Eric: I do not have a copy of the CEQA report, but spent as much time as I could reading it at the Commission meeting (they had a couple copies to review at the meeting). If you have a copy of the report, let me know because I want to copy it and do my research and send in our evaluation. Please contact me Eric ASAP on this ... Mel |

Mel: The CEQA report isn't flawed, it's garbage-in/garbage-out! That report says that there are "three" commercial fishing ports in San Luis Obispo county: Morro Bay, Port San Luis, and Avila. Bet you didn't know that, did you! Also, it says that a pollution event from the abandonment of a commercial fishing vessel due to excessive fishery regulation is "unlikely." Can anybody say "Susan Diane" or "Gina?" As far as I'm concerned that report is pure trash. We all need to read it carefully and pick out the bogus parts to bring to the Commission as evidence to have it tossed. Eric Endersby |

Friends: As we move into the dead-zone of the year, you might as well hear some boring news about fishing politics. Harold Davis, Darby Neil and I went to Santa Monica this past week for the California Fish & Game Commission meeting. We had received information that Richard Rogers, the “swing vote” in the August meeting in Monterey (that effectively took away all of the best rock fishing areas for “marine reserves” under the MLPA), might be waffling about his position. The August vote became the Commission’s preferred alternative, but they are free to make changes to that August-decision. The CEQA (environmental impact report on the proposed options) is really flawed and does a poor job of evaluating the environmental and economical impact of these closure options. There is still a slight chance that the closure areas on the central coast might be changed. We are fighting hard to reduce the size of the reserves at Pt. Buchon and Cambria. Harold, Darby and I all spoke on the above issues, imploring the Commission to reduce the closures in our area. At the end of the day, Richard Rogers did express the thought that he was disappointed with the draft CEQA report and might be open to changes in the closures. We will continue to press our points to the Commissioners between now and the meeting in February in Monterey. In March the final decision on the location of closures is supposed to be made. However, the Commission could push back the vote on this issue if they do not approve of the CEQA report. Although things still look bleak for us here on the Central Coast, I will continue to keep you posted. Melvin de la Motte |

This was the first season in the last 30 years that I did not catch at least a couple albies on either my own boat or a partyboat.I had to go to Mexico for my bluewater fix..On the other hand we did have a pretty good salmon season during which my friends and I netted 31 keepers on Good Karma between April and July.We even caught a couple "lost" white seabass in October.I just want to thank eveyone for their generosity in postng current and ACCURATE info,on the water and on this website. We all benefit when we cooperate. My boat is in dry storage until the salmon opener.Happy holidays and tight lines to all....jeff |

What Mike said...thanks to everybody for burning fuel and spending the bucks, reporting on good trips and bad, and for keeping the crew in live bait. I feel very blessed to have been able to get tuna this year...and am keeping my fingers crossed for next year. |

Just a quick word of thanks to the Live Bait guys for keeping our tuna dreams alive during 2006 and to the locals for scouting. Also, Harrell for keeping an ear to the VHF. This present "moderate" El Nino could produce a great 2007! Fingers crossed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Bob, I copied this from another board. I don's think skip will care. Too bad no fish. Went out with Joe and Jared on the Therapy II,a 25` Sea Cat. Headed to the temp break at 45 miles just short of the donut, running at 35 mph.Got there pretty quick, put the lines in and trolled on out to 70 miles southwest. No bait marks at all, just 2" jellyfish everywhere. Started following the Santa Lucia ridge towards the elbow area.Trolled another 10 miles with no marks, just more jellyfish. Headed to the current break above the donut, major kelp patties and current.soaked anchovies for 45 minutes for nothing. Next picked up gear and ran 20 miles up to the other good looking area west of morro bay. The water looked better up here, with lots of birds working.(40 miles west of morro) Did the run and gun method, chasing down where the birds were, dropping baits and trolling some times. We finally saw a little bait mark in this area. The area looked good 24-40 miles out. Called it quits at about 4 pm.I think we covered about 180 miles, burning 80 gallons of gas. Tried calling other boaters out there but no answer.Water was nice, had a good boat ride. I think it`s over, maybe the fat lady already sang, but we didn`t know it! Paul |

