Mike, Exactly like you'd rig a swimbait. Personally, I use 1-2 & 3 oz bullet type jig heads. That's b-cuz alot of the other rigs have short shaft lengths on the hooks so the hook comes out in front of the dorsl on the 6" gulp. I like the hook to come out about 1/4 behind the dorsl. Fishin' buddies like to tie a traser hook 36" above the jig and use the gulp 'pogy' (4" bait) Works well unless you're into a school of blues. Then it's tougher than snot to get the jig to the bottom. On a regular basis Blackie, I outfish whoever goes with me 4/5 fish to 1 if thry're stubborn and use bait. |

This was in the LA Times today. The article is much longer so if you want to read it all go to the Times "search" and enter Marine reserves. Fishing ban off Channel Islands to expand The U.S. government is placing more waters off the Channel Islands off-limits to anglers. By Kenneth R. Weiss August 9, 2007 The federal government will announce today that it has permanently banned fishing from nearly 150 square miles around the Channel Islands, expanding a network of marine reserves that now make up the largest cluster of no-fishing zones in the continental United States. The action nearly doubles the amount of ocean off-limits to fishing in waters surrounding the five Channel Islands off Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. But it leaves nearly 80% of the area open to sport and commercial fishing. The announcement wraps up more than eight years of public debate, scientific study and bureaucratic roadblocks to expanding a cluster of already protected areas in state waters, which extend three miles from the islands, into surrounding federal waters. |

Wow... check out the latest Terrafin shot! The warm plume that is over the Santa Lucia bank is coming right up thru Arguello Canyon. Also be sure to check the MB/Avila local offshore view. I'm stuck at work until sometime around the 18th, but if I was home, I would definitely give that water a thorough look. I just hope it's still there when I get home. Call me an optomist, but with bait now at Virg's and warm water as close as 20 miles, I'd burn the fuel. Just my 2 cents... |

bob is right...cannon balls form a small empty pocket in the center while cooling...that pocket fills with moisture over time...if you try to melt one ,that moisture turns to steam with no place to go...it turns into a dangerous bomb....i'd leave them alone. |

Beware of used cannon balls and melting them if they have been in water. melt them one at a time starting in a cool pot. In other words do not put another cannon ball in a pot of molten lead. because the water that inherently gets in around the eyes will cause the lead to explode, and cause burns, ETC. I`m sure you knew that but I wouldn`t feel good sleeping without posting. |

Laukia, We're on the same page on the aggregate per day, i.e., 5 YT's and 5 Albis (10 total / day). What I was attempting to say with my poor wording was a possesion limit of which is actually 3 times the daily if you're on a Sporty for 3 days or more. |

Then Thur. went up 3 mi past the lighthouse for some monster lings & limits of reds & Johnnies. Took me almost 75 minutes to get up there in my skiff but was well worth the trip. Dave |

DAVE We fished right in front of the domes, we were in 120 ft of water , and the choice bait was a 2 oz lime green stripe and glitter bottom 6 inch swim bait, tom was using a purple 6 oz iron . Unfortunatly those swim baits can only be purchased in SD at fishermans landing , wish we had bought more. Trying to get a line on purchasing them now , they are made by MC at least thats whats stamped on the tails. Blackie/Sr |

After no fishing for two and a half weeks , I had to go out. We fished out of PSL for salmon with no luck, started in 160 depth below the red light and worked in to the 140. We trolled up a few mackrel but no luck with the target species. The weather was nice with a roll to the ocean,it did get windy in the afternoon, it was really nice to be back out there though. Now back to work. Good Luck to all who fish this week, Sheryl |

I have nothing to do with the bait scene, butI do happen to know the prices. 1/2 scoop is 15.00 full scoop is 30.00 4 scoops is 100.00. also, if I don't return emails its because i don't have a computer right know. and i don't return posts here for same reason. Also, I dropped my cell phone in the water. I am always on 19 though, I just don't hear my radio when I'm on deck. |

Tim, One problem on that one is the Mexican Government is getting a nice piece of that pie. It sucks and wont happen anytime soon. I saw 14 pens three weeks being towed around at 50 miles out. It is insane what is going on down there. Not to mention all that bait they wrap to feed those fish. |

"Mexican waters, as many here may know, only allow for 5 per angler per day per species with an aggregate of 20 and only 2 of those may be Dodos." It is actually only 10 per day total (in aggregate). |

Per angler, per day. The 25 was determined because of our reduced fishing days here on the Central Coast and north due to weather and fishing opporunity north of Pt. Conception. At least there was some thought and consideration put into it. I, for one, think it's a good and reasonable limit....as much as I hate Guv'ment regulation. It was coming at us sooner or later and under international pressure so this was done on a voluntary basis so we didn't get cornholed by the Feds later on. Mexican waters, as many here may know, only allow for 5 per angler per day per species with an aggregate of 20 and only 2 of those may be Dodos. we're looking pretty good comparatively. All we need now is Mexico to regulate the damned seiner fleet so there will continue to be a recreational fishery to the south....at least for the Bluefin. Like that's gonna happen! |

