Greetings,
Fished PSL in the skiff today with Gordon. Still no bait, so we got a bag of chovies and a tray of squid. Headed around the breakwater a little after 6 a.m. with very little swell and slight wind chop...the ocean just got nicer as the day went on!
Drifted the Pea Patch in 20' to 60' of water until noon. No keeper lings, but couple random rockfish, including bolina, black, grassy, red, and gophers. Oh yea, did catch 1 halibut...but it was a big one, 37 inches and 24 pounds on my buddies hand scale! It was a fattie. It hit a whole squid in 25' of water as we approached the kelpline...epic battle around the kelp stringers!!! My biggest California halibut to date. I was a very happy fisherman today:-) I'll be out again tomorrow.
did anyone hear if Deke got bait today?
I heard of no salmon captured, nor did the fish-checker see any. Rockfishing was good for those in deeper water (60-100').
Hopefully find we'll another barn door tomorrow.
best fishes,
steve

Fished out of MB today for excellent rockfish action off of Point Estero. We had 3 limits of quality mixed reds and rockfish in 65-85ft using #2oz. leadhead/swimbaits or 4oz white jigs tipped with squid. One of my passengers who was a first time fisherman caught a 27" ling on our first drift. We trolled for salmon on the way home for nada, but I did see a lot more bait from the red buoy all the way to the harbor entrance...We'll be back out on Monday....jeff

I do realize that sometimes people just happen to fish the same area at the same time, but the display that I witnessed on Thurs. by an individual boat was just rediculous. Speaking of this individual, I really think that unless it is an MLPA area-to-be, we should all try to fish around and spread out the pressure instead of fishing the same spot day in and day out untill there is nothing there.

I hope everyone knows I am always happy to share numbers. Please just call me on 19a. I do have a few spots that I like to fish only when I have special trips. If you find them yourself then good job, fish 'em however you like. I feel that I should be allowed to keep a couple of spots under my hat if I choose, so please just call me first before following along. Thanks.

Michele on Fiesta.

There was plenty of water at PSL to launch this morning. We fished for salmon today thru 2:00 for nothing, but there were whales all aound us all day and large groups of seals. We started in 135 ft. water out from the light house where we saw surface bait. went out to 280 ft. and down and back in. Thre water was flat and the wind was light in the afternoon. We will be back tommorrow. good luck to all, Sheryl

Bait, We have been getting 3-5" smelt with a throw net in the back bay at the end of Doris st. in Los Osos go at nearly high tide.
They work better than tray chovies will stay on the hook.

Did a field trip today on the Pacific Horizon. Drug the trawl net from SL Creek to the end of Cal Poly pier twice for not much! No bait what so ever or halibut. Did get a bunch of sand dabs and spot prawns. Also got a half dozen 3-4" lingcod! They were very cool.
Deke has been looking for bait every morning this week and has yet to find any. He will be looking again tomorrow.
Sal fished Purisma for pretty slow fishing. Ended a slow day with almost limits for everyone on board. Dusty said rockfishing has been the slowest he's seen it in 12 years. He's only limited 5 of 19 trips! It might be the really cold water.
I'll be fishing Sat-Monday. Hope to target buts, but may go after salmon if there are a few around.
lat,
steve

I could not stand it any longer and played hooky this afternoon in Morro Bay. The water was flat and there was no wind. I went hard core for salmon for nothing. Water was super clear and cold. I found some bait at 100 feet. Next weekend it will be rock fish only!

Fished out of MB this morn, ran south to Buchon for some fair sized reds and one 20" cabezon, drifted in close and it was blues (switched to trout poles great fun), then hit Hazards on the way in
Got one 29" ling and a 5lb red to finish out three limits, water calm, could run flat out.

A real nice day fishing! looks like summer is finally here!

Mike,
I'm sure he is refering to Piedras Blancas lighthouse, north of San Simeon. Another few miles north of that there are massive reefs with lunker rockfish. See you out there.

Tim,
I will check current regs and make another post.
As I recall there was an issue involving freshwater fishermen using corn to attract fish and it was found that they could not digest the corn so as a result they formed a regulation that banned prossesed foods from being used in all state waters. Maybe the preservatives and the loss of fish? Hell i don`t know.
I would call the DFG and ask them. Post when you find out. thanks

Geeezuz!..we need a few more "Mike's" on the board!

Bodean,
Your response peaked my interest. Never heard that one before so I went looking. DFG 27.05 states chumming is legal as is the use of live bait for chum. Looking in Fish and Game Code, I am unable to find any reference. Can you point me in any direction to find the facts? Using crushed up dry cat food in very small amounts has been a 'yakkers tool for drawing and making bait.

Just schoolies that were soo thick the sardines had the anchovies pinned to the bottom so we just stayed about 5-10 ft from the surface. The sardines for some reason usually take the sabiki rigs in their mouth or get snagged by another hooked sardine, note..the smaller the sabiki the better the catch.. ie the fly on the sabiki rig itself...I think 14s or 16s is the size I use. I have never used cat food but i bet it helps.

Mike Dreyfus,
Welcome! Morro Bay is a relatively easy launch. Be aware of the surge at the launch ramp on an incoming or outgoing tide. The ramp use is free, parking might be tight on the 3 day weekend but if you're real early you'll probably be alright. A run to San Simeon/Piedras Blancas would probably be fine in the early a.m. It's downhill back to Morro Bay when the winds come up at about 10-11:00 a.m.

