Jim;
I like this one because it is graphic, displays every 3 or 4 hours for a week and it displays in given areas. It seems to be as accurate as any forecast and better than most.

On the subject of returning bloated fish to the bottom:
I use a barbless crowbar hook. I tie the hook on in the crook, then through the eye of the hook and down to a 1# ball. I keep this on a rod with a spinning reel so I don't have to worry about backlashing. I run the hook down through the top lip, throw the rig in the water, and let the weight pull the fish down. When he is down far enough, a quick yank pulls the hook out and he is released. Hopefully they survive (at least some of them) and I feel better about the whole deal.

When we are having the big NW winds and SCA's, is there still usually an early morning window to fish?

Tossed back two cabazon just shy of the 18" size limit......told the biologist about it, then he laughed and said the limit is 15".......Oh well,

Here is a SST web site I like to use that is free. Go to the top left click on the fish and drag the fish to a specific spot, then click on the your port, that will get you the bearing, lat/lon and miles. You can also check other SST and chlorphyl shots by clicking to the box top middle.

Today's shot looks like a significant break out there inboard of the 34/122. It's obliterated by overcast but apparent. Lookin' like 60 degree water, too!

For those of you who have larger boats, a milk crate that is weighted down and tethered with a line is a great way to release bloated fish. But if you don’t want the extra stuff on your boat, try to have a needle that is cleaned with rubbing alcohol before you poke a fish. Just by jabbing with a knife or your hook can cause bacteria to kill the fish even though it makes it back to the bottom. I have a small Tupperware bowl that has a sponge soaked with rubbing alcohol that keeps the needle clean. I use a new sponge each trip. If I had the room the milk crate is the best way to go.

I think it is time to start our albacore watch !

According to the Navy composite there is probably 60 degree water at 34/122 or close to it which is about 100 miles out of Morro. The visible satellite is showing clear skies in that area now so if the timing is right we should get an SST of that area today.

Another way to keep a fish from floating is to poke a small hole behind both pectoral fins (side fins armpits)this will release any trapped air in the fish. Also gives the fish a chance to grow and you a chance to catch it again when its bigger.

To release unwanted or illegal fish; tie a barbless hook to your line and send the fish back down to the bottom. It will wiggle off an perhaps survive. You can also have a rig set-up for this purpose. Bend the hook open and this will help the fish get off! Tim

I fished Sunday out of Morro. Started early but my steering seized up and I hauled the boat home and repaired it. I was on the water again at noon and trolled for salmon for nothing. I headed up off Point Estero for some great rockfish at about 200 feet. I caught three giant canaries, which were released to the pecking seagulls. Too bad! I was using a 6 oz. Megabait to get down.

Fished Morro Bay from 5:30 till noon for salmon for nothing unless you count blues, mackrel and jelly fish. Had to go below 80 feet down on the troll to stop cathing the blues. Metered a lot of stuff out front in 180 feet of water but didn't school like regular bait so I suspect it was something else. Whales around putting on some nice displays. Nice ocean.

FISH report from the killer b,S
Took the boat out to make sure everything works , so we took some gear and grandson and friend, fished within three miles of the rock for 4 nice limits and two lings, just got done cleaning up fillets , total weight was 24# of fish not bad for a short trip.
The weather was great all day , wind started to come up as we were leaving 1400.
Some one around her knows how to catch those flatties , had 4 BIG ones at the cleaning tabel.
Also CASTER was great finally meeting you , see you on the water .

Released two small canaries, has anyone caught any greenlings?
I was trying to describe them to a newby we had on board today, last one I caught made a neon sign look dull.

Nikki J,
I sorta wondered about that when you first posted. I've heard of kids selling lemonade getting hammered for violating different codes and ordinances but then again, as convenient as your gig may have seemed, perhaps you stepped on the toes of some legitimate businesses?

Who took you down and for what reason?

Back from San Carlos Mexico. The fishing (catching) was slow but we did manage a 200 + Blue Marlin and some nice Dorado to 40 pounds.

Jim: The forecasts all indicate wind this afternoon through most of the week. You may get a few hours early monday but there is a minus tide at 7:33 so Morro is your best bet.

