Dude...that is too funny. I've had a touch of tourista while in Baja. No bueno!
We'll be launching the Avocation at 6 a.m. and running down to Purisma on Friday. Should be good, not sure if anyone has fished there in months!
Anyone else want to run down?
lat,
steve

Part 1
Okay, so now for the funny story. It is day one of our Punta Colorado fishing trip and we walk down to the dock which is about 300 yards south of the hotel with everything from hootchies to massive marlin jigs in the 75 lb tackle bag. We have every rod under the sun tied up in bundles so the are capable of being carried by a small tribe of Oxacans on the way to the dock. As we wait for the cruiser Genabra to come pick us up and take us to fishing vallhala, where we will exhaust ourselves on pulling in 100-pound tuna and a few mixed Dorado, I realize one thing. The stomach I have which I had thought of in my younger days as equal to that of a highland billy goat is not liking the attempt to eat absolutely everything available at the Mexican buffet. This is aggravated by the attempt to wash it all down with a mix of tequila, Modelo, and a splash of the local well water that is certified safe to drink by the local water Jeffe. As I stand on the dock waiting for the cruiser I can think of only one thing, does it have a head, a banjo, a bucket, something to rid myself of the alien inside that demands release. As I wait and contemplate the peril of getting a boat with no head, I decide my options are limited. I break for the safety of the porcelain Buddha, which I know, is only a mere 300 yards up the bluff, and beckoning in the room I left only minutes before. I bolt like an antelope fleeing the jaws of a pack of lions with only two things in mind. Get rid of the alien and get back to the boat to get to the fishing grounds before anyone else get there. As I run up the sandy incline I realize a few things, it’s hot, I’m fat, and I can’t charge up a sand dune to kill the enemy the drill instructor said was waiting on the other side, like I did when I was 18 years old. After making it to the room and taking care of the priority business I realize that there is one rod and reel that was left behind. Ah, the perfect excuse, I forgot this rod and went back to get it. Lucky for the rest of you guys, that I was paying attention to the tons of tackle we brought and sacrificed my own well being to go back and get it. As I get back to the dock with the crucial rod and reel, I am jeered by my compadres who think I made the run up the dunes out of my own poor planning. How dare they photograph and ridicule me for going back to get the lucky rod they so carelessly left behind. I board the boat knowing that I am the noble man, having made the run so that we will not be without this one crucial rod and reel when we need it. To be continued…

Punta Colorado fishing was slow last week and we ended three days of fishing with 1 blue marlin hooked and lost, 1, 40 lb class wahoo to the boat and farmed before the gaff, 5 dorado in the box with the biggest at about 40 lbs., 5 small yellow fin in the box and a shit load of bonita released, and several small roosters, needle fish, triggers, and 1 jack cravale released. Good time in baja as always and I will post another post with a funny story that will require some literary work to convey the hilarity. The fourth day of fishing was a no go due to wind and wind wave. The cruiser Valeria broke loose of the mooring and washed on shore just north of the hotel. Bummer for the resort. It looked salvagable but I’m sure the shaft and rudder took some damage. Another Baja adventure.

Yes the tags are easy to see most are just below the dorsal fins , and there is a phone number on the tag as well as the tag # .
Dean
said they would like to know where the fish was caught , lat&Lon if possible , there were a lot of gophers , but also blues, johnny's and lings as well as the greenlings
I would hope the tribune would at least do an article on the effort so the data does get returned otherwise we are wasting a whole lot of time and resources.

A couple of questions on the tagged fish, which I think is the best part of this operation. It will be interesting to see how far these fish wander.

1. Are the tags easy to see ?
2. Where do you turn them in ?

Thanks to John and Harry for their effort on the bait.

Blackie,
Glad you had a good trip today. Thanks for volunteering. I guess I did ignore my lingcod yesterday as it was not that big and I usually throw lings back anyway since I like to eat reds much mo beddah! (I know this will open a can of worms) Anyway, hope we all can get out and find the LFTs this weekend. I'll be out there for tuna or just rock fish either way.