Can't really speak to the Salmon catch as I haven't made the attempt yet. It sounds like it has been spotty at best but someone here with more knowledge will chime in I'm sure. You'll have no problem stickin' some quality Rockfish up north or even 6-7 miles straight out of the harbor mouth at or near Pt. Buchon. Don't worry about the MPA's yet, they're not in effect until the Fat Lady sings. Bring your 5" & 7" swimtails and 3-4oz leadheads and be ready for some nice fish. We're allowed to fish 0-40 fathoms and leave the Canaries in the water!

Here's John Lindsay's local Diablo Canyon forecast that just came in.

Good Luck!

================== DCPP Weather Forecast for Wednesday 05/23/07 ===================

SEA/SWELL:

Today's 4 to 6 foot northwesterly (290°) swell (with a 7-10 second period)
will decrease to 3 to 5 feet on Thursday.

A 3 to 5 foot northwesterly (295°) sea/swell (with a 5-11 second period)
will develop along our coastline on Friday through Saturday. becoming
a 4 to 6 foot northwesterly (285°) swell on Sunday through Tuesday.

Combined with this northwesterly sea/swell will be a 1 to 3 foot southern
hemisphere (225°) swell (with a 15-17 second period) which will continue
through Thursday, increasing to 2 to 3 feet (with a 15-18 second period)
on Friday through Sunday. This southern hemisphere (225°) swell will
further build to 2 to 4 feet (with a 14-20 second period) on Monday
through Tuesday.

ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION:

A thermal low pressure trough is starting to take shape in the central
valley of California as a strong ridge of high pressure builds inland
to the north.

The onshore winds have slackened along our coastline today. This
condition will allow the marine layer to persist along our beaches this
afternoon. Elsewhere, our inland areas will remain clear and warm with
temperatures reaching to the low 90s today through Friday. The marine layer
will deepen and expand tonight through Friday morning along our beaches
and coastal valleys.

The northwesterly (onshore) winds will increase on Friday afternoon
through Sunday, producing some clearing along our beaches during the
afternoon hours. In addition, the strengthening onshore winds will reach
farther inland over the weekend resulting in a slow cooling trend for
our inland areas with Paso Robles reaching the mid 80s on Saturday
through Sunday.

The scenario of night and morning low cloudiness clearing to the ocean
with warm weather across the inland areas and cool weather along the coast
is expected to last through the Memorial Day followed by only minor
changes next week.

First time poster, short time reader. This is a great board! You guys all seem to have a more hospitable attitude towards each other then some other boards I've used. I live in the Santa Clarita area and trailer a 20' Skipjack. I normally launch out of San Pedro, Ventura, or Oxnard and fish/dive Catalina/Anacapa/Santa Cruz.
I love to fish for salmon when they come around my area, but that is not very often. There have been many recent reports of catches off Pitus Point/Rincon/Rock Island, which is local for me.
I am coming up to Morro on Friday night for an early Saturday departure, hoping to find larger numbers and sizes then we're getting locally. I have never launched or fished in the Central Cal area. Any tips about launch area, conditions, and areas to fish would be greatly appreciated!! I am aware of all the reserves......which unfortunatly seem to be quite extensive through whites rock area up to San Simeon. Not to mention the Point Buchon area. Not much left to fish is there?
Anyways, we want to target salmon, but rocks/lings/butts are always nice to.
I was planing on charging 5:00am up to San Simeon (wheather permitting). What are my chances of making it?
I look forward to reading your posts.

You guys can also use sabiki rigs and you can catch all the sardines you want..they also catch smelt and anchovies. Thats what I used last year outside of cayucos and got all we wanted ( half scoop) I was getting four sardines at a drop most of the time.

Thanks for the bait update, Jeff. I will be out there on Sunday and Monday trying for the salmon, if not before. I personally prefer the Johnny Bass for filleting and eating over most the other rockfish. I would be happy with a few of those..

Fished out of MB today in wicked fog that went from bad to worse...We started fishing rockfish up by the abalone farm north of Cayucos. The bite started off hot at 7:30,but fizzled by 8:45.We still put a bunch of 5-8lb reds in the cooler.Trolled for salmon on the way home, but only managed to pick a large johnny bass off the edge of a baitball....There were some really good bait marks and smaller baitballs on the surface (10-25ft)and right on the bottom out in front and north of the rock in 90-125ft.I`m hopeful that as more bait moves in to the bay the salmon will follow....jeff

Jim,

I'm interested to see a photo of your new boat. I have restored a couple of boats myself, and perhaps I could at least share some of the knowledge I have acquired with you. Tri-hulls are great for stability, however they can tend to pound a bit in a choppy sea, depending of course on the characteristics of the hull. I do like projects.... I'm sure my wife would agree!

Fished on Friday and Saturday, off the domes area both days, for some quality reds and a few legal lings. Saturday we tried off Cayucos for a flatty in the morning, but without live bait for the drift we just lacked the confidence needed, so we ran for the domes to make a day of it. The wind really howled in the afternoon, but with the sea anchor setup hanging off the bow we were able to keep the drift down to 1.5 kts. Hopefully I can master the throw net enough to make some bait in the bay before the flatty bite goes flat.

Regards,
Paul

I have bought a 21' aluminum boat. it was used by the coast guard in San Diego and is a tri-hull / looks like an older Whaler. Does anybody have any knowledge of these boats or hull designs. The boat is in great condition and I am not sure if it is worth putting the money into to finish. I can email a picture to anyone that my like to see it and give a little advice. I also built an aluminum Radon type cabin and a heavy duty aluminum transom bracket... It just needs paint and 15 grand in an outboard. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
