Please don't shoot the messenger !
All the forcasts and computer models including the wave model went ugly for this weekend. The only good thing I saw this morning was that the Pt. Arguello buoy temp went up to 60 degrees so the north bound current is still active. This may give us a shot if the weather backs off. Still really big storms in the Gulf of Alaska and the pacific northwest coast which will keep the swell up in our area.

Bad weather, great fishing. Good scores 50 miles sw from Morro Bay late today, just inside the doughnut. Much better area for weather and the indications look good for the w/e.

Jim

They just derated the hoist from 3 tons to 2 tons this year. You must have your boat rigged for a 3 point lift and have your own "certified" lifting Strap. The hoist tends to break down quite often. So its best to call and check the status before you go.

Jim,

I think the limit is 2 ton but you better call them to check. Look in the phone book under state of california parks.

Monday went out of Gavoita to the 34.20/120.50 area looking for tuna. Got a late start due to our hesitation to go because the weather forecast changed overnight to "Small Craft Advisory - 15 to 25kt winds". So the crew and I weren't going to go, then we were just going to go check it out, then what the hell it ain't that bad and we were there. We saw lot's of sea life but nada on the albies. Headed back in, put back out a couple of lines and hooked a 140# thresher.

Weather, SST and weekend prospects:
Last night was real ugly!! CSM buoy peaked at 11 ft at 7 seconds with 25 kts wind.
The computer models indicate good weather this weekend into mon/tues.
Last nights SST showed the break has moved up to 34:40 and 121:20 which would be about 40 miles out of Avila. The temp has dropped which is to be expected with this much wind.
Right now it looks like there might be another shot this weekend! Will keep watching.

The Fish are 50-60 miles @ a 180-200 heading. another guy at Port had 11 at 40 miles the same heading. Make sure the weather is good and your boat can handel it.Thats where all the party boats arew at as well. Good luck and be careful.

SST/Weather:
The wind and swell came back up last night and is blowing 15+ with 7ft at 8 sec down in the area where the fish are. The computer models indicate more of the same for the rest of the week with a possible lull, like yesterday, fri/sat.
Last night's SST showed some movement of the plume holding tuna towards the donut. It didn't get any closer but at least is showed some movement north.

Killed them today!!!
But i agree with the post below. The weather was a little rough and choppy. Some parts would calm down flat but other parts where really bumpy. We put 20 fish on. All on the troll. All the party boats are there Killen them on bait. But what is nice is the fish are there, about 50-60 miles south or port. I herd of fish being caught as close as 40 miles The tuna were all big this time NICE i am stoked. A few mixed skipjack as well. It took us about 4+ hours to get back, was it worth it YES good luck guys. I guess the Party boat from San Diego was there so it must be hot. I am thinking this is our only shot from Port San Luis guys so be careful if you go

BEEN THERE DONE THAT.....
If any of you small (under 28 ft) boats are thinking of going 60-70 miles south consider my experience one day when it was called as light and variable, but blew 20 instead. My 25 took from 2 pm till 1 am the next morning to make it home to MB. Fuel burn for my 350 V8 was almost 140 gal. I had made the same trip (1908 spot) 2 weeks earlier and burned 92 gal. If anything had gone wrong with the boat I would have been screwed. as it was it took almost 11 hours of pure hell to fight 72 miles up hill against 7-8 ft seas. Big mistake I made was thinking I had to get home, I should have set course to Santa Barbara and hitchhiked or rented a car for the trailer. Keep that option in mind if you go, and don't go alone. That far from home a buddy boat is a MUST. Will I go that far again... Probably, will I do it when the forcast says 10-20??? The answer "no" is not strong enough, the answer is "HELL NO!!!" NO WAY!!

Good Luck, Tight Lines, and catch lots of fish!
But most of all "BE SAFE"

The only way to do it tomorrow is to get ready to go, get up early and check the buoys, then if it has stayed down cross your fingers and go ! Just be sure that you have enough fuel in case the wind comes back up because it will take more to get back than it did to get there and a lot longer !

Darby; what was the ave size of the albacore ?

NOAA says: 10-20, 10-20,... If it is 10 or less it should be OK if it hits 20 you won't want to be there ! None of the data that I have seen today tells me it will be good and none of it tells me it will be bad. If the fish were at 25 miles I would be going in the morning but because they are at 60-70 miles I won't be going !! Lots of luck to those that do and be sure and let us know if you find them at 25 miles.

