The new SSTs look real good to me. Warm water is moving in close. Thinking of a Saturday run, as the weather looks good then. Any comments from the hard core crew? Will |

For those wondering about the PSL buoy area; A boat checked it out yesterday for nada. The water is off color but not bad. Yesterday's chlorophyll shows clean water where ever the temp is 62 degrees. Pacific Horizon picked up 29 yesterday but don't know how far. Two boats are out there today, one from Patriot and one from Virges. |

Short rpt. Fished Morro for a total of 21 albacore. We had one bait stop for 8 of the nicer grade. Area: 45 to 75-miles from Morro on a 240 to 250 heading. Lots of bait in a few zones holding fish down 60 to 150 feet that didn't want to go 4 us but did for Strike Time using cut dines as chunk while fishing live dines with lead and flyline. Good job guys. Water Temps: 61.5 to 64.2. Grease calm with 80-mile vis, blue whales, rain, rainbow, green flash, plus the fine company to the likes of Stu on Greylight, Tim on Tailchaser, Jim on Seeker, Dave on My Three Sons, John & Son on Taurus, Mark on Miss Mackey, Tom and Skip on Bushwhacker, Paul L., crew on Strike Time, and John and Dustin on the big sports. Todd Weaver, Craig Murray, and Kenny. Thanks for the effort guys. Fish were at 71 miles on Monday. My guess is a new batch will filter come in from the 1908 or Rod. Lower edge of Donut may be worthy of a check. Fresh albie is a cracklin on the grill.

A few thoughts about fuel: 1. Yes, the Coasties will come get you, but if you are DIW (dead in the water) in bad windy or swelly conditions this will be a life-threatening (not just embarrassing) situation. 2. 1/3 out, 1/3 back, 1/6 fishing, 1/6 in reserve. Pilots ALWAYS keep enough fuel aboard for an alternate airport, you should too. Don't cut it to the wire, especially since the closer you get to shore the more dangerous the situation will be if you go DIW. 3. Last Friday we burned 45 or so gallons heading out in moderately snotty conditions, but only burned 35 or so on the way home downhill. Lesson: even though you are generally going slower into the slop, you are burning more fuel because you are pushing into it, and are on and off the throttle to keep the ride manageable. You can liken it to highway and city driving mileage in a car. Also, consider your load. When we started back we had burned in the neighborhood of 55 gallons already. That's 385 pounds (7 pounds per gallon for gasoline). But we also took on 14 fish at about 15 pounds average to total 210 pounds. Not a heck of giant difference. If we had caught more fish like some other guys out that day, we might have headed in with more weight than we started with. For instance my boat partner got 31 fish two days prior and was no doubt heavier heading in than out despite the fuel burn because they didn't have to hunt much for the school and the bite came on strong. Bottom lines: 1. Don't count on an "average" fuel burn for all conditions. Run some tests and work it out. Then write it down. 2. Like someone posted, invest in a FloScan meter. They are gold, and easy to install. 3. Keep tabs on your electronic totalizer 9or fuel gauge) along the way and take periodic notes for the day when the electronic part goes on the fritz and you don't know what you burned. Don't guess, it could mean your life. Eric Endersby Morro Bay Harbor Patrol |

Well we ended up with 7 tuna today at 68NM on a 240. Long boat ride but great weather. four peanuts and three 15-18 lbs. Saw that break at appox 37 miles and wondered if we were running past the fish but continued to the 05/14 area. Fishing turned on about 11 to 1 for us and then shut down. Hope the water moves in again. I saw more humpback whales today than I ever have. About 9-10 miles out we ran into a group of prob 10-15 of them. Had to slow and change course to avoid them. Good thing there was enough light to see. Saw whales all day long. Thanks to all for sharing numbers on the water. Also heard two different boats that became disabled on the water and were being towed by the CG. Good fishing to all. |

The new Honda 150 on 22' Glastron is getting ~4mpg. Several trips to SD and the islands this summer still astound me. the boat was previously equipt w/80 gal tank & that puts us at 280 comfort range w/5gal spare that I have tried to tap into intentionally. My jobs and the LFT proximal runs have been so far, inversely timed--Dam. Thanx for all the informative chatter guys, youve been getting me ampt. Cam |

I was thinking of taking advantage of this great weather and fishing for albies tomorrow but today's fish were small, 6 to 12 pounders and about 65 mi out at 05 and 05. So I'll wait for some bigger fish to show up. The new satilite image looks like there is a sharp 61 degree break at about 35 mi out and running up to the Cape San Martin Buoy. Matt was making an other try for bait this evening. Bob |

