Did it look something like this? We caught several off the Pea Patch and off the Coke plant last year in September & October. I guess they really come in this time of year.
Nice halibut...good job!

If they looked kinda like a Orca with a big dorsal fin...they were probably Risso's Dolphin.
I saw some out of PSL in May and thought they were Orcas for a while.

Once again BIG thanks to the Billy Boy for a great scoop of bait yesterday! Fished up near the ab farm till about 3pm when we finally had enough of the wind. We were about 4 fish short of limits for 3. Nice mix of reds to 6.5lb and some big gophers, 4 26-28" lings and a 22.5lb. halibut. Tossed back a number of blues and blacks and the rookies with me lost a couple big fish by having drags too tight and thumbing the spool lol. All fish came in 50-60'.

First fish of the day worked me... about a 5' shark. Not sure what type. Kind of looked like a leopard but was solid brown on top and white underneath. Anyone know what kind it was? I was thinking smoothhound but don't know my sharks that well. Caught one last trip also. Released both of them... are they edible? Should I have kept em?

Great day on the water... mix of blinding sun and dense fog all day long.

Jim,
Did your ling look something like this ?
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r279/antikbuff/MVC-001FF.jpg

We've had a few come up like this... Seals getting a 'free' meal on us. You may not have seen the seal (usually seals) but they were there.
I just started using a 'drift sock' on my last 2 outings. Sure is a heck of a lot easier than having to compemsate using the outboard all day.
Congratulations on doing so well.

Oh 2 more things we had something chop a ling cod in half right bellow his gills... I have heard seals will do it but there were none in sight for the hour we fished the area...

also had a pod porpoises that had the same paint job or markings as a killer whale. they circled, banged and just used the boat as a toy for about 15 minutes.... What are they called, I would like to look em up on the internet.

Dave,

Fished a couple miles north of the light house today in 90-110 foot. Found those suspended fish you were talking about....several times when gaffing or helping others on the boat I would reel up 5 to 10 cranks so I would not get snagged....I had better luck off the bottom than on it. Had a lot of big reds today... Started drifting too fast by about 1130 so I went to shallow water to finish out my limits on misc colors.... I should have thrown out the drift sock... All the quality fish were in the deeper water.

If you go tomorro, wear wet weather gear as there was some thick wet fog.

California’s Marine Life Protection Act Launched as First Region
Opens

California’s landmark Marine Life Protection Act will go into effect
from Pigeon Point to Point Conception on Friday Sept. 21. This action
will establish a Central Coast Region, composed of 29 marine protected
areas (MPAs), from San Mateo County to Santa Barbara County. The MPA
designation significantly increases the protection that marine life living
in the area receives. These protections include long-term safe havens
for rockfish and other bottom fishes, migration corridors for salmon,
and a diverse environment that abalone, kelp and numerous marine mammals
and seabirds need to survive.

“These new marine protected areas will help us preserve some of
California’s most biologically significant marine habitats while also
allowing for recreational and commercial fishing,” said Secretary for
Resources Mike Chrisman, who noted that the central coast is the first of
five regions that will eventually lead to a network of MPAs along the
state’s 1,100-mile coastline.

The 29 sites within the Central Coast MPA series represent
approximately 204 square miles (roughly 18 percent) of state waters in the Central
Coast Study Region (see list below). The Department of Fish and Game
(DFG) has developed a comprehensive Web site at
www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/mlpa/ccmpas_list.html that includes regulations and detailed maps of each of
the newly formed MPAs.

This final network of Central Coast MPAs is the result of a landmark
unanimous vote in April by the California Fish and Game Commission. It
represents the culmination of a two-year public process that began in
February of 2005. The Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Program was
designed to advance the conservation of marine resources for their long-term
sustainable use while also enhancing outdoor recreation and ocean
research opportunities along the coast. The MLPA process was invigorated as
a public-private partnership with the Resources Agency, the Resources
Legacy Fund Foundation, the California Marine Life Protection Act
Initiative, DFG and the Commission.

In addition, Gov. Schwarzenegger formed the California Ocean Protection
Council and called for the development of a comprehensive Ocean Action
Plan as part of the administration’s progressive ocean management
efforts, and in response to the Pew and U.S. Ocean Commissions’
reports on the health of our oceans.

The process to designate the Central Coast MPAs involved the work of
the Regional Stakeholder Group, and Science Advisory Team, an oversight
role of the Blue Ribbon Task Force, and included significant DFG
analyses and recommendations. Nearly 60 public meetings were held in the
development of the MPA proposals. Thousands of written and verbal public
comments were also received and considered during the process.

The network of marine protected areas include:
● 15 State Marine Conservation Areas (SMCA), which limit recreational
and commercial fishing.
● 13 “no-take” State Marine Reserves (SMR); a total of 85 square
miles and;
● One State Marine Recreational Managed Area (SMRMA); Morro Bay State
Marine Recreational Management Area, where recreational fishing is
limited or restricted.

Ninety percent of the central coast area remains open to fishing.
(Note: This percentage includes the limited fishing that is allowed in the
SMCAs and SMRAs as well as the areas outside the series of MPAs).

