Here's a bit of drama. I'm scared on some level every time I launch, and I've made hundreds of trips off the west coast, fear is good, it keeps you wired and on top of things. best of all it keeps you comming back for more. |

One comment on swell times; I always use the average time not the dominant period. When you are out in it you will see both the long period and the short ! It is the short ones that will be the most miserable. |

Quickscat; Since the satellite is in polar orbit we only get two passes a day; early morning and early evening. It is a RADAR system and needs the correct angle to shoot so some times we only get one shot a day. The latest one was around five this morning, our time, and it shows about 10-15kts in the area of the donut so with 6ft at 6 sec it is probably pretty sloppy out there. |

All-coast? Pretty tactless approach there John. I would expect better and some measure of respect toward a fellow offshore fisherman who also spends a significant amount of time fishing off Morro down to Conception and Miguel. I just put two seperate back-to-back 100-mile runs off Conception to the 948-spot last week and one out to the Donut and 1908 three wekke prior so we have a decent idea on how to read the weather. I use at least 15 links/weather sites to measure this. And yes, always be cautious with weather off Morro and anywhere offshore you go. Like I posted last night, good chance today "might" see some fishable conditions out at the Donut for those with a good boat. Still 0-knots at both the 21m Pt. Sal and West Buoy with residual lump laying down. Moorefish out. |

pretty funny mike....that area is 21 miles SOUTH of arguello....a whole different ocean with a nice ride home downhill to SB...i'm sure it looks good, i bet it looks good 21 miles east of arguello too.. however, the donut is 50 miles WEST/NW of pt. arguello and over 30 miles west of arguello bouy..kind of looks like a butt kicking to me today..7'@7sec is no picnic when you're way out there and looking straight at it to get home. post all the bullshit you want, but the man made the right choice . |

Since we don't have any buoy wind reports for the outer waters any more here is a link to the satellite wind map. Quickscat. It is very accurate but not timely. It will tell you what the wind was a few hours prior but not current. http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/quikscat.php?station=46011 |

tesatoo, right now it's about 2:30 am on sunday...pt arguello bouy is showing a significant wave hieght of 7.5'@ 6.6 sec...put any wind on top of that and it will get down right ugly..then you have a long way back against it....maybe if the fish were closer. good luck if you go and i hope you pull it off, but i'd advise against it |

Sunday looks fishable (if you're in a good boat) for those hoping for shot at albies and the rare Hather Opah. That's Sunday before more onshore flow haunts us. Further south, at 11am this morning, the Break has moved into the Donut and within 8-miles of San Miguel Isle/49-miles from Santa Barbara Hbr entrance. NWS = 10 to 15-kts for the am, Sunday. May be bumpy in the am but fishable. So 805) tuna may be now unless you have some range and time to wait and hope. |

Greetings, Fished PSL today. Got a scoop of HUGE chovies from deke and headed up to the Pea Patch. No swell, but a little wind chop from outside. Glassy and nice until about noon when the switch turned on and we got blown off by 1 pm. Got 1 23" and let go a 20.5" halibut. Fish were in 30-50' of water. Kept two nice blacks and released 5-6 short lings. The halis are still out there and the bait is KILLER!!! best fishes, steve |

Thanks, Cloud. CCSE releases about 130,000 King Salmon out of pens at Avila every year. Until I got on their BOD, I always thought the DFG gave them to us....little did I know. CCSE has to buy them every year! So, folks - anything you all can do is thoroughly appreciated. This year's annual dinner event is at the South County Regional Center in AG. Feel free to email me at kkikuchi@sbcglobal.net or call the CCSE office at (805)473-8221. Thanks. |

I am sure others beside myself hope that you have or will send them directly to the "Powers that be" at Pigs Goats & Elephants (referring to the PG&E current mgmnt team), preferably on your formal Company Letterhead. I have been a long time surfer along the Central coast for over 25 years and unfortunately my business consumes a lot of electricity. My electric bills can reach over $3000 a month. The reason why the PG&E wave forecasts is so renowned, its simply the best wave forecast anywhere! The National Weather service, Suefline, Wetsand and every other forecast service dose not compare. There is always a chance that PG&E is going trip units during a big wave event. Can you imagine what the outcry for the general public is going to be if this happens after all of this? A friend who works at Diablo Canyon told me that it cost ratepayers millions of dollars a day for replacement power when Diablo is off line. Add the extra cost of possible damage to the power plant and the increase oversight by the NRC-It all makes little since that PG&E would take this risk. For what, to layoff one guy? As a ratepayer, I should not have to pay extra on my electric bill because of poor management decisions during a big wave event, it's completely unfair, Plase keep you wave forecast guy. |

