Whatever you want to as long as its from shore.
You just cant catch groundfish which are defined in the DFG regs.
But if you are on shore you can catch them, DUH makes a lot of sense huh.
Just go slaughter them big ole perch in the surf you can have ten a day and they are fun on light tackle .

This is from the Baysidemarinesc.com site: Oct. 29
The Albacore fishing has picked up for some of the anglers fishing closer to Santa Cruz today. The scores ranged from 5-17 Albacore a boat in calm seas. The best area was from 36'26/122'17 to 36'23/122'11. The anglers who fished further down the coast had a harder time locating fish at 36'16/122'16.

Went out yesterday for a last hurrah and scored on a 27" Butt, two barely legal Lings, and 1/2 limits for the 3 of us. Fished from 10:30 till 2:30. Very bumpy out of PSL with the wind really kicking up in the early afternoon. Peapatch area was fished in two long drifts. Does anyone know why exactly some lingcod meat is blue? I read on the net that male greenlings have blue meat.

Not a tuna report but, went rockfishing at Rosa yesterday and heard a boat on the radio ( might have been the "Onieda B" talking about a great temp break and water color but no fish. Don't have the numbers handy but when I heard them they were about 50 miles or so north and west of my position at Rosa. They spoke of great water and lots of bait, birds, etc. Bummer they found no fish. May have to watch for a window to pull to Monterey for one last tuna run if conditions hold. Rockfishing was good and the weather was great.

Way to go Mike!! I saw Stuart's post yesterday and got all fired up. I might run run up there Thurs. if the weather looks good. How come you ran up from Morro? Bait? That's a long run my friend.

I need to call you. How much do you know about the Cortez Bank? It's either the Cortez or Monterey next week. I guess I'm feeling the need to burn some fuel.

Talk to you soon,

Just in from an extended albacore trip from Morro Bay. Spent the night about 5 clicks below Point Sur Thursday night. Gorgeous.

We fished the Big Sur Coastline on Friday for
20 albacore for 2 anglers. All our fish were nicer grade with some pushing 30-lbs. Our entire catch came from a single bait stop lasting 2-hrs. After this stop we left the area and bent it for home while I cut fish. Kathy is new to fishing and has never fished for tuna before so it was straight "hook and hand". We had 1 to 4 fish going at all times. Guessing 3 hot sticks from this stop would have had us knee-deep in tuna. Numbers were 36.19 and 122.15. Notes: We dragged the feathers all the way down from the above numbers to just above and inside the Cape San Martin Buoy at 35.52 and 122.00 line for zilch. No life but good water up to 63-degrees. Good news is we found a massive amount of life over a 5-mile spread with feeding humpbacks, seals, birds, krill, and 2 seperate spots with "confirmed jumpers" 37-miles from the Rock. Numbers were 39 up and 33 out. West. Thanks Matt and crew on the Billy Boy for taking the time to bait us up mid-day. Mike

Greetings,
Gorgeous day on the water today. Got a nice 1/4 scoop of dines from deke and headed up to the Pea Patch. Fished from 30-65' of water for nada from the flat kind. Did catch a few blacks, bolina, and a cab for the box. The sharks were out in force today. We landed a 4.5 leopard shark, got bit off by another heavy fish, and landed about a 6' blue. Man did that thing put up a battle on my bass rod! Nearly spooled me, we had to run it down with the boat. Lots of fun, but wish it was a big flattie or wsb.
Absolutely flat as a pancake out there today. Shorts and t-shirt weather today. Remember to bring the shorts, or you'll have to make some out of old pants like I did today.
Come on tuna fisherman...tell me a story!!!
best fishes,
steve

Just in from a local Quail hunt with the dog and so far no chatter on the board today. Any fish reports?

Drove through Pismo on the way home at 1:30 p.m. and the ocean looked like a calm pond. A run is in order for tomorrow.

Practice your harbor entrys in the daylight in nice weather using your compass, gps and your radar. I have a safe spot outside of Port San Luis I hit with my gps and run my course inside from there using my compass and radar. I do it the same way every time so its automatic. Ultimately your compass is your best friend once you hit your mark.

Cloud:

Everyone should do their own boat, as each compass will read differently. Yes, your numbers sound ballpark, but your compass could be a few degrees off too. Does anybody ever swing their compasses anymore? I doubt it. So your numbers might not work for the next guy. But you've got the right idea - go with it.

Harrell made a great point. I've had to run that bar numerous times on big swells, and when you can't see anything but the wave back that you're following in, you need to be able to follow an exact heading in. And following your little boat symbol on your gps isn't accurate enough and can be more dangerous because you've got your head buried in the instrument trying to follow and correct the track when your head should be up. A couple quick glances at a compass are much better and will be far more accurate at that short distance than trying to correct a gps track on your screen.

Ask me how I know (the rock still has fiberglass embedded in it)!

Eric

Also an additional suggestion:

If you haven't already done it, go to that buoy and mark it in your GPS and practice and log the correct compass heading through the entrance.
If you think it is fun when the swell is up wait until you also have pea soup fog !

Gang:

Although the rockfish season is almost over, and the winter big swell season is just starting upon us, a bit of safety information is in order when leaving or entering the harbor. As most of you know, the Morro Bay entrance can be a bad place for boats to be at times during large swells. What's a "large" swell and when can it be "bad?" Well, there are alot of other factors like wind and tide, but suffice to say that between October and May is the most likely time for there to be a problem in the entrance. When there is a problem, the Coast Guard posts the "Hazardous Bar Warning," which is just that; the bar, or entrance, to the harbor is hazardous. If there is any question, just call us at 772-6254 or marine channel 12 or 16. If you see any whitewater crashing over the jetty, that's a pretty good indicator that something might be up.

The reason that I bring this up is that there are many more days that don't qualify as "hazardous," but have the potential for problems. These are the days when waves are breaking not in the channel, but on the north and south sides of it. So long as you stay in the channel, you will likely stay out of trouble. Which finally brings me to my point: TO STAY IN THE CHANNEL MEANS THAT YOU HAVE TO PASS CLOSE BY THE SEA BUOY, OR "MB" BUOY A MILE OR SO STRAIGHT OUT WHETHER YOU ARE COMING OR GOING!!!. Don't cut the corners! Big closeout hazardous bar days are obvious. It's the marginal days that have breaking waves on both sides of the channel where you guys have to exibit some restraint and not cut the corners. This means that when you're coming home from fishing Buchon, DON'T COME STRAIGHT INTO THE OPENING!! Swing by the sea buoy first and you are in the best channel. Ditto and vise-versa from the north. Make your approach from the sea buoy outside all the time and get in the hhabit of doing so. It might save your life some day.

Here and there but not so much at Sal. It did not seem to bother anything. There was lots of bait balls right in it and we caught rockfish in it or under it because we did not know how deep it went.

Looking to make the run to Davidson Seamount on Sunday and leaving on Saturday out of Morro. Plan on stopping Saturday afternoon and bottom fishing and anchoring up past San Simeon. This would leave a small run to Davidson in the morning. What is a good web sight on the posting of what they are catching in Monterey, if there is one?

Efern,
I was told that from Monterey to the Davidson is about 42nm. Most of the recent catches have been under the 50nm range.
Good luck
