Eric - glad to see your going. Both myself and Harley Boos plan on going tomorrow, so there will be at least 3 boats out looking. I had the same idea, start at 50/20 50/30 and work that edge on out depending on how bad the swell was. Looks like it will get better each day, but we'll see what tomorrow brings us. Talk to you on 68 - Jim on the SEEKER |

Travis, We went out on the Cal poly Trip last monday, the 15th. Here are the stats. We did fish the closed area north of the power plant. " Ahoy volunteers ) !! Thank you thank you thank you! You all were a huge help in collecting great data for our 9th and 10th trips of Season 1--Cen. CA Collaborative Fisheries Program! On Monday, fishing from the Patriot with 10 volunteers (9 people fishing at a time), we caught 181 fish. I believe that was our most diverse day yet in terms of species diversity, with many lings caught as well as china, copper, and vermillion rockfish (which we had not seen much of before that day). Tuesday on the Pacific Horizon proved to be a bit slower (but still interesting) with 12 volunteers catching 138 fish; possibly due to the windier sea conditions and swell that day (which fortunately didn't give anyone else trouble except me ;) Official counts will follow for all of the October trips, both for SLO county and Moss Landing's trips. Thanks again for your support of this project and we look forward to seeing you soon out on the water! Sincerely, Leslie and the Cal Poly fisheries crew |

I'm still looking at running tomorrow if conditions allow... right now it looks like it will be doable but... who knows. Looking at the latest SST I can't decide whether to run to the 34' 50" 120' 20" area and follow the break out the 50 line or I i should just bite the bullet and commit to the 50 mile run through slop and head out to the harder break around 35'00" 121'55". Guess I'll just have to wait and see if we get any more shots today... a cloro sure would be nice! Anyone else still thinking about tomorrow? Eric ---Tyee--- |

I am off/sick on Wednesday and hope to join the fleet chasing tuna.. It might be too early, but where are you guys planning on fishing? North or South? It seems the CSM buoy has had warm water for a week or more and it would be a easy ride home if the wind came up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks Jim |

Weather/SST/chlorophyll Real ugly out there today with 14 ft swell and 30 kts but the good news is; forecast to drop fast after midnight to 10 or less. Probably be pretty good swell tomorrow but coming down for the rest of the week. The rest of the week looks good with mostly light offshore winds. The not so good news is; the wind has moved the good looking breaks out as far as 50 miles. Hopefully it has just blown the tops off the warm water and it will pop back up as soon as the wind is gone. No recent chlorophyll but it was still pretty clean on the last shot. |

I guess I started a very informative discussion and I am extremely grateful for everyone's input. I think we can all benefit from others sharing all this info rather than each of us thinking we know more than others. I will be the first to admit I know nothing if it helps get the info out to help me more efficiently find the fish. Thanks everyone! Ryan |

