I whole heartedly agree. Given the MPA $#!@%@#$^$@^ situation, we'll soon be fishing golf course ponds...but only on every 3rd Saturday with 0 fish bag limit(if DFG has it's way)

Hope you get the tuna!

Mike,
O.K., Maybe I misread the intention of your post, and I don't own a horse so it's dificult for me to get on one.

It's only a matter of time before no one is permitted to be on the water. Maybe we should all be out looking for tuna instead of using this board.

Had you read my post closely, you would have noticed that I was not blaming the commercial guys. I am happy they finally were able to make some money. So you can see: I AM BLAMING NMFS AND DFG. They allowed the guys to go over their quota. Gee, do you think that maybe they're trying to screw us next year? There were probably Klamath fish caught.

If you read how the management council does things, you will see that this could mean NO SEASON FOR ANYONE. With the current lack of disaster funding for our commercial guys, this means they could get doubly screwed next year, again. There will be little political cause to have a season next year as we won't be in an election year.

So, before you get all up on your horse, try reading posts before you attack.

FYI: I come from a family of commercial fisherman. We fish AK and WA. I know more about commercial fishing than most, so I know what I am talking about.

Just talked to Seeker who checked out the areas from below the 35 line up and out to the area where Skip caught those fish friday. NAda nada and nada. Good breaks, good temps, blue water but no fish. The weather even got good.

Also heard that Santa Cruz was wide open again today with scores of 25 fish ! Sounds like it is worth the tow up there.

Checked out both the 9/09 SST & old SST's/Clouro shots. Looks like the most promising water that's connected to the mass fueling tuna off Santa Cruz lies aprox. 65m west of MB at 35.30 and 122.10, above the Elbow. Hoping to fish tuna as soon as both work and weather permit.

Just talked with Randys' in Monterey. They're not sending any boats @ this time. The albacore are 85-90 miles out of Monterey. You'll have to venture further north to Santa Cruz, as Harrell posted, for the shorter trips.

Fished out of MB sat. for 3 short white seabass and one short salmon. All four fish were caught 80ft down the wire between 8:00-9:00am in 185ft of water in front of Toro Creek.I was fishing by myself,so I can't say that the fish had a preference for the green flasher/green hoochie combo, but that's what was in the water. There were 3-4 mega baitballs really close together and I was just trolling between them,,,The bite totally died at 9:00am and I couldn't buy a rockcod bite after that, even with the squid I scrounged from Sharon on the Harbor Pathfinder.Despite the weather report,it was greasy calm with little wind...If it lays down this week I would like to find a boat to buddy with out to look for albacore in that 30-35 mile area....jeff

We too have had sea lions approach us like this as well. Non-aggressive types. They were likley those dying animals rescued from the beach and placed in recovery programs with humans. They are like dogs and get use to humans. Word is they become sick from elevated bacterial levels leading to an infection. Farm and human run-off contribute.

FYI Mike,
good for the commercial trollers, it's about time they got some fish this year. They were given South of Pigeon for the month of May, and there were no fish. They reopened end of August. They got it in the shorts this year. Every pound of salmon they deliver is taxed for SALMON ENHANCEMENT. There would be no salmon fishery without the funding they provide. I say thanks to all the California trollers. Good goin'

We were in and around PSL in july, and on back to back days we had a seal on each day that what we thought was the same one playing with us! So we fired up and moved.

He would circle the boat jumping constantly. The first time he came from nowhere and hit the outboard trying to get in, I guess. I just about messed my pants. We had three guys in my 14 ft. Gregor so maybe he didnt have any room to get in?

Anyway reading your guys' story I am thinking Mr Whitey may have been nearby....

Jsut found out on another website that the commercial salmon fleet went 2 and 1/2 times over their quota in the recent Fort Bragg fishery. they were supposed to get 4000, but ended up with 10,000. Thanks DFG and NOAA for having the fishery on a holiday weekend, we all know you work so hard on holidays....this may impact us as in no salmon season next year...

