Capt Kirk,

Things could change but I see no break in this wind. Its here for the foreseeable future and beyond into late next week unfortunately.

Keep a close on eye it.

Right Tim and the chlorophyll was really great too. I like to compare the satellite images to the actual conditions observed by the boats fishing. Sometimes I carry a weighted white jug to put in the water just to see what the color really is.

Which brings me to a question for;

Joe (BBQ), Bob (Windfall), George (Cubano), MIke (Legacy), Jeff (Tunafin), Mark (Pure Adrenalin )and any one else that was out there tues/wed.

What was the farthest that anyone went west ? 121:36 is the farthest that I saw posted. Based on yesterday's chlorophyll the cleanest and bluest water was west of the donut starting at 121:40. Dustin was reporting a lot of "clutter" on the screen. I figure the more data points we get the better the chance of finding the fish next time.

Really? That's nuts. I am a bit of a pier rat in Avila and catch makerel hand over fist in half mile wide schools all day. I think I've caught over a hundred in only a couple hours from one spot! 40 minutes with a sabiki rig out in the bay seems like it'd yield enough bait for a few days!
But I'm prolly wrong.

Thanks George.

The wind has blown the marine layer away from the area where the fish were caught yesterday. If the timing was right we should be able to get an SST/chlorophyll shot from earlier today. It will be good to compare the images to the reports.
Monte;
Mackerel are hard to come by around here and the bait boats always get anchovies and sardines. Will have to ask Deke why no mackerel.

Sounds like they are a little line shy out there but hitting on all the skirts/jigs!. I have a question some might be able to weigh in on.... Why don't we use Makeral at all on the central coast? aside from no one seeing mak's in tuna belly's, if they are eating large sardines, and all we have are small bait, don't makeral seem like an excellent option? They're a good size, and crazy-wiggly and plentifull. Just seemed like on a slow day, might yield results. Also, I rarely here of a solid hookup from yo-yoing with iron. I read articals from all over the state/country/world that says that it's a tuna killing technique, yet we don't seem to do it! I might lack the experience of many on this board, but it seems that we might be leaving alot out on the table! Just wondering- Can't wait to go try it all

Had a full buffet available including mexican flag however, the jerry garcia and cucumber feathers were the hot ticket for us repeatedly....also, got one on a cedar plug. I picked up a few bags of chovies to soak but, really never got any LFT's around the boat although we tried throwing out handfuls of chovies while we worked the jig fish to the boat. In the end no bait fish for us-

Priviledged to be one of the half-dozen boats or so out yesterday on the tuna hunt. First stop about 43 miles on 211 heading w/59.5 degree water, set out 3 troll lines off the back and additional 2 lines spread on outriggers for almost an immediate triple hook-up...fast, fun and bit frantic. Ended up with 7 fish low-20#lb. range w/largest two at 26 and 29 pounds. All jig-fish, 2 double hook-ups and 2 triple hook ups in the day, missed a few fish at the gaff but fun all the same... All fish in box by 11:00...trolled for couple more hours w/high hopes....heading in at 2pm.

BBQ thanks for the numbers!

Back from a 2 day outta Avila. We Left Avila at 3:45am and headed out on 230 heading to 40 miles. Put out a boatline and 4 rods and trolled at 7 knots and within 15 min put 3 fish on board. Worked area for 1hr before moving 10 miles to south and boated another. Worked the area hard til about 10:30 then headed to 34 15 121 22 and put 7 more on over the next hour and half. All were in 20 Lb class. Pulled lines and ran to front of Santa Cruz and anchored up at dusk. got a nice 34 lb butt and one of us got hit by a drive by that dumped in the kelp. Got 2 short butts in am and then Rick hits a 28 lb White Sea bass. fished til noon the made run across channel. Excellent time. even if i dont go again this year it was a success. got some fillets and some tuna and lived to fish another day.

If you are looking for a cool long range weather forecaster check out this site.

http://www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/model/

Click on one of the following

RUC this will give you 0-12 hours
ETA will give you 0 to 84 hours
GFS will give you 0 to 180 hours

You can select individual hours or select "loop all times" the looping feature is pretty cool.