Thanks for the fuel consumption input. My boat has a chevy 350 i/o with a mercruiser outdrive, pushing a 23ft bayliner.Historically,I've averaged 2-2.5 mi/gal,so I figured a safe max roundtrip on sunday of 140mi with a reserve of 20 gallons. If my gauge is correct, my actual fuel consumption was higher than .50 gallon per mile.Clearly,I burn a lot more fuel trolling albies at 6.5kts,than salmon at 3.0 kts...Well,live and learn....jeff |

Way too many stories about short fuel boats. A couple of thoughts..... 1 Buddy Boat, and be of such a size that you can help each other. Remember that as contitions take a dive, your fuel burn will go way up. I still fondly remember a sunday afternoon that I took a boat in tow above Cape San Martin bouy, by Ragged Point I knew we were in trouble. Too many miles...to few gallons...we were looking for a good place to anchor and wait for the coast guard. Fate smiled on us as my good friend Harold Davis pulled along side and transfered about 30 gallons to our tank. Buddy Boat, Harold was big enough to help, had the fuel, and had a great transfer pump. Bad situtation became a great memory. Then and there I bought a flowscan, It is usually accurate within 1 gal on a 100 gal fillup. Be safe and don't take chances. Jim Happy Hooker II |

I was a little concerned with my fuel calculation too, fairly new (to me) boat, so I was very consevative, ended up with 15 gal, burned 85 trolled four hours, don't think I'd be comfortable at 60 miles. Hope they get closer! |

The coast guard will not charge they will normally just pull you back to port with a GOOD ASS CHEWIN. Glad you guys got them fish if we ever get our boat back we may have time to get them, sucks to have a new boat and have the problems, thats the reason we bought a NEW boat. Oh well SH-- happens, looks like there is some weather coming so above all be careful, aint no fish worth that much. Blackie/Sr KILLER Bs |

WOW!!! That's cuttin' it close! LOL!! Fuel burn was the reason I pulled off at 12:30 on Friday. I wasn't 100% satisfied with the fuel burn data I had during troll so I played it safe and ran home with 11 fish in the box. I burned 78 gallons for 110 miles so it turns out we had a good supply (43 gallons) on return. I have confidence in the data now so next time we can loiter for a lot longer. Anyone know what the Coast Guard charges per gallon now....$700....$1000? LOL! |

Hey Jeff, We were out last week. Started out with 83 gal.'s. We got back to the dock with 1.3 gal.'s left. I think we sweated more than the 83 gals of fuel on gettin' back. Will never make that mistake again. |

Sadly,we were not one of the catching boats yesterday...unless you count the bonita. We put a total of 140 miles on the boat but did`nt have quite enough gas and time to get to the bite which you all know was 60+miles out on a 240 from MB.I`m glad we decided to turn around at 58 miles(7 miles short of where the Admiral was fishing),as even with 80gals in the tank plus a 10gal reseve container we just made it back to MB with no more than 5 gals left.I won`t make that error again...jeff |

Sitting here in Buelltown at 11:44PM with a busted wheel on my trailer. We did get Albies and giant bonita today mostly around "04/06". I love the way you fellows share information and how just about everybody respects your space out on the water. If you ever break down in Buelltown just call Brian at (805) 570-8536. One bait fish only because most of our bait rolled going out which was pretty sloppy, but out in the zone it was like the proverbial lake. Thanks Philip |

Friends: Looks like the school of fish we were chasing earlier in the week have moved ... north, south, or further out .... but certainly are not at the honey-hole any more. I was at the launch ramp tonight and talked to 12 boats. Only two of the boats got any fish. The rest got skunked ... and all fished closer to home. John Rowley on the Admiral went further out and apparently got 13 fish for a boatload of passengers... However, he reports that a boat from Moss Landing was fishing nearby and got 40 LFT. That boat fished until dark. John says the bite turned-on after he left the area (which was 65 miles out of MB). I think he left the fishing grounds around 2 p.m. Tomorrow I will decide if I am running out the 65-70 miles to chase these critters or heading up to Cape San Martin to get some monster lings and reds .... If I go for the albacore, I hear the best bite was at 122-05 / 35-05. I will be chattering on 19 and 68 tomorrow with boat name of "The Spirit." Also, there may be a problem with bait tomorrow in MB. They are going out tonight looking for bait. They only have enough right now to supply Virg's boats. Hope they find some good 'dines tonight. Mel |

We got skunked today too. Landed two bonito. We did have a double jig strike that we thought were albies...one broke off due to a tight drag and the other came unbottoned after a short battle. We went 50 today. Started at 14 and 44 and worked down to 6 and 50. Heard of some fish being caught at 06 and 03, but that was too far for us. Snotty in the morning, but laid down and was glassy by 2 pm. I hope they come in again!!! best fishes, steve |

Sunday albacore report: Like Chip said the fish are being caught farther out today. Small fish mostly and outside of the 122 line with no big counts. The weather calmed down nicely and should be good for a long run tomorrow. Probably a different school out there because they were smaller fish. May still be some bigger fish a little closer. |