NOW WATCH THE ALBIES SHOW.
We had another great day tagging fish today , we fished just north of the cells we fished yesterday , the area we fished yesterday will be closed and in the MLPA boundaries , today's area will still be open , what I found interesting , comparing the two days yesterday was better than today.
I did tag and release another 26 inch ling for you guys to catch , also tagged and released 5 greenlings, three males and two females.
I fished iron today with a teaser
.
We caught half as many fish today but had less fatalities in the release process .
I am happy that I had a chance to participate in the survey and would be happy to do it again.
For you guys that would like to give it a try check the old posts and contact Leslie at Cal Poly, she has openings on the patriot .
WILL just ignored his big fish HUH .

I think you misunderstood my comments. I was simply trying to comunicate to Sean. I didn't know if he owned the FV Spaniard or if he was a Spaniard with a Northern name. I know the FV Spaniard, it's a beautiful boat, I know it's a stick boat, and when I mentioned stick that harpoon that's just like saying tight lines. There is no bitching coming from me. I like the fishery. If my comments seemed a like bitching, that wasn't my intention, and I apologize.

Let's all go fish

Jocelyn..please don't get nasty with Sean..he bought his boat from a guy who was spanish, thus it was named that way before and, its bad luck to change the name of a fishing boat. As for sticking his harpoon...well being a former swordfisherman myself..I have to have his back on that comment. Maybe you should save your little "bitc%^ comments for somebody that cares!!!

General Question: I would like to chase tuna this weekend but would be just as happy running way north past the light house. I understand that the MPA's take effect September 1st. Is that correct?

If fishing North, would anyone share some Lat/Lon numbers with me.......... or at least give me some depths to fish? My boat has about a 300 mile range so weather permitting, I can reach it.

Thank You

Hi all you fishermen and women,
We went out and 12 of us caught, tagged, and released 400 rockfish. Most of the fish are what you would expect; blues and gophers, but there were some quality reds and lings also caught. We fished shallow water, which ruled out a lot of the big reds. The crew did a wonderful job handling the caught fish and explaining what the purpose of the survey was. I do not think that this project will hurt us fishermen, but it will help dispell the idea that our stocks are dwindeling. Also, it as so nice to meet Blackie, a very cool fisherman.

You guys bashing the commericals don't know what you're talking about. PERIOD !
As for the upcoming scientific studies. The terminal tackle was chosen based upon what charter boat captins, fishing shops and weekend warriors told the survey people.
Mel's post pretty much hit the nail on the head...
It is not a comparison of the average fishermen ... or what other CPFVs are doing. It is going to be a comparison to monitoring done next year ... and the following year ... and the following year. As long as they replicate this study in the same fashion next year, with the same type of fishermen and the same type of gear, in the same exact grid, with the same length of drift ... they will be comparing "apples to apples". Your comments about using experienced fisherman being a "flaw" is misplaced. Your comments about the terminal tackle has the same error. They are not comparing to average conditions ... they are gathering data that will be compared to the same study next year and thereafter ... using the same type of end tackle. I don't think you understand the purpose of this dateline info.

I also will not address this subject any more. The data needs to be gathered ... and I think they are doing it correctly. Whether is will be USED CORRECTLY is another issue.

Paco,
Don't think for a minute they won't limit the commercials, too. It is different in Alaska than down here. Alaska actually likes the commercial fishing industry. The opposite is true here.
There is BIG money now in limits, closures and studies. Look at NCEAS in Santa Barbara. They got $14 million to study the MPA's. Their conclusion?..... need more money and closures. They aren't the only ones on the gravy train. UCSB, NOAA, NFS, and even the inland institution Cal Poly.
They will spend money in studies and lobbying for a few years then conclude they need to limit the commercial halibut fishermen, too. The day will come when NCEAS franchises to Alaska and there will be MPAs there, also.
Kinda pisses you off, though, to spend the money on airfare, guides, lodging to see you get the limit and not them.

