Thanks for that Harrell,

Do you think they are here year-round? Might be a good thing to do on unsuccessful (sic) albacore exploritory runs. At the depth they're at I can't imagine that much light would get down there.. might be worth a shot in daylight. I'll see what Virg's has planned and may talk the boys about doing a private run.

Based on Michele's Info I get 35:00 and 121:27 which is 36NM on a 219 heading. The chart shows this at 227 fathoms inside the Santa Lucia Bank.

Take a closer look at those Cachuma and Lopez trout you are catching. We are seeing them with multiple slashes across the bodies that look like cormorant bites. Some were as deep as the stomach cavity. Looks like our fishing dollars are doing a good job feeding the birds.

Rory, call me @ 704-2084. If I had the #'s I would post them, but I don't. I can give you the # of the person who has them though. Or look at a map and go to the high spot that is 1362 feet or 227 fathoms inside of Santa Lucia Bank. They are right on the highest spot.

The squid trip has been cancelled for tonight. Michele on future trips that you don't make the required minimum # of people @ the $78 rate I wouldn't mind splitting the cost with other passengers to make up the difference,ie 12 @ $100 or so. Sure beats 1 mile a gallon running on our own. Weather looks very nice for tonight.

Jeff - unfortunately, we don't have close-by canyons like other places to. Therefore, we have to run farther, 36 miles to be exact. We pretty much break even doing squid trips, but like you guys, we just like going fishing for something.

Limited load is 20 people on the Princess. We need 5 more people by noon or the trip will be canceled. We have to cancel early enough to let people from out of town know. We only have 10 to go now, we need at least 15. Weather looks great.

I believe Michelle said that they were running a limited load, maybe 12 people I think. I'd pay more for a limited load run any time. Also, $78 bucks is pretty much inline with any rockfish run.

In this day and age with the price of fuel, etc., anything to do with a boat for $78 bucks seems pretty reasonable. Like Caster stated, I know I couldn't even haul the big Whaler to Morro and back for $78 bucks let alone run it!

78$ to squid fish.WOW. Monterey has trips for 45$, Dana Point charges 35$, Mission Bay and San Diego are 35$ as well. This seems very steep does anyone agree?

Friends:

Two additional points ...

1. Some of you might claim that Tom Hafer was just pushing for these changes to help his own employment and fishing livlihood. NOT SO! Tom has been working with all of us on the recreational side to work for changes in these no-fish zones. The changes proposed at Pt. Buchon are huge for recreational fishermen ... and not that important to commercial fishermen ... This recent battle has been one where commercials and recreationals have worked side by side to fight the F&G Commission.

2. I don't want any of you to think that only commercial fishermen have been pushing for these changes. A big contingent of recreational fishermen have been at all of these Commission meetings during the last year and have helped fight this battle. Our CCFCC has been very active in attending these meetings and lobbying the DFG and Commission. The only reason I single out Tom Hafer ... is because he kept fighting this battle even when it appeared very clear that it was a lost battle. HE WOULD NOT GIVE UP. Atta boy, Tom.

Friends:

I got a DIFFERENT report from Arcada. I heard that only 3 members were present and the newest member of the Commission abstained on the vote about changes to the southern region of the Central Coast MLPA process.

Here are the crucial changes that RICHARD ROGERS changed his opinion on ... and he is the swing vote.

Fishermen will get additional fishing area at

1. Big Sur
2. Pt. Buchon
3. South of Purisma

The changes at Pt. Buchon are huge for us recreational fishermen. It looks like we may get three crucial concessions in the proposed MLPA. Although it is not a done-deal ... it looks like the April vote is leaning our way ... unless the enviros jump all over Richard Rogers and get him to do another 180 ... which he has done before.

BIG THANKS ARE IN ORDER.

Bob Hather pointed out some of the visual "point men" or those who got the publicity. The main people who deserve credit are TOM HAFER, BILL JAMES AND BEN SLEETER.

For those of you who were not there, poor Tom Hafer got crushed at the August meeting in 2006 when three members of the Commission voted against all of his proposed changes for our area. It was a dark day when we all walked out of that room in Monterey. Most people would have thrown in the white-towel. Not Tom ... THIS GUY IS A BULLDOG.

Tom and Jeremiah O'Brien marshalled the MB troops and Bill James started marshalling the Port San Luis Troops. Tom Hafer was down at Santa Monica ... and kept up his lobbying for changes in our area. Once again he got shot down. The Commission voted against him on a 3-2 vote. Bill James helped get a bunch of guys down to Santa Monica to push for changes. Richard Rogers would not budge on his hard-line view.

There was a another Commission meeting a month ago in Monterey (or was it Santa Cruz). Richard Rogers still wouldn't budge ... but TOM HAFER kept chewing on his leg.

