Hey Thanks Steve for looking into some of that..I'll have to make some official-authority phone calls this week to be sure, but hey I've always thought about throwin spinners or baits between the avila bridge and the golf course or somewhere in there. Ill let you know what happens Cory, A.Grande

Cory,
Steelhead fishing is very restricted around here nowadays. I grew up catching steelhead in Pismo and Arroyo Grande Creeks, but they don't let you fish them anymore. You can fish some of the Big Sur Creeks for steelhead, but it is all barbless hooks, fishing only on Sat, Sun and a weekday, catch and release only. Not sure what regs are on SL Creek, but I imagine the same as A.G. Creek (no fishing below reservoir). That being said, not sure what they say about fishing for nookies. They are non-native to SL Creek, so I'd imagine that they'd like you to take them out of there...but I'm not sure if they have regs set up for that. I would definitely call and ask someone. Here's a link to the regs: http://www.fgc.ca.gov/2006/06freshfishregbookbw.pdf
I've thought about chuckin spinners in the estuary for those nookies too!
Give us a report if you go.
later,
steve

Hey Shawnster ;

No havent been out lately, was going to fish last week but honeydos kept me busy, but some of the guys in the club had good luck MORO STRAND , standard oil beach.
DAVE;
I remember the days I had two sons in the first gulf war , worry , worry, worry, all three boys were jarheads , its a family tradition,I got them all home now , your son will be in my prayers.
On a lighter note JR and I went to a boat christining yesterday a 48 ft Bertran sportfisher in Ventura the new MARISA RENEE, the best part of this story is JR and I are part of a five man crew , taking this sportfisher to CABO next week, we leave Ventura Sat morning, run to San Diego fuel up and off to Cabo , with a two day stop at CEDROS ROCKS for them COW tuna, gonna fish all the way down.
Gonna be a good trip , with lots of fishing on the way.
We will be in Cabo till DEC 2 , the boat will stay there and become part of the PISCES fleet.
Hope to have some awsome pictures to post when we return.
Anyway guys and gals thats what i will be doing for the rest of the month.

Harrell,
Will could probably answer this question better than I, but I know that they have documented chinook spawning in SL Creek all the way up through SLO. Next time you are in SLO, take a walk along the Mission and look for 10-20# dark looking fish in the tailouts of pools. These size chinook would probably dig redds (nests) in gravel that is from 2-4" across.
This is one of the things I miss the most about Oregon...watching 10-40# chinook chase each other around creeks the size of SL creek. It is cool!!!
best fishes,
steve

T-nts Update per Monterey Board: They're still here.

Nov. 10
There are a few boats out near the weather buoy catching Albacore today. The anglers are catching at 36'30/122'30. There is some wind on the water but it is not bad. The scores are ranging from 1-5 fish a boat so far this morning. The anglers who are working the live bait are doing best this morning. I will let you know how they end up but it looks like the Albacore are going to be a round for a few more weeks.

Steve,Yeah that trip rocked it was a blast. The tail ran from 15 to 45 lbs.the bluefin about the same.As far as a 5 day trip like that, well the ticket was about $1200.00 fuel sur was about $75.00 gear roughly $500.00.But you know what man Ill tell ya it was worth every penny.Im planning two more trips next year on the Red Rooster III.One in spring and one in Fall.Fall is when the fat yellowfin and wahoo come about. The more central coasters on a run the better, know what I mean.

steve, we chose doc abrames place south to lease. i have a ten year lease with a roll over option. we have a primitive launch ramp to use (only at high tide) and we allso use the ones in town . we prefer fishing between may 15th and and early october because thats when the winds really calm down and you can leave your boat moored and still sleep at night. yellowtail and grouper early in the summer switching to dorado, sierra, and some times yellowfin and sailfish south of us. christmas can be excellent yellowtail fishing off the big island but keep an eye to the north for those north wind and full throttle home.

I see a lot of posts about Mexico and I have a couple of motors for sale that would be great for the land without sophisticated Marine Service organiztions. These are 175HP Johnson Ocean Runners, 1995 vintage with roughly 1000 hours. Not very fuel efficent, but they are pretty simple to work on. Located in LA and still on the boat so you can hear them run. Includes controls.Johnson Ocean Runners

Steve,
I love the Bay of LA, probably won't be visiting this time. I've stayed at Daggett's Camp a half dozen times. Beautiful spot, good fishing and great place to hang out. Unfortunately those winds can howl...it seems from almost any direction and all at once!!! Where is your house? That is awesome to have a place down there. It is amazing how isolated Bay of LA is, even thought it is only 10-12 hours from the border!

Steve, Dave(s),

They have really tightened up the restrictions to use the hoist at Gaviota. You have to take 2 classes to get certified and your boat needs to also be inspected and certified for certain requirements and equipment. This all has to be done ahead of time so you can't just show up and use the hoist anymore.

The beach launch is doable if you are an experienced beach launcher (as most on this site are) but beginners should not try it especially if the swell is up. I have also seen some entertainment watching people beach launch. Also, DO NOT DRIVE ON THE BEACH (ranger will be really mad if you do and definitely cite you or worse).

Dave,
Nice Klamath...I had the same boat for about 6 years with stern wheels. It was a dreamy boat for launching up in Trinidad and in Baja. Do you ever fish down in Baja? Your boat is perfect.
When I moved to Oregon I decided to get a little bigger boat (15'6"), but still wanted the possibility of launching off the beach. The photo is in Baja: San Lucas Cove to be exact. My brother built the swing arm and it works great. I can launch most anywhere. It would be a little tough to launch through big surf though.
btw, I'm heading down to Baja for a month on Dec. 21st. Anyone else heading down there from around here?
best fishes,
steve

Hey Steve,
Where was your pic taken ? I'm already set-up for beach launching. If it's too rough to beach launch then I don't belong out there in my little boat anyway.

Dave
I've launched my skiff off of the Gaviota peir several times. You have to roll your boat out onto the peir, so you either have to have a very light boat that you can pick the tongue up with or a wheel or some other contraption to roll it. Your little wheel attached to the trailer doesn't roll very smoothly across peir planks, but I've seen it done. I've got a tricycle wheel...basically the spare tire rotates down. YOu also need to have a rated sling. This just started 2 years ago. They will not let you launch unless you have a rated sling, so homemade slings with no rating are not allowed. You have to pay the State Parks folks to launch also...so it is not free.
Check out tricycle pic:

Dave...guys beach launch smaller tin boats and inflatables at Gaviota with some regularity. When the hoist on the pier works it can slao be used.
I've seen some pretty good train wrecks by beach launchers over the years at Gaviota, but for the most part it's straightforward if you take your time and time the sets.
Launching at Gaviota will get you close to the kelps and reefs to your west. Shallow water rockfish and bass pretty much this time of year. Not much else...and be careful...this time of year, especially in the evenings after a dry front rolls by, it's common to have sustained 30 knot offshores up there, with far higher gusts. It's flat inshore when it's like that, but a light boat with a dead engine will rapidly get blown outside. Set the hook FAST if you can't get the engine going...then work on the engine. Anchor first, then address the problem!
