Charles: I did a little more research and it looks like the white wire is the NMEA output and the black is ground. You may have to set the baud rate. Check the AP manual to see if it needs a specific baud rate and then the GPS manual to see how to set it. Be sure and turn the NMEA out put on. Let me know what Humminbird says. |

Charles: I downloaded the manual this morning and like you said couldn't find any info on the NMEA input/output except it shows the cable and how to turn NMEA on and off. It should have the same wires as your AP ie. 2 wires receive and 2 wires transmit. The GPS transmit goes to the AP receive and vice versa. Sorry I am no help and good luck with Humminbird. |

John, You beat me to the punch, length and size of your anchor chain is just as important as the anchor. Sufficent scope is also important. Kevin, don't know if you caught it but someone mentioned that you need two anchors bow/stern for the islands otherwise you will spin around a single anchor. Carl |

late post on the anchor question my 2 cents. I like both the bruce and danforth but don't skimp on the chain. Use the largest chain your windlass will accept and at least as many feet as your boat is long, the more the better esp. in a sandy anchorage. Have not checked the board in a while as we are in Hawaii now. Fished a couple of days for some ono and aku but no ahi that's fishing. But I do love ono. Hope the weather lays down and the albies go on the chew but in the mean time sounds like you guys are at least cathing some salmon. |

Hi Harrell my unit definetly has the 0183 cable and outputs. It is on page 3 of my manual. Problem is that I do not know what color wire goes to where. I will be on the phone tomorrow AM with Humminbird to see if I can get that info. Thanks for your input. Charlie |

Charles: I pulled up the manual on your GPS unit and scanned the features on the sites selling the unit and based on your description of the three wires I would say that your unit does not have any NMEA input/output. The Manual was to big to download in any reasonable time so I didn't check it all just the table of contents. If you have the manual and it does not describe any NMEA input/output then I don't think there are any. Are there any connectors on the back besides the three wire cable? |

Looking for information about hooking up my new auto pilot to my GPS. Need to know how to hook up the MNEA 0183 wires. Here is what I have: Humminbird 937c DF GPS/FF/Chartplotter. The 0183 cable has 3 wires Red/Black/White the red wire has 12v. I do not have any other valid information for the GPS at this time. There is no information in the manual or online at Humminbird. The auto pilot is a Ray marine S1000. It has 4 wires for the MNEA connection. Brown -ve Recieve, Green +ve recieve, Orange +ve transmit, Blue -ve transmit Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Charlie |

On a minus tide...yes. I believe things are looking good for this weekend's launching though. I just got through hanging the Whaler on a buddy's mooring for a while. Tide was out but was not bad, plenty of depth at the launch. I know tomorrow will be the same. |

Jeff, Hey, I tried that for the first time last weekend and it worked great. I just did with the apex, but thinking about doing it with the hootchie too. I just wonder if the flasher gives the hootchie a little action that might trigger a bite. What do you think about that??? Great pointer though...especially the distances to the clip. Thanks Jeff. later, steve |

Josh (conman) I run my apex or Kroc w/out flasher or dodger about 4 ft above the ball and 20-25ft behind the Scotty release clip.I run a red or green hotspot directly off each ball secured by 3ft of 60lb mono with a large snap/sampo swivel. This gives you the attraction of the flasher without all the extra crap on the line. This method has been VERY effective for me over the years.I do the same thing when fishing bait on a rotary killer or FBR,but shorten the distance from the clip to 15ft..hope that helps...jeff |

The salmon are still around Morro Bay. Picked up my limit (2) between 10E and radar 110 ft down on the wire. One on a purple hootchie and one on a watermelon apex. A little roll on the water but very fishable and nice. |

Anchor questions, I agree throughout history the Bruce claw anchor has been proven. This last winter I spent quite alote of time having a new bow roller designed and built for the BBQ, including a samsone post. The first thing I found, finding a supply for new Bruce, anchors was terminal. I opted for a Delta, plow after reserching all the new updated material available and the reliability of the Delta, was the next best thing, to the Bruce. One thing for certin is, if I could have found a Bruce I would have bought it. Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ. |

Took a quick shot at the salmon out of MB this afternoon...Got to the boat at 3:00pm and had my watermelon apex in the water at 3:25....afternoon wind was blowing about 20-25mph with a steep uneven swell and lots of chop.Decided to head back in at 4:00, but luck was with me and I boated a nice 14lb fish straight out from the harbor entrance in 128ft...Back in my slip at Virg's by 4:15...That's why I LOVE the Central Coast....jeff |

Hello Lucky Dog, Congratulations on your very first Salmon. You have been putting the time in on the water. Remember, if your line is not wet, you have no chances of catching anything. I want to thank you, for the incredible pictures of the BBQ, including my buddy Serg. If there is anyone out there that would like to have on the water pictures of your boat, with the rock behind you, call Greg, he does the best job I have ever seen. Greg, you are very welcome, and it has been a pleasure sharing our experience with you. You have been a breath of fresh air with your show of appreciation. Looking forward to having you on the boat with us soon. Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ. PS. Gregs, website, www.greggblasinggame.com |

Fish Morro today with daughter and one of her friends on board, they slept while we caught two Sams 9 and 12lbs. 150ft of water 90 down. Had one Thresher eat everything for a nice short run, then later lost a big one that I thought was another shark due to the run and bend. It popped off in about 30seconds thinking I was bit off on the grind I got hit again. Another great run then spit. Wound up my Apex in tact with no line issues, bla bla bla, oh well just a farmer at heart! Headed in at 10:30 with a limit. |