Hello fellow pissed off fisherman. I just got home tonight from a 5 day fishing trip in Alaska. In Homer and Deep Creek, we can catch and keep 2 silvers and 2 butts per day. (No size limit.)
But at the start of this years Alaska private/charter fishing season in the South East Area (Includes Sitka, Ketchican, and other fishing towns in this area.), the halibut rules changed for private/charter boaters. They can only keep 1 fish over 34" and 1 under 34". The papers and the commericals rejoiced saying this slot limit would "SAVE" over 544,000 lbs. of halibut per year. What everyone "FORGOT" to mention is that the commercials yearly quota in this area would remain at 84 million lbs. with no size or area restrictions. The next push against private and charter boats is to only allow one halibut per day. So we are not the only area being screwed by the government & commercials. Just thought to let the Central Coast know that it is not the only area taking it on the chin. Paco over and out.

Sorry but you guys really need to go fsihing

Re: The Baseline Discussion

I have been on a couple of these trips on party boats: One fished areas not in a reserve off Santa Barbara. We caught so many rockfish, heavy on browns, that they ran out of tags and stopped tagging the lingcod, which were also plentiful. Second trip was out of Oxnard, and we fished the long-standing CIMNS reserve on the inside of Anacapa. Again we caught a ton of fish and some real impressive reds, lings, and coppers. On the first trip, a marine biologist, who was in charge of data and deflation, was surprised at the number of fish we caught. But he still remained a subsidized advocate of reserves.

I haven’t seen the objectives of the Central Coast trips, but on the two I was on the first objective was to tag and successfully release the fish. They were measured and identified. Those that didn’t survive sinking were kept to be autopsied – age, male or female, etc. As explained to me, the objective was to see how many tagged fish were recaptured over the years, both INSIDE and OUTSIDE the area fished. The measure here - fish movement. In addition to fish movement, growth statistics were to be gathered. NO Restriction was put on gear. Since we were anchored in 135' to 80', I used a 2 oz. Deep Stinger exclusively and was on constantly. It had a treble hook. Others used shrimp flies, some tied above iron, others worked swimbaits, etc.

I picked among the available trips those that would be conducted on the best moon cycles and tides occurring during the fishing hours so I could at least enjoy the action. However, we had to reel up the fish extremely slowly, stopping along the way to allow the rockfish to expel air at various depths.

If these Central Coast trips (and I doubt it) have as an objective comparing NUMBERS caught from year to year on similar trips, then that is bogus science due to moon cycles and tide, currents, spawning periods, tackle (including Gulp), angler skill levels, etc., etc. Maybe someone can post up the objectives upon which the grant was given. There are many ways to conduct baseline studies, and I assume this is the tagging part. Whether any of this will make a difference in adaptive management as the years of reserve life goes forward is debatable, but from my experience any data is better than the data poor conditions that have allowed outrageous claims by the anti-fishing forces, such as the “almost extinct” status of bocaccio in SoCal (they are everywhere and ton of juveniles proves excellent recruitment). Any data is better than no data.

i feel i have to put my two cents in. in the 35 years of fishing, both salt and fresh, i believe fish are territorial. if the food is adequate, they'll stay. i think fish move for spawning purposes and possibly temperature changes. i am saying this because of the previous statements about certain areas that can be depleted of fish populations. they can be if normal to heavy fishing pressure is constant. i have been on the same spots numerous times during the season. those spots are less productive as the season goes on. why is this? it's simple. the more you pull out of a spot, the less there is. simple. i beleive that slot limits along with seasonal closures and the weather will all play a part in conserving this great resource. i also believe in letting some of the big ones go. let them go make little fishes. if we take all the great fish, it will take longer for that resource to regenerate. just thought i had to say this. i love fishing and hopefully we can have this great activity for generations to come. i feel it's up to us to try to use it and conserve it. it is a responsibilty that all of us should abide by. taking pictures is a great way to rememeber your catch. it takes a long time for a fish to reach maturity. i believe it is 4 years for a ling to reach legal length. it only takes minutes to catch and kill them.