Went out of PSL last Wednesday, we also had a seal experience.
We were near the pt.Buchon buoy when about 10 small seals came near the boat and they were all jumping around, one came in the outboard well on the starboard side and went out the portside, two others tried to come on the side but we were pushing them away with the net handle and a floor scrubber.
I don't know how to read seal, but they were either plying or the big seals on the buoy were picking on them or? there was a whitey around.
Other than that little episode we had a great day fishing, and the water was good. Jim

About ten years ago at Pt. Buchon a small CA sea lion crawled up on swim step of buddies 18' Center Console and would *not* get off. Comical watching buds poke at it with the net handle, it did that shuck/jive manuever with its neck and they couldnt even get close to making contact. It finally hopped off after boat took off, got to about 20 kts and about 1/4 mile away. Pretty obvious there was something down there the sea lion wanted no part of. The fishing bite had turned off like a light switch as well.

There have been whitey's 'round here for a long time, but now its seems one or more have taken up residence, or made this area a migration stop. You can bet I wont be calling the MMRC after an un-successful predation event. Its pretty well known that whiteys injure (usually fatally but sometimes not) their prey and come back later to eat. Injured sea lions should be left alone, Mr. Whitey gotta eat too, and they need all the help they can get. Let nature take it's course. "Boycott the MMRC" (Marine Mammal Rescue Center). Where can I get some Bumper Stickers made? Cloud out.

DAVE them wardens must have been in the xmas spirt already, normally you would get a ticket, mater of fact I heard at the cleaning rack last week some warden gave a person a ticket for having a bucket loat of FISH CARCASSES, because he did not have a licence, dont know if its true or not, so if it is, now DFG is in charge of DUMPSTER DIVING, what do you think MEL would that stand up in a court of LAW?

Ron,
5 weeks ago a seal boarded a 12 aluminum @ Luffingwell. Dang thing was scarred sh*tless and had teeth marks along it's side. The fisherman couldn't get it out of his boat. He came ashore and had to unload his boat so he could turn it upside down to get the seal out. Then a seal rescue team was called and they came and took it away.
Long story short... It happend(s) Just not very often. And whales have been known to breach on fishing boats too ! Ya just can't be too careful out there. We're in other creatures element.

Thanks to all who filled me in on the cleaning station being used for cleaning southern Cal & Mexican caught fish. Amazing...
Stacey,
You're welcome to come along any time, any where. I got 1st hand info. from experienced fishermen on Mill Creek and 2 other spots. (John & Michele @ Virges & Stacey) Unfortunately, I won't/can't go it alone. (carring the boat across the rocks) My regular fishing partner has a bad back and my back-up partner is 72. We had to settle for fishing out of Luffingwell on Friday. Just one other fisherman (A Kayak) launched. There were 3 other sport boats that came up from Morro. Ocean was like a lake. And wouldn't you know it...The fish wouldn't cooperate. By 11 am we only had 4 fish in the boat. Then came the big surprize... We got boarded by DFG.(Just out doing their job)riding along in the harbor patrol inflatable. My pard had 2 cabs in his possession and luckily DFG let him off with a warning. Me, I had forgotten/left my license on shore. So DFG confiscated my gear as collateral while I went in to reterive it. I also received a warning. (Of which I'm very grateful for) It could have easily gone the other direction had I opened my usual big mouth. Sometimes we all need a little wake-up call... And I've had mine. I've since added my license to the #1 spot on my 'remember to have checklist' Gettin' old sucks and I'm running out of memory. I pray we're able to continue fishing, it's the only thing I truly enjoy.