Fished PSL today, couldn't launch until 8am due to low tide, barely could then. Tried bouncing balls for butts at the Pea Patch. Caught 2 lings (short) a blue and a greeling. No hits from the butts, heard a few have been caught there past couple of days drifting chovies. Deke didn't have any bait today. Fished for awhile for rockcod, caught a few then tried for Salmon with no luck. Nice day till 2 or 3 when the wind came up. Better luck next time.

fished solo on the tide swing early for two salmon in front of the rock in 180'. both nice fish, one 22lbs dressed, the other lost to the dogs just ten feet from the boat. lots of bait balled up early but later it kinda dispersed because of all the seals around. red hot spot /purple haze 80'otw did the trick. water was sloppy early.
the fish was stuffed with oversize anchovies.

Friends: You've got to love our Central Coast. Best rockfishing anywhere ... bar none!

95% of the time I fish on my own boat ... and love scouting the whole central coast for new fishing holes.

But, I also love to jump on a Patriot or Virg's boat to let someone else do all the work (except the fishing) .... I really love all the captains, deck hands and cooks at both landings ... great people!

Yesterday I jumped on a long-range boat with Dustin out at Patriot Sportfishing. All the landing staff also jumped on the boat for a big party. Roger York was there, Sal was there fishing and Frank ... and Leo ... and Big Dan Barrios ... and all the local fishermen. Everyone pulled in limits of rockfish ... mainly reds, bolina and cabezons. I think almost everyone got limits of lings as well ... It was a great time with lots of comraderie and fun ...

Fishing on our Central Coast is just fine. If we could just keep the government out of our lives we would be just fine ... Maybe the rest of the world's oceans are going to the dogs ... but fishing here on the Central Coast is as good as I have seen in the last 30 years.

We slept in this morning knowing that the low tide was in the morning, what a treat. We went to PSL at 8:00 or so and launched at 8:30, got live bait and off to drift for halibuts at the pea patch. Enough wind for a good drift with a drift sock, we managed to boat two halibuts and released a nice cabazon two short lings a couple of gophers and a sand dab. It was a little chilly but a good fishing day even with a late start, well worth it. We heard that the party boat caught and released a 30 lb. salmon.out in front of Pheco in 240 ft. of water. There was said to be lots of bait, so it looks like a salmon try will be the order of the day tommorrow. Good fishing to all.

Blackie, It's been awhile since I've fished Mexico but we used to get our lic. and boat permits thru the sport launches in SD. If you are going to get a boat permit make sure all of your paper work is in order before you leave home. I spent hours in the SD DMV sorting out the boat registration on one trip because the registration I had was not curent. Make sure everyone on board has a mex fishing lic. Have fun catch fish.

FYI, when I talked to Deke the other day he said that Darby was considering operating the bait boat in Morro. Hope they get something worked out for Morro before the tuna show.

fished out of morro bay today for two nice flattys and some real nice cabezons, allso kept a few rockfish. wind came up early and it looks like a windy weekend ahead. heads up on the mex fishing license. if you are going through the tiajuana border there is a place there were you can get all the permits you need, if you need a tourist permit they have them but as you cross the border you will need to have them stamped at the border. remember to be legal past meneadero you must have a tourist card to the point you are going, a boat permit and if your are fishing you must have a fishing license or if there is any tackle on the boat at all everybody on the boat must have a fishing license wether you are fishing or not. fishing licenses can be purchased down there cheaper but sometimes they are hard to get. even thou they are talking about extending the pass-port deadline(jan.1 2008) it is better to aply now as it just took me 11 weeks to get mine and will take longer in the future. looking forward to my next trip in three weeks.

Fished Avila Tuesday into a hot Hali bite about 2:oo P.M., Halis still hammering the bait at 3:30 when I had to leave to meet the launch cut off time at 4:00 P.M., Ended up with 1-20# 1-14# and 1-23" lots of hit misses, went back to the very same spot yesterday for no legals, just one short and a 29" ling,7# red, 3 of the biggest blacks i'd ever seen, and there were no rock fish there the day before. Thats the Hali scenario.
