The weather is coming down on all the buoys right now and the forecast, except for some residual swell, looks good for tomorrow and even better tues-wed. The chlorophyll for yesterday is cleaner than it was friday and the hard break is at 40 miles from Morro and a little less from PSL This looks like the all or nothing chance for this year ! Tuesday is the best for me so I hope you guys find them tomorrow. I will be monitoring chan 68. Good Luck !! |

Weather/SST/chlorophyll The forecast and wind models are not in agreement for the sunday-wed period. It should be much better than it is now, which is ugly, but not sure if it will be good enough to chase LFT. Just have to check it daily. All the wave models show the swell coming down from 10 to 6 ft by sun-mon. The temps still look great with breaks at 35-40 miles. The water color is more green on yesterday's shot probably due to some upwelling caused by the wind. |

It would help send a message if buying licenses were put off till the very last moment this next year. I used to get mine usually for Christmas, but if not went and bought shortly thereafter. This next year it wont be bought till the day before actually going. Like the salmon opener, if there is one. If not, not till RF opens, etc. No season no money. And talk about really unfair there's boat property tax. Notice how all the freshwater-only anglers were recently forced to support SW licenses via phasing out the SW and FW only versions, and SW-only anglers forced to also pay what was it like 100% increase, even more with some tags? Like they didnt know exactly what pre-determined outcome was coming well in advance. Hmnnn Capt. Obvious out |

I agree cut fishing Lic fee. But I'd like to see you get that done. It will probably raise so they can enforce all these new areas that are closed. |

So now since we have the marine protected areas on the central coast they should open up rock cod year round, that way we both win. Also ventura harbor closed lobsters to hoop netters on the jetty which some of us do make the drive down there to fish for them.Should only have to pay half the price for fishing licenses since thats all we get to fish for is 1/2 the year. |

Here is an e-mail I received from Coastside Fishing Club: Yesterday we had a 10 hour meeting with the coalition of organizations we formed to protect our recreational fishing access during the current MLPA process (the 1999 Marine Life Protection Act that mandates a network of marine protected areas off our coast). Included were our PR firm, our lobbyist in Sacramento, ASA (American Sportfishing Assn.) came in from Washington DC, SAC (Sportfishing Association of California) came in from Southern California, UASC (United Anglers of Southern California), and SCMA. (Southern California Marine Association). We will be submitting a proposal for our region on Thursday to the process, one of many preliminary proposals being floated by various interest groups. What I'm about to tell you is fact, not fiction, and I ask you to remember a few things. 1. No matter what your personal views are, it is here, it is law, and we must be part of it. To stay out of it is not in our best interest. This is going to happen, and some of our coast is going to see a reserve (no-fishing area). 2. We must show the state that recreational fisherman will not take a back seat in regards to protecting this fishery. We are the original conservationists. 3. The goal is to come up with an option that provides the conservation dictated by law, and still have a good recreational fishery for all of our targeted species including salmon, crab, rockfish abalone, etc. There will inevitably be pain involved for all user groups. In the end, if we are successful, no one in the process will have gotten everything they wanted, nor will they have lost everything they had. There must be reasonable access to all recreational fisherman, but we must also accept that there must be some closures. 4. There will be closures throughout the region, but we must keep our eye on the ball. We must not let any particular region be denied reasonable access. Our position is that if there is a reserve we must make sure that there still remains plenty of opportunity. This means you might lose a favorite rock, but a rock just as good should be available to you within safe distance from your harbor. 5. If we are successful our region will not suffer the same fate as our brothers to the south where most of the prime fishing areas were closed. A recreational community coming to the middle is unique and not a bad thing. We are supporting sensible closures and working to insure that the spirit of conservation contained within the law actually will help protect the ocean's resources while still allowing us to fish. I must warn you that if the extreme environmental organizations get their way it will be devastating. Our lives would change. All prime fishing waters would be closed. These organizations don't care about basing the protections on science. They have now moved onto their own concept of "uniqueness". If it is unique in their eyes then they want to shut it down. They are even talking about "unique" parts of the water column! If their reinterpretation of the law gets traction we are in trouble. Our proposal is not extreme. It is an honest attempt to meet to spirit and letter of the law and to create a series of MPA's that we can live with, that provide a truly useful set of protections for the resource. It is only by joining the process that we have any chance for moderating these extreme views. Make no mistake, this proposal hurts, it closes areas we all want and wish we could fish in, but to walk away from this process, or to insist on no closures at all, will be to give the ground to the extremists. I worry that your team will get some spears and bad comments from the usual "we gotta' fight 'em and never give an inch, at any cost" crowd in our community. This cannot be helped. We are in tough times, and some tough decisions are being made, and that means that they won't all be popular decisions, but rest assured that the team that is in the trenches is fighting every minute for what is right, and to protect this sport we all love. In conclusion those that are in this battle all have better things to do, but we can't walk away from this. So I ask you to help when asked, and maybe wish us a little luck. The long tough road is now upon us. My first request of you is to take this survey to help our PR firm. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=3dvtFspuCc58oQacuLiCRw_3d_3d Respectfully |

