete in a fishing tournament. Teams had previously qualified by winning one of 110 International Game Fish Association (IGFA) qualifying events held in 35 countries worldwide during 2004. The teams fished on a different boat each of the four days, all guided by local Cabo San Lucas captains. Ray Rosher and his wife Charmain, Miami, teamed with Scott Segal, Libertyville, Ill., and Tom Schramm, Roselle, Ill., had fished consistently releasing nine striped marlin and two sailfish spread out over the first three rounds. Representing the Miami Beach Mayor’s Cup the team was in seventh place behind the first place 2003 Rolex/IGFA OCT champions of Bermuda after day three. “As we began fishing the final day, and with each catch, we really thought we had a chance to possibly get to second or third at best,” said Rosher, who captains a charter boat in Miami. “But first?” The 2003 champions from Bermuda had held the lead since day two with 12 billfish releases, 10 coming the second day replacing first day leaders from Trinidad & Tobago which had nine billfish releases at the midway point. Bobby Rego and Danny Fox, both of Hamilton, Bermuda, along with Buddy Sowers, Richmond, Va., and John Domanic, Los Cabos, Mexico, were only able to score two more marlin in the final round of fishing in the waters of the Baja Peninsula along Mexico’s Pacific coast. The former champions released 18 billfish collecting 300 points for their 17 marlin and 100 points for their single sailfish to total 5200 points. The major leap of eight billfish for the Miami/Chicago contingent gave that team a total of 19 billfish (16 marlin/three sailfish) for the week. They were also awarded 100 extra points as the team catching the most billfish in the tournament. The 42 lbs. from their only weight fish was the deciding factor as they finished with 5242.10 points. The tuna was the first catch of the day for them as they added billfish through the final hours. Charmain, who is pregnant with a boy, said they were amazed with the number of teams from around the world. “Despite language barriers between the anglers and the all local Mexican fleet of boat captains, many teams did well over one or more of the days of fishing. Ray Rosher added it was the first time in his 25 years in the sport he had ever fished for striped marlin. The team used both live and dead baits along with lures. Each member of the Miami/Chicago team won engraved Rolex timepieces along with a number of other trophies and prizes in the prestigious non-cash international event. The other contenders The Islamorada, Fla., Presidential Sailfish Tournament team held onto its third place position adding four marlin for a four day total of 4832.80 points. That team was made up of Daytona Beach/Deland, Fla., USA area residents, Edward Talton, brothers Robert and Ken Whitmarsh, Tyler Ford and brother and sister Rhett and Linnea Hagstrom. Fourth place went to a team representing the Presidential Challenge of CA-Guatemala with 4350.5 points. Anglers from central Fla., included Mike Wnek, Auburndale; Nick Ferraro, St. Petersburg; and Jim Turner, Vero Beach releasing five marlin in the final round. Finishing fifth was the team representing the Light Line & Fly Championship, in Los Cabos, Mexico at 4229.40. Anglers included Louis C., Louis J. and Jimmy C. Bevilacqua all of Manhasset, N.Y., and Grant Hartman, Cabo San Lucas also with five final day releases of marlin. The second place contenders faulted and blanked in the final day of action. The Greenville, N.C., USA trio of Bill Blount and his two sons Hunter and Gray, representing their win at the 64th ILTTA Tournament in Istapa, Guatemala, finished eighth with 3700 total points. First day leaders, representing the West Indies islands of Trinidad & Tobago and the Tobago Gamefishing Tournament, spiraled over the final three days to finish tied for 16th with 2800 points. Anglers and Captain’s standings In separate category standings the teams, anglers and boat captains were awarded 300 points for a qualified marlin release, 100 points for sailfish and weight fish. NEXT IGFA CERTIFIED OBSERVER TRAINING CLASS SET FOR JUNE AT IGFA HEADQUARTERS IN DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA DANIA BEACH, Fla.----The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) will hold its next IGFA Certified Observer Program at the IGFA headquarters in Dania Beach, Fla., to train and certify experienced anglers, boat captains and crew members as observers for fishing tournaments held around the world. The training class will be Saturday, June 25, 2005. The IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum, is located at 300 Gulf Stream Way, next to the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, off I-95 in Dania Beach. The full day training course includes a manual along with species ID video/CD and presentations by several experienced instructors. Potential IGFA observers are required to take a written exam (30-45 minutes) at the conclusion of the course. This program is a benefit to tournaments by eliminating or reducing rule disputes that sometimes arise. Certified observers can often prevent inadvertent rule infractions before they occur. A growing number of big money and catch & release tournaments have committed to using IGFA Certified Observers for their tournaments. The one day training program will begin at 9 a.m. with instructors covering the following topics: • Species Identification • IGFA Saltwater Fishing Rules & Regulations • Safety at Sea • Boating Etiquette Applications are available at the IGFA website www.igfa.org, Certified Observer Program and at the IGFA headquarters. The applications must be completed, mailed or faxed (954-924-4220) to IGFA accompanied with a $125 fee (payable to IGFA) not later than June 17, 2005. This fee covers the cost of the training class, course materials, and a one-year membership in the IGFA. Attendees will be notified of their certification by the IGFA within a week of the class. Should any candidate fail the exam, there will be future opportunities to retake the exam at no additional cost. For further information, please contact Lynda Wilson at IGFA, 954-924-4233 email: Lwilson@igfa.org.
