I suppose I down-played the bumpyness a little, that was the first time I either dropped to my knees or rear on the deck to fish. Still a good time was had. Correction to last post i was using a lever-drag shimano tld25, It helped save my thumb on the descent. Michele if you have any digital photos try posting them to photobucket.com and post a link, it's a free site.

As someone on the boat said it's like pulling up a trash can. A rail plate and a 2 speed reel would come in handy but isn't necessary. I had a 4/0 wide spooled with 50# braided line using the big jigs they sell at virg's with chemical glow sticks, treble hooks and a tobacco bag filled with crushed mackeral attached. I got bit after dropping down 150-300 feet while 2 other guys near me had hooked up at lower depths and coaxed my squid to shallower waters. I don't think there is any great skill involved, its just a matter of having your lure in the right place at the right time. It was a little bumpy last night so all i could do was drop to my knees put the rod on the rail and wind. I'm still wanting to see a surface bite/ frenzy, so I'll probably be on the next weekend trip if there is one sheduled.

Rory, It was last night . I think we got six total. Treble hooks attached to the squid jigs really helped them from coming unbuttoned.

All,
Thanks again for info. and tips regarding the electric downrigger problem I am experiencing with my Scotty(s). As an update to service center and for general info. the service for Scotty now is Lodi, Fisherman's Friend (209)369-0204. The Pro-Troll in Concord no longer handles the Scotty line. Spoke to FF person who sounded pleasant and eager to help, he says it could be an upgrade only way to tell is send them in and Scotty will take care of the upgrade repair and send them back. Well, so far so good. So next step put them in the mail and hope for the best.

This link has a phone no.for Scotty and some repair centers. A couple of years ago Scotty put out a free retrofit kit to solve that problem. It fixed mine.

I think if you open the top of the downrigger there's a way of adjusting the amount of drag. Been awhile since I looked at mine.

Harold,
Thanks for the quick response. Yeah, does this sound familiar? The trouble I had toward the end of season last year was the weight once retrieved on "auto", as you know hits the top of boom where it always as stopped, and the weight stays put tangling there, then of course you hit the switch to off. Problem I am experiencing is that once it hits the top of the boom, its stops Ok but the weight slips dropping anywhere between 10-20 feet back down into the water. Just seems to me there must be a braking mechanism worn or something not engaging in the gearing. Anyhow, again thanks amigo for the tip. I am on it first thing tomorrow.

Dave, that sure is a good explanation, and thanks for the personal email. Great chatting with you brother.

"Freddy, that is a quote from a speaker we had at a mig meeting, when I said basically the same thing you said in your post. My question at the time was, why are we being so restricted so for a non target fish, non target because the customers didn`t want them. The answer was they are targeted down south because you fish deeper water. In fact when I ran my 6 pack boat out of Newport Harbor and fished the 14mi bank and the east end of Catalina in 70-100 fathoms I targeted them. As you say easy to identify on the meter. Hope that is a good explanition."

I own 2 Scotty electric downriggers. I had a problem back in 2001 which sounds much like what you are describing. I called Scotty Pro-Troll (Concord CA) (925) 825 8560. The person I dealt with was really great. I described my behavior problem, he said he thought he knew what I needed, and shipped me the parts (no charge, I think they have a lifetime warranty on their parts). He said call him back and he would talk me through the installation if I needed help. Turned out I didn't; everything worked out great. I hope you can have as good luck/service.

Problem is the brake (I think) needs replacing if there is one...Kinda frustrated cuz you go to the Web and nothing is offered other...any help greatly appreciated.

Response to Dave Rymal:

"The Boccacio problem is below Conception where it`s a target species"

Dave,

Let's not perpetuate enviro blather onto other management areas. A trawl survey has never been conducted by the PFMC (Alec McCall) below Pt. Conception, so the status of bocaccio is not known.

