Jim,

approximately 10 nautical miles or 11.5 land miles using WGS84. if you are traveling north-south. 8.2 nautical miles or 9.4 land mile if you're going east-west at latitude= 35-10N.

North/South is always 60 nautical miles. East/West at latitude 35 is 47 nautical miles. The farther north you go, the closer the east/west grid lines get to each other.

General question:

While looking at the map, how far is it between grid lines? Example, how many miles between 35.00 and 35.10 or 121.00 and 121.10

Thanks

Mike Carnes and I left the dock around 0630 and headed up coast expecting a smooth ride - man were those waves close (but small). Went as far as Cambria - had great fishing - kept 14 fat reds, one olive and one blue. Threw back a load of blues and gophers. Only brought up three lings - all shorts (and Mike's sea star). Wind was moving us along too fast, so decided to head for the barn - great ride home (26 mph).

Hey Tim. I saw the Princess out of Virg's got 45 albies on Sunday. I haven't called the landing, but I saw it Monday morning and it's in the Princess' counts for the year. By the way, thanks for all the info on the other board when I was looking for a new radar a month or so ago. I went with the Furuno 1834. I'm pretty sure that's what you suggested. What a sweet set-up. Now, if I could only dial in my heading sensor.

Jim, the fall is my favorite time to fish the Channel Islands. When the wind turns offshore, the seas flatten and the reds at Miguel are hard to beat. Also, yellows seem to go on the chew around Anacapa and Cruz. I've been hearing roomers they are starting to go. Best of all is the fall calico bite. The fish seem to really get aggresive, especially down the Ventura County coast. Nothing like throwing iron to boiling calicos. It's a blast.

As usual (And it's not ment in a negative way)
Blackie,

Harrell is absolutly correct. The water port back flushes the water out of the engine. Meaning ? It'll come out the pee-hole weather the engine is running or not. Possibly giving a 'false' indication as to a impellor being good.

I hate to admit ignorance... But I'm 100% guilty of my having to be towed back to the dock last saturday. I used a green colored gas can that I thought had gas in it, added 1 3/4 gal's of super to the 2 gal can and put it into my main tank. I got 13 miles from the launch before the carb jets wouldn't allow the 'WATER' thru.
Dumb-dumb-dumb... And I was blaming the guy I bought the motor from. Not only that... The 1st time out, I thought the prop hub was spinning, giving less & less power. I didn't know it was cavatation the whole time. (New motor to me...these 4-strokes) Lessons learned tho... Don't have to make the same mistakes' twice.

Jim,

If you want to see what is going on in Monterey, log onto coastsidefishingclub.com and you will see all of the post for Albacore and everything else they have up there. They have been catching Tuna sice early June. The only thing that slows them down is the wind and the swell.Monterey is not a place you want to be if the wind and swell comes up.We have done well on both Salmon and Tuna this year. They have nice launch facilities out of both Moss Landing and Monterey. The tuna are a little further out now and it looks like santa Cruz is a little closer to launch to the Tuna grounds, but this all can change in a few days.Earlier in August the currents where just 12 to 30 miles from shore and that was real sweet. We usually don't get really going on Tuna until late September and October off Morro Bay and the grade of Tuna are usually bigger here. Some years they are easily 40LBS plus fish and many pushing 60 LBS.The wind is the only problem, we shall see this year.Welcome aboard.

I will keep you posted if I hear anything. Also, I am interested in the chanel islands...What happens in October/November down there?

Jermey,

I dont think Virges has been out all season bro. Must be a typo or something. We had 17 a couple of weeks back.

On a side note, that water sure did clean up (Not that it matters) and get warm quick. When that wind backs off we might have the right conditions to go look. It also moved inside a tad.

Welcome to the board.

I'm new to this board. Fish mostly the Channel Islands and south, but I'm waiting for a weather window to run for albies up your way. I noticed Virg's picked up 45 albies Sunday 9/9. Does anyone have any info on this or know where they found them?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Blackie:
I think when you use the hose connection it is a backflush and puts flow and pressure in the opposite direction to the pump flow. This would not be a good thing with the motor running.
Download the manual for your engine and you will know for sure.

