Mike Onieda B, this should give you the info you need on the closure areas. As far as I know they are still not in effect. http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/mlpa/index.html |

The fisheries research trip by Cal Poly tomorrow had 3 cancilations and needs some fishermen to catch rockfish. The trip is free, you will learn how data is collected. It leaves from Patriot tomorrow morning. If interested call Leslie at 441-4953. I spoke to a commercial fisherman that fished the same numbers we caught albacore on Saturday for only 1 fish today. It looks like the berak has moved way in from where it was. Bob Hather |

Fished with Patriot today doing the scientific survey. We fished up off Montana de Oro. Very nice day on the water, but a very slow day of fishing. Only 1 keeper ling and no reds. Mostly gophers, with a few blues, blacks, treefish and kelpgreenling thrown in. I guessed we fished some of the same areas that they fished last week when they got 400 for the day. I'm guessing we had a little more than 125 fish today, but not sure. Very well run project. The scientist on board have been tagging fish for several years along the coast. The did a great job. Any fish that was bloated (barotrauma) was either deflated or put in a milk crate and sent down. I'll be fishing again tomorrow. Hopefully the fishing will improve. It was great to meet Mel, Blackie, Greg, and Paul today. Hope to get to meet some more folks tomorrow. later, steve |

Looks like we have 60 degree fairly clean water at and below the old PSL buoy down to the platforms. Could be fish as close as 20 miles out of PSL Tomorrow's weather is looking pretty good also and there is bait at Morro and PSL. |

Jeff, you should have a anchor to keep you off the rocks in the event that you loose power and there is wind or current. Current flares and daytime signal are required by CG. They have an expiration date printed on them. A sea anchor / drift sock can help extend you fishing day for rockfish if the wind shows up early. Life Jackets and throwable PFD with a line attached. Navigation charts are also a good idea even with the GPS. Once you become dependent on it, it will fail. Good compass, portable waterproof VHF radio, and awarness of a return compass heading for where you are fishing. Sometimes you can leave the breakwater in clear weather and be socked in with zero visibility fog in a matter of minutes. hope I didn't scare you off the water. |

Jim, I fished out of SB last week. Lots of life in the water right now. Some hailbut being caught as well as barracuda, bonita and an occasional thresher shark. Bounce balling for halibut can be tough if the macks are around. Water temps are around 62. Saw some seabass cruising in the schools of sardines but could not get them interested. Galen has had bait but you might want to give him a call if you are going mid week 805 280-5125. |

NWS appears in allignment with UCAR on Tuesday with 10-kts for outer waters so I may be looking for an "Experienced" crewman (exp in small boats fishing albacore) to share related expenses and work on a Tuesday albacore run from Morro. Will likely depart Morro around 4am and fish late if Virg's still has live bait.. ? Any other boats going to be in the hunt? Confirmed report. A private boater caught 8 albacore fishing at the Rodriguez on Saturday. Clean, blue water and lots of fish up crashing around but not overly eager to bite. Full-moon thing and he was done by 2pm and did not stick around to fish late. This is the same batch of water that's attached to the Donut. If anyone is interested in possibly buddy-boating out to the Rod on Tuesday give me a shout. Our best bet would be departing from Santa Barbara, about a 70-mile run. Live bait has been available. Most recent forecast is calling for 10 kts after midnight becoming 10 to 20-kts from the west in the pm hrs Tue. If we have no takers, will likely trailer north the 3-hrs to fish Morro on Tue. |

Another good day of fishing out of PSL, with big sardines and pretty flat ocean, it was all good. Had to try for salmon at least one more time, we put in an hour or so around the light house to the red light with no luck then headed up to the pea patch for one halibut and cabazon. The weather is changing for sure, with a litle wind but still pretty flat. Made it an early day with my fishing fix satisfied, now back to work. Good luck to mid-week fisherman. Sheryl |