Just to prove that putting pressure on the powers that be can work, here is a response I just received from the CEO of PG&E: Dear Mr. Bateman: Thank you for your thoughts about the value John Lindsey provided to the Central Coast community as Diablo Canyon's meteorologist. We recognize the special contributions he made not only as a trusted source that fishermen, news media, and others relied on for weather information, but also as an important link between PG&E and the community we serve. When John's position at Diablo Canyon was eliminated as part of a broader workforce transition effort, I received several e-mails like yours expressing support and appreciation for him. I delayed my response to you because I knew we were working with John to assist him in finding another position within PG&E, and I believed we would be successful in this effort. I'm pleased to share with you that John has accepted an offer to fill an existing open position within our communications department at the plant. This position will enable him to continue to work with the community on PG&E's behalf and is an excellent fit for his skills and talents. We value each of the 20,000 men and women of PG&E and the contributions they make to our customers and the communities we serve. Workforce transitions are never an easy process, and whenever they are undertaken, we strive to treat those affected employees with respect and support. I'm pleased to be able to share this information with you and again thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. Sincerely, William T. PG&E DCPP Weather Forecast for Friday 10/19/07 =================== SEA/SWELL: This morning's 5 to 7 foot west-northwesterly (275°) sea/swell (with a 7-15 second period) will increase to 6 to 8 feet later this morning and will continue at this height through tonight. Strong to gale force northwesterly winds on Saturday will generate a 6 to 8 foot northwesterly (300°) sea/swell (with a 5-13 second period) along our coastline on Saturday morning through Saturday afternoon. A 7 to 9 foot northwesterly (280°) swell (with a 16-18 second period) is forecast to reach our coastline on Saturday night, peaking early Sunday morning (01:00 PST) at 9 to 11 feet (with a 15-17 second period). Note: If this swell develops, it will have a ETA of peak at the following buoys: #06 SE Papa Buoy 10/19 12:00 PST at 26 feet at 16 seconds. #59 California Buoy 10/20 05:00 PST at 20 feet at 17 seconds. #42 Monterey Buoy 10/20 20:00 PST at 16 feet at 17 seconds. #28 Cape San Martin Buoy 10/20 23:00 PST at 16 feet at 17 seconds. #76 Diablo Canyon Buoy 10/21 01:00 PST at 10 feet at 17 seconds. Combined with this northwesterly sea/swell will be 2 to 3 foot southern hemisphere (190°) swell (with an 18-20 second period) on Sunday, increasing to 2 to 4 feet (with a 16-18 second period) on Monday through Tuesday, decreasing on Wednesday. A 6 to 8 foot northwesterly (275°) swell (with an 11-13 second period) is forecast along our coastline on Monday morning, decreasing to 5 to 7 feet by Monday night. A 4 to 6 foot west-northwesterly (275°) swell (with a 10-12 second period) is forecast on Tuesday, decreasing to 3 to 5 feet (with an 11-13 second period) on Wednesday through Thursday. Increasing northwesterly winds will generate a 7 to 9 foot northwesterly (300°) sea/swell (with a 5-11 second period) next Friday through next Sunday. Preliminary analysis: Today's long-range charts are now indicating a low to medium swell conditions (5 to 7 feet with a 7-11 second period) for the end of October through early November. ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION: A cold front, now over Northern California, will continue to move towards our area. This system will produce increasing clouds over our area tonight, but no rain. Strong to gale force postfrontal northwesterly winds and mostly clear conditions are forecast on Saturday. A major change in the weather pattern will develop on Sunday as high pressure builds inland, producing northerly to northeasterly (offshore) winds and warm to hot temperatures, especially along our coastline on Monday and Tuesday. These offshore winds could be very strong as they are channel through the mountain passes near Cal Poly, the eastern part of San Luis Obispo, and Diablo Canyon. This condition will also produce a strong Santa Ana for Southern California. |

Great discussion for sure. As for "meat fish" one of my favorite things to do is come home with a few extra(when the fishing is good enough) and pass out loins to neighbors and friends that haven't experienced the quality of fish we enjoy. They are always amazed at the taste of fresh fish compared to store bought. I usually do a little PR for the local fishing industry as well. |

I liked Bob Frankos article and feel there is a lot of good info to be taken from it. I don't follow all of his methods to the letter either. I have my own favorties also. I love to troll rapalas. Have had times where the rapalas out fished the jigs three to one. You have to slow down to about 6 to 6.5 kts and the lures can be difficult to make run straight if they get tweaked. When I catch tuna on the rapalas I never let the fish hit the deck until we bat the fish. I am also careful not to hit the lure with the bat, this keeps the fish from beating the lure on the deck and tweaking it. As far as eficiency it dosn't mean we have to take as many fish as we can,it means that we stand the best chance of actually catching some fish in a very large ocean. I don't run meat lines myself but I have known about them a long time. Personally I think a perfect day is to go out get a single jig fish and then catch the rest on live bait with 20-30 lb. gear. I normally don't keep more than about 5 fish per person. I like to both can and seal a meal the fish so 5 fish a piece for my father and myself will keep me busy for a couple of days. Take what you want from the article and good fishing to all. |

