Fished salmon out of MB today. The bite was not wide open like yesterday, but we still managed to put 2 nice fish in the box including a 20lb hen that was full of roe(steelhead bait for my Oregon trip). Our first fish came on a green hotspot/purple haze hoochie. Our other two bites were on the watermelon spoon. It was so foggy in the AM that I almost ran over a #200lb class thresher shark basking on the surface before we saw it.The tail was almost 6' long....All of our action was in 115-130ft between the red buoy north of the Rock and Toro Creek Road....jeff

Hi Gang,

Just a quick post, to confirm that the albies are still off the weather buoy. My son-inlaw and I towed up to Monterey Bay Fri afternoon, only to find, that the town, had been taken over by every motorcycle in Calif. Between the band playing loudly and the crotch jockies roaring half the night, well we didn't get much sleep. Anyway, we took off around 3:30am and made for the buoy area in some pretty short 3-4ft chop and mixed seas, but no sweat for Tugfire. We did manage five nice albies in the 20 something size. Purple/black broomtail and the same color CD-14 Rapala seamed to be the ticket. Also, short to the boat is better. Try weaving in and out of the temp break in a East West direction.

Be Careful Out There, Still Rough,

Rick/Tugfire

Fished with the fleet off Toro. Put in the water at 5:30 and were fishing by 6 a.m. Got a knockdown at 6:15, but didn't stick. Another knockdown 10 minutes later, but no sticky:-( Finally got one to stick around 7, it was a 24" nook. About 8:30 we get a 12# fish, reset and get a 15# fish 10 minutes later. Went about 2 hours for nada, then another 12# clone. Had another hour lull then another 12# fish. Ended the day with 5 salmon! 3 came on straight watermelon apex (although I did have a flasher on the ball) 60-65 OTW. The other two came on purple haze/red hot spot 90-95 down. All fish were 120-150' of water. A couple of fish just tore the lure off the downrigger, taking line immediately!!! Several others put up a great fight, a few jumps (no they weren't coho) and screaming drags.
Great day on the water for the Hendricks' crew. My Dad's lived here for 40 years and says this was his best day salmon fishing ever!
hope the bite continues.
best fishes,
steve

Tim, my d-rig spectra is 200 or 250 lb (can't remember exactly... guess i'm getting old), and it's Power Pro. It comes in a 200-yard spool, and it says something like "replacement for downrigger wire" on the package. It's green, and it's a lot smaller diameter than wire. There is NO hum at all, and a lot less angle. The Scotty stuff that I've seen is some other kind of round braid, and it's kinda silvery-white. Since we fish in green water, I prefer green.

Mike, Ever get a bit of a backlash with wire? Rarely, I know, but when you do, it sucks. Well, its way worse with spectra because it is so limp and you cant "push" the loops to get to the problem like you would with mono or wire. It's like trying to push a rope. Plus, it's a lot finer than wire. You also have to be nice to it because it will chafe much easier than wire, so you have to figure out how you're going to attach your stops so they won't cut your spectra. I'ts also slippery, so you have to figure out how to keep the stops from sliding, especially if you stack gear. Another factor is stretch... it has even less than wire, so if you shock it with a sudden stop it can break. You'll see what I mean once you try it. Hope this answers your questions.

We ended up with 4 today, 2 shy of limits. I think if we would have stayed late we could have made it happen though. Had a couple close calls with furbags, but got lucky. I think if they were the big knotheads instead of the smallish females, we would have lost.

Best regards,
Paul

We were one of the many boats trolling for salmon today out of Morro Bay, once the fog kind of cleared you could see all of them. The depts that we were in were 120 to 150. We put on a double in 150 around 11:30 or so, one 95 feet down the other 110 ft.. White glow hoochie with green hot spot and a small chrome dodger and a new white scalelite. The first fish was in 135 ft. hoochie green hot spot. The ocean was good and wind was non- existent. A good day for us and others. Good luck to weekday fisherman, Sheryl

Fished Monterey on Saturday for 8 fish, largest 23lbs, just off the weather bouy. They came on cedar plug, fish traps and black feathers.Water was bunpy but fishable. The last two trips have been about the same, the only thing is they seam to want to hit the jigs close to the boat, if you are not getting hit, you may try shorting up the line behind the boat, lots of guys got fish on their drag lines.

They are still chewing between 10E and Cayucos
had a double today and heard of many radio fish. The Cayucos ones are a little smaller than the ones on the outside ,they used to call that area kiddyland and some old timers used to say those jacks were there all year round! But it sure was fun.

I know that some use just heavy spectra, but Scotty makes a new line just for downriggers - I've got it on mine and it's really nice (no more metal "splinters" from broken metal braid).

Just curious about the Spectra, Paul. What pound test do you run for the downrigger? Is it just conventional Spectra as used for spooling a reel or is something specific for downriggers?

Paul;
I just got some spectra for my downriggers , havent put it on yet.
What did you mean by learning curve?
Is there more drag,
One thing for sure you wont need a black box i would assume .
Dont really fish salmon but do have all the gear , sounds like I may have to give it a stab if the fish are as thick as it sounds like .