Gentlemen, I apologize for the late post on this issue, but here's the deal on ID's and fishing licenses. Commercial fishermen are required to have with them a DMV issued drivers license or ID card when engaged in commercial fishing activity. Sport fishermen are not required to have ID with them. However, if your license is not completely filled out (a violation in itself)we may ask for ID. This helps us to determine if the person on the fishing license is the same person on the ID and not your brother, cousin, uncle or mother (I've seen it). If you do not have ID, as stated in another post, we can take you to jail to verify your identity through fingerprinting. Not the happiest ending for either party, but it can happen. Best thing for all is to just have it with you, filled out and ready for us to inspect when we come by. If you happen be fishing for albacore and leave your fishing license in your vehicle 40+ miles away like someone who posts here and his friend did, expect to receive a citation for not having it in possession. |

Nice story Matt, waiting for the happy ending ! Bob, Ray et-al; Great SST Last evening. There is a terrific plume/break at about the 50/15 which is about 35 miles from Avila and coming our way. The chlorophyll shot was not good enough to tell how clean it is but at this time of the year the big albacore tend to hang in the not so clean water. On the weather side it is too soon to tell. It is pretty ugly out there right now with wind and 10 ft, 8 second waves !! The forecasts and models do not agree for the weekend. May be a window in the sun-tues time frame. Will be watching. |

Part 2 As we run north to the fishing grounds, which will be crashing with Atun, I lather myself with a bottled concoction that promises to keep me safe from the searing Baja sun. As we arrive and slide up next to the 50 other miscellaneous boats, pangas, cruisers, and other hydro conveyances that arrived before us, I notice one thing. There are bent rods everywhere. The deck hand throws a handful of bait and pins a sardine to the hook I had carefully tied the night before and flips it over the side. I let the bait free spool out in the area where the other bait was thrown and carefully thumb the spool leaving just enough tension to prevent a backlash. I can feel the action of the bait and just as I am getting used to the electric pulsing of the sardine, I feel it. Frantic action of the bait, followed by the absence of electric bait pulse, the line starts to peel from the reel. I am compelled to jerk the rod, but know with the circle hook at the end that this will result in immediate disappointment. So I wait. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Slide the drag forward to the stop and lift the rod. Hook up. The line starts to peel from the reel and I know that I am on as the fish makes the first run. This comes with the realization that it is not a big yellow fin and something smaller. As I bring the fish closer to the boat I realize that it is only a 10 pound Bonita with the heart of a 40 pound yellow fin. He is quickly released and I drop down for another try. Same story, POW, immediate hook up and another Bonita. This is followed by several others, and the realization comes that we are on a wide open cat food bite. Having lost all my cats in the road in years past, I decide to outsmart them. I will put on some weight and get below the Bonita to the large yellow fin that I know are lurking below. 3 ounces ought to get this bait down there below the Boneheads. I send it down and miraculously get through the assault of Boneheads breaking around the boat. As I wait for the big yellow fin to pick up the bait on the way down I watch the line roll off of my favorite Avet 2 speed reel. The blue anodized frame seems to fit nicely with the color of the surrounding sea. Then all of the sudden the line stops. What is this? Maybe the World record yellow fin has just taken my bait and getting ready to make his first run. I wait and there is nothing. What is this, a bottom to a sea where there are tuna biting? Not possible? Back home in the Albacore bite we never hit the bottom with bait. Hmmm. Just as I realize that there is actually a bottom in the Sea of Cortez, where the giant tuna live and the billfish are a nuisance, I feel a little something messing with my friend the sardine. Okay, my lucky day, I’m sure one of those huge black sea bass that I have seen plastered all over the walls of the fishing stores and heard stories of epic battles with 300 pounders, has picked up the bait. So I wait, knowing that a quick jerk of the circle hook will snatch the bait from the monsters’ mouth, I wait. I do bring the action to the attention of the fools who jeered me for running back to the room to retrieve this rod. I then proceed to getting ready to shame these fools with setting the hook on the world record black sea bass and as I tension the rod I forget one thing. The special concoction that is protecting me from the sun has also reduced the friction on the forearm where I wedge this fish killer that some call a rod. As I pull and watch the rod bend with the weight of the monster of the deep, I feel the slipping of the rod from under my forearm. I watch in amazement as the rod takes flight into the morning air. I realize that no part of my body is touching my favorite rod as it vaults through the air with my new Avet 2 speed reel attached. I am also aware that the fish on the other end is a world record fish. I, with much less grace than the rod, launch myself into the air in pursuit of the rod and the world record fish. At 0930 hours on 16August, 2007, I successfully achieved weightlessness over the Sea of Cortez. Not so much can be said for my trusty rod with the Avet 2 speed reel, which is laden with 300 pounds of black sea bass and approaching terminal velocity as it splashes down into the deep blue water. To be continued… |

I might as well post my fish report too even though it's not much of a report. Me and a buddy took my 14 aluminum out in the Santa Barbara harbor earlier this week. We caught 3 short halibut around the pier, one short WSB next to the bait station and a 5 foot leopard shark just in front of the breakwater. |