Josh et al; The inside weather is difficult to determine when it is blowing on the outside. You just never know when the wind will make to the inside. John Lindsey's forecast is for the inside at Diablo Canyon and is by far the most reliable but weather is weather ! This is John's report that just arrived. Fresh to strong is 20-25 mph. " Light to gentle southerly winds will develop during the morning hours increasing out of the northwest to moderate to fresh levels during the afternoon hours. Little change in this pattern is expected through Friday. Fresh to strong northwesterly winds will develop over the weekend, decreasing to moderate to fresh level on Monday and Tuesday. Gentle winds are forecast next Wednesday and Thursday" |

KYLE, buy some beads, and single siwash hooks no. 4/0 or 5/0 dremmel the tip to make it barbless, then tie the hook to the line say 30lbs. leader i use florocarbon not too long, say 28" to 36" long. After you tied the hook to the leader run a bead on the line and then thread the hoochie over the top of the bead. Then tie a quality swivel to the end of the line. You dont make the leader too long on a hoochie because you are using a doger not a flasher, you want the dodger to give the hoochie a SQUID LIKE swimming action Den tincan |

I just returned last night from Eureka. I fished 4 days with limits of salmon to 30 pounds for everyone onboard. On Monday we limited on salmon for 4 people at 8:30 am and ran out to 14 miles for 24 albacore. We got back on the trailer at 2:00 pm best fishing I have ever been into.We tried again on Tuesday but the ocean was real rough so we only made it out 1 mile and I packed up for the long drive to Porterville. If anyone plans to go this week the salmon have been at 8 miles on a 270 heading and the albacore another 6 miles on the same heading. If anyone wants numbers I can pull those up. To chime in on the anchor thread, I personally swear by the claw (Bruce) anchor. Bruce is just a name brand of claw anchor with subtle differences, if any, and a lot more expensive. Years ago I was a deckhand on a 31' commercial boat fishing the outer banks, and we used to anchor almost every night at one of the Channel Islands. In 4 years, and lots of adverse conditions, not once did we drag anchor. The captain, who now has a 46-footer called the Outer Banks, swore by that claw too, and my experience with him sold me. It's important not to forget that salmon trolling as we know it was developed around using steel wire, and for many good reasons. I have caught many fish using wire on downriggers, however, I am one who likes to experiment. Due to differences in this salmon season from previous ones, I can't say definitively that we get bit better with the spectra versus the wire. I personally like it better than wire, and if anyone asks me, I recommend it. Bill: We had gear in the water from 0700-1300, and we got our 1st fish at around 8, then one around 9ish, then another at 11ish, then had a break-off at noon, and finished w/ # 4 at just before 1300. From what I saw and heard, it seemed like the fish bit better on the ebb tide. Good luck if you go this week... you'll get 'em. By the way, what's with the gay one-star votes on some recent posts? |

Don't discount the Horizon Claw anchor at West Marine. It is very inexpensive and works very well. I have used these for a couple of years now in all bottoms and conditions. It has never slipped and resets itself on tide changes. The claw and plow style anchors will allow you to use shorter scope as well. Great for shallow water anchoring. A Claw anchor for your boat is under $100 compared to many hundreds for CRQ, Bruce or Delta. A great bargain in my opinion. Like someone said above be sure to keep your current anchor as a stern or emergency back up. Be sure to use two anchors if the other boats closest to you are. The Channel Islands is a great place. |

Bruce are great, but Delta Fast Set are better rated in ALL conditions/bottoms imo. Check them out. Plus make sure you have the correct anchor roller set up on the bow. With A Bruce it takes a special kind so the thing wont rock back and forth while under way. You want it tight up against that bow roller whatever you choose. Look at the West Marine catelog under anchors, it has some great info and you will see what I'm talking about. http://www.boatersland.com/ledean.html Good luck! |

Hi everyone, My name is Gregg Blasingame. This is my first post on this web site. I just found out about it today from Joe Anderton (BBQ). What a great site! Hey Joe, I can't thank you enough for all the help you have been giving me lately with my boat and Salmon fishing! Thanks to your advice I caught my first Salmon yesterday! 6.5LBs, 22"! THANK YOU!!! I know thats not the biggest one out there but it is VERY BIG TO ME. I tried to change my username on this site to Lucky Dog, the name of "my" boat, but I couldn't. It is my boat if it is running and my Dads boat if it is not! My brother Brent calls it his boat too. We have a 26' Osprey Diesel. I hope we get to keep it as I am just learning how to use it finally after about two years. Joe's advice has really helped out. He has helped me with my fish finder, boat maintenance, Salmon fishing and just about everything. Thanks again Joe! The BBQ boat has a very special place in my heart as I do know the story behind it. I learned of the tragedy long before I was introduced to Joe. I am a photographer and I love taking photos of humpback whales. I took one unbelievable shot that hooked me on whale photography. I never knew how high they could jump until I saw it with my own eyes. You can see it here on my web site: http://www.greggblasingame.com Kevin at Sub Sea Tours is my neighbor and I go with him on his whale watching boat often with camera in hand. I get much good advice from him too. Sometimes I think I ask him to many questions but he is always really cool about it. He is one of the coolest guys I know. Thanks for all your help Kevin! Michelle from Virg's Sport Fishing went with us on our first time out on the Lucky Dog about two years ago. She is a great person and I want to thank her for her help and good advice! I look forward to meeting all of you and maybe we will see you on the water someday. Give me a shout if you see me out there on 68. Over and out, Gregg |

I am thinking of getting a new anchor for my 25' Glastron Cabin Cruiser and was wanting any input as to a good type of anchor for being able to anchor overnight in places such as Santa Cruz Island and Port SLO. I just don't trust the anchor I have now, either need a bigger one or different style. The type of anchor I now have is a traditional type. I do have a Windless. Is a plow type or claw type better? Thanks for any suggestions. Kevin (Katmandu) |