Exciting day aboard the "Hook up". Capitan Larry (AKA Dad) had a visitor on board and it was'nt the Fish and Game. A 6 to 7 foot seal jumped in the boat!!! Has any one else had a similar experence? Dad's never heard of this in his many, many, many (hahahha) years of fishing on the Central Coast. One time we had one look like he wanted to get in. Must of seen a "WHITEY". No injuries other maybe a few kick marks on the poor thing (he jumped out as quickly as he jumped in). So if anyone sees a seal out of PSL with a few teeth missing, you'll know why.

It was a nice day to fish out of PSL. We fished till 3:30, gave salmon a try for 3hrs. this a.m. with no luck, although we were metering lots of fish, no bait balls. We heard of a 31 lb. halibut caught at the coke plant, and a halibut caught at the pea patch, but we bounced balled out front for near limits of nice bolina and a ling cod, none of our target of halibut. Good Karma were you the one on the radio of of morro with two in the box? We heard all your white sea bass, they just needed to grow a little it sounds like. Anyway all in all a fine day on the water. We'll be back out next weekend. Good fishing to all.

Weather;
Checked all the forecasts, graphics and computer models this morning and don't have any guess as to when we might have a really nice day to chase albacore. None of the forecasts lately have been been any good. It was not forecast yesterday to be 5kts all day but it was ! John (PGE) thinks we could have offshore conditions the 16th/17th. Tuesday wednesday look the best on the forecast now. With albacore at 37 miles might be best to just pick a calm morning and go !

Fished PSL in the mini-Avocation today. Fished from 7-3 pm for 1 dink halibut. Did get a 4.5' leopard on our last drift. We were hoping for a monster hali...ohwell, it sure pulled hard! I guess the reel and drop method didn't work for the halis. Some folks were saying that the S swell puts them off the bite. Not sure what was up,but it was slow!!!
The ocean was nice today. A little lumpy, but very comfortable. Not much wind when we left at 3pm.
good luck to those that go this weekend.

steve

OK all you fisherpeople! Salmon Enhancement is having another great event coming up on November 4: A Taste of Salmon. This is a fun fundraiser that includes salmon prepared by many local restaurants, wine, beer, and an auction. IT IS ALWAYS A HOOT. We need your support at the dinner, as a sponsor, or if you have any auction items to donate. All the proceeds go to raise more salmon for you to catch.
Call the CCSE office at 473-8221 for tickets of info.
We are doing all of this for you, so please help us out.

barred surf perch are eagerly eating small grubs in front of Morro Strand, just about anywhere along there. I have had several good trips there this summer and limit every time within about 90 minutes no problem! I am new to this site, however I have enjoyed some of the stories and pointers the last couple of days.

I'm still missin' it. They brought the fish back up to the local fish cleaning station from Guadalupe Island ? I hardly think that's how it was. But it's what I got from reading the post.
We're headed up to Mill Creek in the morning. Will post results upon our return.

John Perry....

If I might borrow a Yogi-ism, "It's Deja-vu all over again!"

Where have we seen those arguments before?

The guys down south of us are shaking in their boots because they now know they are next in line for the proverbial "bend-over" like we just received. Now, by your post, it appears the right-coast is in for the same medicine.

You have to hand it to those Preservationists (in my book, they're not conservationists as they say), they'll take it all away from right under our noses one tiny piece at a time. It's just a shame that we all couldn't have fought this together. The vast majority of the guys I communicate with down south had no idea what was happening to us here and further north with the MPA process.

They're feeling it now.

And the loss of fishing grounds continue:

Fish Havens Pit Fishermen Vs. Activists
By Associated Press

Wed Sep 6, 12:01 AM

CHARLESTON, S.C. - A plan to create fish refuges off the South Carolina coast sparked a clash between fishermen and conservationists.

More than 30 fishermen and environmentalists attended a public hearing Tuesday to discuss the plan by the National Marine Fisheries Service.

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council proposal would ban fishing for snapper and grouper, in effect bottom-fishing, along the three reefs offshore. The reefs are as large as 50 square miles, as deep as 600 feet and 50 miles out to sea.