DFG’s marine wardens will patrol and enforce the new MPAs, and
continue to monitor fishing activities in other open areas of state waters
(shore to 3 miles).

A main goal of the MLPA is to utilize these MPAs as research sites
where scientists can gain a greater understanding of California’s marine
and coastal environment and how marine animals and plants interact with
little or no disturbance by people.

“MPAs are designed to protect special places and ecosystems and
provide a unique opportunity for scientific study,” said Dr. Amber Mace,
executive director of the California Ocean Science Trust (CalOST).

Mace also serves as the science advisor to the California Ocean
Protection Council. “We are now developing a long-term monitoring system to
better understand MPA effects and to help inform how they are managed
over time. MPAs can help the state’s most important marine ecosystems
to thrive, while potentially enhancing other uses such as wildlife
viewing and fishing,” she said.

DFG and the Ocean Protection Council have provided $2 million to launch
a variety of research projects designed to gauge the ecological and
socioeconomic effects of the MPAs. Recreational anglers are playing a
major role in this overall research endeavor by looking at fish stocks and
the number of fish that inhabit local waters.

“Scientists working directly with anglers will study the before and
after effects of the marine protected areas by comparing changes in fish
populations that occur after the MPAs take effect,” said Don
Maruska, strategic advisor and facilitator of the California Collaborative
Fisheries Research Program, which includes the cooperative efforts of
university researchers, DFG and NOAA fisheries biologists and fishing
experts.

The second phase of the MLPA Initiative, which will cover the North
Central Coast region from Pigeon Point (San Mateo County) north to Alder
Creek (Mendocino County), is already underway. For more information
visit the DFG MLPA Web page at www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa.

Went out of PSL this a.m. to drift for halibut at the pea patch. No luck but did catch a ling there. Fished out front till the wind got going around noon, the drift sock did buy us about a hour of extra fishing, and another ling. We will be out for a few hours in the morning to round out the weekend fishing.

Hello all you guys,
I'm off to the Hollister Ranch for the weekend. I used to catch tons of halibut off the beach with krocs and swimbaits when we had a parcel down there. I will try it again along with surfing what is supposed to be a good south swell. Warm water, hot weather, good surf, and incredible fishing; it does not get any better. I will report on Tuesday. Hope to get out after LFT Thursday or Friday next week.
Aloha,
Will

A wise man live,s another day.
Yes indeed its a real eye opener to be out there and be the tallest thing , and the worse thing is there is no where to RUN , and your right there is only one person that can help and you better be in his grace .
Another story from IDAHO,
Last year when we were fishing the derby , a friend of my brothers was trolling during a storm , a bolt hit his 8 ft graphite rod and blew it up , it now hangs over his fireplace as a reminder, end of story
theres always tomorrow , you are going to have to give me your schedule , maybe we can get out together , IF THE WEATHER will allow.

Dave;
I only look at the forecasts and computer models for the albacore water. There are a lot of times when the inside water is fine, when the outer water is not, at least until noon or so. John's (PG&E) forecast is the one to look at for the inside. If John says it is bad on the inside then it is usually bad every where. When there is lightning like last night and today the ocean is not the place to be even if is flat calm !!

Made me nervous too. I was up @ 3:30 am ready to go and made the decision to stay home after I looked at the radar dopler for San Simeon. Better to be safe & able to fish another day than to foolishly ignore mother nature and test her fury.
Harell says it'll be blowing now until next Tue. So I reckon we'll be lookin' fer a window on Wed/Thurs next week. I love it up there...

The PG&E Report

ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION:

Subtropical moisture streaming northward around a high pressure system
over western Arizona towards our area produced numerous thunderstorm and
rain showers (at times heavy) over the Diablo Canyon area. The Diablo
Canyon Ocean Lab rain gauge recorded 0.12" of precipitation. Weather
stations in Los Osos and Morro Bay have recorded over 0.33" of rain.

An unstable atmosphere this morning will continue to produce thunderstorms
and scattered rain showers through 1300 this afternoon.

Note: Thunderstorms can be accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and rain
showers (at times heavy).

The subtropical moisture which cause these thunderstorms will finally migrate
out of our area by late this afternoon, leaving behind partly cloudy and warm
weather with Paso Robles reaching 101 degrees today.

Hot inland temperatures will continue through Tuesday. Coastal temperatures
are expected to cool to near normal readings over the weekend with
increasing coastal low clouds and fog and onshore winds.

Everingham Bros Bait Co. has been making bait for almost 50 years. They supply the San Diego sportfishing fleet and the private boaters and pretty much set the standard for live bait sales in California. A full scoop of bait is 10 lbs.

Depending on how far north you're headed... Just north of the lighthouse (About 3 mi.) Where there's new construction going on, on shore. 80 to 120 ft of water, You'll drift over massive amounts of fish. If you don't get bit when you first get down... set a rod up with a pearl or white swimbait, 4-6 oz weighted head and run it 5-10 ft above bottom. There's big reds, vermillion and 3 to 5 Lb johnnies all thru that area that are suspended. Good luck. Wish I could've made it out too...