I think so Tim, the article in Pacific Coast Sportfishing wasn't specific but it seemed implied. The reason for the limit was to give us (USA) bargaining position at the international meetings. And the beat goes on ! |

Hi all - new to the board. Went about 2 to 3 miles below the red can out of PSL. Trolled for 4 hrs - no salmon. Listening to the radio - heard a couple of the guys had a fish or two each - about 120' OTW. Lots of life - bait, whales, seals - some of the biggest bait balls I've ever seen. Most of the guys were in 140' of water. Can't believe there aren't any salmon!! |

I was in Hawaii the last two weeks, so I am out of the loop. Has there been any more salmon action out of Morro Bay lately? I would like to try next weekend. Fishing was slow but OK out of Kawaihae on the Big Island. We caught lots of Mahi mahi in the 20 to 30 lb. range, but could not find the ahi. Also, good ono fishing near shore. Will |

Great news on the bait, now if the wind will just back off. Looks like another week of it for us. The wind at the Monterey buoy is down this morning but the fish seemed to have moved out in the 35-50 mile range. We had a good SST shot here at 6pm yesterday. The break at the elbow is still holding. There is 62/63 degree water just outside and below the PSL buoy area....but this hot water is coming around the corner from the SB channel and in the ten years I have been watching the SST it has seldom if ever held albacore. It needs to be connected to the Rodriguez and I don't think it is. Thanks Joe I will pass it on to Jeff. |

Hello Harrell, Again thank you, for your time and sharing your experience. Two seasons ago we did run into the school type tuna, with the scraped up tails. My buddy called them out as large tight school fish. It was one of those days we caught enough fish we started arguing who was going to bring the next one in. I will study the Chlorophyl, and try to figure out if there is any green showing in the 3/mg. Last year we went thrity miles and the color was light green on the chart. Good temp landed enough fish not to go any further. As to sharing the information with Terrafin, about Chlorophyl, and Salmon. 4 weeks ago it helped us find the fish out front. 6 weeks ago a commercial friend of mine called us in on the shell mound for some great Salmon. I came home and checked it was bright red and yellow. There is no doubt in my mind that it at least shows the dirtiest water around. All our years fishing for Salmon, the most productive water has been the greenest. Not saying Salmon, only run in dirty water, some of the biggest Salmon, we have caught have been in blue water 40 feeet down. I have been tracking this 4 seasons now and belive it helps, or at provides an edge. Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ. |

Good Job Travis I saw you at the launch. We stayed the night and fished today also we were on the striper named Disturbed. We fished Sat & Sun with easy limits of rockies. We went north both days. On Sat we tried for salmon first thing. I think it is safe to say salmon season in Morro is done. |

Joe: Anything less than 1mg/m3 is clean blue water but the real purple blue is lower on the scale. When we are lucky enough to get a good temp and chlorophyll shot at the same time you will see that the two will often overlay with the same general shape. This is the ideal condition and the best place start. Chlorophyll shots can only be made in the early afternoon as the sun must be over the sattellite's shoulder so to speak. It seems that early in the season the cleaner the water the better but later in the season the albacore will venture out of the warmer blue water into the cooler green water. Also later in the season they will generally prefer bait to jigs and hold deeper. Sometimes you will just have to sit and soak bait for hours. Another thing we have noticed is that even if the water is clean and you see clutter on your fishfinder, from the surface down to about 40 feet, the albacore are scarce. An interesting item about albacore that I heard from the big boys; if their tails are ragged and their cheeks are scraped and bruised they are usually in larger schools like a hundred or more and in heated competion for food. It seems to be valid based on my observations. Jeff Gammon, Terrafin, has asked me about chlorophyll vs. salmon so I will forward your observations if it is ok. |

Hello Harrell, Thanks for the come back. Just my curiosity getting the better of me. I understand the temp breaks really are where the fish are. As to the Chlorophyl, my understanding is limited. Milligrams per cubic meter? At 3/mgpcm, is this clear and blue water? Or is there some shade of green? In the past before Chlorophyl, we would find the temp break and start fishing, sometimes it was in the green water. Have you dialed in the Chlorophyl, to know where to start? Do you use the temp break for a starting point or does your decision change because of the Chlorophyl color? There is one thing we use the Chlorophyl, for, finding Salmon. Over the last four years when the fish have been hard to find, I have checked the Chlorophyl, and the color of the water has been bright red and yellow, in the same area we have found the fish. Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ. PS. 4 BAJA. We can not afford to just drive around either. |
