Dear Zahed,

You can get fishing licence from EAD (Envinonmental Agency); they were located in old ZADCO building in Khalidiya last time I went there. All you need to take with you is copy of your passport with visa page, 2 photos and AED 120 and they shall make your licence in no time. Visitors can also get weekly licences for AED 30 only. You just have to be resident of UAE to be eligible for one-year licence; doesn't matter if you are on Dubai visa, though I am not sure if you need to reside in Abu Dhabi or not, but you do not need a tenancy agreement to get one. I myself, work for a company in Jebel Ali and am under JAFZA visa. You can also try the following link to EAD website www.ead.ae which I think has an online application too.

As for fishing with you, I have no problem but this weekend we intend to go to Fujairah, and Corniche Al-Qurm on Eastern Ring Road (Salaam Street) is not our type of place. Maybe we can coordinate and plan for some better place.

Dear ijlal ,

No abudhabi fishing lisence is not valid in dubai . There is no provision for visitors to fish in dubai . Even sharjah people are not allowed to fish her as they hold sharjah rental contracts .

If you are caught without a lisence min fine is about 350 to 500 dirhams depending upon the mistake you have done . If you are catching crab with nets fine is more .

There is a way out for people who are visitors . you can hire a boat where the boat operator has a lisence and you come under him .

Normally westerners who wants to go fishing do this . But then boat fishing if its a well equiped boat can run up to 1600 -1800 dirhams for 8 hours not cheap at all . These kind of boats are sailing out of dubai marina and mena seahi . The cheaper ones are also available at jumeriah fishing village 2 .

Other boats which are not that good used by local fisherman charge around 500 dirhams for 3 hours which can accomodate about 4 guys . But then they are without any modern equuipment .

Hello Zahed,

Yes, I always keep a licence, even though nobody has ever checked it. The question is: Is it acceptable in the other emirates? Hope some of the old hands can advise...

By the way where are you fishing in Abu Dhabi these days? Getting any luck? Last friday, my dear friend and fishing buddy Shahzad and I went to Musaffah; spent the whole night, and did not get one single decent bite, not on sardines, shrimps or squid.

Since the last few weeks, I have caught a few sharks of 1 - 2 kg at Mina Zayed, and that is all!

Cheers!

Folk,

Can anyone advise if Recreational Fishing Licence issued by Environmental Agency Abu Dhabi is accepted for fishing in Dubai waters? If it is not, does that mean only Dubai residents, and those who are wealthy enough to be able to rent accomodation in their name and own their own vehicle are allowed to fish in Dubai waters? This is odd... how do visitors fish? What is the fine/penalty if one is caught without a licence?

Thanks.

Hello Jeen,

I registered on this forum only today, though I have occasionally gone through the reports from time to time.

It is good to see anglers like yourself are contributing to keep this forum alive - Your current advice on milkfish, kingfish and others is very detailed and accurate. I remember I used to be member of Gulf Fishing Reports or similar website that was moderated by Heber; you were also member of the same. That forum sort of died, postless for months on end and I stopped visiting it. Good to read there are people here who know GT stands for Giant Trevally and not Golden Trevally!

Hopefully, we shall try to keep this forum alive, and in the process, educate people to follow ethical angling. For now, I have found there is a lot of following for this sport, but with very poor standards.

Wish you great fishing the next time you go out!

Regards.

Hi Fishos,

Been out of the country for a while. Nice to see a few catch reports and a lot of posts on the forum.
Hi Zahed the Milk fish is a game fish but very difficult to catch . I have not caught any till date. I have heard about various Techniques being used by people who are obsessed by them due to their great fighting capabilities and usully jump around when hooked. The fish feeds exclusievly on floating moss like algae , the reason why you see them shoaling to gether and feeding on the surface with their tails and dorsal fins sticking out. Quite a few fly fisher men drift a fly that looks like a tuft of algae towards them and hook up. As for bread , this is a lot like the bread used in and around bombay used to catch mullet. Mullet never readily take to bread , they are over period of time trained to take bread or Atta( Wheat dough). Many anglers fish with bread or atta over a few years and thus the fish become used to this food. Similarly around Dubai and Abu Dhabi some smart anglers just break pieces of bread and float it to the Milk fish over a few weeks together.Once they start seeing the muilkfish readily taking these bait with confidence ,they float a thin line 12 to 15 lb with bread baited hook to it .. and all hell breaks loose!!
Guys the Golden trevally is usually not caught on a popper a golden trevally is not a GT a GT is a Giant TRevally. The golden trevally normally feeds on shrimps and other crustaceans occasionaaly they join a group of other feeding fish and attack small schools of bait fish. These are normally caught mostly on shrimps ,small crabs, occasionally on cut fish and on small plugs if they are attacking a school of bait fish.
For those who are interested in king fish .Let me tell you that all the big king fish I caught have been from the shore. I have caught scores from the boat but the few from the shore have all been upward of 10 kg. Now you will have to wait till the end of Sept .By the first week of October they are already there and can be caught on Ballyhoo ( half beak) rigged on TReble hook . Fish with wire trace to avoid cut offs.Keep the rods in a rod holder well anchored.
THe first srike and a screaming run for about 50 meters on a 5 to 8 lb drag all happens so fast. This time you do not touch the drag just take the rod and hold it till the run stop. After this first run the fish is yours. All fish are lost when people try to tighten the drag or if the drag jams.keep the drag well oiled and smooth running. THe king fish set up should be a seperate one that you toss and keep anchored till you get "that Bite". THe second set up should keep you busy with the breams, sheris and such stuff. THe King fish rig could get you sometimes on to a 30 kg cobia or a Major Cuda. Just check the ballyhoo every one hour to see if it has not been cleaned up by crabs. If you need to know how to rig a ballyhoo. Check on the internet or check out Hebers earlier posts where he has given a very detailed description.Use 30 Lb line on the King fish reel.
And Oh ... a lot of our fellow anglers use foul hooking methods to catch Milk fish , but then that is not sport!.

