Ok, lets get the whole story.i was in ventura sat night.. i arrived in ventura 4:30 saturday afternoon the reason i got threre at 430 was to assure myself a spot on the wall.. As you all know it does not get dark until 730ish. we start pulling hoop nets at around this time, by 930 we had caught 10 quality bugs. at this time two zodiacs arrive with a total of 6 divers. My hoop nets are set approx. 10 feet from the wall and i am taking approx. 100 feet of the wall total. these divers proceed with bright lights in between my hoop nets and the wall. from 930 on i did not catch a single bug. I believe that there should be some edicut between fishermen and i believe there should be some common courtesy among both parts.. -Just my two cents- |

All you divers out there just reminded me I have a bunch of gear that was given to me by a buddy. Our boat sank, so we scratched the scuba dreams for now. Just need to clear some room in the garage, so I want to sell it. Any takers? |

The boat registration will begin with NV not CF,it's a White center console with a white spray skirt around the front railing, the total catch was lots of shorts(no suprise that the guy had cleaned the place out),but one of the young skinny freedivers in our group got his limit by working the deep crevices,he was really good at it. Bloody decks forever!! |

Now about the Lobster diving trip, arrived at the launch ramp in Ventura and the 7 of us suited-up and jumped in 2 Zodiak inflatables and headed out to the breakwater. When we approached the area we noticed there were lighted bouys from one end of the jetty to the other end and we were thinking that these are commercial traps, but before we even got into the water some crazy nut and his buddy drove up to us at about 40knots and started yelling and screaming f--ck you and that if we got within 6' of his "hoopnets" he would shoot us with his speargun and run us over! We couldn't believe this was a sport fisherman and he actually had his entire limit of 10 hoopnets out in the water. This guy was totally out of control running up and down the jetty at 30-40 knots pulling his nets while divers(not just our group) were in the water.we noticed the boat was registered in Nevada so we took down the number to give to the Harbor patrol when we got back. The night got worse when the crazyman drove over the top of one in our group and bow and head collided, the diver was able to get into the inflatable and was obviously done for the night. We pulled out and headed for the ramp to tell our story to the Harbor patrol who was already waiting for us,we told him everything that had happend and he said to us " this guy has been living in his camper here at the launch ramp and hoopnetting every day for 6weeks and we have problems with him every day!" Well after hearing that we thought this was the last straw for the Psycho and he was going down, the Coast guard the harbor patrol and 2 Ventura Police cars(that's 9 Officers) confronted him on land and sea and LET HIM GO! they said they didn't see him do it, so no ticket or arrest... I'm thinking this guy is selling his catch and where is Fish and game? the Coast guard said that he brings in 14 Bugs every day and there of length. The Pshcho says he just does this for fun and that he is giving the Bugs away every day. YEA RIGHT!! we can only hope that Fish and game is working on some of sting operation or ? Bloody decks forever!! |

