Thanks Will.

500 squid at 30 lbs each = 15,000 lbs = an extra 60 passengers at 250lbs That would seriously mess with my stability, even on one of the bigger boats.

I caught alot of squid this year outta Davey's Locker(Newport Beach) and in San Pedro and both times the cost was $3.00 a squid. I would probably agree to $5. but not 10.00. I seen guys throw them in the sack and after 30 minutes go back and pull the head off and slice down the Body longways through cartlidge and rinse off in the tank. And the crew didnt seem mind since the boat had caught 500+ and 200 or so were being cleaned and we would wait an hour or so outside the harbor because the were still cleaning.

Happy holidays gang. Big thanks to the guys who rolled up their sleeves and went looking for albacore in '07. Also to the bait guys for filling the pens and Harrell for keeping a keen ear to his radio and posting timely updates, priceless. Anyone have a problem if the elusive longfin masses finally migrate to Morro in '08? How long has it been?

I learned a trick down at BOLA a few years back. After filleting the squid dump it in boiling water for about 30 seconds, it's much easier to peel off the skin. Bon Apetite!

Joe,

You are right, filleting squid is no fun, but niether is paying a bunch of money to go fish for something you can't eat. We will be cutting them right this time, since it makes such a difference. Does 10.00 per squid sound fair?

Humbolt Squid,

For what it's worth. Went to San Diego, last season for the first time squid fishing. They did not care how long the animals laid in the sacks. The bite was on and they told everyone keep catching as long as the bite was on. Then the bite went off. It lasted about 2 hours. About fifty were caught average 30 pounds some fifty.
Time to clean, $5.00 each, cut the fluk off slice down the middle, pull the head and guts out. A fillet, about 24" X 30" average.
Ink and all they just kept cleaning and throwing the meat into plastic trash bags.
Our turn came up, I asked them to rinse the meat before throwing it into the bags. They said no.
So I opted for them to throw the meat into the live well tank for us to rinse and bag, ok we will let you.
With clean and iced meat in the chest we made our way back to Diamond Bar, slept a few hours.
The next morning set up our dressing table and went to work. Cutting the big slabs 6" inches wide and 12" inches long. Thus looking futher and seeing the thin white line under the skin we went to filleting this off. The stomac side was clean, the outside once we cut into it there were the orange parasites. We cut them out, throwing the skin aside. We ended up with beautiful full white squid fillets like I have bought in the store. Pounded a few and cooked them, be careful, do not pound too much. We found the texture to be more eatible unpuonded, just a little chewy.
Cut the squid into 1" wide strips 6" inches long, rolled in eggs, dipped in Italian, bread crumbs, baked each side 12 minutes.
Everyone who was there could not get enough.
This also makes great squid burgers.
By the way this whole season I used the skin for rock fish bait, can not talk enough about how well it works. One thing is trying to get the skin off the hook sometimes is very difficut, because it is very fiberous and stringie.
Just some thoughts.

Stacy, the trip you were on with Virges, we did not skin the meat, this takes quite the patience and time. The boat would have to charge at least $20.00 per animal to make it enven begin to be worth it. Ask Mike Price, as a favor I did skin his for him.

Best regards,
Joseph Anderton

You got it all wrong Jim , no surf rods or giant revolving reels , use your lightest trout rod with 4 or 6 # test , carolina rig , 18 inch leader , weight depending on surf conditions, and the infamous GULP BLOODY SAND Worm ,
Hope you will be off the weekend I plan on having the SO CALLED DERBY , will most likley be at S.S state beach, lots of parking in lower lot , would just be a get together to break up the no fishing season.
I plan on having some tube steaks boiling , probaly some beers and maybe a jug of EJ for a warm up when you come out of the COLD water.
fishing there in the winter is usally good , we will see.
Anyway that a next month project , make sure you put in your order to santa for your fishing licence we got to keep our DFG staff empolyed this winter.
Heading for the delta for the holidays , see if the feds left any STRIPERS alive.
Merry Christmas to all and a happy , prosperous ,and SAFE new year

Last early spring there was a gentleman at the beach at Avila (the one with the small launch ramp) that would fly fish for perch. There is a small rock clump that shows itself at lower tides. He would work that and do very well. I gave it a try with a small spinning reel, rod and some weight to cast it out. I tried hunting for sandcrabs, and settled for breaking open some muscles. Worked quite well, but slow getting bait...

I am sure there are a million ways to skin the cat, or catch the perch...

Happy Holidays,
Kevin

thanks for the info on squid.

Jim, I've let out as much as 1200' of line on the squid trips, the bigger the reel the better. there is a guy that watches this site that will be putting a number of reels on ebay soon.
perch: I use a freshwater spinning reel with 6# and small artificial grubs, Blackstone could probably give you the best advice.

How many squid can one expect to catch on these trips? How far out do you go? How much line do you need on the reel? It sounds like fun if only to make bait for next year...

Also, can anyone give up some game on how to fish for surf perch? I have never fished for them.....20' pole 5 pound test? 5' pole 20 pound test?

I am guessing that you would use a 10' pole with an open faced reel.......casting into the break water with sand crabs on a small hook as bait.