Any chance you can describe the methodology for making a milkfish bait. ive seen a small school yesterday.

Also some friend told me about 2 different species. One with Silver tail and another with a golden one. He added that the 2nd species; being an oil licker, tastes like diesel.

Do u count the fins or just the from their shape.
I caught a similar one (but smaller) with yellow analand pelvic fins. So I figured it was a Yellowfin seabream. What do u think?

Hi Zayed,

since many fish species look similar, it is easiest to identify them from the shape of their fins. Always best to photograph them with their dosal fin open.

Zahed, that is a Karanteen Seabream.

Very common here in the UAE.

Ronald,

a lot of people use different combination of herbs to catch fish.....actually this is not put on the hook as bait, but used to bait the water. Fish have to first get used to the differnt herbs etc, so baiting is done on a regular basis. People bait the water (or their favourite spot) every 2 or 3 days for a couple of weeks before fishing there. However baiting is mostly done in lakes, ponds & is used to draw the bigger fish to that particular area. It could be done in the sea, but doesnt have the same effect. I know of baiting being done to catch mullet, other than that, I have not seen anyone bait the water.
Usually in Salt water, a concoxion is used with the regular bait, which lets out a slight odour in the water. This increases the chance of fish being drawn to the bait. But it is not that significant.

Hi Everyone,

How are you’ll? Hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

Welcome – Hany , M. Zayed, Hussain to the forum, and Welcome to Dubai – Jam.

If I hv. missed anyone, please excuse.
Pranab it was nice speaking to you this morning, congrats! good catch.
And thanks for sharing the details on your catch, like what bait you used, etc.etc.

I would appreciate that everyone write down details of their catch – at least the main point as per their experience.

Sometimes we see the person next to us catching many fishes, but we don’t. – here comes the technique and the bait they use. We just see the hook and bait and assume its ordinary hook or bait, and we try the same, which many a times does not work, but as Keyur and Pranab said there are various types of hooks, and we need to know when to use the right hook, secondly about the bait, when we see someone using eg. chicken, we also use the same but we do not get thru’, the reason- we should know which part of chicken to use, same goes with shrimps, more fresher the better, these things seems to be small but if we don’t pay proper attention, we come home without any catch. And ofcourse experience counts.

In our forum there are wonderful - well experienced friends, who really share their ideas – thanks to them. And there are those who only read this forum and are up to themselves, but they too are well experienced but due to some reason they don’t like to join. Please come and share your views.

The other day I met a Pakistani guy, who was telling me about his experience in his home country where they use various herbs to attract the fish…….it may or may not work here, but at least it gives some idea and makes fishing interesting.

Regards,

Ronald.

Hi guys ,

After long in this hot summer i got a good weekend . Yesterday i went to jumeriah fishing village 2 and landed one hamour and one shyam . The hamour was 2 kgs good one and the shyam was about 1 kg . Today I went to UMM AL QUAIN PARMOUNT RESORT . I heard there were barracudas and big cat fishes . The weather was nice there and i caught 2 barracudas . Then i moved on to sharjah near altawan mall area under the bridge . I did not catch any thing but got some valuable exerience how to catch milk fish . I saw a philipino guy using a long bobber catching milk good size milk fish with bread as bait . When i moved to makthoum it was about 10 and municipality guys were conducting a raid there . Every one was running leaving their rods and reels . Offlate municipility is strict in both makthoum and al sheef . So guys without lisence pls be careful . It was sad to see a elderly guy along with his young son being penalised . I dont knw why the hell the municipility guys dont catch the chinese people who catch squid jelly fish and crabs which all ara restricted speicies . They even have broken the creek park barrier and they sneek in the park after 12 midnight . I cant belive the authorities dont know about it .

Anyways at evening i went to al sheef street . There were very few bites in the begening . But then when i changed place to the queens house side i landed up with a big silver gurnt there . I used shrimp as bait although most experienced fisher men insist they come on rumali roti and chiken breast pieces . I met another fellow angler who name is Mr Sarafraj . When i askd how long he had been fishing . He told me for the last 34 yrs . Goood i was about to fall flat . I quickly pounced upon him to know a few new tricks about catching king fish . This is the only fish which eluded me this year .