SST/chlorophyll/weather; Great SST/chlorophyll shots yesterday. The wind is changing the shape and location of the plumes but still good clean breaks at 25-30 miles. The forecast/models indicate a window of opportunity Mon-wed next week. The swell will probably still be up monday with tue-wed looking the best. |

above all enjoy your fishing. have fun fun fun i have some comments and questions. we sometimes troll very light rods with 15-20# from the outriggers , just for sport if the fish are under 20#,(must use 3 foot of strong leader) somedays we fish all rapalas , seldom bother with our 1 meat line, part of the fun is letting anglers pick their lure to test their skill at getting the hookups, not looking for equality. we have so many clones, feathers, cedars, rapalas and fishtrap type to limit our choices. we drag no more than 7 lines until we find fish. then we cut it back to 5 or even 2 or3 if bite is hot. (depending how many anglers on board.) (dont fish rapalas if the fish are going to hit the deck near someones legs ,unless you switch out the trebles for singles ) i dont disagree with productivity and efficiency suggestions, i just dont want 7 hookups with 3 on boat, I gaff, keep the lines out of running gear, get the other lines out of the way of fish on lines. another reason not to mix gear is the running speeds, clones will run at any speed until they start slingshotting and the boat planes, dont try and run a cd 18 rapala faster than about 5knots. cedar plugs can plane and get jumpy too if pulle dwith clones. fishtraps can slingshot and tangle other gear if pulled too fast. i havent seen the research to prove one way or the other his color thesis but i think contrast is just as important on lures that dont leave a wake like rapalas. for the same reason they can see a fat sevenstrand leader, i imagine them comming from below so the lure may all look the same silhouetted against the sky? wouldnt the bottom sidecollor on a rapala be more important in that case if color matters? btw, we once had an alby "spray blood" 360degrees for 20 feet on the instrument panel and helm area, i dont mind hosing down the deck but keep that blood off the vhf speaker, the gps ,the sounder buttons and the swithces and your trip will be better enjoyed. favorite jig is $6.99 chrome hexhead with zuchini skirt, double stainless barbless hook but you can catch them on a piece of an old broomhandle drilled for the line led by a large egg sinker with a srong single hook for a homemade cedarplug that cost less than a buck. tight lines all. |

It would be very smart to print Bob Franko's article and do just what he says. I have been doing it that way for years and I know it works !! About the only thing I do different is I put 80 ft of top shot mono on spectra and let it out till the end of mono is at the rod tip.. I can bring it x cranks in or let it out x seconds and know where the jigs are without the herky jerky. |

I have meat lines, but I try not to use them. I did break them out this summer up in Oregon when the weather was really snotty and we wanted to catch as many fish as we could as fast as we could. I learned that the 100# leader for my rods will not hold up on a meat line. Use at least 200#. Also, you can get a cool diving board (made by Yozuri) that will take your jigs down 10-20', so you can still fish you rods above them off each corner. They are orange and pop up when you get a fish on. The snubbers are just heavy duty bunge cords. Tuna cord is this blue cord about 1/8" in diameter that is very strong (400#?). Not sure where you get any of that stuff around here...Englund Marine carries it in Nor Cal or Oregon. If you tie a not in the lines every 2' it makes it a lot easier to pull a fish in. later, steve |

Kevin, Meat lines are short lengths of heavy tuna cord with a rubber snubber. The lines are normaly quite short and secured to stern on each corner. The snubber helps absorb the shock of the strike. After hooking up on the meat line you handline them in. You can put the fish in the boat quickly but they are not as fun to catch hence the name meatline. Did I actually say they are not as fun to catch? Strike that I'll take em any way I can. |
