I was introduced to using single action reels while trolling for salmon earlier this week. unfortunately, I got skunked and was unable to use them on a fish. Any opinions on their use?

My fish had one 6" 'chovy in its belly. Strange, but I didn't hear of a single fish caught on bait. We fished bait on one rig for most of the day saturday, and about half of sunday and it never was touched. Our only fish came on red flasher purple hoochie. Did anyone have a hit on bait?

I agree with anchovies. The fish we caught next to the bait ball had several 3-4 inch anchovies in the stomach.

Re: Bait

Couple years ago was able to actually see what one bait ball was....a massive shoal of brown rockfish (bolina) fry about 1/2" each. Could be anything. This time of year tho isnt it chovie fry most of the time? I dunno.

Hey, when you guys are metering bait fish out there, what is it? What's in season right now? Maks and sardines aren't around are they? Anyway, I figured it was just smelt but wondered if there was something else out there. Hope the bite picks up and the wind lays down!

I am repowering my striper with a new HONDA. So i am going to part out my FITCH for parts.
This 2000 225 FITCH lost a cylinder. It was still running when it did so, and still ran at the boat shop when they found the hole in the lower cylinder.

Everything is in working condition except for the powerhead.

If any of you need any kind of parts please e-mail me at svue@apexmoto.com for part request.

Everything is for sale, rigging, gauges, controls, trim, etc...
It is a 25" shaft.

Today's Telegram Tribune on the proposed reserves:

"Officials say...the the reserves do not target popular fishing spots and the reserves would only limit a small number of recreational angling trips for rockfish and salmon."

Easily one of the more outrageous things ever put into print.

Mike on the Onieda B took us up to Monterey for the opener, It was a nice weekend but the fishing was a little slow we ended up with two salmon on Saturday, one was 12.6 lb and the other was a nice 24.7 lbs on a green crocodile and RSK anchovy. Sunday we got one more 12.2 lb, all came about 85 feet down in 250ft of water off point Pinos

Hope things pick up soon

Thanks Mike and Dave

The engine is a 2001 Evinrude 250. The engine is way to new to scrap, I'm hoping it is just the starter or something simple. I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

Also, fished the opener for nada, similar to same reports others have made, however that is not the point of this post. The point being I fished the opener with two (2) downriggers in tact. Great ending to my quest seeking a belt for my Scotty downrigger the began Thursday. Jerry Cottrell made it happen. Stopped in at this new bait/tackle and marine shop on the Embarcadero, told him my dilemna, he said there might be one around call me Friday at 10am. Sure enough I walked in and there he had it!! I asked how much I owed him, he shrugged and said "don't worry about it"..Needless to say, I was greatly appreciative, and it had nothing to do with cost$$, just the fact he made it a point to check it out...KUDOS for Jerry, I am sure others would echo the same. Good luck on his new venture, he will have my business without question. I urge other do the same. And on one last note, an honorable mention to Gary Foskie who offered up a belt to get me by too-...You both made my week and make me proud. Thank you-

Fished Morro Bay today. Nice enough weather. Fished from the ab farm to in front of the rock. Didn't meter much bait but some balls where found by others. Didn't hear of many fish being caught. We did manage to get one keeper late afternon in front of the rock in about 180 ft of water, down about 95 feet on a purple haze hootchie. Had an earlier hit on a green apex. We caught the one fish next to a large bait ball - the only one we found all day. Not many boats out today, maybe a dozen or so.

Fished between the front of the rock and whale rock from 7-1, no take downs, very little bait and a seized motor...other than that, beautiful day on the water.

Thank god for the kicker! Cross your fingers for me, lets hope the engine problem is minor...

Fished Moss for the opener for one 15#er. Tried the canyon first and then worked our way down to the Soldier's club. Decided to chase radio fish at (10:30)Cyress and it paid off. Only had one other fish on during the day. Did not get to the hot spot (Cypress)until late, the bite was just about over. Called it a day at 1:00 due to Easter. If you were at Cypress early in the morning your chances were good at catching at least 3-4 fish. I think that there are plenty of fish around but you have to work for them.

If anyone is interested I have a pair of PENN 620's DOWNRIGGERS with swivel bases for sale. $500.00 You can call at (805)689-3311

Fished opener from PSL for two fish. First fish 19 lb. gilled/gutted 90 ft. down in 140 ft. water down and out from the red light. Second fish was a last min. fish while pulling the gear before heading in, 80 ft. down in 90 ft of water inside and up from the red light. Smallish fish @ 22 in. but helped since we have four onboard. Both fish came on white spoons. Not red hot but a great way to start the season.

Fished all morning off the rock at Morro Bay for only one take down on the green Apex, right when I was not paying attention (when else?) There were a few fish around. We saw Woody lose a double at about 12:30. Green Apex again at 90 feet. It was nice to be out there again. We went out before dawn and got wet early in my skiff, but it ended up beautiful.
Be back out later. Happy Easter to all.

Left at 1:30 a.m. for moss. We were the first to launch at woodwards. We looked for bait for an hour before the sun came up but saw nothing promising. Started to troll till 8:30 for one possible knock down. Heard on the radio about something down at Cypress point. We pulled the gear and ran the 12 miles. Stayed down there until 1:00 p.m. We managed 5 fish for the three of us between 10 and 15 lbs. Because of opening day jitters, we farmed 4 due to a comedy of errors. A little choppy in the morning but coming in was a 30 mph trip back to moss. Fish and boat cleaned at 5:30 for a loooong day. Just when F & G pulled up to us we got hit and put a nice one in the box in front of them. They were very cool and checked licenses and hooks and moved on. Not a lot of bait up there yet but some fish seem to be moving into the bay. Give it a few weeks and it may go off. 1000 boats on the water and many got skunked or just one or two if lucky. May have to try it again next weekend.

Fished out of MB today, but couldn't put one on the deck for the opener. We lost a large fish at the net in 167ft just north of the Rock fishing a green Apex 90ft down the wire.We had one other quick release in the exact same spot on the previous pass on the same lure.I did not see a single baitball or metermark.Fish and game checked our licenses and had us pull one line to check the hooks, but they were very cool and it was no hassle..I'll be back out tomorrow of the weather cooperates...jeff

We put the boat on a ball at PSL on Friday. Left port this am around 5:30 heading below the red light in 130' of water. Worked that for an hour, picked up one legal salmon on a green apex down 95'and had 2 other take downs. Thought it was going to be a short day but it laid down 'til 11:30 and got bumpy. Will try again tomorrow.

Fished out of MB for the polecat, tried every trick in the book, otherwise a nice day, and the boat performed well. Took a run down to Hazards to watch the backside of some nice surf and metered good hits above the rocks. Gonna try again tomorrow cause we still have plenty of gas.

We had an uneventful day today out of Morro Bay. We left at dark and ran out at 9 kts for 7 mi and began trolling over Church rock in 400 ft of water. Ther was one big bait school near there but no salmon. We heard of about 3 salmon caught off Morro Rock in 160 ft of water by about 9 am so went moved in. Then the Fish and game gave me a ticket for forgeting my my license in the car. They were very nice about it and said there was a way I could file for a claim for the the cup holder they broke entering the boat. We had one bite before quiting at 11:30. The water is very clean and lacks bait but I heard the bait was thick this morming in 180ft of water off of Pt Sal.

Took a short shake down outside the harbor today, new motor so didn't want too many surprises. metered some bait straight out .
had to back down the idle screw a bit to get a troll of 3mph.
Good luck to all tomorrow!!!!
