We need a PERCH derby , to get rid of the winter woes , nothing like a brisk dip in the surf to get the blood moving, to say nothing of that barred warrier on the end of a pulsing light action trout rod.
Good tides next week , after rain storm , go get em .

Would someone please fix the width of the posts? I'm going nuts on top of no fishing. I might have to get out the scuba gear. Anyone with me? On a different note- should I brush on some laminating resin, to the piece of plywood, that is to be the inside base of a new cuddy cabin cushion? I removed the ice-box, sink, combo unit, to make more people room, and stowage. Watch out for future overnighters. Thanks for any replys! Tim

Michelle and other readers; Heavy braided line might work best for the illegal woppers. It is so simple with most fish to have a dropper loop with a large barbless hook attached. Hook the fish in the lower jaw and send them down. Who knows, you might get a hich-hiker that would have a fighting chance with the barbless hook! Has happened!

Cal Poly uses that same system for tag & release in shallow water. I would never have thought of your 75% reduction theory. Thanks, I will try it. There are few things worse than killing a 50+ year old fish for nothing.

Chip;
Salmon are hard to see on fishfinders of low or medium power. You need at least 1kw power. More is better. I recently bought a Furuno FCV 585 (1kw) but have not checked it out on salmon yet. I found it for $1100 on the web. It is an excellent sounder and has worked great on rockfish, etc.

Michele:
I made up a rig a couple of years ago the seemed to work great for release/recompression. A wire basket with an open bottom and 10 lbs of weight attached. I used 100 ft. of braided nylon which handles the easiest with minimum twist and tangle. 100 ft should be enough because the volume of gas (swim bladder) Halves at 33ft (1 atmosphere) and halves again at 99 ft (3 atmospheres) which is 75% reduction. Just drop the fish in the water and lower the basket over the fish and down it goes. This is quicker and easier than "rehooking".

Harrell,

Thanks for the link, I will use it to get a couple more. Bill Shelton had sent us one of those. That is actually what I was using when my line broke. I lost it plus at least 6 lbs. of weight. It's amazing how much floatation those big fish get in them.

I have tried so much weight that the line breaks. I will set up a rod with spectra just for that next year. I guess I will just keep experimenting. If anyone has a good way that has worked for you, (for cow cod or goldeneye) let me know.

I will post here when we set up a squid trip. It will be on a Sat. night probably in Jan.

Thanks for being there for us last year Mel. Maybe CCFCC could rent a bus.

Friends:

I am going to post this report a number of times between now and next July. I would like a lot of you to think about appearing at the PFMC meeting to speak in favor of a longer groundfish season for our area. Here is a summary of what happened in 2006.

In July of 2006, I appeared on behalf of the Central Coast Fisheries Conservation Coalition (CCFCC) in Foster City for a crucial meeting of the Pacific Fisheries Management Council (PFMC). This federal regulatory body was scheduled to set fishing seasons for the upcoming two years (2007 & 2008). I assumed that if we convinced the Council to set a reasonable tonnage quota for recreational fishermen on the canary rockfish, we would get a reasonable 7 or 8 month rockfish season. After our successful efforts to get a reasonable canary rockfish quota, we were informed that the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) was going to arbitrarily lower the quota so that the Central Coast (From Pt. Conception to above Santa Cruz) would get only 6 months of fishing starting on June 1st. Everyone was outraged that we were being stabbed in the back by our own CDFG. Our CDFG representative, Marija Vojkovich, would not budge. I was the only person from our area. On the day of the key vote by the Council, I marshaled many recreational fishermen from Northern California and Oregon (and even some commercial fishermen) to speak in favor of our “fishermen’s proposal” that would give us a 7-month season starting on May 1st. I also pleaded with the other California representatives on the PFMC to support our position. Voykovich presented the CDFG proposal that would give us the shortened season and spoke strongly in favor of the CDFG proposal. Another member of the council made a motion to amend the CDFG proposal to give us our 7-month season. In an 8-6 vote, the PFMC voted in favor of the “fishermen’s proposal” and against the CDFG proposal. All of the other three California Council members voted against the CDFG proposal and in favor of the “fishermen’s proposal.” So this year and next year you get 7 months of bottom fishing from May 1- November 30.

In July of 2008, the same PFMC will be voting again on the upcoming 2009-2010 fishing seasons. We want to get at least 7 months and hopefully 8 or 9 months. Bottom fishing has been tremendous. Recent data from the Cal Poly report shows that fishing is just as good now as it was 25 years ago. WE WILL NEED TO HAVE A LOT OF FISHERMEN PRESENT AT THAT KEY MEETING TO SPEAK IN FAVOR OF A LONGER FISHING SEASON! I will be giving you plenty of notice on the time and date of the key vote. In 2006, the Council asked me when I spoke before the council why there were not any other fishermen from our area. I did not have a good answer for them. This time we want a large group from our area speaking on behalf of recreational fishermen.

Mel

Blackie, and all readers; It is not hard to set up a pole with a dropper loop; and a large barbless hook on it, to send those "floaters" back down to the bottom, for at least a chance of survival. I've done this for a while now, and the good feeling inside is worth the effort. Tim

David. That very thing happened to me and Harold Davis.Harold was taking me for a demo ride in a Bahia 25 and it was a week before salmon season 0pening and the Bluefin checked us out. They didn't bother us until we stopped the boat then they came over to see if we had boated a fish.We had been riding around at trolling speed just talking so it probably did look suspicious. The first words out of the wardens mouth was what are you guys doing out here.Harolds answer. Trying to sell this guy a boat.He did sell me one after that ride and I have been really happy with it. Charlie

They dont even have the manpower to run the bluefin that sits at the dock in morro bay , so I doubt they will be out patrolling , but its a good idea anyway , I dont think there is a law to passing thru the area.
Thanks for the link to the story stacey , thats in the area where i used to live on my boat , It really sucks that they are not smart enough to see when they were pumping the water out , to just STOP .
Oh well you know as well as I stacey you work for the man.

My advice is to obey the law.
If we start acting like outlaws we will be treated as such.
The answer is to get people in office that have commonsence and eliminate ANY private funding from the private interest groups.

That would be funny... But it would suck if they got frustrated and then made us put on Vessel Monitoring System which costs 300.00 per month and then told us we couldn't stop in those areas. That's what they are doing to commercial boats. It's like being on house arrest before you commit the crime.

I think next year before actually fishing, I will head out to a no fish zone with no fish on board and no lines out, just idle around for a while watching the sounder for my own fish count, that should make them real nervous, especially when I don't leave after they check me out.
I think if enough of us did this in rotation, it might rattle their cage a little.
The cry Wolf thing.....Ha

Saw the slides
Where did this fish kill take place?
Was this in C.A.?
If that was the case then
why was the DFG counting my 10 fish limit at the launch ramp when this was going down?
Those are some very disturbing pictures.

Like to meet up with at least one person responsible for that last slide show.
They would receive an education they wouldn't likely forget!