Fished off Toro today for limits 9-12 lb kings. Got a couple silvers too. Good to see the mix. Purple haze on green flasher did most of the business, but a special plug took 2, and one came on a chrome croc, all between 70-100' OTW. I will never fish wire on the downriggers again. Spectra is so much nicer, but there is a learning curve........

Donny, I will email those pix tomorrow after I get them off my friend's cam. They look very cool. I wish I could get some pix of my rig during business hours! Great day on the water. I'll be there manyana.

Though bumpy it was fishable, definetly a scratchy bite.
There were acouple of guys that did pretty well.

Fished out of Moss Landing Saturday and as expected it was bumpy. The albacore were in the area but fishing was scratchy. We saw some fish caught near us and heard of several others but we got nothing. Not sure what the deal was but we tried everything under the sun. decided not to go get beat up on Sunday since the forcast is worse for tomorrow. Most boats had 1-5 fish with a few that did better. No bait stops heard but we fed some nice chovies to the flying rats in the parking lot.

Deke got me on the boat at 5am, got bait and headed out...but had a line dragging off outdrive so cancelled offshore run. Weather looked pretty bumpy too. We got our limits of reds, couple blues and yellows. Big reds in the 8-10 lb and 1 ling. Guess we're headed to Morro tomorrow for salmon.

By the way, another thing that made today memorable was that we had three doubles and also lost a very good fish that charged the outboard and broke the line in the prop after a long battle. The meat of all the fish we kept was much redder than we have seen lately..

Had a dream day out of Morro today with my brother in law. We caught 7 salmon and kept a limit (4) for the bbq. Largest fish was a 13 lb silver, which was released. We fished in 130 feet of water, 100 feet OTW with a purple haze hootchie and a chrome/green spoon. All of the fish came off of Toro Creek. Water was super clean and fish were very hungry. Sun all day. What more could you want?

I fished Friday for Salmon on BBQ with Joe. Great day, thanks Joe.

We had a triple hook up in ~170 feet of water around where the old radar bouy was. We put two nice ones in the box and put one back to get bigger (he was legal). Watermelon apex, purple haze with green flasher.
Recommend the 10E to RD bouy tack.

Good chlorophyll shot yesterday but the bad news is it is dirty and the area around the old weather buoy is filthy dirty. There are a few clean areas but not many.
The Monterey buoy is still blowing so the guys up there are having a bumpy ride.

The Monterey buoy is back up to 18-19 and the forecast is 10-20 tomorrow on the outside and 5 in the bay so who knows what it will be where the fish are being caught. When Bayside posts this evening Todd will probably describe the conditions today.
Matt; There is no cleaning station at Moss not sure about SC, there was one. Both places have had bait lately. If it is foggy you will need your radar for both. They use chan 11.

Fishable until 11 a.m. Had 2 raked baits and 1 sand sole. got one short but off Port. Man, never thought I would not get a keeper in July!!!

Man,

I hope our weather guy at Diablo Canyon dose not get layoff. They going to cut over 500 members at that power plant!!!! There is no way in hell i would wont to work there. If you kids to take care of, what you would do.

I got his forecast this morning and it sounds like the wave buoy will down for a week.

"Note: The Diablo Canyon Waverider Buoy is being serviced and should
be back online next week. A new set of (200Wh) batteries will be
installed. These batteries represent an energy density three times
that of current batteries with an expected lifespan of over two
years."

We are definately leaning towards making the run north tonight for fishing Sat/Sun. Few questions for the guys that have been there, Is there a fish cleaning station at Moss or Santa Cruz or do you have to clean on the boat? how about the bait situation in both locations? is the radio channel still 68 in that area? Any problems running the entrances in darkness. Have GPS map and Radar but still wanted to ask. Thanks for any info. Matt / Killer B's

Kevin;
If you are talking about Monterey and have a boat like Rick's ... Go for it ! Right now the Monterey buoy is coming down and the forecasts are in the 10-15 range with the 15 in the afternoon. If you and your boat can handle sloppy weather it may be ok. Keep a watch on the buoy and make a last minute decision.

Mark:
The weather looks pretty sloppy but if you do go I think, based on the latest Terrafin, that you will need to go out to at least the 122:10 line.

SST:
Good SST/chlorophyll from yesterday but I don't see anything inviting in our area. The area south of the 1908 looks good and the area at and above the Davidson looks good and we know it is holding fish. Maybe by the time the wind backs off it will look better straight out.

Kevin/Sparks,

From what scattered info I have been able to pick up, Sat. is still going to be rough, but the swell duration is a little farther apart, and wave action is about 4 to 6ft. This is rough, but were going to take a shot anyway.

Take Care Out There, Safety First,

Mark,

I see what you're looking at on Tempbreak. I tried to look at coastwatch, but the links weren't active. I must need to adjust a setting or something. Anyway, good on you for trying... and good luck. I'll probaby fish salmon this weekend.

Paul

Paul, check out Tempbreak, Terrafin and Coastwatch. For several days now the temps have been moving into this area and connected to the outside. Don't know they are holding but should be with the fish being North, Just have to take a look.

Hey Mark, which SST's are you looking at? The latest Terrafin shot shows 56-58 degree water at the numbers you posted.