I was on the fish and game web site looking up the closure areas and was curious about when the salmon season closed, I found out that this year according to the 2007 supplement page 12 section 4 the it is open till October 7th. There was said to be a 25lber caught while rock fishing and released out of psl on wenesday. We did troll on thurs. for a short, really short salmon. There was more bait than I have seen all season, If you are tired of cathching rock fish you can always give trolling a try again. |

Fished west of Miguel Wednesday with the fleet, started working around 10 and 41 and worked up and out, then down and in. Lots of warm water and lots of blue whales...incredibly beautiful. No fish for me. Very little bait out there. Should be a bunch of krill, owing to the large number of blues (with breaching and finning humpies for good measure...but didn't see any. Water was very warm, even with the daytime heating of the surface....67 and up. |

Bob, of course it was an Opah, they follow you like cats follow a cat lady ! Some people got it some don't. Glad you found some fish. The forecasts, minus John's, all indicate wind for the next week starting this afternoon. The wind is already up at Conception. Hopefully when it lays down the water will be closer and we will get a couple more shots at the albacore before the winter storms start. |

Well I thought that I wouldn't have a chance to chase tuna until after my isalnd trip but it turned out that the tuna decided to show up just outside Miguel. Stayed in Cuylers on Miguel Tues night. Clear night no wind, beautiful. Ran out side Miguel Wen. to 34.10 120.40 and ran west to about 120.54 Worked with about seven other boats in the area. Pretty slow pick on the fish as Mike Moore reported. Thanks for the info on the water Mike, wish I could have reported the fish crashing the boat but we were unable to get any to go for us. We did see jumpers and lots of bait. Water up to 66 and LOTS of blue whales. Things look good out there the fish just need to go on the feed. Weather and trip was fantastic. Good going getting some Bob! BTW we saw a jumper in the cooler water inside Saturday on the way out to the warmer stuff that was due west. Fished it for a little while with no luck then headed out. Maybe there are more fish on the inside than we realize! I imagine the boils were albies even if your biter was an opah??? |

We ran to the donut where the temp jumped from 60 to 64 in a mile. Our first jig strike came on a purple rapalla and we add two bait fish. A second jig strike came around 1:30 but came unbuttened. The fish were up to 31 lbs. Coming in we baited a kelp patti at 15.5 mi in 60 degree water and got bit instantly and there were some other boils on our chum. Mel fought the fish for about 1/2 hour before the hook pulled. We think it was a large opah. Bob Hather |

Just think, if only one person or boater is saved thru Johns forecasts it is well worth it. P.G.E. makes enough money in the power plant to keep him on. As john C. stated they have killed enough fish to last all eternity so if P.G.E. were smart they would keep the boating comunity at least happy. tincan |

as a commercial fisherman, i will sorely miss john's forecasts....i feel like somebody stole my favorite and most used tool in my toolchest....noaa (know a nothing) forecasts for this area suck...if you are 40 miles offshore and cruising, i guess noaa might guess right...but for the coast off the irish hills, john's forecast was paramount. i will definitly call , write, or e-mail everybody i think could help get his position reinstated......i'll also urge the port san luis commercial fishermans assn. and harbor commissioners to do the same...heck, if that doesn't work, mayby a rock wraped in a note will get somebodies attention. pg&e has taken enough from this fishing community...not only do they chase away anyone within a mile of them, but they've been killing billions and billions of rockfish larvea for many years now...i think keeping john's position isn't too much to ask in return. this is something we just can't stand for, john costello |

I was listening to the radio and heard about John Lindsey today, it was said that a new vice president for PG&E John Conway was the reason for the Layoffs. His position was considered no longer needed by someone who has probably never been here. They were suggesting that people email and or call some head guys with PG&E. They suggested that people do it in a polite way and that John has no knowledge of us calling on his behalf. The number they gave out was for a Pete Darby who is supposed to be high up in PG&E, His phone number is 415-267-7118. The CEO of PG&E is Bill Morrow his email is wtm4@pge.com. One thing I see with this besides the valuable boating information is a saftey issue for Diablo and not to mention the public relations aspect of John. Who knows maybe if they here from enough of us they will consider reinstating his position. Kevin (KATMANDU) |