I would consider buying a case of beer and bucket of chicken if I could only meet the Jedi Master Perch Dude.....

Also, Sand Dab fishing.......can you eat them and how do you clean them....????????

Make sure that you clean the squid as soon as posible then cut that 1/8" membrane off the squid, now soak it in milk overnight and then tenderize it with a mallet for a few hours, leave it in the fridge all night so the fillet can relax. Then make a mixture of egg whites and water, roll the fillet in it and then in some rice flakes ( available at most japanese grocery stores) Put some peanut oil in a frying pan and fry at 350 degrees for a couple of minutes on each side. Now open a can of beer, take a nice long swig.
Your dog will love you forever, unless it has an iodine allergy and then you've some problems.

Here is a good surf perch recipe (I've posted it before, but since there might be a derby coming up and for the benefit of new(er) members)
Surf perch ceviche Yucatan style:
fillet and debone perch, cut into 1/4 in. cubes
use about one lemon and enough limes per fish
juice of lemon and lime about equal, key limes are better
white onion and red onion chopped fine
one habanero pepper chopped very fine (use gloves!)
two serranno peppers chopped fine
bell pepper chopped fine
cilantro chopped fine (one bunch)
lotsa corse ground black pepper
small amount o salt
put it all ina plastic bag and refrigerate for at least four hours (overnight is better)
Serve with tortilla chips and tequilla

Along with the calamari and beer you should try this...Aprox. 22 Jalapenos halved and deseeded.Fill cavity halves with Bleu cheese. place on a cookie sheet with foil on the bottom. Bake at 350 for about 12 minutes. You want the pepper to have a little crunchiness left to it. Cook it too long and the pepper gets soft on you. Feeds one. Extra beers preferable

The Humbolt squid should be cleaned right after you catch itand iced, they have high iodine content and tend to decompose faster than the little ones, Michelle is right you must take the thin membrane off both sides of the body. It helps to soak the squid for 1/2 hour or so in milk and 2 table spoons sugar. Then batter as you would any white fish and fry in olive oil , dont be shy of seasonings. I use bisquick batter with a little beer , dont forget to drink some beer too HAPPY HOLIDAYS

I had some last year , I took the first 1/8 off both sides , , cut it into 4x4 pieces wrapped it in a towel , got out the abalone hammer gave it a pounding till it was broken down , sliced it into strips and deep fried it real quick , it was great .

Also the multi day permit , JR and I have faxed them in and used a credit card for payment, kept a copy of both permit and fax transmittal , and went fishing , we have never had one checked , but a least you have gone thru the motions , dont know if it would hold up in court , but at least we tried , the dfg makes it so hard to obay the rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last year there were a few guys that said their squid was good, maybe they will post here. Stacey, we may not have cleaned your squid right. I believe it was the second trip that we figured out to fillet off the top 1/8" and bottom 1/8 inch. Also, this year we will start cleaning them as soon as possible instead of letting them sit around in the bags. I talked to Tinker yesterday on the Check Mate and he said to boil the meat in fresh water before you prepare it and that will get any strong or iodine taste out of it. I guess you would want to cook it for less time than your recipe calls for after boiling it. He said it tastes like restaurant squid if you do this first.

Fast Eddie caught 6 squid in his net on his most recent trip, so they are around.

This link should get you to the Multi-day permit form. Be sure and read the fine print ie; "...the trip is continous and extends for a period of 12 hours or more on the first and last day of the trip and no berthing or docking is permitted within five miles of the mainland shore."

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/forms/forms.html

Stacy;
The best way I have found to fix it is to bake it on a thin oak board for 20 minutes then throw the squid away and eat the board!

Michele, I wont be able to make the Jan 12 trip but i'm sure i'll be on the next weekend trip that you schedule. Bring some of the shirts you mentioned on your earlier post.
i also discovered a good place for seafood supper in paso. its called chico's cafe on 11th next to cold stone.

They make it very difficult to get the two day limit permit. You almost have to plan a week in advance since there is no local D.F.G. office to file it with. Unless someone knows of a quicker way?? Tim

You can get a two-day declaration ahead of time from the Dept. of fish and game in Monterey or wherever. That's what we have to do for Admiral's 2-day trips.

I posted about a ticket I got for over possion. two limits for two days fishing. I talked to the DA and showed her my evidence. The law says you can give away your fish and fish another day.I pled to a charge of disturbing the peace $100 fine. Not a fish and game violation. It was cheaper to pay the fine, I live in Bako. The DA knew she didn't have a case but was willing to take me to a jury trial for $200 fine if I didn't take her deal. I think all she wanted was a conviction. Anyway I'll fish two days next year and take home two limmits.

Dave; I have not culled fish and let the "dinks" die in the back. That is true I'm sure for most people. I let the fish go back to the bottom imediatly with a very easy method(if you've been reading the posts lately?) It's not really about the "meat" anyways. I would go fishing even if I couldn't keep any. It is nice to bring home some dinner but please do it with some class. Fish where you want and how you want, and Happy Holidays! Tim

Dave my sights were far from your forehead, believe me I have been bashed plenty of times on this site for numerous reasons. I just thought it was funny how many times there were votes or vote casted. On a better note how about those 300# YFT going off down@ Mag Baja way.
