Just talked to Deke and he said he will be there at 3 am. He has chovies and dines. Don't expect any SST/chloro shots before tomorrow. The elbow looked the best on the last good shots. |

Are we talking Virgs? No way! There's absolutely no logical reason behind declining temp live bait in Morro when all this would do is help get the ball rolling for a long awaited tuna season. Both sport and privates stand to gain from live so this makes no sense. Just wash the political crap aside and do what's right. |

Dumb question but down here guys fill in at times for one another. When boats break, others help out and fill in if possible. Would Deke (or whoever runs the bait boat) ever help out Virges and supply live will the BB is down? Just a thought |

Checked with Virges' today and no bait and no good estimate as to when the boat will be repaired. If you need bait, and I believe it is very important for albacore, then it will be neccesary to get it from DEKE at PSL. One good bait stop and it will be worth the extra 15 miles from Morro to get it. |

Weather; Sunday is looking good again along with monday and tuesday. Anybody thinking of going looking sunday ? I know of one boat that is going out of Morro that would like company to cover a wider area. I am hoping the wind will clear the fog away tonight so we can get a good color picture tomorrow afternoon. |

The sandspit at Montana de Oro is a good Perch spot. Pulled a couple of slabs out of there Wednesday. If you do not know where it is its pretty easy to explain. If you drive out to Montana de Oro wait till you pass a grove of eucs and you will see a paved road to your right. This is well before Montana de Oro beach. Follow the road to the parking lot. There is a nice trail that leads to the beach. It is probably about 1/4 mile. There are plenty of sandcrabs down there but they bite just as well on motor oil grubs. One thing to be careful for is to watch the trail closely. On my way back to my car on Wednesday a couple of surfers ran past me up the trail. I looked up ahead and noticed what looked like a belt or leash in the trail. They had just ran right over the top of where it lay. I thought they might have dropped something and called out for them. A few steps later is was clear that it was a snake. Not just any snake, but a 4 foot rattlesnake. I used my rod to move the snake off the trail, but needless to say that trail is right in the middle of their home and they will always be there. Good luck, and be careful. |

I got on the official DFG web site to find out exactly where this meeting is Tues and it said Beach Resort Monterey Alone/Cabrillo Meeting Rooms 2600 Dunes Drive Monterey. That is not complete. Here is the exact location for this meeting: Best Western Beach Resort 2600 Sand Dunes Drive Monterey Ca. I called to conferm the fish and game meeting is at this location and they said it was. The web site says the meeting starts at 10:00 a.m. I hope that time is more accurate than the location was. Good luck John |

Up date on Morro Bay MLPA meeting...It was a chance to speak and be heard..As long as you stayed on a specific point such as culture or economic concerns and you stayed on topic everyone got 5 min. It was a good chance to hear other concerned citizens speak and a chance to practice before Monterey...There were some great speakers who like me think this is going to get rammed down our throats..It might, but not without a fight...My wife and I both spoke about our concerns about 0ption P..My point was that their push for P did not fall under the umbrella of the DFG's Mission Statement and was to restrictive in regards to the use of the fishery...P is our enemy and we need to make them understand this is a death sentence to our coast our friends and our future..I can not stress enough going to Monterey Tuesday we have a chance but we have no chance if we don't fight...My grandchildren have not been born yet, as my wife said, if P passes their chance to fish is not possible. Great cultural point a entire generation that will not learn how to fish... Be there thanks and good luck, John |

Gang: Regarding the MLPA, yes we need folks to go to the meeting and speak out. But we need to be very clear with our comments. We still all support Package 1 without question, but Package P (the department's "preferred alternative") is what it is all about now. For those of you willing and able to go to Monterey next week (the meeting is on the 15th), contact us through this site, at the Morro Bay Harbor Dept. office (805-772-6254), or by my phone number below. We can get the specifics to you about what to speak up about and points to make. But bottom line is that WE NEED YOU THERE!! There will be carpool opportunities I'm sure, and a one-day round trip to Monterey is easy. Thanks folks. Eric Endersby 805-471-8314 |

