Josh,
you might rethink of going Sat. right now the Monterey bouy is 10.8 ft. every 11 seconds. They predict it to come down Sunday. But i dont want to discourage you from going, just letting you know, its howling now

I have a men's group church charter on the Patriot this Saturday (9/23) heading to Purisma (weather permitting). We are short a couple of rods. If anyone feels like taking a trip down there to pull on some toothy critters it would be $68. Should be a pretty light load (around 25). Shoot me an email at markk@hughes.net if you are interested...

I'm also planning on a run north for tuna. Probably lanuching out of Monterey. I've been keeping a watch on all the forcasts and bouy's and Saturday may be questionable but Sunday and Monday look good. What are you guys looking at? Sure feel the need to pull on something! I'm tired of these "dry" runs. Thanks, Greg

Josh,
We're looking toward Sunday eve. and fishing on Mon. Anything before then the weather is looking too windy & swells too close together. It may be fishable but it'll be rough.

Rick

There appears to be a hard break from about 122'50 -123'10 & running from 34'00 to 35'00. I have never been out that far so I have no idea if will be holding fish, but it looks good on paper.

Fish Trap style lures are the best shot without bait but unless they are on the surface and feeding hard...

Hello fish addicts and old friends: The sailing vessel Emerald is in San Diego out of New Zealand and we'll be sailing her up the coast to Morro Bay homewaters in about ten days. We'll stand out to sea between 50 and 100 miles for a number of days and sure could use some guidance from you gurus out there concerning where to troll for some LFT or YFT. Sadly, sailboats don't have bait tanks. But, we're durable and can stay on site for days if anyone can venture a guess where to try our luck trolling as well as to recommend vertical technique lures to try on metered marks in lieu of live bait. The elbow and the donut come to mind as reliable providors from the old days, but we can check out other possibilities between Cortez Bank and Morro Bay. Any ideas? Thanks much>Rick

Salmon at PSL! At least for Bret on the Fincutter. Way to go you are the salmon king today. He had 4 comnmercial salmon in the box when we left at 1:30, We heard his earlier released fish and joined him out trolling. He shared his information and we had a couple of shakers, but the luck was his today. Big swell but fishable. Now back to work.

Just got back from Santa Cruz. Left the house at 2:30 and didn't get the boat in the water until 6:30. Picked up a scoop of the dinkiest pinners I've seen in a long time and set a course for the 36'46/122'34 which was one of the spots from yesterday. Could only make about 15 MPH because the slop was right on our nose. Our "buddy boat" Real Entry, lost a belt and had to can it. We would have pulled the plug if it had not have been such a commitment to get up North in the first place. It was a 33 mile run so we did not have a wet line until about 8:30.

The first fish bit a black and purple jet head about 8:32 and was a cow. Got him to the boat on Ratzolff's old rig, he made a run and came undone. Was over 30lbs easy. For the next few hours it was a fish every half hour or so. We boated one double the rest were singles. Black and purple in the morning and Zukini in the afternoon. Called it with 9 in the box only 1 under 20lbs. No more farmed fish and never left the area we started.

It sure was nice to see bloody decks!

Weather was the worst I've ever fished. It was the kind of day where the beer just sits there because you know you have to stay sharp. Huge wind waves, white caps everywhere, wash tub mixed up bounce and lots of wind.

It was a great trip well worth it since the tuna has mostly avoided us for the last couple years. Thanks to Sal, Carlos and of course Captain Squatter Scott for sticking it out.

not a bad place for either species. Just have plenty of chum and a good combo of bait, better off with mackerel mostly, but squid will work if you chum them in. Watch out for whitey, and tight lines to ya!

Went up to Moss Landing Friday night with Bill, his son Tim and another friend Vince; on Tim's boat the Reel Busy. Slept in the parking lot. Left early morning and would have made it earlier but two of the crew would have mutinied if they didn't get coffee. Headed up to numbers posted earlier in the week about 45 miles out. Not bad seas but sure not the weather window we were hoping for. Started trolling and trolled for several hours without a bite. Again two of the crew was sick but we were tuna fishing. Heard of a bite farther south and headed toward it and around noon caught our first fish 30 lbs. on a zucchini. Tried to get a bait stop going but for 2 of us it was the first time trying bait and it got a little wild. Started up again and about another hour, fish on! This time we had stuff ready and kept that fish hanging while putting bait out and they were all around us. Everything started to go in slow motion and we couldn't even keep up. The weather was a huge factor with the rocking and rolling. We kept that bite going for about 45 minutes and lost more than we kept but we were fishing! Now we had 5 fish in the boat and one member had to sit out for a while. You know what it's like when you're feeling sick and you get hot from fighting fish. He was using a flipping stick and small saltwater quantum reel. I thought he'd never get the fish in but it all held up real good. Time to head back in and it's quite a bit rougher than when we headed out. Three of us hunkered down in the back of the 24ft open console and ate saltwater all the way back. There wasn't a dry place on our bodies. We all were mighty happy to see the bay and after we got in we cleaned up a little bit and put on dry clothing, ate dinner and passed out back in the parking lot. We ended up with 5 nice fish, 2 on the troll and 3 bait, stories that we'll tell all winter about each other, and good memories of friends fishing and sharing in one of life’s great pleasures. My conclusion of the weekend: I've got to get a bigger boat!