Bob; I was taking to Joe Perry (Therapy II) until we lost communication at about 11 am and he had no fish at that time. I think he was the only boat out there and I don't know what happened later. Thought I would post this for those that don't get John's report. Looks like our bluebird weather is about to end ! SWELL: This afternoon's 2 to 4 foot northwesterly (280°) swell (with an 11-14 second period) will continue at this period and height through Tuesday, increasing to 3 to 4 feet (with a 12-20 second period) on Wednesday through Thursday. Preliminary Analysis: A series of low pressure systems in the north Pacific will produce long-period west to northwesterly swell trains beginning on Friday and continuing through next week. A 6 to 8 foot northwesterly (297°) swell (with an 18-20 second period) will arrive along our coastline Friday morning, increasing to 10 to 12 feet (with a 16-18 second period) by Friday afternoon through Friday night. This afternoon's surface charts have been indicating the development of a strong wind fetch about 475 miles directly west of Diablo Canyon on Friday afternoon. Swell from this area of wave generation is expected to reach our coastline by early Saturday morning at 14 to 16 feet (with a 14-16 second period). If this incoming westerly (270°) swell develops, it will be too far south to be pick up by any of the offshore buoys before it reaches our coastline, so wave height and period accuracy could be off. Gale force northwesterly winds along our coastline on Sunday will generate an 11 to 13 northwesterly (300°) sea/swell (with a 7-14 second period on Sunday). A 10 to 12 foot northwesterly (285°) swell (with a 16-18 second period) is expected to reach our coastline next Monday. ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION: Dry north to northeasterly (offshore) winds will continue to produce clear weather with cold nights and warm days through Wednesday. The mid-latitude westerlies across the Pacific are starting to increase, promising a southward shift in the storm track. The initial cold front should have its main impact on Northern California, weakening as it approaches our local area on Friday night. This cold front is expected to produce about 0.20" of rain from Friday night through Saturday morning, turning to scattered showers by Saturday afternoon. This will be followed by another cold front arriving late Saturday night and will spread light to moderate rain over our area through Sunday morning. Very windy, partly cloudy and cool weather is forecast on Sunday late morning through Monday. I went out today for albacore from Morro Bay and put the lines in at 20 mi at the first temp break. There was lots of sign but the water was only 56 degrees. After trolling eight lines using my outriggers for zero we picked up and ran for the donut. The temp break was at 45 mi where there is a hard break of 4 degrees up to 58.6. I got there at 10:30 and trolled around until 3:30 for only three bonito. The weather got very nice after 11:00. I was the only boat to make it out to the warmer water today. I hope the guys going Sunday get them. If I had bait there were a few spots I would have soaked it. I saw one decent mark at 125 ft at 50 mi. Bob |

I used the 7ft throw net for many times in avila and one good throw and you'll have a scoop of sweet anchovies, look for the birds diving and then find the bubbles coming up from the bait school and throw. Don't throw on small chovies cause they get gilled in the net and its a pain getting them out. Also throw in shallow water cause the bait will swim out from under the net if there is no bottom to trap them. Good luck!!! |

Bob--I bought a bait net years ago but never had much luck with it. In fact I still have it. Sabiki's put lots more in the well. The smallest ones they make worked best for chovies. They seem to be spooked by the larger ones. FWIW Cloud out |

Cabo fish report The five day trip from Ventura to Cabo was great fishing with the striped marlin crashing every jig in the water south of turtle bay. We ended up landing and releasing five at 100-175 lbs. The Dorado were on fire with several comming on jigs at ten knots. Near Cabo we got into the yellow fin and boated five fish to 50 lbs. the wind is up now so lounging by the pool will have to do. Headed home tomorrow and will post a few pics. |