While it may be true that you will not get to voice your opinion on MLPA's today in Morro Bay, lets not forget that there is strength in numbers. Those of us that financially support our local sportfishing businesses should also support them by going to the meeting and showing solidarity. Not to mention the fact that some people wont be able to make it to Monterey but would like to be a part of the process of protecting our right to fish. If you cant make it to Monterey, showing up today in Morro Bay is far better than staying at home thinking that your participation isnt needed and that this meeting doesnt matter. |

Friends: John Usilton's posting is slightly misleading. Please do not go to Vets Bldg in MB today thinking that you get to talk about what you think about MLPAs. That hearing is next Tuesday in Monterey. Today's hearing between 2-4 p.m. is a "scoping meeting" where CDFG will hear suggestions from the public about what factors should be included in a CEQA report(i.e. What should be the "scope" of the CEQA report). This is a form of environmental impact report that considers environmental and economic impact from the proposed new MPAs. So, the people who want to speak today should plan to suggest factors that will impact our community from an environmental and economic impact if MPAs are placed along our coast. So John Usilton might want to speak about economic impact to his commercial fishing business. The City of MB will certainly have someone there. MB harbor office should have representative there. Other commercial fishermen should be there to talk about economic impact. Darby from Virg's and Roger from Patriot Sportfishing should be there. Harold from Davis Boats should be there. The motel and restaurant owners should be there because of economic impact. How about fuel dock operators like DeGarimores, etc. Are you getting the picture here? But... if you want to go down there just to complain that you don't like MPAs .. don't waste your time. The key policy hearings will be in Monterey all day next Tuesday. Mel |

Sheryl Trego, Trolling for halibut definitely seems to be bringing some great results. I talked to some guys in the halibut tourney that came in with 4 big ones that caught them trolling at the coke plant just like Cloud? Anyways, most of the time you are probably trolling in a pretty sandy area, so even if you do tap the bottom, there shouldn't be too many snags. Just bump right along. Sure, I bet there are times when you get snagged, just have to watch your depth.

Friends: Big Red... I mean really big Red (Vermillion) Every once in a while I read in newspaper about Virg's or Patriot with jackpot winner with 7 or 8 pound "red" and I chuckle ... thinking that they have exaggerated by a pound or two ... probably. So, when I catch a 10 pound red (my biggest in 30 years in these waters) I suspect everyone will also chuckle ...yeah right! So I didn't clean the "toad" at the cleaning station ... I took it home and got my wife to take some pictures. They'll be up here on the web site soon ... and then I'll chuckle. See everyone next Tuesday up in Monterey. I hear that the anti-fishing enviros are going to really put on a show. Mel |

Michele; Have they got the bait boat repaired yet ? SST/weather; This morning's SST is is really a good one. Combined with the chlorophyll shot I think the best area is 34:50 and 121:50 which is about 58 nm out of Morro and a little closer out of PSL. Weather wise mon/tues is looking the best now with sunday probably ok. |

Mel de la Motte: If you listen, you can hear the faint sound of applause resounding over the waves all the way from the shores of New Zealand. Without the tireless efforts of you-and others like you-this ugly little war against bureaucracies with misguided agendas would be lost. It sounds like this is the defining moment for anyone who cares about the future of their individual freedoms on the sea to get in the game. |

Friends: Attached is the second letter directed to the Fish and Game Commission. I think that the August 15 meeting in Monterey will be important. The enviros seemed to get a sense that the Commission was leaning our way about certain helpful changes to the proposed reserves in our area ... and are likely to turn out in very large numbers. We need to be there in numbers to counter-balance them... I might even drag my boat up to Moss Landing and shoot out for some albacore on Monday ... and then suffer through the Commission hearings on Tuesday.