Tony-probaly! But for fishin' like this, i'll take the beating. My records show this year we have only 25% of the fish we had this same time last year. PQ brought up a load of sardines from SD they used today. They ended up with over 275 alb and 12 big BF. The boats with the 'chovies still had well over 100. I think the seas will get a little better but may come up again mid-week. What's your take Harrell?

FINALLY!! The party boats are reporting that the weather has come down to light winds with a long, bumpy swell and they are wacken’ the fish! Admiral & Pac Queen have 125+ ea, Princess 107+ and I can’t even get the other boats (Ichiban and Pacific Horizon) to answer the phone. Dennis said everyone was sideways and busy on deck. They have a few BF and skippies mixed in too. I think they are still down in that same area about 70 miles but had good sign & water early last night while travelling out starting around 50 miles.

Saturday morning update:
The party boats are catching ! Don't know exactly where and the only thing I heard about the weather was "fishable". What's fishable to the Admiral does not necessarily mean fishable for a small boat. I would be more interested in "runable". Wouldn't want to spend all night getting back uphill !
The buoys are still showing wind to 15 and lump at 6 high and 8 duration which is not good for a long run. Will keep watching and hoping it gets better. NOAA still says mostly 10-20 kts wind.

Weather again!
The wind at the Pt. Arguello buoy, which is about 10 miles above the break, came down at noon today and if it stays down all night may give us a shot at the tuna down there. Even with the wind below 10 kts the lump is still there and needs time to flatten out. The buoys below Pt. Arguello and The PSL buoy have come back up above 10 kts so will just have to see what happens over night. John's (PGE) forecast is pretty good for the Diablo area. NOAA's forecast is typical (cya) 10-20, 10-20 , etc. I will be up early tomorrow to see what happens over night.
Comment:
The buoy reports list swell heights and two durations; DPD and APD which is dominant period and average period. The dominant period is always longer than the average period and does not always reflect the real conditions for a boat out in it. The radio weather gives the longer period which can be deceiving when there is a lot of short stuff out there from more than one direction, like now !

My boat is a 18ft WA Trophy. It's rigged for the hoist. I fish out of there all the time for T-sharks. My only problem launching out of there for albie's is the bait situation. I'll have to spend a little time jigging up bait first.

You know it's slow when you keep visting the same web sites reading the same post over and over again, my eye's are getting blurry. I keep looking for some sliver of hope that the bite is going to go WFO close in and the wheather is flat calm. I know I'm not the only one out there thinking this. Will someone just post the following "Headed out of Morro Bay, wheather flat calm, 14 miles out saw jumpers, put the lines in and WHAM!!! lines screaming ZZZZZZZ, total chaos, we under fire, fish every where, too many, lucky to get out a live. That would make me feel better.

The Pt.Arguello buoy which is about 12 miles above the break at Arguello Canyon is showing waves as high as 8 ft at 7 seconds and wind in the high twenties. The forecasts indicate it will be coming down but probably not enough. They are forecasting 10-20 for the weekend which is not good enough for me to run 40-50 miles in.Will be watching and hoping that the forecasts get better!

How big of a boat are you launching at Gaviota. I think that they de-rated that hoist since it has reliability problems. Better call ahead before you go.

SST:
There was a good SST image at 4 am today. The break that has been holding albacore down in the Arguello Canyon area moved 10 miles closer to Avila/Morro and is now at 34:35 and 121:10. Which is about 40 nm from Avila and 50 nm from Morro Bay. The water is starting to cooperate so lets hope the weather does too ! The forecast is not good for tomorrow but maybe Sunday.

I just want to know if the fish are in reach. I've noticed that your telephone reports have been including distance latley, please continue.

Weather summary:
Totally unpredictable ! None of the forecast have been accurate or in agreement lately. NOAA had "small craft" posted at 3 am this morning and all the buoys from PSL south are less than 5kts and "off shore".
SST:
Good clear image last eve and the break is right where the Princess and Ichiban caught their fish which is about 55 nm from Morro and about 10 less from Avila. Still a long haul for a small boat but doable in good weather if there is such a thing. The forecasts look pretty good for friday, maybe !!

Not looking good !
Weather: The wind models show continuing wind in our area for a week or more. There is a huge storm forming in the gulf of alaska that will send big swell into our area next weekend.
SST: That good looking water at Arguello Canyon is stalled at 34:20.
Monterey: The weather has been better up there and they are still catching albacore.