Finally, these efforts paid off today. Tom and others pushed again for changes to the size and location of no-fish reserves in our southern region. FINALLY RICHARD ROGERS SAW THE LIGHT. Even John Ugoretz seemed to bend and agree to the changes.

TOM HAFER ... WE ALL OWE YOU A BIG DEBT OF GRATITUDE ... YOU ARE A BULLDOG. Bill James, Ben Sleeter, all the people of the CFC, Coastside, and even Tom Raftican ... you all pulled together and we got a victory ...

I hope it all hangs together for the final vote in April. That will be when the Commission makes their final decision.

At today's Fish and Game Commission meeting there were only four commissioneers, so a final decision on the boundries on the MPAs was postponed until April. The vote was 2 to 2. Coastside and United Anglers were big advacates for us by presenting a proposed shift in some of the boundries that would give us more fishing oportunity at Buchon by shifting the MPA 1 1/2 mile to the south, and more at Prisma and Sur. Thanks to Ben Sleeter and Dan Wolford of Coastside for the mapping and Tom Raftican of UA for presenting the proposals.

Clark

Plz do post a report; I plan on going Cachuma Saturday/maybe Sunday and will do same, provided I can chew through the restaints. I used to fish Chuma lots for bass as a kid, did well. Plastic worms on Carolina rig or trolling rapalas/hellbenders. Island at South end a good spot, as is the dropoff south of the marina at west side. Not so much experience with trout.

If nothing else a good way to get out for a while. Pre-flame: practice and gear stretching for upcoming salmon/RF at PSL/MB. Hope this year the salmon are bigger than the trout. Cloud out

Paul, I think you are an idiot for calling anyone else an idiot on this page. How about we are all entitled to our opinions and ANYONE who thinks they have this whole situation pegged is a fool. Don't be so naive to think that there is only one dynamic to all of the different fish, areas, politics, funding, seasons, closures....ect.... and that you know what is right and what isn't. Maybe if that guy fished from a boat, he'd understand you, and maybe if you fished his exact spots you'd understand him. Don't be a dick.

I posted a little blurp below the Virg's article, Bob I hope you don't mind I cut and pasted some stuff you had posted earlier.

Whats happing to Virgs and the recreational sportfishing industry is such a crock. Our near shore fishery has never been healthier. A comprehensive rockfish assessment off our local waters, peer reviewed and published in CalCOFI, found that no decline in rockfish was observed over the past 30 years except for the bocaccio, a warmer-water fish. The article omitted to mention the reason catches are down is because most commercial fishing is now banned along our coast and sportfishing is restricted to seven months. Of the 19 nearshore species of rockfish, NONE ARE CONSIDERED TO BE OVERFISHED! And here is the real kicker, Guess who is funding the Marine Life Protection Act its the Lucile Pacakard Foundation. That is like Oil Companies funding a process to determine if California should have offshore drilling.

There is an article in the Tribune about Virg's operation. It's amazing how Virg's still stays open in the face of all the unwarranted restrictions. If you read the article on line you can post a comment at the bottom of the article.

Mr. Walt Driesbach,

I think you are an idiot. You say you don't have a boat or fish from one, yet you make a bold claim that "commercial near shore vertical fishing for the live fishery is just cleaning out the fish". How in the hell could you have any accurate knowledge of such things? Or is this simply emotional speculation on your part? I will not even begin to counter-argue this point with you, because you clearly display your ignorance in your statements. I will say, however, that although you are entitled to your own opinions, you should not make outright statements about a fishery you know nothing about.

Clark--follow-up

Right across from the cachuma marina along the white cliff trolling 50-70 pulls down has been the best spot for me. Have caught both trout and schoolie-size LM bass in that area.

Apparently I may need to join the support group. These acts of desparation have occured more than once.

Yes I tried my riggers but switched back to weights--too many problems. Most significant were release clips that dont (on that size fish), and constant depth adjustment. I didnt try smaller clips for other reasons.

I use real small chrome crocodiles and 2-6 oz weight (no flasher or cow-bells) and have done well on trout to 18" at cachuma. I have seen lots of other guys with lots of jewelry on the line taht aslo seem to do well. I just would rather not have all that stuff in the way.

BTW almost all the trout I have caught in either cachuma or lopez have had parasites hanging off the sides--disgusting. None kept. Anyone know what the deal is? Cloud out

Clark,

Fishing fresh-water is a clear act of desperation. You need help! I'm thinking of forming a support group in the near future.
I'll be Squiding when Virg's has their next trip.
I don't know much about trout, but I generally troll as slow as it goes using leaded line 3-5 colors out with very small spoons.

good luck