It looks like Saturday will be best for me to run for tuna if weather permits. I ordered an eight foot 1/4in cast net for bait from Cabelas. It looks like a 50 mi run to the temp break but there could be fish in the cooler water inside. CCFCC will make a presence at the Dec 6-8 DFG Commission meeting in Santa Montica regarding the MPA's. Once again we will stress keeping local areas open to rockfishing. Some of the commissioners may be open to reconsidering their proposal after realizing they were mislead by the fishing opponents about just how much of the rock bottom was included in the reserves. Thanks to Mel for your tireless effort in fighting for our right to fish. Bob Hather |

A note of a fellow fisherman, Over the last three years fishing out of Morro Bay, when the winds were blowing 15 to 25 knots, and the Salmon, had finally turned on late in the afternoon, there has been another boat, either just in front of us or just behind us loading loading at the ramp, with many beautiful Salmon, limts. It is a 21 foot Seaswirl, named the R&R. Ron Sigler senior and his son Ron Sigler, Junior. The last few years we started sharing information daily while fishing and thru out the seasons. Having the R&R with both Ron Sr. and Ron, Jr. helped us tremendousley increaseing our catches. The other part was knowing we have had another boat out there watching our back's when most other boats had gone home. Many day's on the water fishing and many times sharing information inbetween. Both father and son I have come to appreciate through this fishing friendship. Saturday, afternoon Ron Sigler, senior called me for the first time, the news he shared was very disheartning. On Saturday morning some friends went to wake Ron Sigler, junior up and he had passed in the night. I want to share my heart felt sadness for Ron seinor, and his family, and say this is a fisherman that will be sincerly missed and always remembered. Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ. PS. Ron, junior did not post on this site, but the information we shared together on the water has been. |

This is a recent blue caught in front of the Diablo Power Plant. I keep telling the DFG that the fish are getting bigger but they don't believe me. Actually, this is a grouper caught on a ten day trip on the Royal Polaris that returned on Thanks Giving. The fish came in 360 feet of water below Mag Bay. Great eating. Bob |

It looks like late next week the weather will good for a look on the outside for albacore. I may try to make some bait on Tuesday or Wednesday and keep it in the bait tank at the slip for a run later. Friday and Saturday are the days I can run out. If anyone else is thinking of looking for albacore then I will share my bait if I have any so post to let me know. Bob Hather |

Looks like the only decent weather might fall on Sunday at 10-15 kts + small swell per Nws. The pre-storm lull. |

Stu/Team Graylight--Joy Lyn is still in the tuna game if a window opens--looking to cooperate on coverage. We got hammered by the Bonito last time out (two five-poles, a quad and two doubles) but still looking to put some LFT on deck. Been a zigged when we shoulda zagged ordeal so far this year. Cloud out |

i doubt there is enough water flow for anything to get past the ladder at Marre dam...you can watch the fish from below the dam..look for vulchers perched around the golf course, that will let you know when there are fish milling around...i'm not sure about fishing regulations, but make sure YOU do...the area is heavily patroled by wardens and citizens protecting these fish from poachers |

Hi Everyone, Well I went out to see what I could come up with on Thanksgiving Day. Stopped by PSL for about 2 hours..SAW NOTHING/HEARD NOTHING. I then moved to the HWY 1 bridge area as I saw ONE guy still fishing pretty much close to the BRIDGE, ON THE OCEAN/BEACH SIDE. So I decided to investigate all the comments/messages about Steelhead and Salmon in the SL creek. I pulled out my high powered binoculars, and scoped the creek till I ended up @ Higuera/Prado/Elks area and took the Madonna exit back home to AG. I did not see any fish/fins/flashes/breaches/swirls NOTHING. I dont know what else to say..other than WATER CLARITY WAS EXCELLENT, IF THERE WAS A 10 inch trout in there I easily wouldve been able to see it. I'll keep hunting, Cory AG |
