Rob, there is no albacore trip in the books. Nobody here seems to know how much a 12 hour trip would cost the customer. There is no bait. I am just guessing, but I don't think I will run any albacore trips this week.

Harrell,
I'm not sure about the hake. We used to catch a few up in Oregon too, but I've never caught one around here. I know they fish them commercially up in Oregon, maybe someone has started to target them around here? Not sure.
Nice work on the fish guys...those 30-40 pounders sure are fun:-) A torn ACL has got me stuck on the beach for a little while.
thanks for the reports.
best fishes,
steve

SST/chlorophyll/Weather

The visible satellite shows it clear out where the tuna were caught so should be an SST/Chlorophyll today if anyone is going tomorrow. You really need the latest SST because the water is changing every day. The really blue water is at the Santa Lucia bank heading for PSL buoy site. There is a good looking plume 30 miles NW of Morro Bay. This area would be an easy run downhill if the wind got nasty.
The weather is not looking too bad tomorrow and thursday according to some of weather sites but others not so good. Best to just get up at the time you want to go and check the buoys. Then make your decision to go fishing or back to bed !

Hi Gang,

After hearing about the slugs going off at Morro on Sat & Sun, I called my Son-Inlaw Oscar, and we decieded to hitch up "Tugfire", and see if we could hang a few LFT's, before the low system blew in on Tuesday. We met up with new friend Chuck AKA "Wama Bama" in the MB lot around 5:30 PM for our third wheel. We got up at 3:30 AM Monday morning, to a cold and damp weather. after some fresh coffee, prepared in Chuck's beautiful motorhome, we launched "Tugfire", and made for the last reported numbers (04/12), with no bait. I guess the 25 mile warm water fingure had moved some in 48hrs, because the only temp break (59.4 to 61 degrees) we could find, was about 35 miles Southwest of MB. After trolling most of the morning for nada, we finally got a single at 52/18. Nice 30 something # fish. We got the fish, on a bright colored daisey chain, that Chuck puled out of his bag of tricks. At this time, 11AM, the Sea is laying down, to a flat calm, and the Sun is warming us up with no stinkin wind. We managed three more slugs, in the 30 to 40 pound class, between 11AM and 1:30PM, on the tide switch, and the everything died after that, so we called it a day at around 3PM, and trolled in while cutting fish, with the Sun at our backs. What a perfect day on the water. Hope you guys get a chance at these fish, before the weather closes us off.

Fished yesterday for three albacore. Scratch bite with one single and one double jig strike. Managed to land all fish. Weather was fantastic and got better all day. Started at the numbers from the day before. 03 &12. Decent conditions and a nice half degree break with birds stacked up along it. Fished that for nada. The "Tyee" got a jig fish about 10 mi. further south and then another boat can't remember the name. We pulled the gear and ran about 6 miles further south from our position untill we saw some better signs. Caught all of our fish in the general area 34'52" & 121' 18" . Fish bit the small clones the best. Fish were a nice grade. 32,35 & 40 bled and gutted. While out at the numbers we saw a swordfish finning. We did not have live bait but we pulled the jigs across the front of the fish at least three times for nada. The fish jumped at one point and gave us a good look. It looked to be about 150 lbs. Great day on the water and good to get the stripe off the boat this year. Thanks to everyone for the info out on the water. Nice to meet you Eric and Bob.

Steve we tried throwing jigs after a jig strike. Did not have any live bait so we threw chunk bait after the jig strikes and then droped back jigs but had no luck. We only had two stops so that may have been part of the prob.

A question for you. We used to catch a lot of silver Hake when trolling for salmon but in the last few years have not caught or heard of any. I was wondering why. Any idea ?

The long range computer models show some offshore about next Monday. May still be another shot at the tuna next week if the water holds ! The rest of this week does not look very good.

Bead chain swivels - Cabelas has them in lb test to 175 lbs.

Robert,
I've caught 40# albacore on it. I think those bead chains are pretty dang strong. I would think at least 200#.
Bert,
Yep, just a swimbait. Still use a lead-head even with the banana weight. I don't think I'd use any lure that had too much "action." It would just get all tangled trolling 7-8 knots.
In addition, I usually use 50# leader for it lets the swimbaits work a little better.
best fishes,
steve

Fished out of Morro today for 4 fish and one LDR. 1 single at 55 17, a triple and a single at 52 18. Was a nice scratch bite till 11:30 when it just shut down. Didn't hear of 1 fish caught after then. Most of our fish came on small 4" clones. Nice grade 20-30lb fish. Fantastic weather. Must sleep now...

Today I saw four boats return from albacore fishing. There was no bait today at Morro Bay but they caught some troll fish about 30 mi out. They said the area we caught fish on Sunday looked good but didn't produce fish so they kept trolling south another 10 mi. Two boats had 4 fish, one had three and two had zero. Marcos is trying again for bait tonight.

Steve,
Having not been on the salt water for some time with my own boat and tackle, I am not too sure what a fish trap is. I assume just a lead head with some type of swim bait or can it be any weighted lure or spoon, (salsa, crocidile, etc.) Also if you use a banana weight in front of it do you then use a non-lead head swim bait. Last time I went albacore fishing I went with someone who had everything set up and I just held on once we had hook-up. Didn't really pay attention to the right set-ups. Now I am learning all over again.

