Visiting family in SoCal, my sister bought a new boat to fish in, apparently in San Clemente and Dana Point area, haven't really caught anything, In Carolina, I have my own boat, and no problem reaching my limit. Have the fish swam south?
Can you please advise for a better catch area?
Thanks.

This years early season saltwater fishery continues to impress most who venture out in our local waters. Many good sized salmon have again been taken in the waters in and around the south end of Denman and Hornby Islands. Lambert channel and the south end of Flora Isl. seem to be producing the majority of the action at the low slack tide. Our charters boats have hooked into some really aggressive fish on the outside of Flora , most heading straight to the bottom . These fish , when boated, all seem to be large white salmon. These fish generally show up year after year to feed on some nice size herring and provide some great early season action. The setup that is getting regular action again this year is a white flasher (glow both sides) and a silver prism 5” Coyote spoon tied behind a 5-6 ft leader or try the same spoon tied directly to your main line. When trolling outside of Flora (south end of Hornby Isl) try to cover the three main drop-offs heading south. (90,140,200 ft) . I usually pick up my gear after hitting the deep water , 250 ft + , on the south of Flora, then head back to the south end of Hornby and start my troll again. I always use scent on my spoons, hootchies AND flashers and this really seems to make the difference when the fish get fussy. Large schools of bait fish can be spotted around Whaling Station Bay and on the southern tip of Flora at most slack tides , so have some mooching set-ups (macdeeps, buzzbombs etc) ready to go on a couple of separate rods. Don’t forget to drop your prawn traps, as these tasty creatures are in good supply in our local waters !!!!………..see you on the water

Fishing Report for December 15, 2003

SALTWATER

Sooke – Salmon fishing was GOOD when the weather cooperated, which wasn’t often. Anglers were catching winter springs in the 8 to 12 lb range off of the Sooke Bluffs. However, there are still complaints about hooking and releasing lots of “shakers”. Fishing close to the bottom in 100 feet to 150 feet found the fish. Anglers were catching salmon on all types of gear, but anchovies are still the favorite bait. The Glow White or Glow Green teaser heads have been the best, but the new Rhys Davis Glow Pearl and Glow Mint Anchovy Specials that came out on the last week should also be killers. If you want to troll hootchies, the Radiant Mint Tulip or Army Truck would be the best choices. Spoons were also working well, especially those with Glow White/Green. Some we would recommend are the #4 Coyotes or #5 Gibbs Gators in Glow White/Green or the Tomic #632 Roadrunner.

Becher Bay - Salmon fishing was PRETTY GOOD again in East Sooke. Quite a lot of winter springs were caught during the weekend “Boozers” derby. The winning salmon weighed 12 ½ lbs. Most anglers started trolling in the bay and then towards the Bedfords and Church Rock and then back. The winter springs were ranging from 6– 12 lbs in size and have been in the 95 to 120 foot depths. Winter springs are now well inside the bay, so anglers can still get out and into fish on the marina side of Frazer Island. Anchovy remains the most popular bait for the springs, and the marina reported that the glow heads were the killers this past week. The new Rhys Davis Glow Pearl and Glow Mint Anchovy Specials that came out last week should be worth a try. If you want to troll artificial baits, try Glow White/Green #4 Coyotes or Glow White/Green #5 Gibbs Gators spoons, and for plastics, Radiant Mint Tulip and Army Truck hootchies have been working really well.

Pedder Bay – The fishing remains EXCELLENT and the marina reports that there are still lots of salmon in the bay. If the weather cooperates and you can get out, you will catch salmon. It’s also very good by Church Rock and Whirl Bay, when the weather permits, however the fishing in the bay near the can buoy has been so good that most anglers never ventured that far. The springs were running up to 14 lbs in size this past week and limits could be caught by fishing near the bottom in 100 to 130 feet of water. There have been loads of springs in the low teens. As usual, anchovies caught lots of salmon, especially when fished in Glow Anchovy Specials. The new Rhys Davis Glow Pearl and Glow Mint Anchovy Specials that came out last week should also be killers. However, we heard that the anglers fishing squirts were getting good action too. Good squirts/hootchies to use were the Radiant Mint Tulip, Army Truck, Jellyfish and Purple Haze. If you want to troll spoons, try Glow White/Green #4 Coyotes or Glow White/Green #5 Gibbs Gators spoons.

.
HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was SLOW over the week. Bad weather stopped anybody from trying for halibut. Extra Large Herring fished off of a spreader bar with a 2 lb weight is the best bet to catch the big flatfish although some anglers have been doing well on jigs such as the Mudraker or Lucky Jig.