Mark,
I fished monterey last weekend. If I go there this weekend (I have'nt decided yet). I would go south to the 36.24/122.06 numbers first. There would probabbly be less boat traffic there. (farther from santa cruz) but thats just my opinion.

SST:
Wide open image at 7pm last eve. PSL buoy report showed 75 degrees at 6pm and 61.5 degrees at 7pm ! SST showed 61/62 at the buoy at 7pm. Either the sensor/computer malfunctioned or a seal sat on the sensor !
The water west of us is mushy again and doesn't show any good breaks. But ! the break that was at the Rodriguez a week ago is now 20 miles closer and at the 34:20 line which puts it 50 nm from Avila. Another week at that rate and we will have shot at the albacore.
The weather forecasts for the next few days are not very good and especially for a small boat to go south..

Hey tsunami nice pics . Seems to be the same count Elizibeth Jane landed. Our big fish ended up beimg 43# gutted. On sunday we ran to the motels in and metered around and tried to make bait but no luck. There was a couple of fish caught today (tues) but the squid was hard to get. We had three fish on the crome iron. It seemed like we got it when they wanted to bite.

A buddy and I had an excellent albacore trip on the Pacific Horizon Monday. We hit fish early in the morning for a 31/2 hour open bite but we kept in fish most of the day. Weather was perfect. Pinhead bait hard to keep on hook. Use 20 to 25# line and #4 hooks. I lost one when hook staightened. Some taken on jigs, megabaits, fishtraps, but mostly bait. Count was over 100 albies and one blue fin. 60 miles out toward arguello canyon

Tue fish:
Went looking for salmon in the area of the red light. Trolled for a couple hours with nada. Didn't see any other boats or any sign that indicated salmon. Pulled the gear and ran to the coke plant. Picked up one white seabass and one halibut. Quit at noon when the wind came up. Heard of a few 50+ lb white sea bass at Morro Bay.
Albacore:
The party boats are catching albacore south 60-80 nm in the arguello canyon to rodriguez area. Long haul for a small boat and especially when the wind comes up as it did today ! There have been some caught as close as 50 miles in green 59 degree water.
Weather:
The computer models do not look good for thurs/fri or this weekend with wind in the 15-20 kt range.

Fished for salmon at the red lite at avila on Sunday and picked up one on a white spoon at 40ft.Fish was 10 lbs. Lots of bait marks. Heard about white seabass being caught at the coke plant so picked up but it was over by the time we got there. Caught a 15lb halibut. At the pier there was salmon halibut albacore and white seabass at the cleaning table. Mike

Good question. I have been arguing for years that F&G has no right to require fishing licenses when we are fishing exclusively outside state waters for highly migritory fish.

Hey Darby, I have a question.

How is it that Cal F&G have control over the Albacore fishing? They are not in Cal water (3 miles out). With that in mind how can they require you to have a Cal fishing liscense if you are not fishing in California? Are these laws applied to where the fish are brought in and nothing to do with where they are caught?

Thanks,

David

TUNA FISHERMEN BEWARE! If you fillet your albacore at sea be sure to leave a 1" skin patch on your fillets. F&G is planning a sting operation primarily on the party boats but could be checking privates as well. This is not our local wardens and there is some suggestion that it is a revenue campaign for the State. (F&G doesn’t actually get fine money, directly.) This silly law only applies to filleting at sea. Once you hit the dock it is not required. For rockcod and all other fish caught in state waters, the entire skin must remain attached to the fillet. I encourage anyone that receives a citation that was really trying to abide by the regulations to fight it to the extent you can afford to. Our local wardens are doing all they can to work with us but are bound to the regulations just like we are. In fact F&G commission considers their input to the process only about as much as that of the public. Very little.

On a more positive note, THE PRINCESS WACKED ‘EM TODAY!! Down near the 1908. Tight lines & good fishn’.

I'm curious...has anyone tried fishing the Davidson or the fingers on the way there from Morro Bay??? When I was commercial jig-fishing those were terminal hotspots around this time of year.
Some of the localboys would have known me as Willy. I had a few Commercial boats in my 20 yrs in M.B..
hehehe...go figure, I move to Ventura and start construction with my Bro and I still can't get the saltwater outta my veins! :-)
Good fishin' to all and don't forget that the Rodriguez is still holdin some fish...If you have the boat and the range you may want to try the 1908...