Jake, Let me know next time you want to run. If the temp break is within 30 miles and the weather is good, I'll be up for another trip.

Exactly...some of those weights don't have bead chain, just one swivel. They call them "mooching weights" up in Oregon. Found it keeps the clones running much better.

I have trolled them like clones before, just tried something different to see if there were any boat shy fish. I did have one double while the I was trolling the fish trap but didn't get anything on the fall. I heard one guy say he had a triple and two of the fish were on fish traps.

you don't need to troll the fish traps way back. A trick I learned from a guy in Oregon was to put a 2 oz. banana weight with bead chain about 3-4' in front of your fish traps. I usually fish them on the outriggers as far back as I would a clone. The great part about fish traps is you don't have to reel them in once you stop trolling. You can let them sink out and catch fish...or sometimes I'll put them in free spool for a count of 10 after the boat stops and then let them sink out/drift behind the boat. We've picked up a few doing that this summer.
Just something to try!

Bert, I wish I would of waited around for the bait, I heard them saying they were open but nobody was there and the bait was on the honor system. I was just a couple of miles out of mouth and almost turned around...but didn't. 3 of our fish came on a black and purple cedar plug, 2 on on a Jerry Garcia clone and 1 on a black and purple Zuker. I tried trolling a fish trap way back and didn't get anything on it. If we would of had bait I think we would of put a few more fish in the boat. Bert, maybe we can hook up if there is another good weather window.

So has anyone been trolling/casting fish traps? I have found these to be very effective, especially later in the season. If you see jumpers and they aren't hitting your clones or trolled fish traps, then try sliding up on to them and casting fish traps in to them. It can be lethal. I know some guys do well trolling rapalas this time of year, but I've never really tried it.
good luck,
steve

Fished Sunday for tuna - nada. Trolled 4 hours at 35,03,04 & 121,12/13 and in between. Heard others catching but found no takers. Temp between 60.8 and 61.3. Tried clones and cedar plugs in both purple and mexican flag. A little choppy out there and pea soup fog at harbor. We must not be the average fishermen. Next time.

Jake - Sorry we missed you. By the time we got bait, didn't get out of the harbor til 6:15.

Fished out there today, ended up with six fish. One fish at 15lbs, the rest at 20-23lbs . Double at 01 and 18, double at 00 and 18 and another double on the way back at 03 and 11. That was it, saw a few sauries jumping but didn't hook up there. It seemed like for a while at least one boat in the group of boats at 02 and 12 was hooked up. After that it moved to 01 and 10 where there was a few hook-ups. I didn't have any bait, they weren't open when I left the harbor at about 0530 but it did sound like they opened a little later. None of the fish I cleaned had anything in their stomachs.

Today's albacore bite produced about 6 fish average per boat. The fish were 20-30 lbs and were biting both jigs and bait. A few fish were caught as close as 17 mi but the main fleet of about 15 boats was 25 mi from Morro Bay. The water temp was as high as 61 but many of the fish came in 60 degrees. Lots of birds and bait, a few jumpers. The sea conditions were fair with some white capping. It improved after 12 but then the bite slowed down. One boat had a 10 fish stop. The best area was 03 and 12 but we heard fish being caught in 5 mi in all directions. I would like to go again this week. Bait was 7" sardine.

One more thing;

There is a very good looking plume of 60-61 degree water about 10 miles off the beach at San Simeon. This would be a much better direction to head home if the wind comes up big time. It is connected to the same water holding the fish at the old San Luis weather buoy.

Here is what the forecasts and computer models indicate for tomorrow's weather;

The morning should be about the same as today but it could get ugly about noon. Could be sooner or could be later but all the forecast indicate it is coming and will be around for the rest of the week including 10-12 ft swell by thursday.
There was a couple of boats with 10 fish last I heard. Anyone going tomorrow really should have a copy of the SST because the plume holding the fish is narrow and moving !

Robert...
You might want to rethink what you're thinking. It would NOT be a good idea for you to take those chances. Wait and find someone to go with or check with the landings.
I consider myself a little crazy... But I wouldn't even think of attempting it in what you described. And the carrying of x-tra gas... You're just tempting fate.
That's my opinion. Do as you please. I'll say a prayer for you...

12:00 update.

Scratchy but most all of the boats have a couple or three with 7 fish the high score that I know of.
Still white caps and tomorrow's forecast is worse.

Way to go Kevin! Thanks for the report. It looked too good out there to not have some fish. Hope everyone out today can score. Still planing on a trip tomorrow (Mon.) if the weather holds. Hope to hear of some good reports today. Anyone else going tomorrow I'll be on ch. 16/68 John on the "Island Girl"

good luck to all out there today ,hopefully you all will get em and virg's or patriot will run a boat soon ,also does anyone have a clue what fuel milage a little 17 ft open bow with a 175 horse mercruiser would get ,damn thing only holds 13 gallons of gas but with a couple gas cans and a 1/2 gallon of crown i might be brave enough to give it a shot on a good day ,(or stupid enough)