When i asked him which is the place to catch kings he said dont worry let november come from the same spot kings would be availabe in cooler weather . But the best spot in uae is in RAK in AL RAMS AREA after the cement factory where kings and barracudas are available in plenty Near the naval base area . It was a pleasure to meet him . When i requested him to join the forum he flatly refused . He told he knows the forum and he is aware of people there who talk anything but fishing . Hence i was sad that i could not convinence some one for joining the forum for the first time . Tomorrow i will try for barracudas at jumeriah in the morning . Any one intersted to join can call me on my cell .

hi jay ,

Dont worry mate i knw all the tackle shop around uae and u wont have any prob in getting them . i will be there with u once you land up here . The only thing that you can think of briing is thinner lines . its a prob here as most tackle shop uses .40 or .50 lines . So you can get them frm ur country in case u are used to it . But of course our friend keyur has been doing a good job as he imported few from australia which are of good quality . Yes we use here mostly cut bait and artificial baits . Live bait is not that much in use . But i knw few guys who goes for kings catch live bait near the river creek mouth and use them .

Dear jam ,

90 percent guys here fishes without lisence . This is the secret . But to get a fishing lisence its not a big deal . Just after stamping on visa u must hv tenency contract in ur name . read the archives and you can get the full process how to get a lisence frm municiapility . I have cut and pase my own lisence application process for new people who wants to be a lisence holder . Today i weent to makhtoum bridge and alsheef spot there were heavy checking . I saw people running leaving their rods and and bags . But for your relief i do knw a few places where they never know even that fish is available . I always keep them secret for the new guys who join the fishing community here .

My cell no is 0506789546 i would lv to show u around as most probably u dont hv a car yet unless u get the visa stamped .

greetings from al garhoud
i've eventually made it to the sand dunes. unfortunately my visa is not processed yet so i cannot apply for the fishing license but i was just wondering where people usually go to cast a line so that i can go and have a look around? also, what is the deal if you do get caught fishing without a license? does anyone actually check or are they all too busy stuck in traffic?
tight lines

Hi guys. Thanks for the warm welcome Pranab & Keyur.

Pranab, from what I've read here in the forum, I don't think the fishing conditions over there would disappoint me at all. You have quite a number of productive fishing spots all around just nearby and a consistently decent sized catch average. Fishing over here isn't that good since I live in the city and it is very difficult (next to impossible?) to find good spots in the overcrowded, overfished bay nearby, let alone catch any decent sized fish. Great fishing over here would mean taking a 4 hour+ car/bus trip or a 2 hour boat ride. Good for a weekend trip but too far for a city rat like me who wants to fish just a few hours to calm stressed out nerves.

Regarding tackle, I'd like to ask what kind of tackle do you guys regularly use over there? Over here, live bait is the norm, with cut bait and artificials being used only when live bait runs out or isnt available. I use medium-light action rod & spinning reel setup for general purpose fishing and a medium-heavy roller rod & bay reel for open water. However because of limited luggage space I am having second thoughts of lugging my equipment with me on the plane. Maybe someone could help me out obtaining equipment when I get there? I'm not very finicky about tackle, as long as its in good working condition. 2nd hand equipment will do.

One last thing. With all the new rules in airport & aircraft security, would I get in trouble if I brought along a supply of fishing hooks & lures in my carry on luggage, them being sharp and all? I was warned not to take any sharp objects with me on the plane.

Regards

HI Asmi, Biju & Jay,

Welcome to the forum once again.

Pranab, regarding the hooks.....do not try changing the shape of any hook. There are designed, tried & tested. Just use a file & remove the barb.

Before you decide to change your hooks, let me see what you use. I will also show you a variety of hooks that I have in different shapes. The hooks change depending on the type of fish you are going to catch. Some fish have wide mouths, soft mouths, hard mouths, small mouths etc.....thats you gotta decide.

I'm sure that Chua & kit will be able to assist you too. Anyway, we can go through this sometime when we meet. Right now I'm going out so I cant explain in detail.

Hi guys, how you all doing?
My name is Hussam Al Asmi, Syrian live and work here in Dubai for the last 9 yrs. I started fishing like one month back when I really wanted to do it a long time ago. Al Seef is my favorite spot for fishing as it was most rewarding. I got a 1 kg fish last week but unfortunately I didn't take any pictures as I left my mobile at home that day. It was also my pleasure to meet Mr. Pranab at Al Seef Area where he was also fishing that day, it was really nice meeting him as he is a very helpful man and got from him so many advices regarding fishing. I was also invited for the trip to Um Al qoueen but couldn't make it for some reasons.
I would like to be an active member in this team and join any activity or any fishing trips you guys do to any where in Dubai or to any other Emirate. Pranab, I will be going to Al Seef this evening and will be there also on Friday and Saturday evenings, you are all welcome to join me there. I might go to another place in Ajman Greek or sharjah Greek this week end. My contact number is 050 4969622.at the end i want to say hi to all of you and wish you all a nice catch.

I have quite a few philipino fising firends . I will give u all their tel contacts once you arrive here . But i think it would be a disappointment as far as fishing is concerned . I heard sports fishing compared to philipines dubai is nothing . But any way we are all here to guide you once u are here .
