I find it fascinating that we have had more regulations regarding the fisheries in the last eight years then ever before. I wonder if there is some sort of corrupt correlation between the fact that we have had a republican president who used to be an oil man whose administration has catered to big oil and the fact that we fishermen have been screwed by the enviros. I mean think about it,"we'll give the oil companies a break and let the greenies take it out on the fishermen."Or as Richard Nixon so eloquently stated "just f*** em" Also, in the last two years we have had a republican governor in Sacramento (who I voted for by the way)just roll over while we lose more fishing areas. Were we hoodwinked into thinking that Arnold was somehow pro fishing groups?? I think that he has turned out to just the oposite. I don't mean to rant hear but we have an election coming up and some of these politicians need to be drilled on this stuff. Otherwise as the Captain of the Titanic so brilliantly stated "we're f***ed." |

Another thing, if geothermal energy was used to run these ice making machines it would be entierely eco frendly and if powered by electric motors would make ozone. |

How about a billion ice making machines at the poles to offset global warming and keeping the ocean currents in check. That is our ultamate concern at this point. |

Aliens come into this country because it is the land of oportunity where anyone can realise their dreams. Can`t blame them. Where their coming from can`t be that great. Alot of peoples that come to this country work hard at meanial jobs, raise families, save and aspire to buisness men, home owners ETC. Can`t begrudge them for trying This is a time of opportunty to raise attention to over regulation. Law makers are asking for ideas on new laws that people might want in place. I think that a law should be in place to ban new regulations and laws till the current laws are brought into a reasonble accord with the people these laws are affecting. The ones with the most MONEY should never have the power over the common folk, period. We all have the right to vote, elect officals and such but really we don`t have much control. Sad but true. IT`s a corrupt system and it will change or fall. I guess thats what happens when over crowding, power and greed take over and the conservationalist with the money deside they are going to fix it. There is a law in the works in Sanluis obispo county that will ban washing you car at home or changing you own oil ETC. When our forefathers revolted against england and spain we were on our new turf and stood our ground, This is different. I`m glad to have been here the years I have and at the sametime I am very concerned for the future of my children their children and the ones that will certanly follow. I hope someone comes to there senses soon. |

For Immediate Release: Contacts: Melissa Miller-Henson Dec. 6, 2007 (530) 400-2545 Sandy Cooney (916) 715-9674 SECRETARY FOR RESOURCES MIKE CHRISMAN ANNOUNCES ORDER FOR REMAINING MLPA STUDY REGIONS Process in place for entire California coast, landmark Marine Life Protection Act Sacramento – Secretary for Resources Mike Chrisman today announced the order of three remaining study regions to implement California ’s Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) by 2011. Data collection will begin in the MLPA South Coast Study Region, (Point Conception south to the border with Mexico ), in early 2008, followed by the MLPA North Coast Study Region (Alder Creek north to the border with Oregon ), and then the MLPA San Francisco Bay Study Region (from the Golden Gate Bridge northeast to the Carquinez Bridge ). A specific timetable for the remaining regions has yet to be established. “With our announcement today we have finalized the order of the five Marine Life Protection Act study regions that will cover California ’s coast,” Chrisman said. “In many ways this is a stage that some people never believed we could reach. More importantly, today’s announcement represents a milestone that we have achieved together, scientists, fishermen, elected officials and environmentalists, all working for the benefit and future of our ocean and its marine life.” The MLPA North Central Coast Study Region, the second region identified for implementation of the act, is currently undergoing a process for evaluating marine protected areas (MPAs). In 2004, Gov. Schwarzenegger directed the Resources Agency to launch an effort to implement the Marine Life Protection Act as part the administration’s ocean and coastal protection policy. In March 2006, a blue ribbon task force delivered recommendations on the first study region (from Pigeon Point to Point Conception, called the MLPA Central Coast Study Region) to the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and the California Fish and Game Commission. In April 2007, following extensive public input and scientific analysis, the Fish and Game Commission identified 29 marine protected areas within the Central Coast Study Region. Those regulations went into effect in September 2007. Building on a model that has been demonstrated successfully to complete one region and is being used in the process on another, a blue ribbon task force will be appointed by Secretary Chrisman in early 2008 for the South Coast Study Region. The task force and DFG will appoint another regional stakeholder group to ensure local interests and knowledge play a role in developing MPA proposals for the region. DFG will also name a science advisory team to make use of the best readily available science. About the MLPA: The MLPA directs the state to reexamine and redesign California ’s system of MPAs through a comprehensive program and master plan. Its primary goals are to protect marine life and habitats, marine ecosystems and marine natural heritage, as well as improve recreational, educational and study opportunities provided by marine ecosystems. MPAs include state marine conservation areas, state marine parks, and state marine reserves. For more information on the MLPA visit www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa. |