Think we will make the run for those Croakers this week .. if your going out again later in the week shoot me an email.

Monterey it was ......... Called off looking for WSB and made the run up to Monterey this morning at around 3am. Got to the ramp and managed to find the "Lethal Weapon" for bait (Small chovies and one or two decent Sardines) Ran to our numbers to find the entire fleet where we planned on starting the day. Trolled for 2 hours before getting a double and then had the fleet climp up our chum line to 100 ft from the boat to push them down. Decided to get away from the hundred boats chasing radio fish and ran south to 30/13 where we put two more fish on the boat including one on bait. Worked the 13 line about 10 miles south of the fleet before pulling the plug just after noon with 7 fish on the boat, all good grade to 30lbs. Hope these fish show up down here .... would much rather play in my backyard than deal with the carnival up there at the moment.

Good Tuna News !
The Pacific Horizon had a really good bite this afternoon and the fish were a lot closer but I don't know exactly where. This morning's SST looks very good with a 2+ degree break 35-40 miles out. The break runs from the donut up to the 35:20 line and the plume behind the break is solid and runs west off the chart. If anyone is going out tomorrow and needs any info send me an e-mail. I was planning to go to Monterey Tuesday but would much rather fish here.

Hey Gang, Thank you to everybody who e-mailed me with weather and fishing info! Unfortunatly because of the fog using land marks was almost usless, so with use of my plotter I found an area 12nm up from Morro that was wide! We must have caught over 200 misc rock fish and lings! Only one keeper ling that hitch hiked a 1lb blue bass! we also kept 20 nice reds to about 5lbs and rounded out our limits of rockfish with some of the larger bluebass (have some ceviche cooking as I type)depth wise we caught our fih in 75-120ft of water on misc twintails and grubs also got a fair number of fish on the Big Hammer swimbaits we use down here for the calicos. Overall a fun trip for our first time out of Morro, and now that Ive seen the the setup up there I wouldn't hesitate to go the extra 30min or to launch there insead od Avila if the fish are closer to Morro...Larry

I went out rock fishin on Sat; could have limited easily. The fog never lifted and I didn't feel comfortable making the run to San Simeon, I stayed within a few miles of Leffingwale (sic) for multiple rockfish ,a few lings, 1 kept and a couple marginally-legal and multiple shorts released.
I'm considering playing hooky a day or two from work this week to go rockin while the season is still open. What's the latest, Can I rock fish past Sept? Is it legal to catch and release in non-season? ( I never fish in water deeper than 80 feet, so that released fish will most likely survive). Are wolf-fish/wolf eels legal to take?

We arrived at San Simeon at 7:00pm. With all the fog we couldn't really see where the birds were working the squid so as it got dark we just looked for bait balls in 60 to 70 feet of water. We went north a couple miles then south for a couple of miles. Only had about five squid show up and they wouldn't hit the the squid makers or lucky joes. Between the smell of diesel and the rolly polly ocean fishing in pitch dark leaves something to be desired. Caught a few roch fish on the way back and now ready for a little rest.

Here’s the post I promised on our Friday Albacore hunt. Was just too tired last night.

We worked the area from the Donut and to the west. Got six. Largest was weighed at 32-33#; the smallest looked to be at least 20#. All on jig strikes. I have yet to get a bait fish this year.

Started trolling at the Donut at 6:30AM towards the 1908. The party boats appeared to be working the area south and east of the 1908. They weren’t reporting anything great, so half way to the 1908 we turned west. Went to almost the 122 line and headed north. When we got a jig fish I circled the area once or twice and then continued on the route. First fish caught at 34-36/121-48 and last at 34-46/121-50. At 12:30PM we started heading in.

All the water we saw was green and murky. You couldn’t see the fish on the line until it was about 20’ under the boat. No temperature breaks. The water temp was between 60.0 and 60.5 throughout the entire area we trolled.

The conditions were pretty rough beyond 50 miles from the harbor. No wind to speak of, but lots of short period steep, choppy swells. 4-8’ footers constantly and the occasional 15’ rolling through. One of these caught the boat sideways and upset the bait tank. Never had the bait tank even move before. Anyway, I guess we looked pretty comical, the two of us on our hands and knees grabbing the little pinheads before they reached the scuppers, like some sort of Grunion hunt. The bait was tough, hardly any died, even the ones we scooped up off the deck. Conditions got much better as we got closer to home and at 30 miles out we could reach our 23Kn cruise.