Friends: Here is the CCFCC letter to Commission: CCFCC Central Coast Fisheries Conservation Coalition 1326 Chorro Street San Luis Obispo, California 93401 (805)544-2424 March 19, 2007 California Fish and Game Commission Mr. Richard B. Rogers, Vice President Mr. Jim Kellogg, Member Ms. Cindy Gustafson, Member Mr. R. Judd Hanna, Member Mr. John Carlson, Jr., Executive Director 1416 Ninth Street Sacramento, California 95814 Dear Commissioners and Executive Director: Enclosed please find important documents relating to nearshore rockfish along the Central Coast. This material should be carefully studied before any decision about MPAs along the Central Coast. Please find enclosed: 1. Press release concerning 25-year study of rockfish along the Central Coast of California. 2. Complete report of 25-year rockfish study published in CalCOFI in December of 2006. 3. Front page article about rockfish study in San Luis Obispo Tribune on March 18, 2007. Resources Secretary Mike Chrisman promised citizens of the Central Coast that the “best available science” would be used in making decisions about MPAs along the Central Coast. The 25-year rockfish study included herewith is not just the “best available science” about rockfish along the Central Coast; it is the only comprehensive data and study about rockfish on the Central Coast. It is important to note that one of the authors of this report (Deb Wilson-Vandenberg) is a member of the staff of Fish & Game. Another author (Dean Wendt) is a member of the Science Advisory Team (SAT) that set guidelines for size and frequency of marine reserves along the Central Coast under the MLPA. Most of this crucial data was in the possession of Fish & Game for decades and was not considered in the current MLPA process. A “rough draft” of the final published report included herewith was in the hands of Fish & Game staff all during the current MLPA process. All of the data in this report was available to the SAT, Blue Ribbon Task Force (BRTF) and Fish & Game. However, none of this material was considered by any of these groups in their MLPA work. The SAT established minimum size and frequency of marine reserves based on theory only. Now it appears from this study that no additional MPAs are warranted. There are no nearshore species of fish that need the protection of marine reserves along the Central Coast. The data in this report raises a serious question as to whether any new MPAs are necessary along the Central Coast. At a bare minimum, this Commission should direct the following questions to John Ugoretz and the Department of Fish & Game: 1. Why wasn’t the rockfish data found in the CalCOFI report considered by the SAT, BRTF and Fish & Game in determining whether there should be any MPAs along the Central Coast? 2. Why wasn’t this data and report supplied to Commission members to assist them in making decisions about the MLPA? 3. Why was “theory” used as justification for MPAs by the SAT when hard data was available showing that more marine reserves are not justified? 4. Shouldn’t the MLPA “fast-track” process be put on hold while the Central Coast stakeholders group, SAT, BRTF and Department of Fish & Game consider this “best available science”? Before any decision-making on April 13, 2007 (the next Commission meeting), concerned citizens of the Central Coast would like the above questions answered. This data has been available for a long time and no one should suggest that it arrives too late to be considered. This CalCOFI report is the best available science about nearshore rockfish and should be considered before any decisions about MPAs on the Central Coast. Sincerely, Melvin A. de la Motte, Jr. President of the CCFCC P.S. Executive Director Carlson: Please make this letter and other enclosures a part of the “Administrative Record” of the Commission. Please also make copies of this letter and three enclosures for each of the Commission members. Thank you. CC: Mike Chrisman, Resources Agency Secretary Ryan Broddrick, Director of Fish & Game Department John Ugoretz |

Friends: The information in the rockfish study on the front page of Tribune on Sunday has been available to F&G and the Commission and all other members involved in the MLPA process. Yet, they did not use any of this information. This is the "best available science" on the subject. In stead they used theoretical models to determine size and amount of needed marine reserves (no-fish reserves). If they had considered the information in this study, they would have seen that no MPAs are necessary along the Central Coast. Everyone should write a letter to the Commission at the following address asking why the Commission has not considered the "best available science" ... that being the recently published rockfish study in the CalCOFI Journal. If they receive a barrage of letters to this effect, they will be put on the spot of answering why they violated their own rules compelling them to use the "best available science." Oh by the way ... this report was only PUBLISHED in December, but the information has been available to DFG and the Blue Ribbon Panel and the Science Advisory Team for a long time. In the following posting, I will reprint our letter to the Commission on this subject. They use to allow attachments to this web site, but now I cannot find out how to do it ... so I will just copy it right into the posting. Here is the address of the Fish and Game Commission: California Fish and Game Commission 1416 Ninth Street Sacramento, CA 95814 Go get em! Mel |

Like the rest of you, I am going nuts waiting for salmon season to start. I went up to Moss Landing last weekend to scope out the facilities there and to talk to the locals. I have not fished there before, but I am looking forward to trying it this year. Well, the boat is totally ready and all my salmon gear is fresh and organized. Only three weeks until we can be out there again. I wish everyone lots of fish, but most of all, I wish you all peace, love and happiness. See you out there. Will |

