Hello Michell,

Tami and I talked about it. We moved our vacation into Feburay. We will be ready and willing to make the seminar happen. Give me a call and we can start working on the logisitics.
This is going to take some volunteers, Jim lewis, has signed on.
Please anyone who can take part and help, give me a call. (235-1866)
Mike Price, has helped with the fire and BBQ, the last two years, he is also on my list.
We will need help with setting up, BBQ, and setting food out, serving, beverages and most of all clean up. Michell, said her mom & dad will be helping too.
The Central Coast Salmon Enhacement Program, will be joining us and helping out too.
Speaking of the CCSEP. Please feel free to contact them and send your tax deductible donation, to keep the 70,000 loacal Salmon, set free from thier organization, into Avila, bay. They have made a great effort the last 20 years to help promote the Salmon, return run. Just think, 40,000 to 70,000 Salmon, reareed and set free from Avila, over the last 20 years. How many have you caught? It is a great organization to help out and become part of the volunteer staff, just a way to spend some of this free fish clouser time in a very positive manner. We need fisherman volunteers to help out with the pins, vaccination, feeding and release into the wild. Please feel free to give me a call and help us out. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Joseph Anderton
BBQ.

Why worry about closures? We've been subjected to that already on the ocean. They don't have enough wardens or sherrifs or park rangers to patrol all the areas as is it. Maybe someone ought to write a letter to the local rag informing all the bike riders that are bitching about the possible closure of Montana de Oro to get used to it. Also, maybe they should have to license and insure their bikes to help pay for all the trails and land that they use for free.

as far as i know and understand as a county parks employee is that if it is not maintained and managed the state cant let people still use it as they would be responsible for whatever happens because of people using it.

Last time State Parks tried to put a fence around Montana de Oro the Folk in Los Osos nearly tarred and feathered the district supervisor.
Surfrider foundation may have a few words to say about it too.

The road through the park is still county owned.

I think I answered my own ?
The trib article kind of stated they would spend more money trying to keep people out than just leaving it open , it really sucks tho , the big money parks will remain open like the dunes and the castle.

A ? for the board;

being a former STATE EMPLOYEE i should know this ,
If the GOV does close the state parks like he is talking , do we as tax paying california citizens have the right to still go on that land and use it , like fishing , hiking , ECT , somewhere in my memory banks I think it only means it will not be maintained ,
what say you MEL , your the expert?

Kyle; I can tell you need some help ,so here goes.First of all this is the way I do it not all fish this way , so remember its my way .
I use a light action trout spinning rod with 4 or 6 pound line , I rig my terminal tackle the same as a carolina rig that the fresh water bass fisherman use.
that consist of a sliding sinker, a barrel swivel and a 18 to 24 inch leader with a red hook size 2 or 4.
On that hook you put a BLOODY SAND WORM MADE BY GULP , you can buy them at VIRGS or somrtimes wallmart. only a ++piece of it leave a tail hanging behind the hook .
I fish the last two hours of the INCOMING tide , I do stand in the water sometimes up to my waist depending on conditions ,cast out beyond the break and retrive in short jerks all the way back to your feet , I have had fish hit me two feet from where im standing.
Dont stay in one spot , move up and down the beach , the fish do , if there are rocks out there cast to them the fish hang there .
Ok Kyle other than you showing up for the the derby where there will be a lot of good fisherman with all kind of ways to catch them ,GOOD LUCK.

FYI waders...if you want to eliminate the fear of drowning in waders, simply put a wading belt on! Any belt will do. It is actually a myth that waders will drown you...at least not the neoprene or gortex waders. Maybe those old rubber ones. I did white water rescue a few back up in AK and those waders floated you like a cork when you went in.
Good luck on the perch. I've caught a few along Pismo. Had my best luck on the Northern end of the beach...but I think they are everywhere. Guys get a bunch off Oso Flaco.
best fishes,
steve

I've had good luck perching at Montana de Oro sandspit for quite a while now, just south of the trail end or about a mile north seems to be more consistent,
Have used twirleytailed grubs, bloody sand worms, and boiled sandcrabs. all work fine when the fish are biting, I've had better luck on the incoming tide.
Unlike Zen Master Blackie, I dont step in the water past the soles of my sneakers so waders are not needed nor wetsuits.

John;
I will probaly hold a class on HOW I FISH , the morning of the derby that does not mean i am an expert , i do catch a lot of perch in the surf , but that can also be luck.
First of all I do not like waders in the surf .
The reason is they will drown you if a big wave does hit you and gets into them , I fish a good quality wet suit , and have been known to wear a float coat on some days when fishing by myself. I am going to fish next week if the tides are right , probaly start at little pico creek , will post before i go in case anyone wants to join in.
Got some work to do around the park the next couple days, or would fish tomorrow, good tide before noon.

any chance of getting any lessons on surf fishing? I just got a new pair of waders but haven't tried it for 40 years, could use some expertise! You know what can happen in a derby with beginners luck !?!

FYI small crabs and mussels from under the rocks is illegal now. Don't forget Morro Bay is an MPA-open only to finfish, and oyster and bait operations.

FYI;
A friend of mine went perch fishing last week up the coast toward the light house,he said he notices a uniform on the bluff taking pictures.
On his way out to his car a DFG warden stops him and says , you are fishing right by the MPA boundary, My friend explains he was not in the MPA and knows where the boundary line is.
the wardens words were ,THE BOUNDARYS RIGHT ALONG HERE SOMEWHERE. He was only there to educuate people, and make sure they were not fishing in the MPA .
My friend explained the boundrys to him, and he seemed to accept that, said signs would be posted at a later date .

So now we know we have wardens running around out there that dont even know the MPA boundrys , good luck in the new year.

SEA/SWELL:

The west-northwesterly swell has peaked and will be gradually
decreasing over the next 72 hours.

The peak wave energy occurred at 09:34 this morning when the
significant swell height reached 20.5 feet with a 20 second period
(331,577 units). This was one of the greatest amounts of wave-energy
ever recorded by our waverider buoy, since waverider buoy records
have been kept (mid 1980s).

The maximum significant swell height reached 21.1 feet with a 17
second period (291,613 units) at 10:34 this morning. This was the
highest significant swell height recorded since the 11th of January
2001 when the significant wave height reached 21.3 feet with a 17
second period at our waverider buoy.

Note: Significant swell height is the average height of the waves in
the top third of the wave record.

At 10:20 this morning, one set of waves were measured by our waverider
buoy at 33.2 feet with a 16 second period.

This afternoon's 17 to 19 foot west-northwesterly swell (17-19 second
period) will decrease to 14 to 16 feet (with a 16-18 second period)
by tonight.

Note: Both the Monterey Canyon and Point Reyes waverider buoys
went offline this morning.

Michele
Flipping the channels the other day, came across this blondie gal talking about her banana boat, thought now heres a myth buster.
Another one busted when I took a young girl aboard the end of last season, never fished anywhere in her life, the four of us ended the day with a good score of rock fish plus 6 nice lings and she hooked and landed the 2 biggest lings.

Since it is slow on here for fishing action i thought I would post some ocean minded for-sales. My roomate and I selling a mooring in Avila (1500), a brand new yamaha 4hp outboard(700) and full scuba gear for a family of 4(975). All of it is quality gear. Our 32ft boat sank last season, so were trying to cut our losses. Mschaller12@hotmail.com or check craigslist for details. Hope the salmon show up soon!!