Awesome Mark. That is great that the bite turned on today. Or was it your secret weapon? Must have been a short day for you! One more thing Tim, lingcod don't have swim bladders...so you don't need to send them down with a weight. Just release them and they'll swim back down just fine. I'll be out Monday and Tuesday with Patriot for the study. Anyone else heading out? later, steve |

We left PSL a little after 6 am. Made the run to Purrisma on flat glassy water. Put the gear in at 85' and had 10 reds and bolina in less than an hour. Moved into 65' between the silos and got another 10, 2 cabazon, bolinas and reds. Also got 3 lings, 14#, 12# and a 26" to end the day. Beautiful running south and watching the sun come up on flat water. Reminds me of Mexico on the Cortez. Mark/Mistress |

Great Job on the fish everybody. That is awesome. Sounds like a nice body of fish! Now if they'll just move in at least another 20 miles! Tim...a fish that big is probably @ 15-20 years old and wouldn't be very good eating (probably very wormy). Lingcod do try to eat everything in sight, but they can't eat really big rockfish. They remove the small, sick, injured rockfish...thus leaving behind the big, healthy rockfish! Natural Selection in action. The #1 reason to release that fish is that it was amazing to catch it. Killer fight, never knowing who is going to win. The awe in seeing that monster rise from the deep, the anxiety in getting the net around it. The disbelief in the size of the mouth...and laughter when it spit up another 10" gopher! (not the one that it hitchhiked in on). I'd much rather catch that fish again sometime and experience the thrill all over again. Ryan Moore hooked something bigger down there last year, but we never saw it. We still talk about that fish! Patriot will give someone a free trip if they release big lings! Anyhow...sometimes it is ok to release big fish if you don't need to eat it. Mark Godfrey, how did you do down there today? best fishes, steve |

What a beautiful day out on the water out of PSl today. Plenty of boats were able to run to Purisma and get their fish. We trolled for hailbut down at the coke plant to mussell in 120 ft., for no luck. Then fished mussell for some nice rock fish. Perfect trip home smooth running, just the kind of ocean we were looking for all season. Back out tommorrow. Congratulations to the Seeker and Windfall on their albacore. |

The albacore bite was consistant all day until about 2:00pm. Water was flat calm, bait and birds everywhere. The temp break was a hard 4 degrees from 60 to 62 mi on a 210 out of Morro. The water turned from green to blue at the temp break. We wound up with 13 mixed in size: 2 were 12 lbs then we got some 20+ then several were 30lbs+. My bait didn't do so well overnite so all but one were jig fish for us. The boat that had fresh bait from Deke nailed the fish today. If you can get out tomorrow do it; conditions are great. All the fish came within 2 mi of the temp break up and down the line. Bob Hather |

The three boats fishing albacore today finished up with about 50 fish ! The numbers 35/42 were about ten miles closer than yesterday. I will let Hather give you the details. Tomorrow's forecast is not as good as the last two days with maybe 15kts in the afternoon. |

Hi all - great weather, tough fishing....bad weather, good fishing. Fished from above Buchon to front of Pecho in 100 to 150' of water. 3 guys for limit and a half of cods. Three nice reds, 1 keeper ling and some starries and gophers. May try to bomb it to Purisima tomorrow if the weather continues. If only the weather was like this more often!!!! |

Steve; do you really think we need anymore lingcod out there? They eat anything and everything that moves including their own young and crabs. Besides you would have certainly had the wopper. I release undersize fish with a hook and weight rig, but keep the legal ones. Just my two cents and don't mean to rial anybody up. We should each do our own thing. HMMM, I think I've seen that saying many times hanging on some Hippy's wall, including yours truely! LOL; Tim |

Just talked to Seeker about 10 miles out heading to the same area as yesterday. Jim said that the only trailers at Morro were his and Hather's. Our Purisima report is the same as Steve's except for the 30 # ling, nice fish! The weather looks really good for another couple days at least. The clouds are forecast to clear out today so should get some SST/chlorophyll to see if the water is coming this way for us "nearshore" fishermen. |
