Fish pics are great. I love them. I just don't understand it when folks never post any info on this board (yet use all of our info)...then, when the season is over, post pics of big fish taken off of our coast with absolutely no info or even incorrect info. I don't even need info, but a good fish story would suffice. Otherwise, what's the point? lat, steve |

Stu on Graylight got a single albie out of Monterey Saturday, jig fish, no bait available, said it was rough rough rough! Hopefully after the full moon? Good effort by the True Pioneer...can't get them if you don't make the effort. Mark (Ms. Mackey) and I slayed the lings and rockies up at Pt. Reyes this Saturday...really good fishing topped by Mark's 25lb ling. |

I plan on doing a little more scouting for albacore this season but both bait operations have shut down for the year so we may have to make our own bait with lucky Joes. There have been lots of fish off of Monterey lately but the full moon may have slowed their feeding during the day. Post if any of you are planning a trip and maybe I'll run out with you. Bob |

Has anyone checked out 35.40 and 121.25 for tuna? We saw fish there last week coming home from 86-miles. That area was jugged with life and we spotted 2 seperate bait spots with jumpers. It was very late in the day so we weren't able to give it a fair check. The zone is roughly 37-miles from The Rock. New SST last night shows clean, 62-degree water in that neck of the woods. Boats to our north are still getting some fish so it would be worth a check with decent weather. |

Michael, Thank You for your updated comments. I guess these days with as hard as we have been hit that I jump when I perceive anything as being against us. My apoligies if I was incorrect. As far as the smaller fish limit Darby (Virg's Landing) and I while at some meeting, someplace, some year, years ago felt that a lessor limit of rock fish would create a situation where the passengers would not still pay to fish on our boats. There were those who fished in private boats that felt that they could live with a lessor number. In the end the reduction in the total daily catch was reduced too much to generate any real time benefits. So we pretty much work from a ten fish limit standpoint and try to get the best season that we can within those parameters. Next and the following year as well our season for the Central Coast is May through Nov. So we are gradually getting some time back. Thanks, Steve Moore Patriot Sportfishing |

Sarah, The mackrel probably was not used for chum.Sardines, those may have been ran on a chum line or they could have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most of us dont use mackrel for chumming.Hope thats helpfull. |

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm a grad student studying the diet habits of albacore (I've personally met some of you at the docks and boats). I'm currently dissecting a stomach from a fish caught on the Princess out of Morro on 9/02/05. The stomach contains 6 chub (aka Pacific) mackerel (Scomber japonicus) and 3 sardine. Could they be chum/bait? In my notes I didn't record that this particular trip used chum, but that may have been an oversight on my part. All fish are about the same length (mack = 7", sardine = 5") and all are in a similar state of digestion (not very digested, only about 10-20% gone). These are all hints that the fishes are chum. I know sardine is a common bait, but what about chub mackerel? I only ran across that on one trip this year, out of San Diego, and there were very few mackerel compared to sardine and anchovy. Any thoughts? I hoped those of you who know the MB bait boats might be able to shed some light. Thanks! Sarah Glaser, PhD student Scripps Institution of Oceanography |

Hey Steve...Please be advised that I am on your side. I got those numbers from Allcoastsportfishing.com as they have all the numbers from your reports for the whole year. I just added up the rockfish numbers. Everyone should look at those numbers because they are very interesting and because you know the enviros use them to support MLPAs. I think it would be more profitable for you to have more total paying passengers every year by keeping the season open all year. You get payed no matter how many fish get caught..So please don't get defensive cause I would like to see you make money all year round. I do understand the Biomass and the whole BS about the restrictions..my family are commercial fisherman,we have two draggers in SB, and they tell me all about the stuff that goes on. In my world there would be no MLPAs and you and I could fish like it was 30 years ago. Good Luck! |

Michael, I do not know where you got that number as the season ended yesterday, but for the sake of this argument I will assume that somehow you are correct. I could get the right number real easily for you by counting the number of passengers we carried this year and mutiplying it by a number somewhere near ten as our passengers for the most part caught thier limit while fishing on our boats this summer. I am sure that the Virg's average is real close to ours and you are right as they have five boats to our two they definitley carried more passengers than Patriot Sportfishig did. I do not understand your logic though. We are required to use no more than two hooks are restricted to fishing inside o 40 fathoms and were only allowed to fish for 6 months this year. Did it ever enter your mind that there must be millions of pounds of fish in the restricted areas that we fish. That with the regulations as they are written we could not be taking anywhere close to the total amount of fish that are in the areas that we fish. Taking a random number even though seeming a large number and forming an opinion about the health of a fishery is a very dangerous and wrong thing to do. You have no idea of what the total biomass is. We are fishing under the most restrictive laws in the history of fishing and quite frankly uniformed opinions like this are not healthy to anyone who makes his or her living on the ocean or just enjoys it for recreational uses. As far as your suggetion of lowering the limit to 6 or 8 fish in order to fish year round I suggest that you get involved in the process of fisheries management. With the models used we would have to lower our limts to 3 to 4 fish in order to fish year round. This is something that the greater majority of stakeholders in the process are not willing to do.. There are more sealions in Ca. than in any time in history. The Government knows this, they also know the public has no stomach for eradication. Whats sad is to see the young crushed by the big males at the haulout areas. There are too many and they are stressed. And there are the clowns that want to save the sick ones and spend millions doing so while my wife buys her own supplies for her class room. What`s wrong with this picture. Capt Dave |

Michael, if Patriot Sportfishing brought in 57,000 rockfish, at 3lbs each would equal about 85 tons of fish. If sealions eat 40 lbs per day then they eat 3 million tons per season. Why don't we focus on eliminating just 10 sealions so we could fish all year? According to a study done at Santa Barbara Isl, the diet of sealions consist of 37% juvinile rockfish. The Marine Mammal Protection Act needs to be re examined or we will wind up with depleted fish stocks and sick sealions all over our beaches. Bob |

Stacey, 75-80' 2oz jighead with a 7" solid white swimbait. A little fight when 1st hooked (head shakin') then dead weight (barn door) until he got 4' from the boat. Then a little more fight. Felt like a huge chunk of kelp comin' up. Fished N of the launch in front of the house that's being built. |