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary's Advisory Council will consider adding more MPAs in federal waters adjacent to the existing MPAs. A public meeting will begin at 10:00 am on 12/13 at the Monterey Hyatt Hotel. Public comment will begin at 6:00pm. Recommendation will be given on 12/14 with no public comment period on that day, so if you have something to say about this issue, be there on the 13th. |

Looking for Loop Holes... Now that it is tax season, I am looking for ways to write off my fishing expenses. Perhaps by getting a commercial license. I do not wish to compete with the commercial fisherman or run the price down on their catch (Supply and demand). I have a good job and fish for fun. For instance, if I could get a commercial license to catch pink and purple polka dotted jelly fish and this would allow me to depreciate my boat, fuel...maintenance and tackle then it would make sense. Perhaps a guide’s license would work as well... Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Jim |

matt, since you were honest enough to admit that you just want to offset your sport boat expenses by selling your catch, you deserve an honest answer. you may not like what you hear, but here it goes..if you want to be a commercial fisherman, you need to invest in a commercial vessel, permits, gear, and most of all invest a bit of blood and sweat...commercial fishing is a profession, not a hobby or a way to pay for toys. show that you are in it for the long haul and not just to offset your sport boat ...then i and several others would be happy to show you the ropes and help you make it pay.untill then, i don't think you'll be all that welcome. sorry, but that the truth of it, good luck. john |

Lingcod just closed and won`t open until May, reds sand dabs and halibut are open. March and april are closed for all nearshore rockfish. sand dabs, haibut, shark, skates and rays are open year round. vessel monitoring systems will be required at a later date blackcod and blackgills are open year round but cannot be fished in waters less than 150 fathoms and are caught by set gear as well as traps and most likly become a limited entry fishery soon. if your vessel is documented verses dmv registration you will have to get a fcc licence, you will also have to get a dockside inspection as ther are dfg observers that will schedule you for the observer program, you will have to take them. coast guard regs for offshore boats mandate that you have a liferaft, epirb and a few other niceties best of luck. |

request for commercial fishing info, I have the commercial boat permit and the personal license and had planned to fish the winter months under the open access fishery for reds and lings to offset some boat expenses. I heard something on the radio that all people fishing under the open access fishery are now required to have a gps vessel monitoring system so DFG can monitor the locations fished. Does anyone fishing commercial have any info on this? Also I would be interested in learning more about the black cod fishery in the area since the nearshore and deeper nearshore permits are not feasible to purchase due to the cost. Any info is appreciated. Thanks Matt |

Nice post, Paul. Whenever I go down, I always take mucho medical supplies to the other clinic/hosp in San Quintin that the Flying Sams up here support, the Hospital El Buen Pastor. I got involved through Joe Kuntze, my urologist. With all the vitriolic banter regarding Baja on the Bloody Decks board, it's good to hear some positive stuff. Steve |

From the PG&E report: Preliminary analysis: A very intense 950 mb storm with hurricane force winds is forecast to develop 1,000 miles northwest of Diablo Canyon late Sunday night. strong to gale force westerly winds behind this storm will generate a high-energy westerly swell along the Diablo Canyon coastline on Tuesday. A 5 to 7 foot westerly (270°) swell (with a 17-19 second period) will arrive along our coastline on Monday afternoon, increasing to 8 to 10 feet by Monday night. This westerly swell will further build to 14 to 16 feet (with a 16-18 second period) on Tuesday afternoon and night. This swell will decrease to 11 to 13 feet on Wednesday, further lowering to 8 to 10 feet (with a 14-16 second period) by Thursday. |