Click on "MSLP/Winds" located under surface plots and away you go.

enjoy

Great news Mitch ! Thank Dustin for the extra effort and for getting the tuna ball rolling this early.
Looks like it is going to blow for a week. I looked at the computer models for the next week and don't see any break in the wind but weather is subject to change without notice.
Hope Virge's gets their bait operation going and PSL gets the launch area dredged out.
This could be the season we have been waiting for !!

FYI: the Pacific Horizon on it's way in had a double jig strike at 34.50 and 121.22 that's 36 miles from PSL and also another at 34.57 and 121.09 that's 23 miles and landed the fish so we know they were Albacore. I thought some of you might want the closer numbers. Good Luck

Hey Paul and others responding about stolen West Marine Chartplotter/GPS--thanks a bunch. Garmin (and others) has also been notified with serial number registered as stolen unit.

I am near certain it was taken outa my truck in the PSL parking lot while we were cleaning fish. Was feeling real mello after a day on the water and didnt lock it I guess. Didn't notice it till later as I didnt need it for the ride home. Anyways I am pretty sure the thief will read this board.

Thief: Just turn it in so you can stop looking over your shoulder all the time. Things like this have a way of coming back to bite you sometimes really hard. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but eventually you'll get yours. Set it right and turn it in to Portside Marine.

Cloud out

Had a fun day at the Donut today. Ocean was like a lake as we left Morro Bay at 4:00am to get bait from Deke in Port San Luis. The bait was about 4 1/2" but did the trick just fine. We arrived at the Donut at 8:00 and got a jig stop almost immediatly. Picked up 7 albacore on bait, one on iron and 3 on jigs for a total of 11 by 11:00 and then quit. Fish were 20-26 lbs. Last hookup was 48 mi from Morro in 57.3 degree water.

ALBACORE: First hand report...
It was wonderful to be worked by a tuna again! I was on the Pacific Horizon today and it was a blast. We set out jigs at first light and within three minutes we were hooked up. Total count for the day was 18 albacore for nine anglers. It would have been easily double that if the bait we had were larger. Anchovies were in the 3 to 4 inch range. Large fish with tiny, fragile bait. 15# line with #4 hooks worked, but was difficult. I was over gunned with 25# tackle. The fish went from 18 to 29 lbs; quality, fighting tuna. We had 6 or 7 jig stops, with most of them producing bait fish also. Also had a couple of full on boils going on. They were hungry, but not necessarily for our tiny bait. They were full of 8" sardines! The bright jigs worked best: zuccini Zukers, yellow, green and orange skirts. It was a great start to what I hope will be a super tuna season. I am exausted...

Will

I just called Patriot (595-7200) and they got 19 fish today to 29#. They are heading out again tonight. Next trip is scheduled for next Monday, weather permitting.
The sport launch had no fish checked in, but that could be because they close at 4 p.m.
Talked to Mike Moore, he is on the hook with a bait tank full of nice chovies. He is heading out at O' dark thirty. I'm sure he'll post a big number tomorrow.
Here's to a good albicore year!!!

Monte: the only thing that is predictable is that it is unpredictable. It's not the fish so much as it is the currents and the weather. Last few years the warm currents haven't been pushing in as far as other years, and you couldn't get at them. The fish were out there, just too far for most sporties. It seemed like when the good water was in range, the weather was bad, and when the weather was good, the good water was like 75 miles out there.

If work/weather/currents permit it, then I'd give it a shot. Last year the window was like a week long.

To answer your question about the length of the run, it's usually July throught the end of October, but fish are caught as early as early June and as late as December.

Is it just me, or is the start of an early LFT season? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad, but wonder if the more experienced guys around here(Avila) think the tuna will stick around. Isn't the water a little colder still than it should be for Patriot to be scooping em' up 50 miles out? Just curious because I am itching to get out there, but just don't want to jump the gun and get skunked. What do you guys think?