Harrell, Jim_G, Mike,
Are all Hondas' the same ? The reason I bought mine was because the 1995 model is around 15 Lbs lighter than the newer models. What does that 15 Lbs amount to ? additional missions for newer models ?

Why is the law so stupid. when it comes to fish. It is conceivable that a person could catch 3 protected fish, that will die when released. Before one is caught that is ok to keep. Adding to the rock fish decline. I feel you keep your first fish, that equals a limit. No matter what kind they are. How many here have caught a fish that swallowed the whole hook and removal kills it. Or a seagull gets the fish. Each time a protected fish is returned to uncertain results we take another fish for our limit. To me that is stupid when we are trying to increase the fish stocks. Can somebody explain why this reasoning by fish and game makes sense?

Trailered up to Moss and fished LFT on Sunday. Ran to the outside break 37.10 123.15 (64-65.5), dead slow all morning. We left the fleet at 12:00, with 0 fish in the boat, and turned back west to a cooler break we past on the way out (60.5-62.5). Hooked a double instantly 22# & 26#. Then another jig strike 20# with a bait fish 20#. We had one last jig strike with a huge 38# hog and a 25# bait fish. No hits for 5 hours, an hour of pure adrenalin and then it shut off. That's tuna fishing I guess? The closer #'s were 3700 12250. Flat calm day with big fish and lots of blood on the deck.

Thought I was done but I guess not.

Here is John's lates wind forecast;

Moderate northwesterly winds will develop along our coastline this
afternoon, decreasing tonight through tomorrow morning.

Northwesterly winds will increase to moderate to fresh levels on Tuesday,
further building to fresh to strong levels on Wednesday through Sunday.

Today's models runs are indicating northerly (offshore) winds developing
next Monday.

This is from the Coastside political board;

If it happens it looks like oct 1. I would not concern yourself with rumor or the street. We have positioned Coastsiders in the know from the GAP to the Council. Ask and you will get a straight answer.Yesterday at the state conference call prior to the PFMC meeting next week, CDFG disclosed that recreational fishermen are about to go over our take of yelloweye, canary, and minor nearshore rockfish. At the rate we are going (driven by the lack of a salmon season) we will exceed our allowable take by mid Sept. The Council is going to have to take action to close the fishery on October 1, unless there is a way to find some "leftover" fish in other sectors.

Critical are the canary and yelloweye - both of them no-retention fish. So what we are looking at is the discard mortality rate - which the state assumes is 42%. I'm not sure where they get the estimate for total discards from - probably from observation on the CPFV's - something we need to find out. Application of 42% has long been the state's approach.

We are working on it

--------------------
Thanks for your club support. Our fishery is too important not to care.

Fished Arguello Canyon but only scratched a few. 25 lb. but only two jig stops. Didn't have bait. Managed to stick a sword, though. Weather was perfect.
121 and 34 30.
Poor report on the Rodriquez, also. Maybe more north. Go get 'em!

Mike (SweetPea),
Hey, how deep did you get those 'buts? Were you bounce-balling? Just curious where they might have been hiding since we didn't get a sniff yesterday.
thanks for the info.
steve

Way to go Mike ! You'll have fish and chips for a year.

Great SST/Chlorophyll shots yesterday. There is 65 degree water 28 miles due west of MB that looks clean but slightly off color. This area connects to the south and to the west. Maybe we can get some of those fish from the northwest that are being caught out of Monterey in big numbers. The cleanest water is south about 30 miles from Avila at Pt. Arguello out to the Donut. The bad news is we will probably have 15kts of wind the rest of the week.

i know how you feel steve, me and my buddy put in some time on the butts and nothing. we worked all the hot spotts from cambria south and even bounce balled for a while and zip. i did notice that the water temps are still not up enough for a good spawn run but who really knows. will be going down to mex to my place next week for a dorado run. looks like they have pushed in to north of bay of la romedios area with fish pushing 30 pounds. awe warm water fishing!!!