They are (were) a target species because they are so abundant and still are. It's almost impossible to rockfish in SoCal, particularly south of the N. Channel Islands without encountering them. Our limit is now one in the 10 fish rockfish bag limit. They are everywhere and easily read on the meter because they school about 3 fathoms above the bottom and are very aggressive, so difficult get below them with iron to the vermillion, staries, etc.

To assume there is a problem ("The Boccacio problem is below Conception where it`s a target species") where historically no trawl survey has been conducted, validates the B.S. and blather. Its abundance is the reason it was abandoned in favor of Cowcod to create what is now known as the 4300 square mile Cowcod Conservation Area.

Cooked a little more of the Humboldt fillets up last night. This time I beat the heck out em with my mallet and got them up to about twice the original size. Dipped em in egg batter, rollem em in bread crumbs and fired them in my wok using peanut oil. Thought we were eating Abalone. Everyone raved and it was gone in minutes. Made a great sauce by mixing mayo with Bullseye chipotle BBQ sauce and a touch of habanero (hot but real tasty).

Marty ; If you want then BLOODY SAND WORMS quick, pick up a pack at VIRGS they had a good supply of them , as for rigging same as a carolina rig for fresh water , 1/4 to 3/4 slider weight swivel 24 inch leaded hook size depends on fish , I like a 4 or 2 red color.
Use half the worm , thread it on and leave a 1/2 inch sticking out , works every time , now you just got to go get em , Good luck.
STACEY;
Some of the guys in the club have a beach up that way , they go thru the fence and fish this great beach , have not tried it yet , but I will , I think the best so far is little pico for me , gonna hit it this afternoon , You must still be working that area up there huh? If i were you I would put my gear in the truck and hit them spots after work , or at lunch time.

Good Post Joe. Thanks for all your help and instruction on the squid trip. I Had a lot of fun on and was suprised to see a few friends from the past. I got skunked myself, but was given a few filets to take home, thanks. I think I prefer the smaller squid for eating. I'll definetly go again if the trip were on a Friday or Saturday night
Mike: I've noticed a nice beach about 4 miles north of the lighthouse. It appears to be within the new state land area that the Hearst family has sold/donated.. looks like good perch area. Don't know if it would fall within upcoming MPA area by my observation from the roadway.

My cooking plans are basically the same as abalone. Give it a slight tenderizing treatment, roll it in crushed pistchios (however you spell them damned green nuts) and fry it up in hot olive oil. Although I do have a pasta sauce recipe that looks pretty tasty....

Squid;
Last night I took a 8 inch square piece, put it on a good solid surface , put a towel over it and wacked it with my ab hammer , cut into 1/2 in strips and rolled it in some garlic salt, deep fried it , it was very good and tender.

Michele:

Great job! Please let us know when/if you have another squid trip planned. You've peaked my interest as I have little desire to take my little 22-footer out 35 miles at night. We pulled a few of those Humboldts on the beach in Baja two winters ago when they washed up. I'd be happy with just one!

Hello Mike,

We cut the steaks down the middle long ways, then make into about six smaller steaks.
When this is done, fillet about an 1/8 inch off each side, you wll notice on the outer skin side it will require a little more, the orange things will guide you, You can see the the difference in the meat color and texture. After this there should be no need for pounding.

Best regarrds,
Joseph Anderton

The Humbolt's went off on the first stop from 250-600 then the wind came up and it was hard work. The crew was great and kept fishing until around 6am so everyone had a chance to pull on a big squirt. I highly recommend a stout rod with at least 400yds of spectra ( I used a 5'-60# tuna stick with a TLD30II); the large glow squid bar with a lumilight, light stick or whatever and bring along some 1-2 lb rock cod weights to add in case the wind comes up. You get a lot of steaks out of one of these babies but you do work for it. Do not, I repeat do not pump the rod. And if the wind blows you will be doing the Squid Tango kinda like the Tuna Shuffle. Make the trip and have a good time. Thanks to eveyone at Virg's and the Admiral's crew for a fun and creative trip. Had a blast!