Snapper and grouper are popular seafood and among the most heavily fished species in the Southeast.

The three sites off the South Carolina coast are among eight proposed in the Southeast. The council is expected to vote on establishing the refuges in December and the regulation could become law by 2008.

"The South Atlantic council ploy is to basically put the fisherman out of business. And it's working," said commercial fisherman Harold Olsen.

Protected areas don't work and "I haven't seen any studies that they work. We just don't know with these deep water species, and y'all have admitted that," added recreational fisherman Marcus Harold of Mount Pleasant.

But Nancy Vinson of the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League favored creating the refuges.

"There's lots of ocean out there and these are three relatively small sites that may help preserve these fish being overfished," she said.

While conservationists say fish populations are in trouble, some fishermen say there needs to be more research.

"Over the years, we've tried every single other traditional fishing management tool and none of those has protected the snapper-grouper species," said Kerry O'Malley, a council biologist.

Fished PSL in the mini-Avocation today. Got a nice 1/4 scoop of mixed dines and chovies. Headed up to the Pea Patch and, after a slow start, put two halis in the boat by 11 a.m., landed 1 dink and had two other raked baits. The keepers were 24 and 30". There were caught in 45-50' of water.
A couple of interesting observations the last few weeks and this year. First, it seems like the fish are deeper this year. Last year we caught several fish in the 20-40' range, this year most fish have been in the 40-60' range. In addition, we have been getting most of our bites when initially dropping our bait down. Both keepers today, and a few last week came as soon as our bait hit the bottom. I wonder if there is something to that...for it seems strange that you could drag bottom for hours and then catch two fish while dropping your bait! Mmm.... maybe a new technique?!?
Seems like the hali fishing is picking up. I'll be out there again on Friday.
best fishes,
steve

This report was on USA Fishing. Also albacore were caught Sunday and Monday. I heard a report of fish caught near the Cape San Martin buoy which is about 60 miles out of Morro Bay but no details yet. We may still get a shot if the weather will give us a break. Fri, Sat and Sunday look good on the latest forecast.

On Friday 9-1 the New Captain Pete both reported limits of rockfish and great weather fishing the local reefs off San G and Pesadaro.
Albacore: On the tuna front boats from Santa Cruz to the Golden Gate all converged on the area NW of the Guide. This is a 65 mile plus run for the GG and Cruz fleet and about 10 miles closer for those running out of Half Moon Bay. Craig Stone at Emeryville Sport Fishing reported the New Salmon Queen ran southwest of the Gate and boated 60 albacore to 25-pounds with a 20-pound bluefin. Their best numbers were from 37. 10 to 37.15 and 123 35 to 123.39. They got many on the troll but some bait stops were very productive. This is the top party boat score for a bay area boat so far this season Their next open trip scheduled is for on Wednesday. Private boats running out of Half Moon Bay reported scores of 7 to 22 fish working from 37.10 to 37.15 and from 123. 15 to 123.38 with the best scores being on the more westerly side of 123.24 to .38. Out of Santa Cruz Tom who runs the six-pack FishOn reported 9 fish 12 to 22 pounds with all caught trolling in the area if 37. 12 and 123.34. He said they didn't have a fish in the box until the afternoon when he finally got his customers to switch over to his "gear". Mex flags and zucchini clones is what they bit best. The weather was flat and foggy. Tom has room daily this week and charters a group of 4 for $250 per person and his a great six pack operation.

Fished out of MB this morning from 6am till noon, ran south to buchon but it was too bumpy, dinked on back to MB with some success, released 5 short lings, one big canary #3 lots of small gophers and blues. Kept one ling, three reds and a few big blues and two big gophers and a nice (jonny/sand) bass
As far as oil slicks go I'd be horrified. But we could use a few more underwater stuctures out there, especialy if fishing is banned forever in the only places that make sense to fish.
I wonder how you get one of those mothballed liberty ships sunk?