Running out time so we decided to go for it on Fri the 15th.Left Lemoore at 6.30 Fri night got to Moss at 10.00 bedded down in the parking lot.Sat morning Myself Tim and 2 desperate Tuna fishermen Vince Davis Steve Bengston headed for the tuna grounds.Done our home work and decided the wind and seas were on the way down,wrong.3hrs later we made it to the 38 line and worked it north to south.Found the fish at 3.00 at around the 40 line.Fish came on the outriggers using jigs.We had one good bait stop that lasted for about 45 min.until we tangled and broke off sending the school down.It took one guy at the wheel trying to hold her into the wind while 3 fished and tried to stay in the boat.Headed for Moss at 4.30 most miserable boat ride I have ever taken,no doubt I saw Elvis twice. Looked on the buoy later 25knts 6 1/2 waves 3 1/2 second apart.Lots of fish pick a good day and go for it.I remember my famous words to my wife when we bought this center console real men don't need cuddy cabins.

We too gave it a shot this morning. Very crossed up ocean with the offshore wind and NW swell. Fishable, just not pleasant. We went for the inside of that comma-shaped break. Headed straight out until we hit the 121.00 line, then trolled south along the break to the area of the old weather buoy. 60-62.9 degree water on the warm side, 58.5-59 on the cold. Clean all the way down but no life until we got within about 1/2 mile of where the buoy used to be. Found big bait balls with lots of birds crashing, porpoise, and seal lions. Trolled for about an hour and a half all around the area for nothing. Called it a day and went inside Buchon for some nice rockfish before the NW wind came up.

Good luck tomorrow.

Eric

Launched this morning out of Morro about 5 am. Had great bait from Billy Boy. Went out to the north side of the break at about 14 miles and put in the gear. Looked real fishy. Water fairly clean, 63 degrees, a few birds, porpoise, and whales. Proceeded to head out on the 15 line all the way out to 121 35. NADA! Good looking water all the way out, just not much life. Except for what we saw at 14 miles, no birds, no bait, no fish,NADA! Wes, John and anyone else going out tomorrow may want to try the outside break as there didn't seem to be anything inside 40 miles. By the way the water was very nice today, very fishable. Good luck in the hunt! Greg

We are launching about 5:00am in Morro Bay. We are going to work the top of this break which I have indicated with a blue line. The more coverage the better! I know of 3 boats that will be looking.

It was a little tempting to run to Santa Cruz, the reports out of there are great! I'm sure hoping we can find them, the decks have been white WAY TOO LONG!!!!!

Heading up the freeway this morning all the trees and flags were blowing all the way to PSL. Once in the parking lot it seemed like maybe we can get a day in fishing after all. It was very fishable at the pea patch and trolling back in. Short lings, bolins, blue, but no halibut was the story on the fishing. We fished till 1:00 and called it a day, it was worth the trip after all. Good Luck to all.

Slipped out of morro bay harbor this morning for a shot at the rockfish and halibut...It was nasty, with a big (30+mph) santa ana blowing offshore and an uneven swell moving onshore (whitecaps at 9:00am).No fun..I was planning to look for albies a tomorrow, but I'm having second thoughts unless there is a drastic improvement later today.....Virg`s had good bait today with a mix of 'dines and 'chovies....Wes, if you are still planing to fish tomorrow, call me at home tonight...jeff

This morning's SST looks almost as good as last evening and this was with a lot of wind and night
conditions. If this plume is not holding fish it should be !
Patriot will be running a boat Mon,tues and wed night fishing tues, wed and thursday.
The buoys have already started dropping so tomorrow should be ok.
Matt has great bait at Morro.

Harrell, lookig at the Terafin picture reminded me a an old friend who once caught albacore off the Kings Harbor break water in Redondo Beach with his surf rod. A few years back when we caught the 79 pounder we were only three miles off Buchon. I think I will put the lines in early on my way out next week.

SST/Chlorophyll/Weather:

I hae been watching the SST for almost ten years now and I have never seen an image like the one posted on Terrafin last evening (6:13 PM) ! We have clean blue 61 degree water on the beach at Buchon. There is a 3-4 degree hard break that runs from 5 miles off the rock into the elbow, 50 + miles and a connected 61/62 degree plume 25 miles wide that runs from Morro Bay to Pt. Arguello. The chlorophyll shot shows this plume to be as as clean as any water out there. Of course the big question - is it holding albacore ??
Well, if the forecast models hold true we will have from monday to friday to check it out. Maybe even sunday.

The wind has cleared the marine layer out so we should get good shots of both temp and chlorophyll this afternoon.
The ocean is upside down with swell as high as 10ft at 7 sec and 25 kts today.
The forecast models show monday as good in our area and not so good for Monterey but as we know it is all subject to change.