Hi Everybody, We'll, we've been back home for a couple of days and re-entry in to the real world is a pain! Anyway, I thought I'd write a detailed account of our trip. On our way down, we stopped and visited Shelley's dad for a couple of days, then off to San Diego for one night to visit daughter Courtney. From there we crossed the border the next morning at San Ysidro, obtained our visas at immigration, and headed down to San Quintin, about 4 1/2 hours below the border. We camped at El Pabellon, a beautiful beach about 4 miles south of our Flying Samaritans Clinic at "Los Pinos". Spent 2 nights relaxing and Sunday morning held a clinic at Los Pinos where we cast and measured 1 below the knee and 1 above the knee amputee. Brad and Dr. Bob Haining showed up a little late, but helped me finish with the above knee patient. We had a nice barbeque on the beach that night with Brad and Bob, then hit the road the next morning driving south. We only made it as far as Catavina, about 2 1/4 hours south, and had to spend the night there, the guys at the Desert Inn Hotel, and Shelley and I a Rancho Santa Inez. The wind was blowing 18 wheelers off of the road further south, and with me pulling a 5th wheel and having the aluminum boat on top of the truck, we didn't want to chance it. The next morning the wind had died down, so we drove as far as Mulege and stayed at Cuesta Real, a hotel for the guys and an RV spot for me and Shelley. We walked along the river road, visited some friends and ate at the local establishment, "Jungla Jims". The next morning we drove to La Paz and settled in to the "Casa Blanca" trailer park for Shelley and I while the guys went to the El Arco Hotel. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were all spent cleaning up and organizing parts for the laboratory, as well as assembling some new machinery we had taken down there. We picked up Frank Rodriguez during this time, a retired prosthetist from Redding, CA. The clinic started on Monday and we worked solid for the next 13 days, seeing a total of 38 patients. One man had driven his daughter up from Santa Rosalia, about an 8 hour drive, on 2 different occasions, 1 for eval and measuring/casting, and another to fit a deliver a foot drop brace (AFO). She had been accidentally shot by a neighbors son playing with a loaded handgun. Another young man with Gillian-Barre syndrome had been driven up twice for bilateral AFO's from Ciudad Constiucion, about 3 hours away. All in all, we made about 18 legs and 1 arm and 6 lower limb orthotic braces, as well as the Below Knee and Above Knee prostheses for the two patients in San Quintin. The Rotarians in La Paz threw us about 4 wing dings and provided us with water, cokes, and lunches most every day that we worked the clinic. When Dr. Bob flew out of La Paz, Brad's wife Louise flew in (this was for the second week of the clinic). Sunday AM we all left La Paz and drove north, Shelley and I in our rig and Brad and Louise in their Suburban. I was hoping to stay at Playa San Buenavista on Bahia Concepcion, but the hotel was booked solid so we continued north and stayed at the Cuesta Real Hotel and RV park in Mulege again. Brad and Louise wanted to head back, so we said good bye and they took off for points north. Shelley and I stayed on an extra night, visiting several friends and visiting one of my favorite taco stands in the world. The next morning we left Mulege, drove about 1 hour north to the San Lucas Cove RV Park and planted it there for 3 nights. I finally got to take off the aluminum boat and fished for 3 days, but on the last day I got stung by a Sculpin and had to bee-line it back to the campsite and get some benedryl and advil and soak my hand in hot water. After a 4 hour nap (benedryl sure makes one whoosey), I was good to go so I cleaned my catch of the day and washed off the boat. We met a really nice couple of folks from the Northwest Territories who drive the "Ice Roads" as seen on the Discovery Channel. The next morning we again headed north and stayed again at Rancho Santa Inez near Catavina. Catavina is surrounded by a HUGE boulder field with some rocks as big a houses. Quite a change in scenery from the lava and cactus mostly seen in this area. The next day it was up to El Pabellon beach again for a couple of nights camping. I tried to set up a clinic to see the 2 patients from Los Pinos as Brad had done a few days earlier, but we couldn't connect so they'll have to wait for the next Flying Sams clinic. Up to Ensenada for a nights stay at Corona Beach (a hangout that Shelley had spent many summers growing up), and then back to Norwalk to spend Thanksgiving with Shelley's dad and daughter Courtney. All in all a great trip, although Shelley says she doesn't think she'll ever drive that far into Baja again, but rather fly into La Paz and meet me for the clinic. She did say that this experience was absolutely the most rewarding thing she's ever done. Aside from the few bouts of Montezumas Revenge (I hope I never have to use the words "projectile" and "diarrhea" in the same sentence again!) and the Sculpin sting, everybody stayed healthy. We're already planning our next clinic in latter April of '08. Vaya con Dios muchachos, Paul and Shelley Boe |

Selling project boat..... 21' Aluminum boat with a Radon like aluminum pilot house. also has a 30" transom bracket with swim step for mounting a large outboard. The galvanized trailer is in good condition. BEST OFFER This is a former Coast Guard Vessle from San Diego. 1/4 inch welded aluminum plate. This boat is very heavy duty. Email for pictures. I also have a 130 HP Honda Outboard on my Pacific Boat that I would consider selling along with the coast guard boat. It has 304 Hours on it and runs great. I just want a larger Honda for more speed.