Talked with Bob on the Windfall when we got back. He was headed up to San Simeon to look for seabass. I will Look forward to his report.

Stacey,
Be carefull in the morning .... dense fog warning for the entire weekend .... I did the skiff fishing for more than a few years myself so you may end up only being able to fish close to cambria ...good luck and we will be out Sunday and doing our thing up near San Simeon and then possibly out past the CSM bouy in the afternoon. Have new squid jigs on their way up from Ventura to make bait ... lets hope we find those croakers local this weekend.

Larry,
I'll be launching the aluminum out of Cambria in the morning if I get a partner & conditions permit. I'll be heading up to San Simeon for rockin or seabass?
I expect it to be calmer as per noaa's report inshore. however, If I go out, I think I'll get blown off (in the 14 footer) by noon. email me for my cell#.
Harrell, what's your opinion?

Larry,

The weather forecast lately have been predicting a little stronger winds then what the weather buoys have been reporting. I think its going to be less than 15 to 25.

Hey Gang, kinda of curios, thinking of coming up to fish the rockfish/halibut out of Morro, they are predicting 15-25 for saturday up there. How much of that blows on the inside say within 5-15miles of the harbor but not more than a couple miles out? When I trailer up out from Ventura I usually launch out of Avila and go offshore for albis. Ive never fished the inside or out of Morro before. Don't want haul all the way up just to get blown off the water..Thanks...Larry on the CalicoHunter III

Last eve's SST:
That plume of water west of us has been all mushed up by the wind so finding breaks won't be easy. On the bright side the break to the south moved north about ten miles and is right on the 1908! Let's hope it keeps coming. The wind has come down and still looks good for the next few days.

Fished outside of Santa Cruz on the 15th. Moved out to clearer water after getting 2 bluefin on MegaBaits 'bout 20 fathoms...better baitfish 25-40# on small herring with #2 black gorilla hooks...they were bending the #4's...weather was like a lake with lite breeze. Rodriguez Seamount should be holding heavy.

Just returned from a trip to Puerta Vallarta and fished the Corbetania bank. We caught numerous yellowfin but four cows. 240#, 340#, and two @ 380# and 7' long. Very serious running fish. All caught on live skipjack 5-7# on 12/0 hooks with 300# flourocarbon leaders. We also caught a few black marlin to just under 400# and one day fished for roosterfish for 7 of those from 40# up to 80#. I have been to cabo six or more times and this place blew cabo away. I will post some pics as soon as I get them. There are boat rides and fishing trips down there so give me an e-mail if you want to know who to use. They charged us 450 per day for a 10-13 hour trip.

I just talked to a commercial fisherman off the Horizon who came down and stopped in San Simeon for the night. HUGE WHITE SEABASS! He said they turned on the lights while anchored up and "the biggest white seabass he has ever seen" came to the boat with some squid. They (the fish) stayed all night. He got out the harppon to stick one and his skipper told him no, they didn't have a permit for seabass. They were anchored in 60' on the outer edge of the harbor.

Note, when the commercial albacore boats are coming down from up above, we have the best tuna bite going on the coast.

SST/Weather/Prospects
Totally clear SST last evening. The break down below the 1908 is has not moved in our direction very much but we know it is holding fish. A nice plume of water has developed much closer with the inside edge (break) about 12 miles west of the PSL buoy but we don't know if it is holding fish or even if the water is clean and blue ! There have been reports of big jumping fish by the boats coming in from the 1908 that could have been in or near this plume of water. It is possible they were bluefin so be sure and take rappalas/ mauraders and slow troll them waaaay back ! The weather is real ugly out there this morning but is forecast to come down sometime tomorrow with friday and the weekend looking good.
If anyone is going looking with David (windstone) and doesn't subscribe to Terrafin there are free sites where you can see SST's of this area. Send me an e-mail and I will send you the links.

We are going to make a Morro Bay Albacore search and hopefully find mission on Friday.

Havn't seen much chitchat from the private boaters about Albacore trips lately. But I think the good opportunities are ready to happen. Not sure where we are headed yet, but any advice is certainly welcomed. The weather looks good and we are ready to look if nothing else. Will try to post any results Friday night. If anyone else is considering a run that day please let me know so we can coordinate better coverage.