Per Diablo. The Source... A blocking high in the Bering Sea is the most reliable indicator of dry weather in Central and Southern California. Fronts in conjunction with the deep Gulf of Alaska low will move northeastward through the Pacific Northwest while high pressure remains stationary across California. This is the same pattern that we saw developed during November and December with record amounts of rainfall across the Pacific Northwest while Central California was below normal precipitation. So far, this rain season could be one of the driest on record. During the 1991 rain season almost 13" of precipitation was recoded during March of 1991 "miracle rains f March". by this date the average rainfall for Diablo Canyon over the last 30 years is 18.9". This rain season we have recorded only 8.18", which is 43% of normal. Total precipitation at the DCPP Ocean Lab for this rain season (1 July 2006 through 07 March 2007) was 8.18 inches. (1 July 2005 through 30 June 2006) was 23.48 inches. 1 July 2004 through 29 June 2005) was 35.71 inches. 1 July 2003 through 30 June 2004) was 14.22 Inches. July 2002 through 30 June 2003) was 16.75 Inches. 1 July 2001 through 30 June 2002) was 12.14 Inches. (1 July 2000 through 30 June 2001) was 19.31 Inches. (1 July 1999 through 30 June 2000) was 22.80 Inches. (1 July 1998 through 30 June 1999) was 16.44 Inches. (1 July 1997 through 30 June 1998) was 44.06 Inches. (1 July 1996 through 30 June 1997) was 29.67 Inches. (1 July 1995 through 30 June 1996) was 21.47 Inches. (1 July 1994 through 30 June 1995) was 42.58 Inches. (1 July 1993 through 30 June 1994) was 13.76 Inches. 1 July 1992 through 30 June 1993) was 28.50 Inches. 1 July 1991 through 30 June 1992) was 22.41 Inches. (1 July 1990 through 30 June 1991) was 18.67 Inches. *(1 July 1989 through 30 June 1990) was 7.89 Inches. *(1 July 1988 through 20 June 1989) was 15.61 Inches. |

Virg's is looking for someone to help with general maint. in Ventura this week at the boat yard, and back here afterward. It's pretty basic stuff, you don't have to have much experience in anything in particular, ecxept no slackers. You could even take your pay out in fishing trips and get more mileage out of it. You get more virg's dollars per US dollars. Contact John or Michele. 772-1222 |

Regarding the post about the Avet reels, on the Davis Boats 10 day trip several of us used them and every one stopped working because when the salt water is left to crystalize they bind up. They need to be washed in fresh water every day. We didn't know that until the repair folks at Avet told us. Otherwise they are great reels. Bob |

Friends: Let me briefly explain why this Cal Poly report is so very important. There are two big factors that REDUCE OUR FISHING OPPORTUNITY. As you know, we will only be allowed to fish for bottom fish along our coast for 7 months each year for 2007 and 2008. One factor is a low quota for canary rockfish. This is a federally regulated species AND IS NOT CONSIDERED A NEARSHORE SPECIES. This is a federal issue and there will be a NOAA Fisheries stock survey on canary rockfish completed this year. Hopefully, it will show we are well on the way to rebuilding this "overfished" species. The Cal Poly study does not have an impact on this issue. THE SECOND BIG ISSUE is the statewide quota for "nearshore rockfish". There are 19 species of nearshore rockfish listed in the Nearshore Fisheries Management Plan (NFMP) which must be monitored and regulated by Fish & Game. HOWEVER, when the state is considered "data poor" concerning the status of these 19 nearshore fish, then the law compels the state to REDUCE THE QUOTA BY 50%!!!!!!! That is why our fishing "season" has been severely reduced. The CCFCC has been fighting for years to get the state to gather data and get out of this "data poor" condition. THIS CAL POLY REPORT IS VALUABLE IN MOVING THE STATE OUT OF THE DATA POOR CONDITION. Now we need Fish & Game to assimilate this study into their data bank. We are continuing to lobby Fish & Game to get us out of this data poor condition. We also need this study to get statewide publicity. We are hopeful that the Tribune will do a study on this important study. Mel |

Friends: Below is a press release about the Cal Poly 25-year Nearshore Rockfish study published in December in a prestigous marine science journal (CalCOFI). We want this study to get a lot of publicity because it is so favorable to fishing interests. I wanted to attach it, but see that the "attachments" feature has been deleted on this web site. Mel FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE STUDY SHOWS NEARSHORE ROCKFISH ON THE CENTRAL COAST ARE NOT IN DECLINE San Luis Obispo, CA: March 7, 2007 - A 25-year study published in the December 2006 edition of California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) concludes that nearshore rockfish along the Central Coast of California are not in decline. Fishermen along the Central Coast are elated with the results according to Darby Neil of Virg’s Sportfishing. “It’s good to finally have the scientists agreeing with what fishermen have been saying for years.” Steve Moore, owner of Patriot Sportfishing said, “This is fantastic news for fishermen. The government has been cutting our fishing opportunity without any scientific data. Now we have the data and it proves what we have always known, the fish are abundant along our coast.” Nine marine scientists collaborated in this rockfish report, including professors from California Polytechnic State University, staff of the California Department of Fish & Game and a marine biologist with Tenera Environmental, Inc. Lead author Dr. John Stephens says, “This is the first publication of nearshore rockfish research on the Central Coast and covers 25 plus years. We were surprised that there was not much change from the data collected in |