Victoria Waterfront – No change from last week as salmon fishing was GOOD off of the waterfront when it wasn’t blowing up a storm. Anglers reported winter springs up to the mid teens being taken over the week. The fish are still being caught deep, at least 100 feet, and close to the bottom. You can’t go too wrong fishing the 20-fathom ledge all the way from Esquimalt to Trial Island. Brotchie Ledge and Clover Point have been the best spots though. You just have to put in some time until you run into a school of salmon. The salmon haven’t been too selective either, biting on bait, hootchies, and spoons. Anchovy is usually the most productive bait though, especially in Glow teaser heads. If you want to troll artificial baits, try Glow White/Green #4 Coyotes or Glow White/Green #5 Gibbs Gators spoons, and for plastics, use the Mint Tulip, Purple Haze or Army Truck patterns. Constance Bank was especially good for salmon, with bigger fish being caught there.

HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was SLOW. Bad weather was a problem most of the week. Most successful anglers in the coming week will be fishing in 200 to 280 foot depths with either Octopus or Extra Large Herring fished off of a spreader bar. Mudraker or Lucky Jigs also work well on the bank.

Oak Bay – Salmon fishing was GOOD when it wasn’t too windy. The flats are starting to come on strong for winter springs running into the teens. Fishing close to the bottom in 100 to 150 feet with squirts has been the ticket to success. The best patterns have been glow in the dark ones, such as the Army Truck. The Mint Tulip and Jellyfish will also work. Small anchovy and Tiny Strip have been the most productive natural baits, especially in Glow White teaser heads. If you want to troll spoons, try Glow White/Green #4 Coyotes or Glow White/Green #5 Gibbs Gators spoons. Troll about 10-20 feet off of the bottom for best results.

HALIBUT – Fishing was POOR this past week due to miserable weather. The most successful setup for halibut is Extra Large Herring fished off of a spreader bar with a 2 lb weight. Octopus tentacles and/or Power Bait also work well on halibut.

Sidney – Fishing was PICKING UP this past week. Anglers reported catching some winter springs from 9 to 11 lbs and the Powder Wharf was definitely the best place to fish. Most anglers were having success with small anchovy fished in glow teaser heads. You have to fish right on the bottom or you won’t have any luck. Glow White/Green Coyote or Gypsy spoons also work well in this area.

FRESHWATER

Stamp River - Still a few steelhead trickling in this past week. No big schools but differently a couple of fish swimming into the pools each day. There were some good days at the falls pool early this past week and then it declined rather quickly as the water cleared and the fish went back into the falls canyon. The upper river has a few fish spread from top to bottom. Not many from last weeks school yet. There are some shinny fish but no real fresh ones. The water should drop this whole week by the looks of the weather. Should be another decent week.

Cowichan River – Fishing was GOOD. The water level has fallen to 1.45 meters over the past week. It is still at a good level for drifting and some pools can be fished from shore. The coho fishing has slowed but a few coho can still be caught on Gibbs “Koho” spoons and Popsicle flies. Most anglers fishing for coho and early steelhead have been fishing the lower end from the Riverbottom section downstream to just below the Silver Bridge.

The top end has remained good for trout anglers. There are still salmon in the river and the trout are actively feeding on their eggs. If you are a fly angler, you should be using salmon egg patterns for rainbows and browns. The best technique is to fish just below a spawning pair of salmon with an egg fly. The trout hang just downstream from the fish and are feeding on salmon eggs that drift down from the spawners. All stretches of the river are holding fish, so take your pick on where to fish.

Local Lakes – Nothing new to report. Trout fishing is still GOOD in the local lakes, even though the water temperatures are dropping. Fly anglers can stay with the old reliable Black Leeches, Green Wooly Buggers and Damselfly nymphs trolled near the bottom and expect good action. Elk Lake continues to produce the biggest trout on average and 2106 catchables were recently stocked in the lake. Other recent stockings were 371 catchables in Langford Lake, 382 catchables in Prospect Lake and 1250 catchables in Glen Lake. At Elk Lake, shore anglers fishing Rainbow or Chartreuse Powerbait Nuggets have also been catching some nice trout off of the fishing pier and over by the highway. Langford Lake similarly is also producing nice sized trout. In Prospect Lake, Thetis Lake and Durrance Lake the trout have been smaller (10 to 14 inches) but have been producing more frequent action. Small spoons, Flatfish, or Kwikfish in frog patterns, are a good choice for trolling. Gang trolls and worms will almost always work if fished at the right depth too.

Bass Fishing has been SLOW. Most of the bass have now moved to deeper, warmer water for the winter. Fish large 4” tubes jigs, lizards, or jigs with pork rind, and try for suspended fish in deep water. Elk and St Mary’s Lake are your best bets for smallmouth bass now.

FISH TIPS OF THE WEEK

Many fly anglers put away their gear for the winter without properly storing expensive fly lines. Rather than leaving your line tightly wound onto the reel, it's best to remove the line and store it in larger loops off of the reel. And a good application of line cleaner certainly wouldn't hurt your line's performance.

Christmas is coming and the smart angler will make sure that they have filled out their “wish list card” at Island Outfitters. Help make it easy for others who want to get you a fishing or hunting gift at this time of year!
